All methods are used in modern restoration work. Each process requires an individual approach.

Option 1: sanding and painting

This is the ideal way to restore veneered surfaces. A correctly selected composition of the coloring matter may not hide, but emphasize the woody pattern on the door. After all the preparatory work, the canvas is evenly painted in the desired color. For deep saturation with color, lay the enamel in 2 - 3 rows... It is difficult to veneer the coating without special equipment, and it is easier than ever to update the pattern and color to emphasize. Staining can also preserve the antique decor of the door.

Before varnishing, you should walk over the surface with a stain to prevent the development of fungi and mold.

Option 2: wallpapering

Repairing a door block with wallpaper is another interesting idea that fully combines all objects and structures in the interior. You can update in this way at least every year during repairs and outside of this event: it is easily performed and the price of the coating comes out very small.

How to update wooden doors with wallpaper:

  • On the prepared canvas it is necessary to apply a primer in 1 layer and wait until it dries completely;
  • The wallpaper is pre-cut to the size of the door. This must be done carefully so that then the cut out contour coincides with the door. Ideally, make a paper overlay with a fold allowance.
  • Now apply glue to the wood and attach a piece of paper. If the wallpaper is non-woven, spread the glue on the roll and glue it to the base... Smooth well and remove excess glue. After drying, attach the hardware and hang the canvas.

Option 3: stencil drawing

Do-it-yourself wooden door restoration can be done using stencils. They are sold ready-made or made on their own on a large sheet of paper or wallpaper.

To apply the finished drawing, follow the instructions:

  1. The prepared base is coated with paint or varnish, wait for drying;
  2. A stencil is glued to a dry surface;
  3. Cover free space inside or outside;
  4. Tear off the template and wait for the paint to dry.

Method 4: vinyl stickers

A modern option for interior decoration. Vinyl stickers are not afraid of moisture and water, the sun, they are easy to wash and clean if necessary. It is very simple to paste over the door with them: apply the sticker and smooth it. The advantage of modern interior stickers is their reusability and versatility. They can be easily removed from the surface without leaving a trace; if desired, the location of the stickers can be changed. Suitable for decorating a plastic balcony door.

Method 5: overhead facades

When it is necessary not to restore, but to completely renew the facade of the door, overhead facades will come to the rescue... They are made from different materials, it is advisable to purchase a cover made of MDF:

The door, restored in this way, radically changes its appearance.

Hardware decor

To breathe life into the fittings, sand the products against possible corrosion, cover them with a layer of primer-enamel. She will not hide the ornament applied to the handles, but only emphasize it favorably. Once dry, the handles and hinges can be attached back to the canvas and hung in the opening.

You can come up with your own method of restoration: covering with acrylic paints, painting, etc. The main thing is to organize correctly preparatory stage to create a working base, and then it will go like clockwork. The main thing is not to be afraid and start.

Any high-quality interior door loses its original appearance over time. As a result, it may require replacement or restoration. The first option will be costly, so it’s best to think over a new design design. So, how to update an interior door with your own hands?

Preparatory work

Buying doors every few years is very expensive, so many people decide to do everything on their own. But before proceeding with the design of a wooden door, careful preparation should be carried out.

We carry out the work in the following order:

  1. We remove the renewable door from the hinges. To do this, you need to open it slightly, attach a crowbar to the lower edge and press down.
  2. We lay the structure on a flat surface or lean on something.
  3. Carefully remove the wooden glazing beads and take out decorative glass.
  4. We remove all components (it concerns the door with the lock, hinges, handles).
  5. We heat the surface with a building hair dryer and remove the old coating with a spatula. If this is not done, the new finish will not last long. Old paint can be removed with sandpaper, solvent.
  6. We find all chips, cracks, various defects and fill them with putty (or special putty).
  7. Leveling the coverage grinder or sandpaper to make it even and smooth.
  8. We wipe the surface to remove dust from it. Don't get too wet.
  9. We cover the structure with wood stain or drying oil.
  10. We paint with varnish (in 2 layers). If the restoration of the doors will be carried out using other materials, then we cover them with a primer (in 2 layers).
  11. We insert glass with glazing beads, fittings and return the structure to its place.

