How to remove dust from down pillows. How to properly clean or wash your feather, down and cushions at home? Can feather pillows be washed

Dirty pillows pose a threat to human health, so they should be washed or cleaned at least once every three years. In this case, the naperniki are also subject to change.

In case of demodicosis, it is better to change down and feather pillows for products on a padding polyester, because the tick does not settle in an artificial filler so willingly, and they are easier to wash.

The easiest and most effective way to clean feather, down and cushions in all respects is to do it dry cleaning or dry air cleaning. There they are treated with steam, so the pillows do not lose their lightness and fluffiness.

It is possible to clean the pillows at home, although this is a laborious process. Drying of the filler will be the main problem. Most often, feathers and down of various birds are present in the composition of pillows in different proportions.

Important! On the tag you need to see which feathers of which birds were used as a pillow filler. If there is a feather and down of ducks or geese inside, then clean the pillows in washing machine or by hand, if a chicken feather - any washing is contraindicated!

A pillow filled with chicken down or feathers is cleaned only by dry drying using ultraviolet light, not steam.

How to wash feather pillows?

To prevent the feather in the pillows from collecting a lot of dust and mites, the products must be periodically cleaned. There are two easy ways how to clean feather pillow at home: wash by hand and using a washing machine.

Hand wash feather pillows

Before washing a feather pillow at home with your hands, you need to take:

  • Gauze (5-7 meters);
  • Detergent for woolen fabrics;
  • Warm water in large quantities;
  • Linen air conditioner;
  • New naperniki, which are either sewn independently or bought in the store (factory teak).

Before washing the feather pillow, fold the gauze in several layers and sew 3 bags. Rip open the pillow, open the pillow and take out the feather from it. Divided into three even parts, place the feather in gauze bags and sew them up (you can tie them with a thread).

We wash these bags in a large deep basin with warm water, in which a liquid soap was added before, for example Dreft, Vinsinka or Ushasty nanny for woolen and delicate products.

First, it is better to soak the feather and leave for a while (30 minutes) to remove dust and odors.

Rinse thoroughly after washing. When rinsing in the last portion of water, add a bottle of conditioner. Squeeze the contents of the gauze bags well.

In a warm period, it is better to dry a feather outdoors or on a balcony, in a cold period - at home, near a radiator. From time to time, the feather is whipped in bags, turning it over in different directions.

After the feathers are dry, the pillow can be altered..

It is better to carry out the procedure for filling in a new bed-case with a feather by spreading a sheet and placing a washed feather on it. When carrying out such actions, you need to be prepared for the fact that a certain loss of feathers will be.

Also, after the feather pillows have been altered, it is necessary to clean using a vacuum cleaner. Having transferred the feathers to a new pillowcase, the latter is sewn up and put on a clean pillowcase.

Machine wash on feather pillows

Washing feather pillows by hand is difficult and time-consuming, so you can use a washing machine.

If you decide to resort to machine washing, bags are also made of gauze, in which the feather is placed. After that, the bags are evenly placed in the washing machine and washed at the “delicate wash” mode and the set temperature of 40 degrees.

In the compartment where the powder is usually poured, you need to pour a liquid detergent for washing woolen fabrics (the same Dreft or Vinsinka, as well as all powders specialized for wool).

Before washing the pillow in the washing machine, the spin speed must be set to minimum, the rinse mode is double.

Add fabric softener before the second rinse.

Important! Feathers released from gauze bags can easily clog, therefore this way wash pen should be used very carefully.
You don't need to wash all the feathers if the pillow is very large. Before washing the feather pillow at home, the feather needs to be split into several portions - 2-3 bags. Then the feather will be better cleaned, and the load on the drum will be evenly distributed.

How do I clean my down pillow?

