Who hunts the giraffes in the wild. Interesting facts about giraffes for children and adults

Giraffe the highest animal of our planet. The height of this majestic mammal can reach 6 meters. 1/3 of its growth falls on a long neck. And the weight of an adult animal can translate a ton.

The long neck of the giraf is simply necessary in order to survive in the savannas of Africa. It would be logical to argue that with the onset of drought food becoming less, and only those giraffes could reach the tops of the trees, who had a long neck. And accordingly, the chances for survival and reproduction from giraffes with a short neck was hundreds of times less. But Namib's zoologist Rob Siemens suggests that the long necks of the giraffes are the consequence of battle necks between males. After all, the winner is always more than the attention of females, and accordingly, his offspring will have more. Who is right, and who is mistaken to say difficult.

Despite the fact that the neck of the giraffes in length reaches two meters, there are only 7 cervical vertebrae in it, as in humans. And when the giraffe will decide to lie down in the rare sleep clock, he attaches his head on his back or back. During the day, the giraffe sleeps only two hours. And almost all of his time he spends on food (16 -20 hours a day).

The giraffe female can be found not only for growth (it is lower and easier than the male), but also in the manner to eat. The males, as leaders, are always drawn behind the leaves, which are higher than their growth, and females are content with the fact that it grows at the level of their head.

To get the leaves from hard-to-reach high wood branches, not only the neck, but also his muscular tongue helps. After all, his giraffe can pull 45 cm.

An interesting fact: two giraffes with the same color in nature does not exist, it is unique as a fingerprint in humans.

Characteristic

The males of the giraffe reaches a height of up to 5.5-6.1 (about 1/3 of the length of the neck) and weigh to 900-1200 kg. Females are usually slightly smaller and easier. The neck of Giraffes is extremely long, and this is despite the fact that they, like almost all other mammals, only seven cervical vertebrae. High growth increases the load on the circulatory system, especially in relation to the supply of the brain. Therefore, the heart of the giraffes is particularly strong. It skips 60 liters of blood per minute, weighs 12 kg and creates pressure, which is three times higher than that of a person. However, it would not be able to endure overload with a sharp lowering and raising the head of the giraffe. In order for such movements to be caused by the death of the animal, the giraffe blood is more dense and has twice the density of blood taurus than a person. In addition, Zhiraf has special locking valves in a large cervical vein, interrupting blood flow in such a way that the pressure in the main artery supplying the brain is preserved. The Dark Giraffe Language is very long and muscular: the giraffe can turn it into 45 cm and is able to grab the branches.

Giraffes live by one or small herds, not particularly tied to each other. The terrain that they bypass in search of food can be up to 100 km². Social behavior depends on the floor: females adhere to herd from 4 to 32 individuals in which the composition changes from time to time. The hierarchical structures and the behavior of the giraffes in the herd are not yet fully investigated. There are no single leader from giraffes, but the elders and strong males, called elders, have an advantage over others. Young males until sexual maturity also make up small individual groups, after which they begin to live alone. Often, the giraffes move together with herds of antelope or zebras, as it gives them great safety. When meeting two adult males, the case often reaches the ritual fight, in which they become next to each other and try to hit their heads along the opponent's neck. However, in contrast to other social animals, the defeated males of giraffes from herd are not expelled. During the pairing periods, the fight between males is more aggressive and can reach such desperation that one of the competitors may eventually be "beaten" before the loss of consciousness. An option to find out the relationship can be a fight at the tree in which everyone seeks to bypass the opponent so as to press him to the trunk. Cases in which the giraffes applied against each other their dangerous blows with the front hooves that they usually do against predators were not observed.

The opinion is widespread that the giraffes are greasy animals. However, in fact, they communicate among themselves at frequencies below 20 Hz, indistinguishable by the human ear.