Painting or varnishing

The fastest and easiest finishing options are painting and varnishing. Paints are different, but for door processing it is better to choose acrylic, oil, alkyd and perchlorovinyl. Do not use water-based formulations, as they wipe off over time, and hand marks remain on the surface. Concerning color scheme, then the finish can match the shade of the walls or create a contrast with them.

The varnish compositions create a transparent coating on the surface, under which the wood pattern is visible. This fact should be taken into account, because all defects will be visible. The best for doors is a polyurethane compound, because it is durable and resistant to mechanical damage.

How to paint or varnish a door? We carry out the work as follows:

  • remove the old layer of paint (varnish) with a blowtorch or industrial hair dryer;
  • we clean and degrease the surface;
  • we find all chips, cracks, dents and putty them;
  • cover with a protective compound;
  • take a brush and paint (varnish) in several layers;
  • we are waiting for complete drying.

Veneer

Veneer is made from wood and is a thin plate of different colors and textures. For its production, oak, walnut, linden or mahogany are used.

How to update an interior door with veneer? The process looks like this:

  1. We remove the old door from its hinges and put it on the supports (you can take ordinary stools).
  2. We dismantle handles, hinges, locks, glass (if any).
  3. We examine the door for defects. They will have to be putty.
  4. Let it dry and sand it with sandpaper.
  5. We dilute protein or skin with water). Its readiness is determined with a stick: we immerse it in the composition and take it out (it should drain in a thin stream).
  6. We heat the glue and apply it to the surface to be finished.
  7. Wait about 5 minutes and apply the veneer.
  8. Lapping with a damp cloth and then with a hot iron. Movements can only be made along the fibers, and from the center to the edges.
  9. We lay the rest of the plates with an overlap, since the material narrows as it cools.
  10. After cooling down, cut off the excess veneer and heat the surface with an iron.
  11. We process the joints with glue film so that the seams do not diverge.
  12. We are waiting for the material to dry and remove the film.
  13. We use a varnish based on rosin and shellac. It should be applied in 3 coats, each of which should dry completely.
  14. We return the locks, handles, hinges to their place.

Wallpaper and photo wallpaper

A great way to update a room is to wallpaper the door. Even inexpensive material will make the design stylish and beautiful. In the selection process, not only your own taste is taken into account, but also compatibility with the interior. This design option is very popular abroad (in the USA, Sweden and Canada). The wallpaper on the doors separated by compartments looks very nice and unusual. If glass is present in the structure, then it is removed and plywood is inserted. Wallpaper is glued on top of it.

If there is a geometric pattern, then it is aligned vertically. On double-leaf doors, the picture must be symmetrical. It is better to paint the places where there will be no wallpaper in the color of the material. Installation is carried out in the following order: the surface is cleaned, degreased and primed. Grinding is done if necessary. For gluing wallpaper, PVA glue is used.

Doors with photo wallpapers look very beautiful and unusual. Of course, they are not cheap, but the variety of patterns will allow you to get a unique finish. Landscapes, animals, night city views, etc. will decorate well any room. The material is glued in the same way as ordinary wallpaper. But you have to think over the completeness of the drawing in advance.

Self-adhesive film

This option for finishing doors is considered one of the most expensive, since the material is quite expensive. Its main characteristics are density, beautiful appearance and durability. In order for the film to adhere well and remain smooth, you will have to properly level the surface.

Let's figure out how to update an interior door with a self-adhesive film:

  • we remove and prepare the structure for finishing;
  • we spray it with a spray bottle (it’s easier to lay the material in the correct position);
  • turn the film to the wrong side and peel off a small area;
  • we apply the material to the surface;
  • carefully place it with a spatula or roller;
  • pierce the bubbles with a needle and smooth the coating.

