DIY plywood trays. DIY natural wood tray

This elegant and functional item can be crafted in a couple of weekends. Beautifully patterned woods such as undulating maple add extra appeal to the tray.

First, make bow handles

1. From a 25 mm cherry plank, cut four pieces of the specified length for the halves of the temples. A (fig. 1 and photo A)(read the "Craftsman's Tip" below to properly orient the workpieces in relation to the direction of the grain of the wood). Keeping the original parallelogram shape on the blanks makes the next step easier.

Mark the handle blank as shown with the wood grain diagonally. We oriented the squares at an angle of 30 °, but the angle may be different depending on the width of the board and the direction of the grain in it.

The temples will be strong if the fibers converge at the top. Distribute the blanks for the temple halves A by pairs and choose the most attractive combinations. Orient the fibers in each pair so that they form a triangle at the junction, the apex of which is directed upward, as on the left bow. Label each pair with matching marks at the seam to align them in the final gluing. The right arch is glued from halves, the fibers of which converge at the bottom. Such a bow will be fragile, since the fibers in several places are directed across the section, and it can break during assembly or when using a tray.

Sawing end fibers is difficult, so 51 mm deep grooves are best done in several passes. Press the workpiece firmly with the pusher against the longitudinal stop of the machine.

2. Install a slotted disc 10 mm thick into the saw machine and make halves in one of the ends of each workpiece A groove (fig. 1 and photo B). To securely support the workpieces, attach a high wooden plate to the longitudinal (parallel) stop of the machine. Having cut the grooves, saw off the blanks to a square shape with a side of 114 mm.

3. From wood of a contrasting color (we chose corrugated maple), cut a blank 114 × 305 mm for the dowels V, two blanks 51 × 483 mm for longitudinal walls WITH and two blanks 51 × 330 mm for end walls D... Sharpen these workpieces on a thicknessing machine, adjusting their thickness to the width of the grooves cut out in the workpieces of the half-arms (fig. 1 and 2). Set aside the wall blanks and cut out the dowels of the indicated sizes. Glue two blanks of handles, connecting each pair of halves A with a key inserted into the grooves.

With the workpiece flat, raise the saw blade so that it only passes through the inner wall of the tongue and does not touch the other wall.

4. When the glue is dry, carefully line up the bottom edge of each piece A / B and in four passes cut a tongue with a section of 10 × 51 mm (Fig.1a). Saw off the part of the tongue wall from the inside to a width of 12 mm (photo C).

5.Using a compass, mark on the workpieces A / B outer and inner radii (fig. 1). Also mark the centers of the screw holes on the outside of each workpiece. Make counterbores with a mounting hole in the outer wall of the tongue and groove. Using a bandsaw or jigsaw, carefully cut the handles along the contour, sand them to the final shape, and then mill 6 mm twists on the edges. Finish the handles with 220 grit sandpaper.

Tray making

1. Take the workpieces of the longitudinal and end walls cut out earlier and cut to the required thickness C, D... Arrange them as they will be glued and label each one for later processing and final assembly. Saw at the bottom edge of each workpiece from the inside of the tongue, the width of which corresponds to the thickness of the F (fig. 2).

2. Tilt the saw blade at an angle of 45 ° and file the bevels at the ends of the longitudinal WITH and end D walls, giving them the final length (fig. 2).

Sawing narrow grooves on bevels, guide the wall workpiece with a transverse (angular) stop, and the longitudinal stop will serve as a stop. This operation is safe as the cut will not go through.

3. Without changing the position of the saw blade, make on the bevels of the longitudinal and end walls C, D cuts 5 mm deep for dowels (fig. 2, photoD).

Quick tip! For these narrow keyways, it is better to use a 50-tooth, variable bevel-tooth combination saw blade, and flat-topped teeth that form a flat bottom of the cut that does not require additional machining.

4. From cherry wood, make a blank 51 × 305 mm for the dowels E and cut it to a thickness of 3 mm, adjusting to the width of the cuts in the walls C, D... Saw off the keys to the required length so that they fit snugly into the corresponding cuts (fig. 2).

5. Saw out the bottom F and file its corners so that you can insert the dowels E (fig. 3). Put the tray dry C-F to check and fit all connections. Finish sanding inner sides walls C, D and both sides of the bottom F sandpaper No. 220.