Down pillows are cleaned in three ways:

1. Washing by hand

If you need to know how to wash a down pillow, the algorithm of actions will be as follows:

  1. Into a large container with hot water, in which a soap solution is diluted, place the fluff for 2-3 hours and let it soak.
  2. Drain dirty water, squeeze out the filler and rinse under running water. It is convenient to use a colander when rinsing. The drain hole must be closed with a mesh, otherwise the sewer can be clogged.
  3. Dip the fluff into another solution with detergent(You can take all the detergents for down, for example, Heitmann Daunenwäsche special detergent for down clothes or Unipuh liquid detergent for down clothes) and wrinkle the almost clean padding well in it.
  4. Rinse again and lay out on a soft cloth to dry in the sun. You need to distribute the filler evenly. In the course of drying, be sure to turn over and break the downy lumps. The fluff dries slowly. The process can take up to 5 days. The fluff is laid out evenly in the napernik.

2. Machine wash

Washing in a machine is contraindicated for most down pillows. Information about this can be placed on the label.

If you nevertheless took the risk of washing the down pillow, then in this case the pillow case will definitely have to be changed. You need to wash at a temperature of 30-40 degrees, the mode is manual or for fluff, with a minimum spin during spinning.

A dirty pillow along with 2-3 plastic balls (they will fluff up the product) is placed in a washing bag.

When the cycle is over and the pillow is dry, the pillow case is steamed and the dry fluff is transferred to a new one.

3. Steam treatment

If the steaming method is selected, a new pillowcase is not needed. This procedure removes dirt worse than washing, but it is quite capable of freshening the pillow, removing odors, renewing the pillowcase, and destroying up to 90% of bacteria and mites.

To steam the pillow, you need to place it vertically and walk twice over its entire surface.

How to clean your decorative sofa cushion?

Now let's figure out how to clean sofa pillows filled with padding polyester or holofiber.

Wash in that each product has a separate filler and a decorative pillowcase.

Important! Before cleaning the sofa cushion, it is necessary to check whether it is suitable for further use. To do this, you need to put something heavy on the pillow, and then remove - the surface should take on its original shape. If a dent is found, such a pillow will no longer work, it is better to buy a new one.

Washing sofa cushions

Decided to wash yourself? Then we'll figure out how to clean the pillows with our own hands, while maintaining a presentable look.

You need to wash sofa cushions in 2 steps:

  • Filler in the washing machine. To do this, the pillow is soaked in warm water with the addition of a gel (for example, liquid gel SNOW GUARD, Persil, Ariel, Formil and others).

It is better to put two pillows in the washer so that they rub against each other, and the load on the drum is even.

Washing is carried out in the "Synthetics" mode with a temperature not exceeding 50 degrees. The pillows are placed in a mesh cover and liquid is poured into the powder compartment.

Important! If there is heavy dirt, it is better to use a stain remover. Bleach is not worth using.

Rinse twice.

Dry the sofa cushions need in the sun or in a room that is ventilated. Before this, the pillow should dry out horizontally for 3-4 hours, so that the water glass. Periodically, the product needs to be turned over and whipped.

If the filler has strayed into lumps, then knead it and distribute it over the pillowcase. Didn't it work out? Then the fabric of the pillowcases is ripped apart at the seam, fiddling with a synthetic winterizer or combed out, and then returned back and sewn up again.

  • Decorative pillowcase.

If there is embroidery, the product is silk or leather, it should be dry-cleaned.

If washed at home, then use a soft powder (Vinsinka, Formil, Pervol, Galus or any other) diluted in warm water.

The pillowcase is soaked for 2-3 hours and washed in an automatic machine with a delicate cycle.

After washing, the cover is dried. If there is a label, then the manufacturer's directions must be followed.

Steam cushions cleaning

If the cushion is not heavily soiled, you can steam it.

Here are the steps for such a cleaning:

  1. Knocking out dust with an ordinary beater;
  2. Treatment of the entire area with a vacuum cleaner;
  3. Use a steam iron to iron the pillow to kill germs, bacteria and mites. By the way, read our article.
  4. Repeat vacuum cleaning.

To prevent excess moisture from lingering in the sofa cushions, they must be dried more often or ventilated on fresh air in sunny warm weather.

