How to make your own perfume at home. How to make perfume from essential oils at home? What materials do you need

There may be a lot of reasons for making your own perfume:

  • A good perfume from a boutique is too expensive.
  • Mass market products raise doubts about the safety of the composition.
  • It is difficult to choose your own scent from the offered ones.
  • I would like to create something unique.

Of course, in the first and second cases, it is much easier to buy the ones you like than to start perfume experiments. But if you don't like any of the existing fragrances or want to emphasize your own uniqueness, create!

Introduction to perfumery

Before proceeding to the main stage - cooking, you need to find out the answers to several questions:

What are the ingredients of a perfume?

High-quality perfume consists of readily available components: essential oil, distilled or spring water, medical alcohol or base oil (jojoba, olive), glycerin.

It will not be difficult to buy consumables for creating perfumes. The most expensive ingredient is essential oil. Firstly, the result directly depends on its quality, so you should not save. Secondly, you will not immediately find the perfect recipe, so you will have to try different extracts. And thirdly, several oils are included in the perfume composition at once, they form the initial note, the heart note and the base of the perfume.

How and in what to store homemade perfume?

You can store your homemade perfume in an opaque draft. This container is inexpensive and very easy to use. Extend the life of the cooked with my own hands aroma can be followed simple rules: keep the product away from sunlight; do not heat; avoid contact with skin (use a dispenser for application); choose a bottle of optimal volume - a large airlock spoils the product.

What containers and tools are needed?

Set pipettes essential oils, syringes without a needle for a set of water or alcohol, paper strips for testing odor, a jar of coffee beans (helps you smell better), an opaque bottle for storage, a notebook for notes and the correct calculation of the proportion of components.

How long will it take to cook?

The process of mixing the components itself is not difficult, especially if you are not preparing a perfume for the first time or according to a ready-made recipe. However, once created, the perfume requires aging. The hermetically sealed bottle should be placed in a cool, dark place (not a refrigerator, otherwise the oils will start to freeze!) For 1 to 4 weeks. The alcohol-based perfume will be ready in a week, and the oil-based perfume will take about a month.

Which base is better to choose: oil or alcohol?

Non-spillable and more expensive and considered a premium product.

Alcohol-based fragrances are also noteworthy, as they have several advantages: they are cheaper to prepare, ripen faster, and can be applied to clothing and hair, whereas oily fragrances can only be applied to the skin.

The best essential oils for perfume

Essential oil is a key component of any perfume bouquet. To understand which oils are suitable and which ones are best left aside, you need to figure out what the composition consists of.
The "sound" of the finished product is revealed in three stages: first (5 - 25 minutes) we hear the initial / top note, then - the heart note (up to 5 o'clock), and at the very end - the base or last (up to 8 o'clock).

Accordingly, for a light top note, fresh and not very persistent oils are suitable: citrus, lavender, rose, mint and lemon balm.

For the heart of a perfume composition, you should choose persistent rich aromas, because the general mood of the perfume depends on them: fruity or floral.

The base note is felt at the very end, as a rule, essential oils of clove, cinnamon, frankincense, juniper, cedar, sandalwood are used for this.

In a professional perfume, each note can consist of a dozen different oils, but it is better to start perfume experiments with two or three types of oil for each extract.

Cooking instructions

  • If you decide to use jojoba oil as a base, its amount is 2/3 of the volume of the aroma mixture.
  • Mixing the oils should be started one by one: first, we compose aromatic mixtures of the top note, the heart note and the base note, then mix them into one bouquet. The ideal proportion of each mixture is 1: 2: 3, respectively.
  • When the essential oils are mixed, add alcohol. In the amount of 70 - 80% of the volume of oil for medium harsh perfumes, for heavy - 30%, for thin and light - 90%.
  • Checking the aroma of the mixture. If it is too harsh, you can add a couple of drops of lavender oil to soften the smell. If, on the contrary, is rather weak, add a couple of drops of the base mixture. Do not be afraid to break the proportion - in such a delicate matter you need to rely on your instinct!
  • We close the bottle tightly and send it to a dark, cool place.
  • After 3 days, shake the contents of the bottle and add distilled or spring water in the same amount as the alcohol. We send the perfume to infuse.
  • Depending on the base, your perfume will be ready in 7 to 30 days. Throughout the infusion period, the bottle should be shaken thoroughly every 3 days.

When your unique scent is ready, do not forget to tell your friends about this wonderful experiment. After all, this is how a hobby turns into

  • quality essential oils;
  • medical alcohol;
  • distilled water;
  • container for storing perfume;
  • test strips.