The dimensions of the self-adhesive film allow you to completely cover the canvas. But if you want, you can use small stickers on the door. This option is perfect for a child's room.

Cloth trim

Cloth door decoration is similar to wallpapering. In this case, it is important to choose the right glue - it should not leave stains on the material. If the choice fell on loose fabric, then you will have to tuck its edges. Working with it is a little more difficult than with wallpaper, but the result exceeds all expectations. This is due to the fact that the variety of colors of the material is wider than that of wallpaper.

How to update an old interior door with a cloth? There are several finishing options:

  1. We paste over with small pieces of fabric, collected in one canvas (patchwork).
  2. We make the bottom of the structure (about 2/3) of fabric, and the top is painted. On the border, you can place a molding, special overlays).
  3. Instead of glass, we insert a drapery of fabric, collected on a thread or fishing line. It can also be closed completely.
  4. We make several square or rectangular inserts arranged vertically.

Polyurethane linings (moldings)

Polyurethane moldings look very stylish and beautiful on the doors. If you wish, you can purchase wooden lining. In stores, they can be seen in different colors and designs. They represent various panels, borders, arcs (and their halves), platbands. As for the surface of products, they are: smooth, embossed, with ornaments, etc. Whole compositions are collected from such an arsenal.

How to update an interior door with moldings? We take liquid nails or any construction glue and fix them on the structure. On sale you can see self-adhesive products, the installation of which is greatly simplified. To assemble complex compositions, you will have to draw a sketch on the door in advance.

Vinyl stickers

A great way to get an updated interior is to use door stickers. They can be in the form of landscapes, animals, plants, cities, children's drawings, unusual patterns, etc. As for the size, the stickers can completely or partially cover the canvas, as well as consist of small elements. Their main advantage is that when they are removed, no traces remain.

There are slate-like stickers. They are well suited for children's rooms, because you can draw on them with chalk. There is nothing difficult in using stickers. Small products can be glued on their own, and large ones - with someone's help. In the process of work, you need to gently smooth the sticker so that its surface is even.

Renovation of doors with glass inserts

If you need to upgrade doors with mirrors or glass, there are several finishes available. Stained-glass windows painted with special paints will look unusual. For work you will also need: stencils, a sketch, glass outlines (silver, white or black).

The process of decorating doors with a stained-glass window (for example, a glass structure) is done as follows:

  • we lay out the sketch on a flat surface;
  • we lay the canvas on top;
  • outline all the lines of the stained-glass window with an artistic outline;
  • wait for drying and fill the space between the contours with paints (colors - to your liking);
  • let it dry and set the canvas in place.

So that the decorated door does not look too pretentious, you can paint any other piece of furniture in the same way (chandelier, chest of drawers, etc.).

Mosaic

Also, the door decor can be done using mosaics. It is even suitable for a bathroom, as it is resistant to moisture. From these small elements, ceramic or glass compositions are assembled. The uniqueness of the design will be given by additional decorations in the form of sea or river pebbles.

When choosing a material, one should take into account the fact that the weight of the door increases due to the mosaic. It is very important that the door frame is ready for such a load. Wooden veneer or acrylic glass (instead of stones and ceramics) will help reduce the load.

Let's try to figure out how to update an interior door with our own hands. First, we sketch on it using a simple pencil. Then we take "liquid nails" and begin to glue the large fragments. When they are in place, you can start with the small details.

Decoupage

Doors can be restored using decoupage. The work consists in applying ready-made drawings to the structure (from fabric, wallpaper, napkins, newspapers or ready-made decoupage cards). We carry out the decoration process as follows:

  • preparing the canvas for work;
  • we cut out the drawings we like and soak them in water;
  • slightly dry them, place them on the structure and cover them with PVA glue (both the drawing and the doors);
  • we smooth the product well so that there are no bubbles and folds on it;
  • we apply a little putty on its edges (must be matched by color);
  • we grind this layer with sandpaper;
  • if necessary, varnish (1-2 layers).

