How to get rid of dandelions on your lawn forever?

No matter how diligently you care for your lawn, you still cannot protect it from the appearance of dandelions, because weed seeds are carried by the wind and grow wherever they land. But there are several ways to get rid of already grown stubborn plants once and for all. To your attention the most effective methods and a video of their application on the site.

There are three surefire ways to get rid of weeds mechanically:

  • Manual digging. If you have a couple of hours of time left, you can use the simplest but most effective method - digging up dandelions with roots. For work, you need a special spatula with an oblong narrow handle - a regular tool will not work here, because the root of the plant goes deep into the soil, and you simply cut it with an ordinary handle. To make digging easier, water the lawn first.

Important! By cutting, rather than completely digging out the root of the dandelion, you are not removing the weed, but helping it to multiply.

  • Burning out. Not a very safe method, requiring maximum care, but effective. To remove weeds, you need a burner: consistently point the device at the dandelions and burn them out. Please note that there is a risk of damaging the rest of the lawn vegetation.
  • Blocking out the light. Dandelions need a large number sun rays, so if you cover them with dark cardboard for several days and completely deprive them of light, they will die.

Home remedies for dandelion control

If mechanical methods are not to your liking, consider the less drastic homemade methods:

  • Vinegar - spray on leaves and stems. You can also pull the weeds out of the ground a little and cover the holes with vinegar to damage the roots.
  • Boiling water - Water the weeds with boiling water 3-4 times a day until they die.
  • Salt - Trim the dandelions to the root and cover with a thick layer of regular table salt. One weed should have at least one tablespoon of salt.

Remove Dandelions Before They Seed
  • Hydrochloric acid- Using a kitchen syringe, apply the concentrated product along the entire length of the dandelion. Within 5-10 minutes, they should turn brown - this indicates the beginning of the process of plant death.

Advice. Among the chemicals, the herbicide is considered the most effective in the fight against dandelions, but it can only be used pointwise, applied directly to the leaves of the weeds, so as not to destroy lawn grass.

So, we have many different ways to get rid of dandelions on the lawn once and for all. All of them are tested in practice and effective, but remember that you need to fight the weeds before they are covered with fluff, so that the seeds do not scatter around the site and nullify all your efforts.

How to get rid of a dandelion on the lawn: video

A huge number of gardeners are proud of their lawn. It is not so easy to maintain it in perfect condition by timely cutting of fast-growing grass, ruthlessly destroying weeds and masking the resulting bald spots by sowing lawn grass in the appropriate areas. A plant such as a dandelion can be especially annoying to the owner of the lawn: if its seeds were brought onto the lawn once, then it will not be so easy to get rid of it.

How to deal with dandelions: a mechanical way to get rid of weeds on your lawn

It may seem to a person who has never encountered this misfortune that there is no problem: it is enough to mow the grass on the lawn in a timely manner, and then the sunny yellow dandelions will not be discordant with the main green background. Unfortunately, this weed grows very quickly, and you can skip the moment when the dandelion flowers turn into fluffy white hemispheres, the seeds from which, at the first breath of the breeze, will spread throughout your area.

You can get rid of dandelions on your lawn by mechanically destroying each of the plants. To do this, it is not enough just to pull the weed out of the ground: the dandelion has a very long - 20-25 cm - and at the same time a fragile root, and if even a small part of it remains in the ground, then the amazing ability of the dandelion to regenerate will very soon turn the remnants of the root into a full-fledged one. adult plant... Thus, each specimen of dandelion on your lawn must first be well dug, and only then removed from the ground. The bald spots remaining in the lawn after this should be sown with the seeds of the lawn grass you usually use.

Getting rid of dandelions on the lawn using chemistry

Many gardeners use the achievements of the modern chemical industry to control weeds in their area. In relation to dandelions, for example, the preparations Roundup and Lontrel-300 are especially effective, but ordinary vinegar, well evaporated to increase the concentration of acetic acid, which is poisonous for this weed plant, is also suitable. It is best to get rid of dandelions on your lawn in early fall.