Briefly about all the components of the process:

  • essential oils should only be of high quality. The problem with low-quality essential oils is that the absolute majority of them are synthetic oils. And how sad it is to say, but most of the pharmacies sell just such oils. Firstly, the smell is very distorted, and secondly, there will be no therapeutic (or other) benefit from such oils. Some women take up self-production perfume in order to create a composition that is. But synthetic oil plays a different tune and often gives a very different result. How to determine whether the oil is of high quality, look here in this article -;
  • alcohol - it is needed for the production of alcohol-based perfumes. There is only one rule here - take a medical one, not a technical one;
  • distilled water is needed to dilute perfume. It is sold either in pharmacies or in car dealerships;
  • the container for storing perfume should be with a very tight (lapped) lid. You can, in principle, take a bottle from an old perfume, but here it is important that no residual odors remain (which is very difficult to achieve). High-quality perfume practically on top of it leaves a light trace of scent;
  • test strips are ordinary flat cardboard. They are needed to select the smells you need and determine the compatibility of aromas. The easiest way is to cut a children's creativity kit out of white cardboard. Or cardboard, which manufacturers of tights put into packaging, is perfect.

How to make perfume correctly

First you need to understand the essential oils and find out how to choose essential oils for perfume?

The French are recognized leaders in perfumery. And once upon a time, back in the 19th century, the famous perfumer Pisse proposed the division of fragrances into 3 groups, notes as in music. This classification is also called the pyramid of notes:

  • aromas top note(initial note) - in music, the top notes are high and light, usually the listener hears them as the main melody. It is exactly the same in perfumery, these are the smells that appear first, you feel the first, but they are the first to evaporate (the most volatile aromas). The first come, first and go principle. The top notes disappear within 5-10 minutes. That is why you cannot choose a perfume without waiting for the base scent to appear.
  • aroma middle note(heart notes) are the scents that associate high and low note scents. These aromas last from 3 to 5 hours. Since this is the brightest part of the chord in a perfume, non-obtrusive and non-harsh scents are used as the middle note. It is this scent that should make the main impression.
  • aromas base note- these are the most persistent, long-lasting fragrances, the foundation of the composition. These are usually heavy and rich odors. This is the sillage of the composition, which lasts from 5 to 8 hours and unfolds, either with the heart note or after the aroma of the middle note has evaporated.

According to experts, the following ratio is considered ideal:

  1. top note - 30%;
  2. middle note - 50%;
  3. the base note is 20%.

Of course, this proportion is not strictly adhered to.

What scent belongs to each individual note scent

To distribute aromas according to notes, it is easier to first find out which class a particular scent belongs to. There are several options for classifying scents: French school of perfumers, German, American ... And depending on the school of perfumery, fragrances are divided into 20-30 types. But the most famous and simple ones that will be clear to a novice perfumer are:

  • citrus: scents of citrus (lemon, orange, tangerine, lime ...) and herbs and plants that smell like citrus (verbena, lemongrass ...)
  • green: it is the smell of greenery (basil, celery, hemp ....), leaves (bay, tea, tobacco ...), cut grass, green vegetables (cucumber)
  • spicy: warm and sensual aromas of spices (paprika, cinnamon, cocoa, saffron, nutmeg ...)
  • floral: aroma of flowers (rose, jasmine, carnation, hyssop, heather, acacia ...). It is rich in shades and nuances and a huge range of flavor play.
  • fruit: mainly tropical and exotic fruits (grapes, figs, pineapple, pomegranate, pear, peach ...)
  • trees and mosses: a real treasure of scents. It is a woody and earthy smell (oak, cedar, cypress, patchouli, bamboo, thuja, rosewood ...)
  • balms and resins: these are the most ancient fragrances and the most ancient perfumery. This group includes: incense, myrrh, styrax, balsamic vinegar ...
  • musk and amber: this is the scent secreted by the secrets of some animals (whale, beaver ...). It is a scent that evokes an olfactory sexual appeal. Many plants have aromas similar to those of natural musk and ambergris. Among them are labdanum, angelica, ambrette seeds.

And now which scents belong to which note:

  1. top note: citrus, green, spicy.
  2. middle note: floral, fruity and some spicy aromas.
  3. base note: these are the last 3 groups - trees and mosses, balsams and resins, musk and amber.

And now finally - how to make perfume at home, the process itself.

Recipes

The first thing I did was from the home assortment of quality essential oils, I selected those scents that I like and will sound good personally to MY taste in perfume. I have essential oils of the "Kingdom of Aromas" company. These are Crimean and very high quality broadcasts. Highly recommend!