6. Assemble the tray C-F by applying glue to the keyways, bevels and dowels to insert the bottom. After thoroughly drying, sand the edges and outer surfaces with 220 grit sandpaper.

Final assembly

1. Apply a thin layer of glue to the inner walls of the tongue of one of the handles A and put it on the end wall D aligning exactly in the middle. Drill 1.6 x 20 mm pilot holes for the screws by gluing a masking tape flag to the drill to act as a depth gauge. Then fix the shackle with screws. (fig. 2). Wipe off excess glue with a damp cloth. Install the second bail handle in the same way.

2. Use a 6mm plug drill to make maple plugs and glue them into the counterbores to cover the screw heads. When the adhesive is dry, flush off the protruding parts of the plugs and sand smoothly.

3. Apply the finishing coat. We used a natural formulation (called Danish oil) to enhance the iridescent pattern of the rippled maple tree and then applied three coats of a water-based semi-matt polyurethane varnish to provide reliable protection from moisture and dirt.

DIY wooden tray, construction drawings, detailed description and assembly order.

The design allows you to carry various objects in such a way that nothing rolls off it, thanks to the sides along the bottom perimeter. A carefully crafted piece of wood will suit any kitchen as long as it is kept in the same style.

The figure shows a detailing of the tray:

The cross-piece and the handle can be made from different varieties wood.

Cut from a sheet of moisture-resistant plywood with a thickness of 6 (mm). We mark the center and drill through holes for the used countersunk head screws. From the back side, we will drill the holes with a large drill, the diameter of which should be equal to the diameter of the head of the screw used. We will smooth out sharp edges and apply a decorative paint and varnish coating.

Wooden tray manufacturing technology:

1. We will prepare the necessary material.
2. We will make all the assembly parts.
3. We connect the longitudinal and transverse sides into a spike for an adhesive connection. We fix the resulting frame, strictly observing a right angle between the sides. Drill Ø 5 (mm) through holes in the corners. Insert wooden dowels 5 x 25 (mm) into the holes with glue.
4. Insert the handles into the grooves of the transverse collars, using glue. Along the edges of the handles, from above, we will drill holes Ø 5 (mm), 20 (mm) deep. Insert wooden dowels 5 x 20 (mm) into the holes with glue.

5. Carefully remove the squeezed glue.
6. After the glue dries, proceed to finishing the assembled tray frame:

we will cover the front surfaces with a decorative paint and varnish layer

7. Screw the bottom to the frame with wood screws.

A beautiful tray is a multifunctional thing; it is at least a stylish interior accessory and kitchen item for conveniently transporting food and drinks. Quality store products, even if they are classic options, are expensive. But after spending a little time and effort, it is quite possible to make a tray with your own hands, while receiving an original product that can become an invaluable family heirloom. To create it is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance.

You can make a home tray out of wood, plywood, glass, and decorative items. It should be understood that not every type of wood is suitable for making kitchen trays. Masters recommend using:

  • birch;
  • linden;
  • cherries;
  • mulberry;
  • alder;
  • maple;

Resinous tree species (pine, spruce) are not suitable for the manufacture of kitchen utensils, since the food will quickly absorb the coniferous smell.

The tray is enough simple design... A flat bottom, framed on four sides by bumpers, is easy to make from old things, for example:

  • picture frames;
  • doors from a broken kitchen table;
  • ordinary thick boards and slats.

Using plywood to make a tray is not always rational. On the one hand, the material is extremely malleable, allowing you to easily implement almost any idea, on the other hand, the plywood tray will not turn out to be particularly durable, and therefore impractical. Therefore, it is suitable only for interior decoration.

To make an accessory, you must select the appropriate inventory. The number of tools depends on the complexity of the product. Before starting all the manipulations to create a tray, you need to prepare:

  • jigsaw;
  • screwdriver;
  • glue gun with plastic rods;
  • furniture stapler;
  • sandpaper;
  • simple pencil;
  • saw-grinder;
  • ruler.

Everything necessary tools are conventionally divided into groups. Some are designed for taking measurements and drawing. Others are needed for drilling, sawing material. The third group of devices is required for fastening parts.

