I’ve been meaning to write about the simplest things for a long time, but at the same time a very effective way to decorate the walls of your home antique paintings in expensive frames or stylish modern still lifes, landscapes, collages, etc.

This method is decoupage on canvas with imitation of painting, or imitation of decoupage on canvas– I’ll also tell and show you about this.

So, let's start with the simplest thing. Artist stores sell things like this: canvas on cardboard. It's thick cardboard with canvas glued to it, and the whole thing is primed and ready for painting.

There are different manufacturers, different prices and different sizes, from the smallest (10x15) to the largest (60x60 cm).

No additional surface preparation is required - we simply glue a napkin or a rice card onto the canvas using the file method, ensuring that the texture of the canvas is visible(some people recommend driving the napkin into the relief, i.e. the canvas, but I just I gently iron the napkin with a brush in the direction of the threads, and that's it.

We get decoupage with the texture of canvas, and the eye perceives it as painting on canvas. Two layers of matte varnish perpendicular to each other (in the direction of the threads) - and can be inserted into the frame.

Once again all the steps in order:

1. Simultaneously selecting a canvas on cardboard and a frame for it, make sure it fits comfortably into your frame.
2. We find napkin of suitable size(keep in mind that it will still stretch), it is advisable to glue it over the entire surface to avoid underpainting. If, after all, the napkin is slightly smaller than the canvas, and the edges are visible, then they need to be painted on, and for this it is very important to use a napkin do not cut, but tear off!!! And from all sides, even along the edges (I keep forgetting about this)!!!
3. Glue the napkin carefully expelling all bubbles. Let's dry it.

It’s a pity that a regular quarter napkin doesn’t stretch as much as it should, and the torn edges are a little visible in the 20x20 frame. I'll have to paint on it.

4. If necessary, paint on it, or just cover with 2 layers of matte varnish.

For an additional effect, you can apply any strokes to some elements. thick transparent voluminous gel(even before varnishing or between layers). I have Maimeri 723. However, try not to get carried away with this gel; I also recommend looking at real oil or acrylic paintings to feel the relief of the strokes, then it will be easier for you to apply the gel realistically. At least on acrylic painting there is very little relief, so I often do without gel.

Here is an example of inept use of gel (my “early”) - the strokes were done somehow, in addition I tried to draw the elements of the picture with color (I added paint to the gel). The result is translucent paint, and working with such paint is very difficult for a beginner if you have no experience in painting.

Napkins with any motifs are suitable for gluing (except - you will have to finish drawing them, creating a beautiful background), or rice cards, or printouts on thin tracing paper. The thinner the paper, the more the texture of the canvas will be visible.

And still try to avoid folds and underdrawing - sanding out folds on a textured surface is very inconvenient, and drawings need to be done a little differently than usual in decoupage, - more picturesque, bold, with strokes of precisely selected paint.

What to do if you don’t have canvas on cardboard at hand? Can be glued to cardboard dense fabric with clearly defined weaves of threads:

1. Cut out the fabric with allowances;
2. We place it on cardboard, fold the edges and glue it;
3. Let's prime with something. It is better to use a thicker product so that the cardboard is less deformed by water (but in any case, it can be dried under a press, then it will level out, or simply bend it in the opposite direction).

Imitation of decoupage on canvas

Another interesting option - imitation decoupage on canvas. If you have slightly thicker paper or simply don’t have a canvas on hand, you can use this option.

We will need:

1. Surface (this may be the back of the frame is made of MDF or even cardboard, or even just glass from the frame!);
2. Primer or acrylic paint, possibly aerosol (for glass) – read about preparing the surface with primers here;
3. Putty without lumps, uniform consistency. The old one is not very suitable, fresh is better;
4. Brush – construction bristles (not artistic);
5. Motif, glue, varnish, brushes, etc., and the frame itself.