We do not use base oils (almond, apricot kernels ...)

On strips of cardboard, I applied a drop of each of the essential oils and then put them together, waving with a slight movement, trying to catch - do I like the combination of all these smells together. It is difficult for an inexperienced perfumer to guess what melody these scents will play after the final mixing and after the perfume has matured.

So, I stopped at 3 ethers:

  • top note - ginger (spicy smell)
  • middle note - lavender (floral scent) + ylang-ylang (floral scent)

And 4th as the base note, I chose patchouli

Everything is intuitive, because this is magic, this is creativity!

And she began to add oil drop by drop to the bottle. If you don't have a high-quality dispenser in a bottle of oil, you need a pipette.

  • top note - 8 drops (31%)
  • medium - 6 + 10 = 16 drops (61%)
  • basic - 2 drops (8%)

Now add alcohol and distilled water. The classic calculation is approximately the following: for 10-15 drops of essential oil, we take 10 ml of alcohol and 10 ml of distilled water.

In order not to forget the composition and in the future it was possible to experiment, I made a label on the bottle indicating the number of drops of essential oils.

As a result, the perfume came out to my taste: not heavy, attractive, evening, absolutely not floral, but with a spicy love trail ....))) This is a perfume with aphrodisiacs for women. Name??? Probably - "Summer Night".

So you learned how to make a perfume with your own hands at home. It's simple and incredibly exciting, it's feminine magic. I would recommend perfume lessons to all women to gain femininity and harmony.

An important advice - try, experiment, everything is possible…. The main rule is that YOU should like perfume!

If you dream of a unique scent that will suit you, try to create it yourself, because such an experiment will require very few materials. Various scents are created using aromatic essential oils. By using quality ingredients and following the rules of preparation, you can create a persistent and mesmerizing aroma.

Odor categories

All the scents that surround us can be divided into families. Knowing these groups will help create an interesting and well-coordinated composition in a perfume. Essential oil scents fall into the following categories.

  • Citrus. Includes natural citrus fruit aromas. The scents we are accustomed to can create interesting scents combined with floral and woody ones.
  • Floral. These scents are often used in pairs in perfumery. Essential oils of this group will remind you of a bouquet of fresh roses or a lilac bloom. These are light and springy smells.
  • Woody. They are distinguished by unobtrusive sweetness and astringency. Such scents are refined and give the perfume green freshness. This also includes mild but intense herbal scents.

  • Aromatic (fern). They are distinguished by their freshness. This family includes the heavy scent of oakmoss, which is commonly used to capture the overall scent. Pink-mint geranium can bring a freshness to a perfume product that lasts a long time.
  • Eastern. Sweet and very sensual. These include musk and amber oils combined with bark, resin and vanilla. This category is considered one of the most ancient, and includes both women's and men's fragrances. Smells always have an earthy note and are distinguished by restraint.
  • Spicy. They are similar to oriental ones, but have more astringency. The oils of cinnamon, pepper, ginger and other spices are combined to create the aroma.

  • Chypre. They are based on bergamot, oak moss. Such scents are considered classic for the creation of masculine perfumes. If you combine chypre fragrances with citrus, you get a unisex perfume.
  • Leather. Similar fragrances are those that combine floral scents with juniper oil and woody notes. Such mixtures are used to create men's perfumery. The aromas are reminiscent of the familiar smells of smoke, tobacco or fire.
  • Aquatic. They resemble the smells of dew, fog, summer rain. To create the composition, mint is combined with herbal and citrus oils. This combination is the hardest to make at home. For the end result, synthetic components are often used.

Different scent categories are often combined to create complex scents. So, the combination of oriental or spicy with fresher woody or fruity is very popular.

Necessary materials

It is quite easy to make a unique fragrance from essential oils at home. To make liquid perfume, you will need the following materials.

  • The foundation. Usually, jojoba oil is used, but it is important to follow the recipe and use a small amount of the ingredient. Otherwise, the scent of the perfume will become noticeably weaker. You can use regular olive oil, almond oil. Ethyl alcohol is also used as a base.
  • Essential oils. You will need at least 3 components.

  • Distilled water. Such a component is only needed if you are making alcoholic perfumes.

Myrrh, sandalwood, vanilla are aromatic fixing oils that fix the fragrance and allow it to last for a long time, giving off its scent. For scented lotion, castor oil or grape seed oil can be used as a fixative.

A pipette, preferably a glass one. To measure liquids drop by drop.