Drawing up a drawing

Before making any thing, including a tray, a sketch is preliminarily drawn. There are two ways to create a project. In the first case, the master starts from the available material that he has in stock. In the second, the drawing depicts an imaginary tray, after which only the necessary raw materials are bought.

The parameters of the future product are preliminarily measured. The tray should be comfortable and lightweight. Too heavy a structure will be difficult to transfer from the kitchen to the room. Next, you need to decide what functions the tray should perform. It can be equipped with removable or folding legs or have the form of a rectangular flat plate with sides. If necessary, this model is used as a lightweight portable bedside table.

Implementation of an idea begins with design. Based on the sketch and the selected dimensions, an accurate drawing is created, which shows the required parameters and the proposed fasteners. Drawings of plywood transfer plates include:

  1. Thickness of materials (base, sides).
  2. Width, length of the base.
  3. Fixing points for fittings.

Complex products are made of wood with the use of various attachment points, legs, as well as details that add rigidity to the structure. The drawing should indicate:

  1. Thickness of all raw materials.
  2. Fixing points for fittings and decor elements.
  3. Attachment points for legs and docking points.

Drawings for such portable tables are built in three-dimensional projection.

Manufacturing steps based on the model

Do-it-yourself wooden tray using a drawn drawing. The foreman prepares fasteners and other connecting elements. The simplest models, which are a flat board with sides and handles, are made according to a simplified scheme. To make them, it is enough:

  1. Saw out a rectangular base of the desired size.
  2. Prepare a frame corresponding to the dimensions of the base.
  3. Attach the handles to the frame.
  4. Decorate the bottom.
  5. Connect the base to the frame.

Sophisticated portable mini-tables are made in the same way. The difference is that attachment points for the legs are additionally fixed to the base. Holders and decorative handles are purchased at furniture stores. Decorate the product at the end of the work. The method of decoration is chosen at the request of the master, based on the general interior of the room, the material from which the tray will be made. At the end of the work, the surface must be filled with varnish or painted. The water-repellent coating will protect the portable device from liquids.

For breakfast in bed

It is quite difficult to make a model of a tray on legs for breakfast in bed, the master must at least be able to use the tools correctly. A portable mini-table can be created from a rectangular cut of plywood, a board, of a suitable size. The list of materials depends on the model and design of the structure. To make a breakfast tray, you need to prepare:

  • a 40 × 70 cm board or thick plywood (any tree will do, except pine and spruce);
  • 4 metal tubes 1 meter long;
  • corners with a diameter of 15 mm - 8 pieces;
  • tees - 4 pieces;
  • gaskets with a diameter of 15 mm - 4 pieces;
  • varnish or stain.

The mini-table is convenient in that it does not need to be installed on your lap, it is easily fixed on the bed surface. Detailed steps will show you how to useful thing on one's own:

  • Metal pipes are cut with a pipe cutter or grinder into several pieces, while the edges should remain even, without dents. In total you should get:
    • 4 pieces of 25 cm;
    • 2 pieces of 58 cm;
    • 4 pieces of 19 cm;
    • 4 tubes of 6 cm.
  • Install the handles. Two tubes 25 cm long are connected at the ends with six-centimeter segments using corners and plastic glue. The finished handles are applied to the surface of the board and indicate the attachment points. In the designated places, holes are drilled equal to the diameter of the tubes (16 mm). The surface of the board is sanded on both sides. After the surface of the wood becomes sufficiently smooth, it is covered with wood stain or varnished. O-rings are placed over the holes and secured with plastic glue. The handles are inserted into the holes. Legs (rack) are attached to the prepared tabletop:
    • using tees, 2 pipes of 58 cm each (located horizontally under the tray) and 4 racks of 19 cm each (legs) are connected;
    • the upper sections of the legs are inserted into the holes and fixed with mounting glue;
    • using the remaining corners, the legs of the tray are connected in pairs with two tubes of 25 cm each.

If these parts are not attached with glue, they will easily detach from the main accessory sheet. A tray with folding legs is made according to the same principle as for folding beds. The elements themselves are attached to the base using pivoting mechanisms, and they are locked with hooks or loops.

