Reincarnation of the door: the subtleties of coloring. Wood door painting technology

Wooden interior doors have been and remain at the peak of popularity due to the natural beauty of wood and the performance characteristics of this material. Such canvases are distinguished by good sound and heat insulation properties, aesthetic appeal, reliability and durability. They are easy to fit into any interior. However, even the highest quality doors made from expensive wood species lose their attractive appearance.

Temperature extremes, high humidity and intense daily stress lead to inevitable deformation of wooden products. First of all, the outer cladding suffers. But the loss of the presentable look of the canvases is not a reason to part with them. Do-it-yourself painting will help restore wooden doors to their former attractiveness. You just need to choose the right paint and varnish composition and carry out the work in accordance with the technology.

The choice of paint and varnish material

There are many paints and varnishes that will help you update your door leaf at home. They can be conditionally divided into several groups: paints, varnishes, stains, decorative and protective impregnations. The choice of the desired dye is determined by the external condition of the product. So, if the door is relatively new, then it is better not to hide the natural beauty of wood, but to emphasize, giving preference to transparent and slightly tinted compositions. But how to paint an old wooden interior door?

If the product has completely lost its original appearance, then you should think about compositions with good covering ability. In this case, it is possible to paint with paints of a certain composition and enamels, and with good processing of the canvas, with stain and varnish as a fixing. Next, we will consider the main types of paints and varnishes, their advantages and conditions of use.

Dye

If it was decided to paint the doors in a bright and monochromatic color that will harmoniously match the color scheme of the room, the choice of paint in this case is the ideal solution. The range of such products is very extensive. There are specialized compositions for painting wood. However, only high-quality paint is capable of creating a durable coating, therefore, its choice must be approached responsibly.

Paints for wooden doors there are different types and have their own characteristics:

  • Alkyd. Presented in a wide range of colors and shades. After complete drying, a strong and durable layer is created on the surface, resistant to various external factors. A wear-resistant coating will protect the wood from mechanical damage. However, alkyd-based enamels have a significant drawback - a strong pungent odor that persists for several days. Therefore, it is better to paint doors with such compounds on the street or in a well-ventilated area.

  • Acrylic. These are water-based paints, and therefore do not have a toxic odor. The main advantages of these formulations are that they are easy to apply, they have good covering ability, and are safe for health. Special acrylic-based wood paint suitable for painting doors at home. You do not have to leave the apartment to wait for it to dry completely. However, the main disadvantage is the low strength of the coating, it is recommended to additionally cover the surface with acrylic varnish.

  • Nitro paints. They belong to the group of solvent-based formulations. They create a durable and resistant coating on the surface, but they emit toxic fumes, which often lead to allergic reactions. You need to work with this type of paint only in protective equipment and preferably in the fresh air.

  • Polyurethane. They have good covering ability. The coating turns out to be resistant to various negative factors, not afraid of moisture and temperature extremes. Paint with polyurethane paint better doors not in the apartment, but in the bathhouse.

  • Oil. They are considered the most affordable in price, have a long service life (up to 5 years). However, a tree covered with such paint is unable to "breathe". In addition, the composition dries for a very long time and emits toxic fumes. Use paint with a different composition is better.

Varnish

This category of materials includes compositions that are more often used to consolidate the result after staining. acrylic paint or stain. Varnishes are transparent and tinted. The former are ideal for emphasizing the natural texture of the wood, while the latter are ideal for imparting a faint shade and shine.

Varnish is used not only in decorative purposes, it is necessary when the surface of a wooden product needs to be protected from external adverse factors.

There are several types of varnish:

  • Alkyd. Just like paint from this group, it creates a durable coating that is resistant to temperature fluctuations and has water-repellent properties.

  • Acrylic. The material is resistant to high humidity, does not deteriorate under the influence ultraviolet rays... It does not have a pungent odor, it is glossy and matte.

  • Nitrocellulose. Painting of interior doors with such a composition is possible only in dry rooms with an optimal microclimate, since the resulting coating does not have sufficient strength and can quickly crack.

  • Polyurethane. It has good adhesion to wood surfaces, is characterized by the strength and durability of the coating. It can be glossy, semi-glossy and matte. This varnish can be used to cover not only doors, but also veneer, countertop and even parquet.