Decoupage can be done in several ways:

  • to trim some areas (suitable for structures with bulges and curly divisions);
  • decorate a small part of the canvas or close it completely;
  • randomly fill free space or assemble a thematic panel from individual motives (for example, a world map).

Art painting

Among the variety, it is worth highlighting art painting. If you have the skills in this matter, you can immediately get to work. An excellent effect can be achieved if you use the floor, walls and ceiling in painting. A great option is to draw letters, names, philosophical phrases or any wishes.

But what if there is no artistic experience, but you want to get a masterpiece? Special stencils, which are sold in building and stationery stores, will help here. If necessary, they can be cut out of cardboard or self-adhesive foil.

Let's figure out how to decorate the door with our own hands:

  • we carry out preparation in the same way as before staining;
  • we apply or glue the stencil (we monitor it snugly);
  • apply paint with a roller or spray.

It is better to complete the restored structure with a new handle, hinges and lock. Metal fittings wear out over time and should be replaced.

Decor with scrap materials

How to update an interior door if there are no finishing materials at hand? Any unnecessary items will go into business: shells, lids, mesh bags, egg trays, etc.

Let's try to decorate the doors with egg trays (we save them in advance):

  • tear or cut paper cells into small pieces;
  • moisten them with water;
  • we arrange the elements in a chaotic order (or lay them out in a simple pattern) and fix them with glue. A glue gun will help speed up the work;
  • place the rest of the decorative elements;
  • cover the surface with spray paint.

Another way to renovate doors is the sandblasting technique, which is used to shape glass inserts. This finishing option will require the involvement of specialists, because it will be difficult to do this on your own.

Decorating doors with various decorative elements is a real creative process that will bring pleasure. Also, the owner of the house will appreciate the result of the work and the opportunity to save money. Thanks to the above finishing options, you can get a truly unique interior door (with a mirror, glass or solid).

Having completed repairs in the room, the owners may be faced with the fact that the old interior door does not correspond to the new interior, although in terms of its functional abilities it can still serve for some time. In this case, you should think about how to update the interior door with your own hands. There are several decorative techniques that differ in the complexity of execution and the cost of materials. You just have to choose the most suitable one.

Preparatory work

Before decorating interior doors, they are prepared. For this, the following tools are used:

  • construction glue;
  • tracing paper;
  • Press.

It is necessary to dismantle the door. Then examine the canvas for defects. If the old box has scratches, they need to be repaired with wood putty. You can decorate the canvas with photo wallpaper. If in some places the doors are peeling, then an adhesive mixture is applied, tracing paper is applied, pressed. An adhesive mixture is also used to seal cracks and micro-crevices. If the defects are large, finely dispersed shavings are added to the adhesive.

Doors update methods

Simple ways to update the canvas include:

  • applying varnish;
  • staining;
  • the use of stain and veneer;
  • stained glass window.

Painting, varnishing and staining

Old wooden doors can be renovated by painting, varnishing and staining.

For the used water, synthetic and organic dyes. After that, the door takes on a neat appearance.

The door leaf is possible. Wood varnish is well absorbed into the wood, evenly covering the entire surface of the structure. The main plus of the protective and decorative composition is the presence of a toning base.
To apply varnish, use a spray gun or brushes. Experts advise to ennoble the tree with a brush that easily repeats the structure of the structure, soaking hard-to-reach areas well. To increase the protective properties, it is recommended to paint the door in 2 layers.

If you have to freshen the box again, stain is used. Then the coating is varnished. Stain can be applied to renovate colors canvases. It prevents mixing of tones, and due to subsequent varnishing, the brightness of the color is enhanced. Sanding gives a matte finish.

If there is no need to create a matte surface, polishing and drying is carried out after grinding. This technology gives the door a crystal shine.