The marriage period usually lasts from July to September, and the duration of pregnancy is 14-15 months. As a rule, only one cub is born. Birth occurs in position standing, so the newborn first thing is to fall from a two-meter height. Immediately after birth, the giraffe reaches 1.8 m in height and 50 kg. Already an hour later, the cub is firmly standing on the legs and after a few hours it starts to run. However, the flock of cubs are allowed only in two or three weeks. Approximately a year and a half the offspring remains with the mother. In a four-year-old, the giraffe reaches puberty, at six years it reaches full growth. In the wild, the life expectancy is about 25 years, in captivity about 35.

Thanks to its size, the giraffe has few natural enemies, and from those few predators who dare to attack him, it is quite effectively defended by the blows of the front hoofs. Such a blow is able to smoke skull to any predator. In the National Park, Ethos once was observed how the lions jumped on the giraffe and snapped her neck. However, attacks on adult giraffes are still rare. More often than the production of lions, leopards, hyenas and hyenoid dogs becomes young. Despite the defense of the mother, only 25-50% of young giraffes reach adult age.

Giraffe and man

The North African populations already in ancient times the Greeks and Romans hunted. Sometimes giraffes even used to show in the Coliseum. In general, the giraffe was little known in Europe. Although in the northern hemisphere and there is a constellation Giraffe, it is a relatively new convention and has no mythological origin. In Black Africa, the giraffes hunted with the help of digging holes and traps. Their long tendons were used for the riot of onions and strings of musical instruments, the clothes from the slope of the giraffe in many nations served as a symbol of high status. Meat at the giraffes is rigid, but edible. The hunt of African tribes on the giraffes never reached the scale capable of seriously prank their numbers. With the arrival of white settlers, the main motive of hunting for giraffes was entertainment, and the number of giraffes began to decline dramatically. Today, the giraffes are almost everywhere - rare animals. Only in the states of East Africa there are still numerous populations. The total number of giraffes is estimated at 110,000-150,000. There are about 13 thousand individuals in the Serengeti Reserve. In general, the giraffes are not considered a view on the verge of extinction. Today they are contained in many major world zoos and successfully multiply in captivity.

Based on the pattern and places of origin, the giraffes are divided into subspecies. Between individual subspecies possible. There are nine modern subspecies:

  • Nubian Giraffe (G. C. Camelopardalis) - nominative subspecies. Inhabiting East Sudan, Western Ethiopia
  • Giraffa Camelopardalis Peralta. Thomas, 1898 - Kenya Angola, the country whose name was named.

Initially, the subspecies of the giraffes were considered independent species. Then this point of view was rejected, and scientists led contradictions on the distinction of individual subspecies. Often there are differences in the pattern even inside closely related herds. Therefore, some researchers adhered to the opinions that signs of subspecies of giraffes are not hereditary (and, therefore, there are no true geographical subspecies). In addition to the above subsidies, in North Africa in antiquity there were some subspecies that there are no more today. Since the giraffes without spots are visible on some ancient Egyptian images, there are assumptions that North African subspecies were evenly painted and did not have patterns. There are, however, also images of giraffes with stains that make such assumptions in question.

    Facts

Many paintings struck me. But what really shook, was not a work of art, it was ... Giraffe. I was shocked before the depths of the soul, when I learned that there is such a creature on our planet. It happened in the zoo. I was 3 or 4 years old. At first I saw an elephant, but he did not surprise me: I guess I already knew something about him. My parents and I approached the large tree. And suddenly, because of him, a giraffe with a long-pre-pre-cable. At that moment I thought: "What is it at all?" I did not hear anything about the giraffes before and was stunned. Even now, I think about what is still strange giraffes, they still fascinate me. And the idea that I live in the same universe as the giraffe, makes me happy.

Giraffe is a mammal from a piece of manflock. Giraffe is the highest animal on the planet. Giraffe is a smart and peace-loving animal, which is familiar to us since childhood. In this article you will find a photo and description of the Giraffe, and also learn a lot of interesting things about this unique and wonderful animal.