Stages of work:

1. If our surface is backdrop made of MDF or thick cardboard, then no preparation is needed. If this glass from frame, degrease it and cover it with a layer of aerosol varnish or glass primer.

2. Mix putty with primer or acrylic construction paint in a ratio of approximately 1:1. We will get a white composition that holds its shape well.

3. Apply our mixture to the surface with a construction brush in vertical stripes, As usual, we carry out the finishing stroke from one edge of the workpiece to the other. Your stripes should look like threads that go in one direction. Dry it.

How to make high-quality decoupage?

The most important stage is thinking through the appearance of the product. Choose a blank, think over the plot and color scheme, make sure you have the necessary equipment.

Most often, napkins are used to decoupage surfaces. It is best to start mastering the technique with them. It is necessary to separate the top layer with the pattern from the two lower ones. Carefully cut out the plot using sharp scissors.

When working with decoupage cards, simply cut out the plot you need or tear it off with your fingers along the contour. This will give the image a natural look.

If you perform decoupage using photographs or paper illustrations, immerse them in water at room temperature for a while. This should be done very carefully to preserve the top layer.

Once the images are thoroughly wet, remove them from the water and peel off the bottom layer of paper. This will be easy to do: the wet paper base literally rolls off under your fingers. Let the drawing dry a little. You can cut out the necessary parts before getting wet or after drying.

At this stage, you can give the image the desired effect. Antique designs will give the product a vintage look. An ordinary tea bag will help to age a drawing or newspaper clippings.

Brew it in boiling water, then cool and blot the image. After drying, the tea forms yellowish-brown streaks, just like old paper.

The next stage is surface preparation. If necessary, sand the surface.

Cover with acrylic primer. If it is not there, dilute PVA glue with water: it will replace the primer. Plastic, glass or ceramic surfaces do not need to be primed. It is necessary to wash off traces of fat from them. Wash them with dishwashing liquid or treat the surface with alcohol.

Now the most difficult stage is gluing the plot onto the base. The image is very thin, so we place it on the base and apply glue on top. It is important to prevent the paper from wrinkles and rolling. Apply glue with a flat brush from the center to the edges, carefully straightening out the folds.

After gluing, let the product dry. Then you can start drawing small details, if necessary. To design the boundaries of the plot, a relief acrylic outline is sometimes used. Patiently wait for it to dry completely.

And finally, the final touch. To preserve all this created beauty, we cover the work with acrylic varnish. If you intend to apply several layers of varnish, make sure that each layer dries thoroughly, and only then apply the next one.

Are you planning to add an antique charm to your product? Cover the dried surface with craquelure varnish. Almost immediately your work will be covered with a fine network of cracks. Keep in mind: the thicker the varnish layer, the wider the cracks.

What do you need to know when working with other surfaces?

At the beginning of the article, we talked about the fact that using the decoupage technique you can decorate almost any flat surface. Fabric is one such surface. The peculiarity of decoupage clothing is the use of a special varnish. They cover the applique at the end of the work.

After the product has dried, it should be ironed through gauze with a slightly heated iron. Wash the product in warm water and wear it with pleasure.

Decoupage of cardboard blanks also has its own rules. The problem is that when smeared with glue, the cardboard is greatly deformed. The solution is to cover the surface of the cardboard with plaster or varnish before starting decoupage.

Gypsum for the primer is diluted with warm water to a thick sour cream. You can also purchase special primer for cardboard. The folds of cardboard blanks are treated with rubber glue. This will avoid deformation.

And high-quality decoupage of decorative candles will help you do... an ordinary spoon. After gluing the plot, the spoon is heated from the concave side, and the convex part is drawn along the drawing. The wax that appears through the image completely replaces the varnish of the candle.

Preparatory work

Gluing to varnish is no worse than gluing to glue. But after drying, you can’t do anything - the napkins become almost monolithic with the product. If you decide to use PVA, you will have to think (or try) to use it diluted or undiluted. Most often it is diluted with ordinary water in a 1:1 ratio. When using such an adhesive composition, you must be prepared for the fact that the napkin gets wet from the water, can be pulled in different directions, and can tear due to careless movements. In general, you need to adapt.