Veneering

Veneer is used to decorate the door. This technique of decorating wooden canvases is used if they are made from cheap sawdust. Due to veneering, the door acquires an aesthetic appearance. Veneer must be glued transversely to the wood fiber.

Veneer gives the door a noble appearance of a real solid wood

Self-adhesive film

You can decorate the box with self-adhesive vinyl imitating wood. With this technique, coating defects are easily hidden. Before you paste over a wooden door, you will need to prepare a hair dryer, fabric, scissors.

At the first stage, the coating is cleaned from various defects. This stage is considered the most difficult. Next, the marking is performed using a tape measure. These canvases are transferred to the millimeter markings made by the manufacturer on the back of the film. A knife is used to cut the product.

The film hides all minor defects and makes the surface look like natural wood

Cut pieces of self-adhesive are applied to the desired site doors. There is a protective layer on the seamy side of the film, under which there is glue. Carefully peel off a few centimeters of the layer to adhere the product to the door.

The cover, completely applied to the door, is smoothed out with a rubber trowel or soft material. Self-adhesive is wrapped on all ends of the coating. The corners of the PVC product are immediately cut, a lock with a handle is installed.

Wallpaper

With the help of modern photo printing, an image of the required size is transferred onto paper. Wall murals on wooden doors look beautiful. Any image is printed. To do this, you can use the services of an advertising agency or printing house. The image can be selected at home or with the help of specialists.

Photo wallpaper is one of the options for updating interior doors.

On plain wallpaper, you can stick polyurethane or foam moldings. In this case, the style in which the doors were decorated will change. The resulting design is suitable for a room decorated in classic style... If you use a colored background or curved moldings, then the doors will be decorated in Provence style.

Before drawing the pattern, the surface is leveled, processed with glue. If paint comes off the door, it is removed. Wallpaper is also processed with glue.

A rubber roller is used to level the canvas. If bubbles remain, remove them with a plastic spatula. Then, the remaining air is removed from the center of the structure to the edges. With the help of this spatula, the joints of the wallpaper (if any) are ironed. If the technology is performed correctly, then the joints are not visible.

Wallpaper with moldings is suitable for classic interiors

The edges of the wallpaper must be cut with a knife. This is done until the glue softens the wallpaper. Otherwise, they will tear and stretch easily. Leave to dry for several hours. The process of decorating fiberboard or solid wood continues in 12-24 hours. It depends on the temperature regime and humidity levels.

A simple pencil is used for marking. After the drawing has been applied, you will need to measure the length of the molding components with a tape measure. Then they are cut off, and the edges are sawn at an angle of 45 degrees. With the help of PVA glue, the back surface of the pieces is spread. They need to be glued along the exposed markings. When the canvas is dry, you can put it back. According to this principle, at home, you can update the doors of the bedroom, nursery, kitchen.

Drawings and paintings

The advantages of this decor include:

  • beautiful and original appearance;
  • simple execution;
  • the ability to use ready-made stencils;
  • wide range of materials;
  • the embodiment of different ideas.

The downside of this method is that it requires artistic skill to apply..
At the first stage, the coating is degreased with alcohol and treated with a primer. The last composition is applied twice. Similarly applies acrylic paint... Each next layer of paint is applied after the first layer has dried.

When zoning, the shape of the paneling part of the covering and the geometry of the ornament are taken into account. To give the surface a vintage look, the contours of the zones are covered with a different color. The paint can be applied with a sponge. The stripes that protrude on the door can be painted gold. Then the ornament is transferred to the surface and painted in suitable colors.

Decorating using decoupage technique

Decoupage does not require dismantling the door structure. You just need to wash and dry the coating. The opening is pre-pasted over with mounting tape. The tree is well and efficiently primed. The surface is rubbed with a simple paraffin candle and then painted. The next stage is gluing a decoupage card. It is pre-soaked in water for 12 minutes. The remaining water drops are wiped off with a cloth. The back of the strips and the door surface are processed with PVA glue.