Description of the giraffe or what does giraffe look like?

The description of the giraffe can be started primarily with its growth. Giraffe looks very high. After all, the giraffe is a record holder in the animal world for growth and is one of the biggest animals. Giraffe growth reaches a height of up to 6 meters. At the same time, the weight of the giraffe is 1 ton. The growth of the giraffe in males is more than the females. In addition, females and weigh somewhat less.

The growth of giraffe on 1/3 is its neck, which is unusually long and slender. The neck of the giraffe has 7 cervical vertebrae. Many other mammals have the same vertebrae, even with short necks, just the vertebral giraffe is elongated. The neck of Giraffe is unusually strong, as it has strong muscles that allow you to hold your head and greatly maneuver.

Since the giraffes have a high height and long neck, their blood circulation system works with high load. Therefore, the heart of the giraffes is very strong. The heart of the giraffe weighs 12 kg and passes 60 liters of blood per minute, creating pressure 3 times higher than that of a person.

But even such a strong giraffe heart cannot bear overloads if the animal is sharply lowering and raising his head. Nature took care that such loads do not have the sad consequences and made the blood of the giraffe is more dense. In addition, there are 2 times more in her blood cells than a person. Also, Giraff has special valves that help maintain pressure in the main artery at one level.

The giraffe looks unusually not only because of its growth. The strong giraffe body is covered with short wool. Giraffe wool color adds an extraordinaryness of how the giraffe looks like. Drawing of wool in each giraffe is formed by a unique pattern of dark spots, which are highlighted against the background of a light shade of the base color. This pattern is absolutely unique as a fingerprint of a person. Based the body of the giraffe briefly and does not have stains. In young individuals, the color is lighter than the elders.

Giraffe looks funny, because his head with small ears has two horizon coated horn. Horns are available at both sexes. The females horns are thinner and have tastes. In males, they are thicker, and wool is smoothed more. Occasionally, the giraffes meet two pairs of horns. On the forehead at the giraffes, there is often a convex bone thigh, which looks like a horn. Giraffe looks charming, because his huge black eyes have thick eyelashes. The giraffe has a thin long tail, with a black tassel on the end and a small short mane on the neck.

Giraffes have good eyesight, hearing and smell, such abilities help them to notice danger in time. And of course, a large growth of giraffes allows you to have a good overview of the locality. Giraffes can see each other at a distance of a kilometer. The giraffe language has a dark color, often with a purple tint. The length of the giraffe is 45 cm and helps to capture the branches with an animal. The long neck of the giraffe allows him to reach the highest crowns.

The legs of the giraffe are strong and high, while the front is longer than the rear. Giraffes run fast. If necessary, the speed of giraffe gallop can reach 55 km / h. Thus, the animal giraffe on short can overtake a rink horse. But most often the giraffes move slowly, rearrangement first two right hooves, then both left. With such a walking, the speed of the giraffe is up to 7 km / h.

Since the giraffe is a lot of weight and thin legs, it only moves on a solid surface. Therefore, the animal giraffe avoids swampy spaces. Rivers for giraffes are almost insurmountable. It is noteworthy that these huge animals are able to jump over barriers with a height of up to 180 cm.

Currently there are 4 types of giraffes and 9 subspecies. All of them differ among themselves pattern of wool and spots color. The types of giraffes are divided into: southern giraffes, Masai giraffes, mesh giraffes and northern giraffes.

Modern subspecies of giraffes include: Nubian Giraffe, West African Giraffe, Giraffe Cordofan, Mesh Giraffe, Ugandy Giraffe, or Giraffe Rothschild, Masay Giraffe, Tornyfoot Giraffe, Angolan Giraffe and South African Giraffe.

Where do giraffes live and how?

Giraffes live in Africa, upholstered on dry parts. Today, the giraffes live to the south and southeast of Sahara. Giraffes live in savannas and gentlemen, primarily in the territories of Eastern and South Africa.