Several vials or bottles, always glass - it is in these that the perfume will be best preserved.

Cooking process

Use a pipette to measure out the amount of fixative, oils and alcohol base you require. Place all this in a bottle or vial, and mix all the ingredients.

Before adding the next essential oil to the vial, you need to wipe the dropper with alcohol or vodka.

There are no strict proportions in perfumery, everything will depend on your taste.

We bring to your attention a lot of recipes for already created and tested aromas, which you can also try on yourself. We hope that among the recipes below, you will find the one that you like, will be your faithful ally, create the right mood, endow you with the necessary qualities and inspire you to create your own perfume composition!

"Morning breeze"

  • 100 ml of an alcohol base (30% alcohol in 70% water);
  • 15 drops of bergamot oil;
  • 10 drops of rosemary oil;
  • 5 drops of sandalwood
  • 5 drops of neroli oil

Pink perfume

Rose is considered the queen of flowers for a reason. Her aroma is loved all over the world. There is practically no perfume aroma, where the hint of rose would not be used. Try to prepare your own unique rose perfume. The recipe is very simple.

In a small glass bottle, combine the following ingredients:

  • 1/2 teaspoon rubbing alcohol (vodka)
  • 6 drops essential oil of rose
  • 3 drops essential oil of geranium
  • 8 drops essential oil of sandalwood

Shift carefully, store in a cool place for about 1 week.

Depending on the source, rose essential oil can sound very deep, rich, sweet-floral, or, on the contrary, slightly spicy and unobtrusive. Damask oils (Bulgarian) or Сentifolia (French cabbage) roses are the most preferred oils for perfume composition. With its velvety floral smoothness, the scent of these roses will soften any sharp notes that arise in your unique perfume.

It is not necessary to strictly adhere to the above recipe.

Try making some adjustments by replacing one or two with other essential oils, such as lavender, jasmine, orange blossom, vanilla or bergamot. All these scents go well with the rose note.

In short, experiment, seek empirically the most optimal aroma solution for you. And, most importantly, do not forget to write down what, when and how you did it.

Scent of the tropics

If you are not a lover of pink aromas, but prefer the exciting, sparkling scent of tropics and spices, then the following recipe is just for you!

Take a medium-sized glass jar and mix in it:

  • 1 glass of vodka
  • 2 tablespoons rum
  • 2 tablespoons orange blossom water
  • 2 tablespoons of cinnamon sticks
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons cloves
  • 3 tablespoons orange peel
  • 4 large bay leaves

Place in a dark place and swirl the contents of the bottle daily for a week.

After the expiration date, strain and add essential oils in the following amount:

  • 30 drops essential oil of orange
  • 4 drops of lavender (essential oil of lavender)
  • 3 drops essential oil of neroli, or orange-flower.

Move back to dark place for 1-2 weeks. This fairly light eau de toilette can be poured into atomizers. During hot seasons, store the scent bottle in the refrigerator.

Citrus cologne

Citrus scent is one of the most popular natural refreshing scents. He is a great depressant. This refreshing cologne is a snap to prepare.

In a small bottle, mix:

  • 1/2 tablespoon rubbing alcohol
  • 6 drops essential oil of orange
  • 6 drops essential oil of bergamot
  • 2 drops essential oil of lavender
  • 1 drop essential oil of rosemary
  • 2 drops essential oil of rosewood
  • 1 drop essential oil of peppermint

Since the aroma of mint is very intense, it can "break" the perfume composition. If the sound of mint is too intense, in your opinion, dilute 1 drop of peppermint essential oil in half a tablespoon of alcohol or vodka.

Shake well and remove to infuse in a cool dark place for one week.

The resulting cologne combines the classic trio of citrus, lavender and rosemary. Rosewood scent and tropical floral-wood oils act as a scent fixer. Mint, on the other hand, adds a fresh, piquant note to the aroma.

Lilac

The sweet scent of lilac evokes the most romantic associations. It is appropriate at any time of the day or year.

The aroma of lilac saves from melancholy, cheers up, gives freshness of spirit and vigor.

  • 2 drops of essential oil of lilac or lilac-fragrance oil
  • 2 drops essential oil of rose
  • 1 drop essential oil of ylang-ylang
  • 2 drops essential oil of balsam of Peru
  • 1 drop essential oil of orris or iris

If, for some reason, iris essential oil is not available, replace it with violet oil or completely exclude it from the recipe. If you think toffee sounds too rich, dilute it in the same proportions as the peppermint oil in the previous recipe.

Shake vigorously and remove to infuse for a week.