For decoupage the door, special decoupage cards are used.

Each piece is glued tightly. In this case, you need to ensure that folds and bubbles do not appear. If such defects are not eliminated immediately after their appearance, the coating will turn out to be uneven.... If the coating is dry, putty is applied to the edge of the components. Excess composition will need to be removed with a wet rag or emery. A lacquered box will require a longer preparation for painting. The varnish is preliminarily removed, defects are eliminated.

If necessary, the edges of the canvas are processed, scuffs are left. This technology will give the flooring a vintage look. If respected step-by-step instruction, then the finished decorated doors will look original with details different shapes... They can be cut from napkins. The color of the future canvas is selected taking into account the shade of the interior of the entire room. The gluing of the material is carried out according to the above method. The finished coating is varnished with an acrylic base.

Antique decoration

An antique wooden door can be seen not only in apartments, but also in houses and offices. At the same time, decor that imitates antiques is rare. It gives individuality to the door leaf. Craquelure means a two-layer application of varnish on the door. Particular attention is paid to the process of selecting the varnish - each layer should have a different composition and different time drying. Preliminary cleaning, degreasing and drying of the coating is carried out.

Craquelure gives the door the look of old wood

To age the door, you will need some materials:

  • special varnish for craquelure;
  • bituminous varnish, which gives the effect of antiquity;
  • acrylic paint.

Craquelure varnish is applied to the prepared coating. If 1 layer is dry, 2 layer is applied - bituminous varnish. It is needed to enhance contrast when using a white background. If a dark tone is applied, acrylic paint is applied. This technology is considered the best. If necessary, the craquelure varnish is replaced with simple PVA glue, vinegar, egg white or gelatin. This door renovation technique is suitable for people who like antique style.

Decor with stencils

If you have skill in the processing of wood products, you can use a more complex renewal of the canvas. To apply decor with a stencil, you will need:

  • leather;
  • glass or mirror tiles;
  • stained glass;
  • mat;
  • bamboo curtains;
  • bars;
  • veneer.

To carry out such a decor requires perseverance and good imagination. As a result, it will be possible to make an original door that will perfectly fit into any interior.

Using stencils, you can change the design of the door

The door, the leaf of which has been replaced by a stained-glass window, gives the room an unusual look. To implement this idea, water paint is used. Previously, the desired pattern is thrown onto the surface. Paint is used to transfer the design to the glass cover. This procedure is performed in a specific sequence:

  • preparation of a sketch of a drawing on paper;
  • glass processing by cleaning and degreasing;
  • substitution of the picture to the glass, followed by a stroke from the back with a thin brush;
  • receipt of the outline of the drawing different colors paints.

After the completion of the process, the paints should dry within 22 hours. Then a piece of glass is mounted in the door, well fixed.

Opening and Slope Updates

In addition to the door itself, the doorway is also being updated. If this is not done, then the canvas will have an unfinished look. In order to successfully complete the above work, it is recommended to think over the finishing step by step.

The decoration of the slopes and the opening must match the interior of the door and room

In the first step, support guides are processed. Then they are repainted in the same color as the door leaf. In case of severe wear, plasterboard sheathing is mounted on the guides. In the presence of roughness, perforated corners are used for cladding. Then the opening is repainted.

In the future, it will be required correctly. For their installation, special clamps are used that hold the platbands well. In the absence of clamps, glue or self-tapping screws are used.

If the door is updated only with the opening, and the slopes remain the same, then the decor process is considered incomplete. For finishing the slopes, different methods are used. More often, special MDF strips are used to update the slopes. You can also install plasterboard slopes that are fixed on perforated corners or glue.

Another technique for finishing the slope is plastering. This process is the most time consuming and requires experience and qualifications in this matter. Experts believe that the best solution is plastering followed by installation of pearlite slopes, which are not cheap. But in the end, you can get strong and durable slopes. Mold does not appear on them.