A glue stick is also a good option... if you can get all the bubbles and wrinkles out. This occurs normally on smooth, slippery surfaces. If the surface is rough, this is much more difficult. It is safe to work with egg white, but it is specific, so if you want it, you have to try it.

How and where to apply the adhesive

Beginners usually choose their first object for decoupage to be small in size. In principle, this is not bad. It’s just desirable that the shape be simpler: without a lot of bends.

If the decoration object is small, you can use a brush or fingers to apply the glue. Then use the same “tool” to level the napkin. Use a flat or straight brush - whichever is more convenient for you. Many people prefer to work with their fingers - you can feel all the folds.

When gluing napkins for decoupage, you can apply the glue to the object or to the napkin. They do this and that. When applying to a napkin, again, there are two techniques:

• The glue is applied evenly to the entire piece to be glued, applied to the base in the middle. Using movements from the middle to the edges, air bubbles are expelled and folds are straightened.
• A certain amount of glue is poured into the middle of the fragment. Next, the steps are the same: lay it on the base, smooth it out.

In the second technique, it can be easier to deal with bubbles and folds - with a large amount of semi-liquid glue it is easier.

What and how you do is not important. It is important that there are no wrinkles or bubbles

You can do the same if you spread glue on the base: make a small puddle in the place where you are going to glue the fragment, lay it down, and, lifting the edges, drive out the bubbles and smooth out the folds.

Decoupage of a flat surface: glue + iron

When decorating a flat surface, you can do it easier than driving bubbles through the entire napkin. Apply a layer of PVA glue to the primed surface or coat it with a glue stick. Spread well so that no “tracks” are formed. Let it dry. To speed up the process, you can take a hairdryer.

Place and level the napkin on the dry surface and smooth it with your hands. We place a piece of baking paper on it and begin to smooth it with a hot iron from the edge.

Decoupage for beginners - maybe try something like this?

As the glue heats up, it saturates the napkin. Usually it turns out quite smooth. When everything is glued, coat the top with more glue and let it dry. This is perhaps the easiest way to learn decoupage for beginners.

File+water and glue

Decoupage for beginners using a document file (choose thicker film), water and glue. This method is good if you will decorate with large drawings (cut out). Pour some clean water into the middle of the file and place the cut out fragment in it, face down. We carefully straighten it, expelling bubbles and straightening wrinkles. In a puddle of water this is not difficult.

When the fragment is straightened, lift the edges of the file and drain the water. The design remains stuck to the smooth film. In this state it is convenient to “try it on” and look for the best place for it.

Having found the area where you want to place the decoration, we apply the design on the film and begin to smooth it out. This is a very difficult moment. You need to ensure that at least one edge of the napkin sticks. After one of the edges of the image has been fixed, gradually smoothing and lifting the edge of the film little by little, we ensure that the napkin remains on the base. If you act gradually, gradually gluing the picture to the base, bubbles or folds will not appear. This method is suitable as decoupage for beginners.

When one edge sticks, everything is no longer difficult

The last step is to coat the stuck napkin with diluted PVA glue. After it dries, we apply a protective layer of varnish.

A few secrets

This cannot be called methods of gluing napkins for decoupage. These are little tricks and tricks that can help you get rid of creases faster or better.

1. Before work, the cut out fragments are moistened with water from a spray bottle. The napkin stretches, but when it dries it no longer shrinks. If it has become very warped, it is ironed. Then use it as usual. Since the paper is already straightened, it hardly stretches anymore. Everything goes easier.
2. Moisten the fragment with acrylic varnish in the form of an aerosol. In this case, the napkin will become rigid, it will not stretch or form folds. But varnished, it no longer allows glue to pass through, so we coat the surface with glue and glue the treated napkin onto it.
3. Wet the napkin that is already lying on the base (dry) and only then coat it with glue. It's a little difficult to explain, watch the video.

