Continuing the topic in any conditions.

Many of us paid attention to the used wooden pallets (pallets) piled up near the hardware store, or even discarded as unnecessary. Bricks are stored and transported on these wooden structures, building blocks, carry oversized cargo. But not everyone knows that pallets are great for making original furniture. A pallet sofa is one example.

The frame of any piece of furniture, be it a sofa, an armchair, a table or a wardrobe, consists of panels, solid or prefabricated. So why not use ready-made "parts furniture designer"? It is convenient to saw pallets into pieces and fasten them, treat them with wood compounds, paint, cover with fabric and combine with other materials, for example, metal.

Furniture made of pallets will help out those who cannot afford an expensive furniture set, but do not want to buy it at a thrift store; students who rent an apartment; owners of a country house or summer house. However, furnishings of this kind are created not only for the sake of economy. In recent years, they have been very popular with eco-designers who create expensive brand collections from real pallets or their imitation from artificially aged boards. Therefore, by making a sofa from pallets with your own hands, you can not only save money, but also give your home a unique, stylish atmosphere.

Inexpensive, lightweight, comfortable ...

A small sofa made of pallets looks great in the hallway, in the rest area in the kitchen, on the terrace or balcony, and the sofa standard size can be put in the living room. Compared to a conventional bulky sofa, it has many advantages:

  • it is easy to wash it, it is easy to change the "upholstery" on it: the pillows are fixed to the frame with the help of strings passed between the boards;
  • it is lightweight and easy to disassemble. It can be moved around the apartment - taken from the kitchen to the terrace when guests come, from the house to the veranda or to the garden, if on a warm night you decide to sleep on fresh air... A pallet sofa is slightly heavier than a plastic one, but much stronger and looks more stylish;
  • a sofa made of pallets, even taking into account the cost of accessories and pillows, will cost much less than the most economical analogue in a furniture store.

The peculiarity of pallet furniture is that even without special "constructive additions" both the sofa and the table in the armchair can additionally serve as a cabinet for household utensils and small things. Sand the pallets well before cutting them into pieces and cover the crossbars with sheets of plywood - and you get comfortable shelves. You can store photo albums, magazines under the sofa in the living room, shoe creams and umbrellas in the hallway sofa, and mosquito repellent, wet wipes and similar trifles in the garden couch.

Where to get pallets and what they are

An empty pallet weighs on average about 15-20 kg, and its dimensions, depending on the purpose, can be:

  • 120 x 100 x 12 cm (standard);
  • 120 x 80 x 12 cm ("euro").

You can buy new or used pallets cheaply on thematic construction portals. Sometimes the price of packaging is included in the price of delivery of goods from the manufacturer, and the buyer is ready to donate unnecessary wooden platforms that have been in his warehouse for years. However, even new pallets at the hardware store are inexpensive.

If you are thinking of assembling a sofa from pallets with your own hands, but you do not have the opportunity to purchase ready-made "designer parts", you can make them yourself from 15-20 mm boards with a cross section of 60-70 mm. However, pallets are better suited for furniture. industrial production... They are made from solid and durable wood: a standard pallet must support at least a ton! This is how they make do-it-yourself pallet sofas, photo:

Master Class

So, a short master class for those who decided to make a sofa out of pallets with their own hands. Let's take a look at the main stages of work step by step.

Material preparation

The first thing to do before starting work is to carefully examine the blanks, even if they were bought in a store: are there any cracks in the boards, are there any rusty nails sticking out of them. If you are going to assemble non-standard furniture, it is better to disassemble the platforms, sort the boards by condition, thickness and length, and assemble fragments of the size you need from them.

Here are some things to think about:

  • Used pallets must be cleaned with a brush and thoroughly washed outside with a garden hose (in extreme cases, this can also be done in the bathroom at home by placing a mesh from large debris in the drain). "Wet cleaning" will not harm them: they have repeatedly gotten wet in the rain, exposed to frost, direct sunlight and chemicals.
  • Both new and used pallets must be sanded by removing burrs and roughness from the boards. Use sandpaper (first coarse, then finer), a drill brush or a special sander. Depending on the style of the future sofa, they grind all the details or only those parts of them that will come into contact with the body: the upper part of the sofa, handrails, shelves.
  • If you are going to make a garden sofa or stir it on the balcony, it must be treated with a moisture-repellent primer. After that, it can be opened with varnish or painted.