  • Cover the surface with linseed oil or stain (these substances will help protect the doors from moisture), further work is performed only after the substance is completely absorbed.
  • The dismantled glass is inserted, fixed with new glazing beads.

  • it is recommended to use only a cleaning agent for work finishing material, which is easy to clean from various contaminants.

Sticking wallpaper on the door is no different from sticking it on the walls:

  1. The prepared canvas (cleaned from the old paint layer) is covered with a layer of special glue.
  2. The selected wallpaper is also smeared with an adhesive mixture, applied to the door, pressed firmly and rubbed with a cloth to remove air bubbles.
  3. Glue the necessary decorative elements that will create the required composition.

This is one of the most expensive restoration methods, since the material itself has a very high cost. It can be found in hardware stores, it is quite dense, beautiful and durable.

Important! For the film to lay down smoothly, the door surface must be perfectly flat!

Technology for applying self-adhesive film to the door leaf:

  • The prepared door leaf is thoroughly degreased.
  • Spray the surface with a spray gun so that the material can be laid in the correct position.

  • Peel off a small section of the seamy side from the edge of the film, apply it to the door.
  • Gently distribute the material over the entire surface of the restored product, helping themselves with a spatula or roller (they will firmly press the film to the surface).
  • The resulting bubbles are punctured with a needle to remove air.

V wooden house, basically, and the doors are made of the same material, which undoubtedly looks very attractive. Unfortunately, the age of such beauty is not long, especially if the doors were covered with paint or varnish. Both coatings do not have a very good ability to climb, and they do it unevenly, leaving ugly "glades" with peeling paint on the surface of the interior doors. The doors themselves are still in excellent condition, work perfectly, and are not going to fail. Throwing out wooden interior doors in the trash is too expensive a "pleasure", because you can restore a wooden door with your own hands without even resorting to the help of craftsmen.

Doors made of natural wood are often perfectly preserved under a layer of varnishes or dyes. Why not? You protect your wooden house by painting it from decay, bark beetles and larvae, so your doors have been preserved in their original form thanks to the protection. Now you are faced with one truly grandiose task: to clean the surface of varnish or paint. At the same time, not only to completely destroy all traces of their presence, but also not to spoil the array, so that you definitely do not have to throw away the still priceless structure.

Remove varnish

Let's talk first about an easier problem: polish shredding. On store shelves, you can easily find an abundance of solvents that will undoubtedly do an excellent job, if, of course, you make the right choice.

1. Buy a composition that is designed specifically for wood, work with it slowly and very carefully.

2. Do not forget that some types of solvents not only remove varnish from the surface, but also smear it on the wood.

3. Do not try to clean the entire door at once, do it in parts.

5. Avoid soaking the material with solvent.

Getting rid of paint

Removing paint, especially if it is in layers, can be extremely difficult and you need a lot of patience. It is possible that you will have to go through several methods before you can cope with the task at hand. Do not despair, but feel free to get down to work, you will see what an excellent result will be. Let's take a look at all the options for removing old paintwork.

Method one: chemical

These include all the same solvents, only now they will be assigned to wash off the paint. There are several such substances and each can save your doors from a certain type of dye: oil, nitrocellulose or acrylic. If you are aware of what composition the surface was painted with, then you can breathe a sigh of relief: you are very lucky and you have saved time, effort and finances. If you doubt its nature, then you will have to try all types of solvents in turn before you can restore a wooden door with your own hands.

Such work should be carried out, if not in a gas mask, then in a mask, because the smell of all substances is very pungent, and in some it is especially. Do not forget to wear gloves and "drive" all family members and animals out of the house. Having breathed in plenty of fumes, they can get poisoned. As you can see, the task is serious, especially since the solvents will have to be sorted out one by one, which will take a lot of time.

Another caveat: the price of washes is quite high, and not a small amount of them will go to the door. Before buying a large batch, make sure that this is exactly the substance you need.