In the 20th century, the number of giraffes was significantly reduced due to uncontrolled hunting, various diseases and the destruction of natural habitat conditions. Today, the greatest number of giraffes lives in the protected areas of national parks. Giraffes are one of the few animals, which in captivity feel good and regularly bring offspring.

Giraffes live almost without sleep, among all mammals they have the smallest need for this. Giraffe sleeps on average no more than 2 hours a day. But sometimes it is enough to take a break and 10 minutes. Surely everyone wondered how the giraffes sleep? They are so high. Giraffes sleep both standing and lying. In the pose lying, the sleeping giraffe bends her neck, sweeps his legs and puts his head on the croup.

Giraffes live in small herds or one. There are no strict affection in herds. Everyone can freely leave the herd or also freely go to another. The number of herds fluctuates depending on the season and can be from 4 to 32 individuals. The flock of giraffes may consist of both individuals of different floors and one-sex. In search of food, the animal giraffe can bypass up to 100 km². Quite often you can see the giraffes that move together with the flocks of antelope or zebras. So they are in greater security.

The hierarchy and social behavior of the giraffes in the herd have not yet been investigated. Although the main leader has no giraffes, the elders and strong males have an advantage over others. Also in herds, where only females are, leadership takes the oldest female. When two adult male meet, they often occur between them. In the duel, they try to hit each other heads around the neck. Despite this, the defeated males are not expelled from the herd, unlike other social animals, for example, wolves.

The marriage period is also often accompanied by fights between males, but at this time they become significantly aggressive. Opponents can find out the attitude of the tree, while everyone tries to press the enemy to the trunk and strike his head in the neck. Fortunately, the giraffes do not apply their main weapon to each other - dangerous blows with front hooves. At least there were no such cases. Sociate strikes they usually defend against predators. The winner of the defeated male does not pursue.

Giraffes are mistakenly considered gefless animals. They simply communicate with each other at low frequencies that are indistinguishable for human hearing. However, the giraffes still publish the sounds that we can hear. They can snort, whistling and roar, notifying in such a way in case of danger, as well as when looking for a loving young.

    What do giraffes eat?

Giraffe - animal herbivore. Therefore, the giraffes eat exclusively vegetable food. Thanks to the structure of the body and physiology, the giraffes eate the foliage of woody crowns located on a considerable height where any competition is missing. Giraffes eat acacia, giving the greatest preference to this tree.

The giraffe captures the branch with its long language and pulls it to the mouth to pour leaves, while pulling the head back. Acacia spiny branches, but the tongue and lips of the giraffe are arranged in such a way that they allow them to be powered without damage.

On the day, the giraffe eats up to 30 kg of food, spending most of the time for the meal. In hungry times, the giraf is enough and 7 kg of food. It is curious that by how giraffes eat, it is possible to determine the animal floor from the distance. The males of giraffes eat preferably very highly growing leaves, while they strongly pull the neck and throw their heads. The female giraffes eat the leaves that grow at the level of their body, so they usually they lower the neck.

An animal giraffe can do without water even longer camel. After all, food completely covers its need for fluid. However, if the giraf fell the opportunity to drink, at times he can drink up to 38 liters of water. To drink the water Giraffe must spread the front legs wide and lower the head low enough. Such a pose makes the giraffe with bad and vulnerable to predators, so the giraffes drink only when they are confident in their safety. In the same position of the giraffe in the hungry time pinched grass.

Giraffes polygamous animals. Females become capable of reproduction at the age of 3-4 years, but for the first time the offspring is produced by 5 years. In males, the reproduction period occurs at the age of 4-5 years. Young males are difficult to compete with older males. Therefore, young people can take off the offspring only by 7 years of life.

The marriage season at Giraffes falls from July to September. The duration of the pregnancy of the giraffe is 14-15 months. Usually only one cub giraffe appears. Giraffes are giving birth, in connection with which the cubs of the giraffe at birth falls from a height of about 2 meters. It is not worth worrying, no injections of the Giraffe do not receive.

