Family matters:
The black sheep (досл.
To be the black sheep – означает быть не таким как все, отличаться, как правило, от родственников.
My younger brother is the black sheep. He is different from the rest of the family.
To see eye to eye (досл.
They split up because they didn’t see eye to eye.
To be not on speaking terms (досл.
The atmosphere is a bit tense right now as my two sisters aren’t on speaking terms.
Get-together
We’re having a family get-together to celebrate my dad’s 80th birthday.
To wear the trousers (досл.
My sister wears the trousers in that marriage! She makes the decisions and tells her husband what to do.
It runs in the family (досл.
I only want one more child, but twins run in our family.
To have a skeleton in the cupboard (досл.
Most families have a skeleton in the cupboard. Something happened in the past that they would prefer to keep secret.
Own flesh and blood (досл.
She’s your sister! How can you say that about your own flesh and blood?

- You may choose your friends; your family is thrust upon you.
- Children are poor men"s riches.
- A babe in the house is a well-spring of pleasure.
- Every mother thinks her own gosling a swan.
- There is at least one rotten apple in every barrel.
- Many a good cow has a bad calf.
- There"s a in every family.
- Blood is thicker than water.
- Like father, like son.
- Like begets like.
- The chip is equal to the wood.
- As the old cock crows, so does the young.
- Jack is as good as Jill.
- A good wife makes a good husband.
Дорожите и вы теплотой семейного очага и помните слова Авраама Линкольна: «Family is not an important thing. It"s everything.»