Experts advise cleaning the pillows at least once a year, and it is better to do this every four to five months. The bottom line is that keratinized skin particles, hair, dirt and bacteria collect in the pillows. All this leads to the development of dust mites and microbes in the products. To prevent this, pillows need to be cleaned regularly.

If the pillow is not cleaned correctly, it can lose its pristine shape. Therefore, you should provide safe and high-quality care, depending on the filler material:

  1. Down and feathers are the most popular pillow fillings. Down is one of the varieties of feathers, therefore it is necessary to wash both things in the same way. You can do this with your own hands, using steaming, or in an automatic washing machine.
  2. Nowadays, bamboo bedding is becoming more and more popular. They are very comfortable and safe, do not cause an allergic reaction and are characterized by high aesthetics. In addition, these things are very easy to care for. The bamboo product should be washed entirely by hand or in a washing machine. In this case, the water should have a temperature of no more than forty degrees. You can use a shampoo, gel, or other liquid fabric product. But it is not recommended to use chlorine-containing and powder mixtures. It is forbidden to wring out pillows with such filler.
  3. Products made of holofiber, latex and synthetic winterizer must be washed with special means designed for synthetics. To do this, start the delicate mode and select a temperature of up to forty degrees Celsius. After the procedure, the product must be thoroughly squeezed out, because synthetic fabrics effectively absorb moisture into their structure.

Cleaning down and feather products by hand

To clean the pillow at home, you need to take gauze bags or gauze cloth, conditioner, brand new naperniki and a product intended for washing wool. Then the product is cut and the fluff or feathers are taken out, laying them out in separate bags that will need to be sewn up.

Into the water with temperature indicators from forty to fifty degrees, you need to add a cleaning agent and carefully wash the gauze bags where feathers or fluff have already been placed. Then the products need to be rinsed several times in cold water. Conditioner can be added during the last rinse.

After that, the bags need to be squeezed out and dried for heating radiator or the street. When drying, the filler must be turned over and whipped from time to time.

After the down and feathers are completely dry, you can put them in a brand new pillowcase, which you need to sew up and put on a washed pillowcase. If washing is done by hand, then you do not need to use gauze bags, but put the material in a soapy solution so that individual feathers and fluffs do not stick to each other.

Then the filler should be soaked for a couple of hours, after which the soapy water should be drained with a colander and the filler should be rinsed under running water. Then it must be washed again and rinsed again.

To dry the fluff, it can be neatly laid out on a newspaper sheet and left for several hours. Drying must be sufficient, otherwise mold can form in the pillow.

Washing by hand is a rather laborious and painstaking process. But it can be used to clean the filler material of a pillow or blanket very well. Bacteria, mites and other pests will disappear completely with this washing method, and the hostess will not need to think about how to sew duvet blanked at home.

Washing in an automatic machine

In an automatic machine, pillows with feathers and down are washed in the same way as with manual way. For this purpose, the napert is unpicked, and the filler is placed in gauze bags.

Only in this case the bags are placed in the machine. Washing is carried out using a delicate mode and at a temperature of no more than forty degrees. Spinning should be carried out at a minimum speed.

In this case, you need to use exclusively wool products and add conditioner for rinsing. If you need to wash the product completely, then you need to put it in a special bag and activate the delicate mode with a low temperature and speed.

It should be noted that this washing method can also be used for pillows with holofiber, padding polyester and bamboo. After thoroughly wringing out products with down or feathers, you need to steam and change the napkin. Pillows with other filling materials can be dried completely.

Steaming features

Use of a steam generator or manual steamer- an excellent solution that allows you to clean and smooth the pillow in literally twenty to thirty minutes. This is a great option for those who don't know how to clean a down pillow at home.

These devices can be used for the following materials:

  • complex;
  • thin;
  • delicate.

They perfectly clean fabrics, eliminate viruses and mites from surfaces. In addition, steaming can remove unpleasant odors from old utensils.

For this purpose, the equipment must be filled with clean water. After that, the product must be hung in an upright position. The surface must be treated a couple of times on each side.

Then the product needs to be dried, straightened inside the filler material and put on the washed pillowcase. Steaming helps to secure and clean the pillowcase and filler.