Method two: mechanical

"Mechanical" in this case means: do it yourself with the help of simple tools. Take a chisel, knife or scraper and start scrubbing the surface. Work slowly, carefully, moving in the direction of the grain of the wood. Backward and backward motions will result in burrs, scratches and ridges, but you want the perfect surface. A sandpaper (sandpaper) and, of course, a sander are good at cleaning off the paint. If you were removing paint on the floor, you could use a grinder with an emery disc, but the door still requires a more subtle approach.

Method three: heating

The thermal method is as old as the mechanical one, and no less reliable. The paint does not like heating and begins to melt at a certain temperature. At this moment, it is easy to remove it from any surface, and even more so from a wooden one. How can the coating be melted without damaging the door surface?

Firstly, it is a blowtorch, with which the paint is simply burned out.

Secondly, construction hair dryer which softens the dye and allows it to be scraped off with a spatula or scraper.

Thirdly, an ordinary iron of the old design. Why old, so because it is heavy and will press more tightly to the surface. Take regular foil, put it on the section of the door, put on a hot iron and wait for the paint to heat up. When heated and melted, the dye will stick to the foil and stretch with it. If you put the iron on the fabric, as it is sometimes advised, the paint will not stick and you will have to clean it off with a scraper again after the first bubbles appear.

After you have tested all the proposed tools, stop at one of them and, in the end, get rid of the paint, you need to move on to preparing the surface of the doors for restoration.

Surface preparation

What are you striving for and what should you get as a result? You need a completely new surface that will be free from all defects, will become even, smooth and will reveal the excellent quality of wood to your eyes. For this, the door needs, first of all, sanding.

Pick up coarse sandpaper and start sanding, keeping in mind the direction of the grain. Then you change the skin to a smaller one, and then to a very tiny one. Sanding is carried out very carefully, especially in hard-to-reach places. By the way, did you forget to remove the fittings before starting work? It is very convenient to work with a grinder, but if there is none, then you can do the whole grinding procedure with your hands.

Cracks, chips and other defects are perfectly masked with acrylic fillers for wood. They exist in different shades and there is always an opportunity to choose the color you need. If the defect is so large that it cannot be disguised, you will have to glue an overlay. It must be suitable for the type of wood and have a shade of solid, otherwise the restoration of the door with your own hands will look like patching holes.

Restoration

So you have come to the end of the story with the old door: restoration, although everything that you have been doing up to this point, in fact, is it, and this is just the final stage. For him, you need to choose from abundance paints and varnishes one that will decorate the doors in a wooden house. In addition to colored dyes, it is possible to use old acquaintances: stain and varnish.

The best method for applying the stain is with a spray bottle. Its use is limited to the fact that you are indoors. Take the door to the site and work there. The varnish is applied in the same way.

In a confined space, the stain is applied with a sponge or synthetic brush. Excess substance or its lumps must be removed immediately with a clean cloth. The varnish can be applied with a roller and brush. All auxiliary tools must be of high quality, and do not leave streaks, smudges and lint on the surface of the doors.

After the paint, stain or varnish is completely dry, you can put the fittings.

Door frame restoration

As you can imagine, the door does not hang in the air by itself, but interacts with the door frame, which also needs to be restored. It is possible that someone will decide that it is better to buy a new product than to mess with an old one, but…. Any tree, even the best, deforms over time: gaps are formed between the sash and the frame, the tongue of the lock does not fit well into the hole for it, the door leaf sags. Replacing the old structure with a new one will only aggravate the situation, since it will not fit the updated door at all. In this situation, it is better to correct both components: the door and the frame, and not change the latter. So, with the door frame, you will have to perform the same manipulations to get a single ensemble, plus fit it to the door.

We figured out how to restore a wooden door with our own hands. The work has been completed and in front of you is an updated interior door, which you once wanted to get rid of. And all that was necessary was to be patient, make efforts and observe the technology of the process.