We eliminate flaws

If the surface is decorated with small torn fragments, from which it is necessary to obtain a single whole, straighten the edges of the fragments with a brush or fingers. If there is color unevenness somewhere, dilute the paint of the desired shade and paint over the translucent base.

When the surface is no longer very wet, but has not yet dried, you can use thin brushes and acrylic paints to draw in the details, add brightness and clarity.

The next step is to decorate the edges of the product. There are different approaches here. In some places you have to trim the edges evenly, painting the sides, in others you can wrap the napkin on the back side and glue it there. In general, this is also a whole science.

Getting it to the finish line is an equally creative process.

After this, you can leave the product to dry. To speed up the process, you can use a hair dryer, but you need to keep it at a considerable distance, move it all the time and make sure that it dries evenly. If after drying you see that there is a fold on the glued napkin, you can still fix it. Take fine-grained sandpaper and sand it. We act gently so as not to damage the drawing around.

Varnishing

The dried product is coated with water-based acrylic varnish. You can use another one, but this one is considered the best. Apply one layer first, and after it dries, apply a second one. You can stop there, but if active use is expected (boxes, chairs, etc.) there may be more layers of varnish - three or four.

Working on a painting

For such work, there are two popular methods - in the first, you need to place the top layer of a napkin over the canvas and carefully cover the product with PVA glue, which was previously diluted in water. You need to work with a brush.

The second method is to lay out the desired part of the napkin on the front side on a file. Afterwards, the file is watered with water and then straightened out as much as possible. The napkin should appear without any folds. On such a file there will only be a napkin that is well processed. The napkin must be attached, like a file, to our base and ironed with top-down movements using your hand, or fabric base. Then, the file must be removed and waited until the picture is fixed at the base of our canvas. After our illustrations have dried, we can add brightness to them using elements of paint.

Decoupage of the product

Even for an amateur, this task will not be so sophisticated and difficult. We carry out our actions along the contours and paint the required range of work specifically in order to improve and decorate the surface of the product.

After this, we do the final work on finishing the drawing. We will use a special varnish coating that will be intended especially for decoupage. Such a coating, at a minimum, will be able to protect the surface from any damage and, at a maximum, will provide your product with the much-needed shine and quality. Wait for the varnish to dry. You can apply several layers of varnish, depending on the coating with variable wait!

All that remains is to place your work of art in the desired part of the room. There are an endless number of similar options and illustrations you can make.

Master Class. Painting using volumetric decoupage technique “Life in a Russian village”

Target: making a painting using the volumetric decoupage technique.
Tasks:
teach the “volumetric decoupage” technique;
develop the child’s imaginative thinking and imagination, his cognitive activity;
cultivate artistic and aesthetic taste and accuracy.

Purpose: interior decoration, holiday gift.

The master class is designed for children from grade 4, teachers, and parents.

For work we will need:

Drawing paper (A4 format), scissors, stationery knife, TITANIUM glue, computer mouse pad, photo frame.

Manufacturing stages:

We print the picture 5 times on drawing paper.

We leave one copy untouched - the basis of our picture. From the next four copies we need to cut out elements that will give a three-dimensional appearance to the picture.

We give each cut out part volume. To do this, place the part on the mat with the pattern down, and use the rings of scissors to press on the part in a circular motion, first along the contour, then inside.

The parts should take a convex shape.

Now we need to glue all the elements to the base. To do this, apply a thick layer of Titan glue to each workpiece. Let the glue set a little (about 1-2 minutes) and then apply it to the base.

We glue the blanks in the same order as we cut them out. There is no need to press the parts hard so that the glue is not squeezed out and the volume is not lost. Give each layer time to dry (5 minutes).

We frame the finished painting.

The painting using the volumetric decoupage technique is ready! We hang the picture on the wall.