You can also take the product to a dry cleaner, where you can clean feather pillows. There, the product is not only professionally cleaned, but also restoration if necessary. Pillows of old models definitely require replacement of the pillowcase and filler.

Correct and timely care of bedding is a guarantee of the health and safety of all household members, as well as a guarantee of the durability of the pillows. They will always be comfortable and soft.

To reduce dirt on the pillows, you can use two calico pillowcases. Before putting on a new napernik on the product, the material must be washed in advance with laundry soap and dried thoroughly. In this case, the feather base will remain safe and hygienic for a long time.

Attention, only TODAY!

Despite the impressive number of different fillers, feather pillows are still one of the most popular in our country. Often housewives, when changing pillowcases, neglect to clean the filler itself. There are several ways to clean a feather pillow. The easiest way is to take the product to a dry cleaner. But most housewives, fearing the adverse effect of chemicals on the body, prefer to clean down and feather pillows on their own.

Hand wash filler

If your pillow is full of chicken feathers, it is not recommended to wash them at home. But if eider down, swan or duck feather acts as a filler, you can safely clean them at home.

For hand washing of the filler, the pillow is ripped open and its contents removed. This approach allows the hostess to get good result... Feathers are soaked in warm water, after diluting the required amount of detergent in it. It is recommended to use:

  1. Detergent for washing woolen products.
  2. Shampoo.
  3. Pre-prepared mixture of laundry soap and ammonia... This is one of the oldest recipes for a detergent that perfectly cleans the pen even from stubborn dirt, while disinfecting it at the same time. To prepare the composition, 10 liters of warm water, half a bar of pre-grated laundry soap and 2 tbsp. l ammonia.

Carry out hand washing of the pillow filler by the following analogy:

  1. Feathers removed from the cover must be placed in gauze pouches. Thanks to this approach, small feathers will not fly to the sides when they are immersed in water.
  2. Soak the filler in warm water with the addition of the selected detergent for 3-4 hours, occasionally stirring the contents of the basin with your hands.
  3. The cleaned feathers must be rinsed with running water. The most practical way to do this is to use a colander and shower.
  4. If the hostess wants to flavor the cleaned down fill, you can use fabric softener during the rinse phase.

The most crucial moment in hand washing feathers is drying them.... The filler is laid out in a dry, well-ventilated room, always on a flat surface. Cover the top with gauze. Leave to dry completely. This is a long process, lasting 3-7 days. Then they are carefully folded into a new cover.

Sometimes housewives, in order to save money, try to revive the old bed-liner - wash it, mend it. But such savings are not justified. After all, worn-out fabric will not last long - it will still break at the most inopportune moment. It is believed that the pillow should be changed once every 5 years.

Machine washable

To clean a feather pillow at home, you don't need to rip open the pillowcase. More and more popular among modern housewives is the machine wash of headwear with feather filling. The pillow is washed in a special additional cover without first ripping open the pillow. This is an additional safety measure that prevents the product from breaking and getting a feather between the working parts of the machine.

Machine (automatic) wash is used if the down is not very dirty. Using this method of cleaning pillows at home, you should follow these recommendations:

  1. Load 2 pillows into the drum at the same time. This is to balance the wash cycle. If two products are too much for the washing machine (overload), you can replace one of them with a thick towel.
  2. It is recommended to use shampoo, liquid soap, gel-like special compositions for washing woolen clothes as a detergent during washing.
  3. To improve the washing performance of feather pillows, we recommend placing 2 tennis balls or heavy rolls of kitchen foil in the drum. This approach not only provides better cleaning of the filler, but also prevents the feathers from churning into lumps.
  4. The new models of automatic washing machines have a special program for washing down items. If there is no such regime, nothing terrible has happened. It is worth choosing "delicate wash" from the menu (water temperature is 30-40 degrees, but no more).
  5. Also, do not put the machine on intensive twisting of the product. After all, such a mode increases the likelihood of the cover breaking and the filler getting into the working parts of the equipment. In addition, high twisting speeds negatively affect the state of the feather itself - in the process of twisting, the feathers break badly, eventually turning into real garbage.
  6. It is recommended to carry out several rinsing sessions of the washed pillow - feathers in the bag or case are very difficult to completely clean from the remaining detergent the first time.
  7. If the product does not turn out well after washing, it must be left in the drum of the washing machine for a while to allow excess liquid to drain.