Do not mow the lawn for a couple of days before chemical treatment; do not do this for about a week after you have treated all the weeds. Apply the preparation of your choice to the dandelions pointwise - it is most convenient to do this with a soft-bristled brush. During the next week after chemical treatment, the substance gradually moves through the plant from its foliage to root system, which causes its complete withering away. After removing the wilted weeds from the soil, re-sow the formed "bald spots" in the lawn with grass.

How to get rid of a dandelion on the lawn: video

A smooth lawn with homogeneous grass is the dream of every lover of beautiful comfort and order, but quite often on personal plot other plants are sown and germinate, thereby spoiling the overall picture. One of these is the dandelion. Dandelion control on garden plot, a summer residence or a lawn - the task is not easy enough, but with the right approach to business, you will definitely achieve a result.

The main thing is to initially decide how exactly you will deal with dandelions on the site, because there are 3 ways to destroy this plant, and we will talk about them in more detail in the article:

How to get rid of dandelions manually: weeding

We will not describe much here, most likely you are familiar with this method. Let's just say that medicinal dandelion has a fairly long root system of 20-30 cm, which is not easy to extract from the ground, since in addition to being long, the root is also very fragile. To properly get rid of dandelions once and for all, you need to dig each dandelion bush with a shovel from four sides, and pull it to the surface along with a pile of earth. Then the earth must be chickened out and returned back, and the dandelion must be thrown into compost heap... Please note that if a root process remains at least 1 cm in the ground, You can wait for this guest on the surface next season, so it is very important to remove the roots entirely.

This method has a rather strong drawback. Especially if there are too many dandelions on the site, you are simply tortured to fight with it, so, among other things, you are unlikely to be pleased with the result in the form of a dug lawn, right? Therefore, the most optimal and harmless, nevertheless, is the following way of struggle.

How to deal with dandelions on the lawn folk remedies

Dandelion control with folk remedies, is quite justified, since you practically will not spoil the natural composition of the soil and, with the right approach, will not harm other plants.

Here gardeners most often use 3 components to choose from:

  • vinegar;
  • salt;
  • boiling water.

Dandelion vinegar in the garden

To get rid of the weed, you need to spray each plant with 9% vinegar or vinegar essence. For better result before spraying, it is better to cut the leaves and stem of the dandelion in such a way that 4-5 cm of the plant is visible above the ground. Then carefully spray the "remainder" of the dandelion with a spray bottle and leave. This procedure is best done in the fall, then the vinegar will penetrate the root system of the dandelions along with the nutrients, and the plant will die.

Fighting Dandelions with Table Salt

The easiest way is to put 1 tablespoon of salt in the center of the plant. Or, again, make a cut of the bush. true in this case, under the root and pour salt on it. After a while, the dandelion root will die, which will be visible to the naked eye, since a brown spot forms at the site of sprinkling with salt.

Some gardeners prepare a concentrated saline solution and spill dandelions into it.

Boiling water - as a method of dealing with a field dandelion

As you understand, here everything is also nowhere easier, take boiling water and spill the plant. For optimal effect, you can dissolve salt in water. To get rid of dandelions on the site forever, you need to spill each dandelion bush with 3-4 liters of boiling water.

Well, if these methods did not suit you, one thing remains - the use of herbicides!

Dandelion herbicides on the lawn

Perhaps the easiest way to control any weeds is herbicides, but at the same time they are by no means harmless. Therefore, it is better to use them in the most extreme cases.

Important!

When using any chemical product, you must:

  • Strict adherence to all manufacturer's recommendations regarding the processing of the garden. Be aware that improper use of chemicals can harm the health of the gardener and his entire family, as well as pets, plants and the environment.
  • In the case of using the herbicide in the garden, and not on the lawn, apply the drug to the soil only after complete harvesting. Experienced summer residents process the site no earlier than the second half of September - early October.
  • The preparations should be applied to the soil only in dry, calm weather. After processing, animals should not be allowed on the site for several days.

Currently, there are herbicides of both general ("Tornado", "Lontrel 300", "Round") and selective ("Sniper", "Lintur", "Killeks") effects.