From an old picture

It is very easy to make a wooden tray from an old picture. All that is needed for this is the picture itself in the frame, the appropriate tools. This tray does not need additional decoration. To make kitchen utensils you will need:

  • two decorative door handles;
  • a piece of plywood;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • screwdriver.

Door handles are screwed to the sides of the frame. The picture itself is taken out, the base is cut out of the plywood by its size. The canvas with the image is glued to the surface of the prepared plywood. The decorated plywood sheet is varnished on the front side, allowed to dry, then screwed to the frame with self-tapping screws. The tray is ready.

Any novice craftsman can make a tray from a photo frame. In the store, they choose a frame of a suitable size with a plywood base, if there is none, you will have to redo the usual one with a cardboard bottom. The work is carried out as follows:

  1. The cardboard base and glass are separated from the frame.
  2. Holes are drilled in the frame on both sides, and then furniture handles are attached to it with self-tapping screws.
  3. The plywood base is cut to the size of the cardboard.
  4. The cardboard is decorated in any way possible, then glued to the plywood using PVA wood glue.
  5. The base and glass are attached to the frame with a furniture stapler.

The sides and bottom of the converted product are painted or decorated with decorative elements. In a furniture store you can find a large number of interesting details for decorating kitchen furniture. They decorate the resulting portable plate.

With slate board

On a tray with a slate board, you can write romantic messages to your loved one. It is very easy to make such kitchen utensils. It is enough to buy slate paint in the store and paint the bottom of the tray with it.

For this purpose, a purchased (glass, ceramic, metal) or handmade product is suitable. The main thing is that the bottom surface is suitable for painting.

Instead of slate paint, it is advisable to use chalk wallpaper. Both manufacturing methods result in the same effect.

With mosaic

Creating a design on a tray using mosaics takes patience. However, wooden utensils decorated with such an ornament look extraordinarily beautiful. Classic mosaics are made from ceramic elements or glass pieces. In everyday life, they use the most unexpected materials at hand.

A preliminary sketch is drawn, on the basis of which the sketch is developed. The image, taking into account the size of the finished product, is created in color. Mosaic can be made from any suitable material:

  • small colored shells;
  • flat pieces of broken glass;
  • colored stones;
  • colored eggshell;
  • tile broken into small fragments;
  • cut colored paper.

Each individual piece is glued to the wooden surface of the bottom of the tray. Transparent "Moment" is used as an adhesive. You can also use molten plastic. After the mosaic is ready, it is poured with transparent furniture varnish.

Craftsmen with basic drawing skills can color the product according to their own taste. Ornament covers the sides and bottom of the tray. Decorative painting is done in any style and direction. Painting with oil and acrylic at the end of the work is covered with a layer of varnish.

It is much easier and faster to decorate a tray using a photo from a magazine or a poster of a suitable size. The wooden bottom is pasted over with a picture, and then filled with several layers of varnish. The product is left to dry, only then is it used in everyday life.

A tray decorated with a photograph and rose petals looks interesting. A photo with a life-size image of a flower is glued to the bottom. Then several petals are laid out on it so that they do not rise too much above the plane. The volumetric part can rise at the edges within 2-3 mm. Transparent and colored beads are poured around the flower and on its petals. The whole composition is filled with transparent varnish.

The most unexpected material can be chosen for decoration. The main thing is a little imagination and adherence to technology. The bottom of the tray is usually decorated with:

  • a mosaic of multi-colored flat buttons and woolen threads;
  • an applique made of patches or gold coins;
  • collage from pieces of postcards;
  • dry leaves, flowers;
  • straw ornament;
  • mat.

Tray handles can also be custom made. For example, instead of ready-made store accessories, weave them from newspaper tubes, build them from glued wine corks or a piece of a wide leather belt. Alternatively, wrap the simplest plastic handles with thick twine. For decorative legs of the tray with your own hands, use a piece of PVC pipe painted in any desired color or a wooden dowel. With the skills of wood carving, this part can be made in any shape.

No matter which of the proposed options is chosen, a do-it-yourself tray will in any case become a vivid embodiment of an individual artistic intention. An experienced craftsman can create a complex multifunctional design, and novice home creators will at least be able to remake a boring picture or poster in a frame.

What features should each tray have? Naturally, this is convenience and practicality. In other words, so that the transferred food does not roll off it. These requirements are fully met by the product provided in this article. The right color and material makes the tray very nice and comfortable, so it suits most modern styles.