Machine washable feather pillows have several undeniable advantages before manual cleaning. First of all, it is efficiency. Duration of machine wash of the product - 30-40 minutes. And with manual cleaning, the feathers should be soaked for at least 4 hours. Also, after washing in an automatic machine, the products dry much faster.

But you cannot dry pillows on a central heating battery. Doing so can cause oils to be released from the feather, which is a source of bad odor even after washing.

Dry cleaning feather pad

Washing down feather pillows is troublesome and time-consuming. Therefore, most housewives do not wait until the product begins to give out an unpleasant odor of dampness, mustiness, and the bedclothes are covered with ugly dark spots. They prefer to periodically dry clean their pillows:

  1. All outdoor activities are carried out in warm weather (if it is raining outside, it is not recommended to take the down pillow out of the house so that the filler does not collect excess moisture).
  2. The product is carefully knocked out, removing dust.
  3. The pillow is placed in direct sunlight, which acts as a disinfectant installation, periodically turning the product over.
  4. You can also additionally process the pillow case and its contents with a steamer. Heat steam jet perfectly disinfects fluff, kills germs, dust mites.

If you take proper care of products with down filling, they will last more than one year. To avoid having to clean your pillows often, you should follow these guidelines:

  1. Every 2-3 weeks, the headrest should be taken outside for 3-4 hours, but not in direct sunlight. Such measures will help prevent unpleasant odors.
  2. Feather pillows should not be washed as they become dirty, but at least 4 times a year. This approach will help to avoid the accumulation of dust in the fluff, the reproduction of dust mites and the development of allergic reactions.
  3. To prevent the fluff from clumping and to maintain the original shape of the headrest, knock it down every morning while cleaning the bed.
  4. The hostess must monitor the condition of the bedclothes. The fabric for the covers should be dense, do not allow feathers to come out along the seams and along the canvas. Along with the dense texture, the material should be good for air permeability.

Every modern housewife should be able to care for feather pillows and know how to clean them. After all, this is a great opportunity to postpone a trip to the dry cleaning, saving the family budget. But if there is no time for self-cleaning of the filler, you can always use the services of professionals.

At the moment, you can buy pillows with absolutely any filler. But like our mothers, fathers and grandmothers, the choice often falls on feathers. And in this article we will tell you about all the intricacies of caring for feather pillows. Namely:

  • what methods are there for cleaning these pillows;
  • how to clean feather pillows at home;
  • how to wash them in a washing machine.

Let's get started.

Cleaning methods for pillows

How do I clean my down pillow? Basically we all love feather pillows because of their long lifespan. But there is one important detail - the feather pillow will serve you as long as possible if you clean it once every six months. You can take your item to a dry cleaner, where the professionals will take care of it, and here's how they will do it:

  • To begin with, all feathers from the pillow will be removed and processed in an organic solvent that will remove dirt, dust, mites, germs and various odors. This, of course, is very good, but there is also a downside to the coin - this solvent can easily ruin feathers.
  • After the feathers have been processed, they are dried and ventilated. This can also not affect the feathers very well, because they can dry out and become smaller, which means that your pillow will lose its former softness and size. And this is undoubtedly a disadvantage.

Important! You will also find a lot of useful information in the article, .

There are other ways to wash your pillow:

  • Dry cleaning of fluff products. This is a simple procedure in which the feathers are cleaned of dust, dirt, debris with the help of a strong air flow, while they still fluff.
  • Also using ultraviolet lamp feathers are cleaned of dust mites.

Further, the feathers are simply packaged according to new naperniki, as a result, at the exit we get a very soft and pleasant to the touch product. Cool, isn't it? But for this event we will have to give a good amount of money - we will not say exactly how much, it depends on the place where you do it, everywhere in different ways.