"Sniper"- a preparation intended for spot removal of dandelions from the site. The chemical is applied directly to its foliage, absorbed by them and penetrates into the root, destroying all parts of the weed, except for the seeds, which, after processing, completely retain their germination, so it is better to use it in the spring.

"Lintur"- a chemical of systemic action. Penetrates through the leaves to the roots. Its effect can be seen after 1-1.5 weeks. You can see the complete destruction of the dandelion within a month. The main advantage of this drug is that it does not affect many crops and can be used for planting. Before treating the lawn, do not mow the tops so that the growing leaves can take in the optimal amount of the substance.

"Killeks"- according to reviews, it takes the third place in the fight against perennial plants.

And finally, I would like to note that the full name of dandelion is medicinal dandelion. Call this plant a weed simply does not turn the tongue, since dandelion is a panacea for many diseases. V folk medicine they use all the parts of the plant - they are simply priceless, in addition, you can make delicious from its leaves, and amazing from dandelion flowers

Therefore, before you fight this miraculous plant with especially aggressive methods - think a hundred times!

Good luck, health and well-groomed, beautiful lawns!

From year to year, in spring, land plots are decorated with beautiful bright flowers yellow color- dandelions. They like to weave wreaths of them and add them to various flower arrangements. But gardeners are waiting for this time with horror in their eyes, because in fact a dandelion is a weed whose long powerful root (25 cm) penetrates deep into the soil.

It is quite difficult to clear the lawn in the garden from dandelions due to the fragility of the root. It is impossible to protect yourself from such a misfortune, since the seeds of a field plant can come from anywhere (from a neighbor's site, field, roadside).

The dandelion grows quickly and imperceptibly, distorting the patterns on the lawn. Regular mowing will only cut the flower heads, but the stem will still differ from the lawn structure.

You can get rid of a dandelion different ways : dig up, burn with acid or use pesticides. Let's consider each of them.

1. If, waking up in the morning, you saw up to ten dandelions, wasting no time, take and go dig them up. Before that, water the soil around the flower well and try to dig out the whole root, because from the rest of the root, over time, a new plant will grow again.

2. You can get rid of the dandelion by burning the plants from the inside. Take vinegar (5%), pour it into the middle of the inflorescence, and after a day dig out the already "dead" plant. This procedure must be done in dry weather, so that acetic acid with moisture does not spread to other plants, this will lead to their death too. Vinegar can be replaced with boiling water. But in this case, you will have to burn the dandelion several times until the entire root dies. Any other weed can survive with boiling water, of course, if these are isolated cases (also a frequent occurrence).

Pour vinegar or boiling water over the dandelion digging site, so to speak, just in case.

3. From chemicals used against dandelions "Roundup" ("killer" of all green) and "Lontrel". Proceed exactly as instructed, applying the herbicide with a brush in the middle of the flower. The next day, beautiful, but harmful weeds will burn and you only need to dig them up. Be careful not to get chemicals on skin or other plants. Wear gloves. After treatment, the lawn grass is not mowed for a week. After digging the dandelions, they do not clean the lawn with a rake for 2 days, since these days the drug still retains its activity and can burn ornamental plants forming bald spots. Keep pets away from the treated area at the same time. The procedure may have to be repeated.

If a chemical was used in the fight against dandelions and bald lawns still turned out, then a week after treatment they can be sown with new grass.

The above methods of dealing with dandelion are effective and act very quickly. However, there are others along with them. For example, constantly cut off the points of obtaining food (leaves and stems) from dandelions. Over time, the root will die from starvation. Another option is to cover the dandelions with an opaque material; the weed will gradually die from a lack of light.

Dandelion seeds easily colonize loose lands, therefore, it is undesirable to create new lawns during their flowering period. Do this in a quieter time - July-August.

Getting rid of dandelions in a humane way, you can benefit. Uprooted weeds can be added to salads, delicious jam and honey, dandelion wine or grinded tincture. Take from nature everything that it gives you!