The Giraffe Born Giraffe has a height of 180 cm and weigh 50 kg. An hour after the birth of the young boosts, and after a few more hours he can run. In the total flock of the cubs of the giraffe are allowed only in a few weeks, at the same time they begin to pinch grass. But the Mother of Mother's Mother Giraffe will eat for almost 1 year.

Giraffes have a nursery, in which females send their cubs. So the mother can be removed from the young to find food and water. On duty overlooking the group of cubs takes place between mothers in turn.

The cubs of the giraffe are born without a rozkin, but at the place of their appearance there is a bundle of dark hair, under which there is a carter. As the rods are growing hardened, turning into horns that begin to grow. Bunches of black wool at the base of the rozle remains young for several years, after which they disappear.

The cubs of the giraffe are growing rapidly, they are movable and very active. Around the age of 1.5 years, the cubs of the giraffe remains with the mother. After that, it starts an independent life. The males usually leave their native herd, but females almost always remain in it. In the wild, the giraffes live about 25 years, and in captivity up to 35 years old.

Thanks to its considerable sizes, the animal giraffe practically does not have natural enemies. Giraffes defend against predators to blows of the front hoofs. Such a blow is able to break the skull to any predator, although there are cases of victory of predators over the giraffes.

Few predators are ready to risk, so attacks on adult individuals rarely happen. Predators most often attack the young. Despite the protection of the mother to 50% of young giraffes, the prey of Lviv, Leopards, Gien and Hyeno-shaped dogs are becoming prey.

Today, a person can say a lot about previously unknown animals. Interesting facts about giraffes, which researchers can talk about today will be surprised to surprise anyone. And, having acquainted with this miracle of nature, he wants to return again and again to return to the zoo only for the sake of a new meeting.

What makes this animal so unusual, interesting and attractive? What adds to himself of the most special charm, thanks to which it does not want to part with the "Giant", and after a person with a fading heart waiting for a new meeting?

Today I would like to tell the interesting facts about the giraffes. Let's look at:

    1. "Giant" from the distant savanna. The idea that giraffe is a very high animal, even children have. But far from everyone knows that the height of the male can reach 6 meters, and the female grows up to 4.6. In this case, the neck of the wondrous being can grow up to 2 meters. The weight of a spotted beast reaches a maximum, 1.5 tons.
    2. Unusual turn of the head. As a person is able to twist with all 360 degrees, and the giraffe does it head. This interesting feature of African animals received due to the unusual joints between the cervical vertebrae, working on the principle of the shoulder joint in humans. Despite its sizes, the animal can lower the neck to the ground, wrapping it around the neck of the female and use it as an instrument in a fight with another male.

    Other facts about giraffe

    1. Rest on earth. Describing interesting facts about giraffes, it is impossible not to tell about this. An animal can even lie on the ground, but it makes it extremely rare. Such a rest is able to harm the resident of Savannah. Since it will have to strain all the muscles of his body for the realization of his body, and in case of failure, the animal simply falls and, most likely, will hurt one of the limbs, which can lead to death in wildlife conditions. How do silent giants sleep? The answer is simple - standing.
    2. High long-livers. In the usual habitat, the giraffes, on average, live up to 25 years.
    3. A solid surface under the legs. The huge weight of the beast does not give him to move where he swallows. The soil under his legs should be hard, otherwise she will simply not stand the onslaught.

    Facts for children

    1. What are interesting facts about giraffes for children? These animals have a long tongue. Places where Spotted Beasts live are characterized by the fact that the leaves are very high. Not only the long neck of the animal, but also the language, the sizes of which are often surprised by kids, help them.
    2. Silent "scientists". Giraffes distinguished themselves and in the sphere of science. Working out a skateman, NASA focused on the unusual features of the animal to carry pressure of 400 mm mercury pillars.