But, if you're on a budget, or just don't want to pay to clean your pillow, here's how to clean your feather pillows at home by yourself.

Cleaning the pillow at home

Yes, if you nevertheless decided to clean the pillow with your own hands, then you have chosen, perhaps, the most the best way care for such an important household item. Yes, of course, you have to work hard enough, but the result is worth it, believe me.

The washing itself is not difficult, the most difficult thing is to dry everything, especially since it must be done as well as possible.

Important! It is worth considering that in the composition of such pillows you can find not only feathers but also down of birds, therefore, cleaning should take place in several stages, between which we will make time intervals.

What kind of feathers are washable?

Initially, you have to find out what kind of feather your old pillow is made of, which needs to be washed or altered altogether. This can be seen on the product label.

Important! Only waterfowl feathers and down can be washed! If it consists of chicken feathers, then you can safely dispose of it.

Do we erase it entirely or retrieve the content?

Many people ask the question - is it possible to wash the pillow completely without removing the contents? It is possible, but there is one “but”: in the process of washing it will become so heavy that it cannot be reached by hand, there is simply not enough strength, and it is forbidden to wash in a typewriter.

No, you can, of course, wash in a typewriter, but this way you will not achieve the desired effect, but only get rid of dirt and dust. And plus, when washing in a typewriter, all the feathers will stick together, crumple into lumps, from which it will simply be impossible to get rid of. Because of this, the pillow will simply go to junk. But our task is to clean the product, not get rid of it, right?

As a result, the answer to this question is that it is better to wash separately. How? Now we will provide you step by step instructions do-it-yourself manual restoration of feather pillows.

Important! Pillows should be washed during the warmer months.

Washing steps:

  1. The first step towards a clean pillow is to create a soapy solution. This solution includes:
    • one bar of "Soviet-style" laundry soap, rubbed on a coarse grater;
    • one teaspoon of ammonia;
    • water.

Important! The solution basin must be large enough.

  1. Further - the most "painful" procedure. We unpick the pillowcase. It doesn't matter that your grandmother sewed it. Just imagine how much dirt there is.
  2. After ripping open the naperl, we take and place the feathers in small portions in the solution we have prepared.

Important! Do not shove everything at once, otherwise your bath will turn into a chicken coop.

  1. Then two to three hours of rest, while the feathers are soaked in water.
  2. After we have gained strength, we take our palms, and simply rub the feathers between them, rinse them. A sieve, colander, or running water can help with rinsing.
  3. We put the washed feathers in small portions in gauze bags.
  4. Tightly closed, or better - sewn gauze bags, are placed in a washing machine and put into spin mode, preferably in a gentle mode. It's over, you can skip all this, and let them just lie there to dry, but it takes a long time, and you run the risk that the feathers may just stink.
  5. Final drying should be done in a well-ventilated area with direct sunlight. In this case, the bags must be regularly shaken and turned over at least three times a day.
  6. Well, the last stage is washing the bedclothes. After the feathers have dried and the pillowcase itself is dry, simply put the feathers back and sew the pillowcase very tightly.

All, congratulations, your pillow is perfectly clean, while not losing its softness and size, and this is very important.

We wash the pillow in the washing machine

If you are frightened by such a laborious process, or you simply do not have much free time, then you can wash the feathers in a typewriter. But for this you need to take into account a couple of very important factors that will protect the washing machine from failure and the pillow from the appearance of lumps:

  • The first is the presence of a special cover, without which everything will simply tear and clog your machine with feathers.
  • The second - gauze bags, in which we will fold feathers in small portions, should be made incredibly strong. This can be done by simply rolling the gauze into four or even five or six layers, and stitching very tightly.
  • After you have washed feathers in gauze bags in an automatic machine, you simply lay them out on a flat surface that is ventilated and on which the sun falls. But at the same time, you will have to very often turn the bags over and make sure that there are no lumps in them, smoothing them.
  • After everything is dry, we fill the bed-case and sew it tightly with thick threads.