Cleaning, grinding and chemical processing of workpieces and finished products are carried out outdoors, on a balcony or in a well-ventilated area. Do not forget to wear a protective mask so as not to breathe in dust, do not inhale reagents and the smallest particles of wood.

Instruments

You will need a standard set of woodworking tools: a saw or a grinder for cutting thick boards; hacksaw; jigsaw; drill; hammer; sandpaper (drill attachment, Sander); screwdriver and / or screwdriver. You will also need:

  • corners, screws and nails;
  • varnish or paint; moisture-repellent primer for garden and country furniture; brushes, rollers;
  • furniture stapler and upholstery material if you will be covering the sofa with fabric; thick foam rubber or filling (polyester, synthetic winterizer) and dense fabric for making pillows or a mattress.

Prepare plywood sheets and fittings - sofa legs, drawer handles. If you do not have time or desire (step-by-step instructions - follow the link), they can be ordered from a furniture manufacturing company or "give a second life" to the pillows from the old sofa by making new durable covers for them.

First attempt: one pallet sofa

Before making a full-fledged sofa out of pallets, you should watch the video and practice on a small piece of furniture. To make a sofa in the hallway, one pallet of a standard size is enough for you. In addition, prepare four thick bars for the legs and a sheet of plywood for the back (it is not very convenient to lean your back on the bars) and handrails. If you have two pallets, one of them can be used “for spare parts”. Pallet sofa, photo:

Here's what to do:

  • Saw the pallet lengthwise into two parts: the large one, of the four bars, becomes the seat, and the smaller, of the three bars, becomes the back.
  • Use screws and metal corners to attach the legs to the side surfaces of the part that will be the seat. For the structure to be stable, they must be wide and not very high.
  • Using wooden corners, attach the other half of the pallet at the desired angle, as shown in the photo.
  • Primer, varnish or paint the sofa. Separately process a sheet of plywood for the backrest and secure it to the rungs with loops.

Advice! The hallway is best suited sofa cushions denim or other heavyweight fabric that is easy to clean.

For a sofa on the balcony, sew leatherette pillows: they are not afraid of accidental rain if you do not have time to bring them into the room in bad weather.

Standard sofas

A standard-sized sofa is made from six pallets, but you need to purchase at least eight wooden platforms. One will be in stock in case any pallet breaks during processing, and the second you will disassemble into planks and use them to fasten the fragments together. The algorithm of work in the manufacture of all types of sofa is exactly the same: the manufacture of parts (base, back, attachment of legs), their processing and assembly.

Preparation of parts

  • Base. Lay two wooden platforms face down on the floor, secure with corners and planks, repeat with a second pair of pallets.
  • Saw the fifth pallet crosswise into two equal parts: this will be the back.
  • If necessary, treat the fragments of future furniture with a moisture-repellent compound and a primer for wood (to even out irregularities and cover cracks). When it is dry, open the trays with varnish or paint according to the instructions.
  • Attach castors, legs, or wooden blocks to one of the pairs of pallets.

Assembly

If you are not confident in yourself, use a photo or video on how to make sofas from pallets with your own hands - following the wizard's advice step by step:

  • fasten two pairs of pallets together - with self-tapping screws and with the help of special fasteners (to increase strength, treat the joints with wood glue);
  • attach the back, build the armrests;
  • Line the sofa surface with breathable agrofibre material to keep dust out of the seats. Place soft pillows or a mattress on top of the base of the sofa and your new furniture is ready.

Additional elements

Drawers with handles can be made from the remaining boards (from dimensions 35 x 38 x 10 cm). which will slide out of the space between the base pallets. To make them glide better, attach plywood sheets to the crossbeams.

On a note! Six Euro pallets 120 x 80 centimeters can be assembled corner sofa.

You can use standard pallets, but then the furniture will be more bulky. Pallets are placed one on top of the other in three pieces and fastened together, and then - together. For fastening the halves of the sofa at an angle, in addition to metal fasteners at the joints, use polyurethane foam... The back is made from boards or a spare wooden platform.

A beautiful outdoor sofa made of wooden pallets - an option garden furniture

If you want to be able not only to sit on the sofa, but also to sleep, build a sofa bed with a box for a standard mattress. Saw out the middle support in the pallets, fix the cut out part between the sides - you get a structure with sides, its perimeter corresponds to the perimeter of the bottom of the sofa. The height of the vertical corner posts depends on the thickness of the future mattress. The finished box is installed on two pallets connected to each other, and fixed with self-tapping screws.