To create a wooden tray, you do not need to rack your brains over tools and materials; you can easily purchase everything you need at your nearest hardware store. Decide on the color of varnish and paint that will go perfectly with. But you should understand that you need to avoid buying varnish with a very pungent smell - this can harm your health.

Below are the standard sizes tray, however, you will be able to choose the one that suits you.

Wooden tray - tools and materials

There is a lot of work to be done, but you should not be afraid of it. By adhering to our recommendations, you will definitely succeed! But first, you need to prepare the following:

  • jigsaw;
  • electric drill;
  • drill with a diameter of 2.5 cm.;
  • a hacksaw with a fine pitch of teeth;
  • hammer (where can we go without it?);
  • roulette;
  • massive scissors;
  • simple pencil;
  • paint brush;
  • a pair of rubber gloves and newspaper.

For a high-quality and reliable product, it is best to take a hard wood. Red oak is ideal. Approximate thickness is 2.5 centimeters. In this case, you will need:

  • a pair of boards 9x32 cm;
  • a pair of boards 6.5x56 cm;
  • one board 32x61 cm.

Choose a varnish depending on the drying area. If the products will be dried in the open air, you can take an oil-based varnish. Otherwise, opt for a water-soluble varnish.

Manufacturing instruction

Initially, you need to make marks for future pens. There is nothing complicated here, just rely on the drawing.

Determine the middle on the board (9x32 cm), then step back left and right by 5 centimeters. There you need to drill holes. In our case, drills with a diameter of 2.5 cm play a very important role, since all this will affect the dimensions in the end. Drill only at right angles, avoiding uneven holes.

After you have drilled the holes, you need to draw them together with a simple pencil. Then walk along these lines with a jigsaw, thus forming the handles. Be sure to sand them down as they should be smooth.

Now that all the parts are ready, you can start connecting them. To do this, use 2cm nails, glue, and a hammer. After assembly, you also need to process everything with sandpaper, getting rid of irregularities and roughness.

Only after that we start painting - this is the simplest thing left for you to do. Prepare the surface, varnish it and let dry. That's it, you became the owner of a wooden tray with your own hands!

Among the offers of modern furniture stores there are interesting coffee tables with a soft top, if you can call it that. They look interesting in the interior, but they are not practical even once. It is not as easy to wipe off juice or coffee stains on them as on a regular wooden or glass countertop. For all the owners of such a miracle and just those who love breakfast in bed, we suggest making such a tray. It is stylish in appearance and not expensive in terms of cost.

Materials (edit)

Before making a tray with your own hands, make sure you have:

  • boards from a pallet or box;
  • hardwood boards;
  • white paints;
  • polyurethane-based varnish;
  • masking tape;
  • saws;
  • sandpaper;
  • brushes;
  • chisels;
  • clamps;
  • wood glue;
  • roulette;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • drills;
  • screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • pencil.

Step 1... Decide on the dimensions of the tray and, based on this, cut to length the boards you have from the box or pallet. In this case, I wanted the boards to look like a single whole after gluing, without joints, seams and other irregularities. For this, the boards had to be matched to each other and in thickness.

Step 2... With the help of clamps and wood glue, all the boards should be glued together, carefully pressing them together so that none of them are knocked out of the row. After the workpiece has dried, all excess glue should be removed and the surfaces should be carefully sanded.

Step 3... Planks of light wood will need to make the sides of the tray. In this case, the poplar was taken.

When cutting wood, consider the base perimeter and the tray height you want.

Be sure to mark the handle cutouts in the side edges. Take into account the height at which the base will be mounted so that the slots do not go into the bottom part.

Step 4... After cutting out the holes, sand them thoroughly. They should be perfectly smooth.

Step 5... Using wood glue and clamps, glue the sides to the base.

Step 6... You can use self-tapping screws as additional fasteners.

Step 7... After the glue dries, remove excess glue. Seal the holes formed by the fasteners with wood putty. After letting it dry, smooth the surface with sandpaper or a sander.

Step 8... Cover the bottom of the tray with masking tape. Apply two coats of paint to the sides. After it dries, remove the tape and leave everything until the surface is completely dry.