Lounge sofa and step sofa

Eco-design furniture is not cheap, but after gaining some experience, you can independently create the most exquisite items from the "wooden constructor". Eco-style sofas can be supplemented in almost any interior: a low sofa on the basis of one row of pallets will remind you of the atmosphere of an Asian home, a corner sofa made of dark or light wood is appropriate in a country-style kitchen, and a simple, strong bench with bright pillows will add special coziness balcony in a high-rise building. Well, when you have mastered the craft to such an extent that you yourself are ready to give a master class to beginners, you can proceed to more complex options.

Try making a multifunctional lounge sofa and an unusual stepped terrace sofa:

  • Lounge sofa. Pallets can be used to build a spacious and comfortable resting place. The wide back of such a sofa will fit table lamp, book, tablet, mobile phone. The armrests should also be wide. Attach small trays and scaffolds to them, on which you will put a cup of coffee or a teal with sandwiches. It is convenient to store books, magazines on the shelves between pallets, and put gargets on recharging.
  • Sofa terrace. It resembles a staircase with two or three wide steps: at the base of the upper tier there are three rows of pallets, at the base of the second - two, and the lowest is fixed on one row. Instead of "placing" a different number of platforms under each level, the tiers can be fixed on thick legs of different heights and play on the fact that standard and Euro pallets have different sizes. Assemble the upper tier from pallets oriented in width (120 x 100 cm), the second from the same pallets with the narrow side turned towards them (100 x 120 cm), and the third from Euro pallets turned by the narrow side (120 x 80 cm).

Know! Such a sofa cannot be called folding because its parts are not fastened together. Folding is, after all, a slightly different option.

But if you choose the desired height of the legs, the second level can be easily pushed under the first, and the third - under the second, and the structure will take up less space.

Unleash your imagination!

Depending on the purpose and style of the piece of furniture, you can beat the natural texture of the tree, paint the frame in bright color or contrasting shades. Colorless or tinted transparent varnish will help to preserve and emphasize the texture of the material. Pallets can only be painted acrylic paints, water-based for wood are not suitable.

The frame should be in harmony with soft details in texture and color:

  • if it is made in the style of rural minimalism (deliberate illusion of untreated wood), sew or order pillows for it made of fabric reminiscent of burlap, rough canvas or plaid "plaid";
  • contrasting (white to black and vice versa) or bright, multi-colored and variegated patterned pillows are suitable for a solid white or black base;
  • for a summer residence, it is better to choose dark seats;
  • if the frame is painted in blue, red, green and other bright colors, the color of the accessories should be black, white or neutral warm shades.

Nowadays, people increasingly appreciate practicality and economy, especially when it comes to arranging their home and summer cottages. Because of this, do-it-yourself furniture made of wooden building pallets (pallets) is gaining more and more popularity. Such building material gives almost unlimited freedom for creativity and implementation of ideas. Almost everything is collected from pallets - from highchairs for children to the pool. It is easy to find the necessary master classes in the Internet space to try your hand or get inspired to create your own creation. Anyone who is familiar with carpentry can assemble such a "constructor". And you can decorate the finished product as you wish. Here you are limited only by imagination and financial possibilities.

Pallets are relevant not only in the loft style

The reasons for the popularity of pallet furniture are due to the following factors:

  • Availability building material ... Exists a large number of advertisements for the sale of used pallets, their price is not more than 30 rubles. a piece. It is also possible to pick up pallets from the construction site free of charge, having previously agreed with the seller. Also, you can order new pallets from the supplier directly, the price of a new pallet is about 200 rubles. Agree, the prices are low, especially when you consider that you can easily make a full-fledged bench or many shelves from one pallet.
  • Ease of assembly... Even a novice carpenter who knows how to work with sandpaper, a saw and a hammer can handle the assembly of furniture from pallets.
  • Practicality. Pallet furniture is very functional and does not require much maintenance, and it is also very durable. All the efforts spent on its creation will more than pay off in a week.
  • Style. Pallet furniture perfectly complements various interior styles. It fits perfectly into the interior of the apartment, created in the loft style. And the pallet structures painted in pastel colors will perfectly complement the interior in the Provence style. Connoisseurs of Japanese minimalism will appreciate the pros low beds assembled from building pallets.
  • Environmental friendliness. Construction pallets are assembled from natural wood.

Drawings of a regular pallet and Euro pallet

What are construction wooden pallets? These are nothing more than ordinary stands for building materials that are transported to the construction site. The pallets are originally designed to be in the form of a rigid support.

Use of the pallet for its intended purpose: stand for construction materials

Since loads in construction have a significant weight, the wood used for pallets has a very high strength, which makes it durable. One pallet is assembled with such a safety margin to withstand a load of up to 1,000 kg.

Dimensions:

The average weight of one construction pallet is about 15–20 kg.

Pallets are collected mainly from conifers (pine, larch, juniper, yew)... These breeds are highly durable, good for carpentry work. And larch also has natural moisture resistance, that is, it does not deteriorate from exposure to moisture. Small parts of the pallet are made of dense juniper. Sample pallets are assembled on fully automated equipment.

On Russian market you can purchase pallets of domestic and foreign production. There are special standards for the manufacture of domestic and European pallets. The requirements for the quality of wood and assembly are higher for European pallets. Using a euro pallet, you have a guarantee that the wood from which it was collected has undergone phytosanitary treatment, that is, disinfection. Disinfection is carried out in order to cleanse the wood from all kinds of bacteria and pests.

Experienced craftsmen advise using only euro pallets in the collection of furniture, since they do not require too diligent grinding and are safer in terms of protruding nails.

If the wood on the pallet has a bluish tint, this indicates that it was collected from raw boards, which means it is of poor quality. It is better not to use such a pallet when assembling furniture.

How and how to handle pallets

If you are going to use building pallets to assemble furniture, then a prerequisite will be their Preliminary processing before starting work and applying a protective coating at the final stage.

In total, there are five main stages in the processing of building pallets in the process of making furniture from them.

  1. First of all, the pallets must be cleaned of dirt. This applies to used pallets.
  2. In order to avoid splinters and snags when using the finished structure in the future, the pallet boards must be sanded. It is not necessary to sand all surfaces; it is enough to walk over the places that will be in contact with your body and clothing. This process can be carried out manually if the scope of work is not too large, using sandpaper. Or you can use grinding equipment or a special drill attachment. Work in a ventilated area with a special protective construction mask.
  3. In order for the wood of the pallet to acquire water-repellent properties and the paint is spent more economically, the surface must be primed on the finished product. If your design will be used exclusively at home, an oil primer is enough for you. When using future furniture on the street, it is better to use acrylic primer, which has good water-repellent characteristics.
  4. If desired, pallet furniture can be painted.
  5. The final stage will be the application of varnish.

Practical recommendations on how to make pallet furniture with your own hands

You have seen that a lot can be made from wooden pallets. We advise you to start with small structures requiring 2-3 packing grids. When you get your hands on, you can start more serious projects: gazebos, chicken coops, cinemas and so on. We bring to your attention information on preparatory work and step by step instructions for making a few simple pieces of furniture.

Tools for work

To work with pallets, you will need carpentry tools and wood fasteners. Check if everything from the presented list is in your arsenal:

  • electric drill, screwdriver, nail puller, hammer, saw;
  • self-tapping screws for wood or nails, bolts for collapsible structures;
  • sandpaper, PVA wood glue, primer for wood, paint, stain or varnish.

If all of this is in place, you are ready to go.

How to choose the right pallets

Pallets, of course, must be intact, without damage and cracks, rotten boards. But these are not all requirements. Pay attention to the pallet markings. If there is an IPPC mark, it means that the wood of the pallet was processed in compliance with international safety requirements.

This is a safe method for humans. Do not use pallets with MB or EUR marks for making home structures. Such wood was processed for safety with chemicals hazardous to health.

Advice! Ask what was transported on pallets. If it was fertilizer or other chemicals, refuse such an acquisition.

Inspect the material for mold, rot, and other damage before purchasing. Pay attention to the nails in the pallet. If you plan to take it apart, it is important that the nails are driven straight, not at an angle.

Pallet handling

It doesn't matter what you decide to make from the pallet, you need to prepare it carefully. Initially, the packaging is made of unplaned board, there are a lot of burrs on it. Therefore, after cleaning from dirt, the wood must be carefully sanded. If you have one, the task will be much easier.

Important! When sanding wood, do not forget about your own safety: use gloves and a respirator.

If you will disassemble the pallet into boards, sort the parts by width, this will simplify their selection in the future. Even before assembly, you can treat the tree with a moisture-proof compound or even paint it, because the finished structure will be more difficult to paint.