  • Polyester. It has high strength and durability, but is toxic. It has a pungent chemical odor, so it is best used to cover street doors.

Stain

You can paint the interior doors at home with a stain. Such compositions are opaque, intended for toning wood and its temporary protection from negative impacts... The stain perfectly emphasizes the wood structure, but requires periodic renewal of the layer.

There are several types of compositions:

  • On a lacquer base. This includes a stain with the ability to dry quickly, it is also called azure. The color is uneven, so experts recommend covering the surface with such a composition with a spray gun.

  • Oil based. This stain gives a dark shade to the wood, it is quite thick, so it must be thinned with a solvent before use.

  • Water based. The composition penetrates deeply into the structure of the tree, giving a rich shade and clarity to the pattern. On a wooden surface, the decorative layer looks beautiful and retains its properties for a long time.

  • Alcohol-based. Stain is more expensive than other varieties and has a strong unpleasant odor, the advantages include quick drying.

Important! If the wooden door will not be treated with protective agents against rot, mildew and mildew, choose a stain with antiseptic properties.

Impregnation

Colored impregnations are also great for renovating an old wooden door. They belong to decorative and protective compositions. Most often, two types of impregnation are used for wood processing: oil-based and wax-based. With their help, it is possible to process the canvas and tint it, to give a beautiful shade, while the substance layer does not hide the beautiful texture of the wood.

In addition to the decorative function, impregnations have bio- and fire-retardant properties. Penetrating deep into the layers of wood fibers, they are able to increase the surface resistance to moisture, prevent the formation of mold and mildew. The formulations are easy to use, and a special wood polish can be used for greater shine.

What color should I paint?

Choosing the right one colors largely depends on the available furniture, the color of the walls and floor. Doors should harmoniously fit into the design of the room. Most often, white, brown, a shade of wenge is chosen as the main color for the panel, since they are considered universal. However, this is not always the case. For example, white doors are not appropriate in a dark interior. In addition, a door painted in a light shade in the kitchen or corridor will quickly get dirty - this is not practical.

Modern designers define three main groups of shades:

  • Pastel - light blue, beige, peach, pale pink, lavender.
  • Saturated dark- brown, wenge, cherry, dark blue, chocolate.
  • Bright colors - yellow, lemon, red, orange, emerald.

The color of the interior door in the desired color is determined by the place of installation of the canvas and the purpose of the room. Here are some guidelines for choosing paint colors:

  • V wooden house or an apartment with a partial decoration of walls made of wood, interior doors are installed from the same material. In this case, you should choose a transparent varnish or impregnation with weak tinting properties.
  • The interior of the bedroom is most often dominated by pastel colors. Therefore, for painting doors, you should choose white, beige, gray, lavender - any calm and neutral shades.
  • Dark colors (cherry, wenge, chocolate) will be more appropriate in the living room. These shades will add more luxury and sophistication to the interior.
  • Doors will look great in the children's room bright colors... If the canvas is installed in the play area, then more than one color can be used for painting.

Note! Interior doors, regardless of the purpose of the room, should be slightly darker or lighter than the walls.

Tools and materials for work

Before you start painting the door with your own hands, you need to prepare the canvas. To do this, you may need the following materials and tools:

  • screwdrivers, screwdriver;
  • grinder;
  • construction hair dryer;
  • sandpaper;
  • remover or solvent;
  • wood putty;
  • primer composition;
  • rubber spatula.

To paint the surface, you cannot do without a brush and roller. If the chosen dye is sufficiently liquid consistency, you can use a spray gun - with it work will go faster. As additional and equally important tools, you need to prepare a paint bath, gloves, an unnecessary rag, masking tape.

Preparing the door leaf

Repaint old door from wood is possible only after careful preparation of the canvas. To do this, first remove the door from the hinges, disassemble all the fittings (handle, locking mechanism and other parts). If there are no special skills, these elements can be left, then you will have to isolate them with foil and tape. The canvas is laid in a horizontal position for ease of use, after which the main part of surface preparation is started.

Removing the old coating

It will not be possible to carry out high-quality painting of the door surface if there is an old coating, and even with defects. That is why at this stage it is necessary to remove the layer of old paint or varnish. This can be done using a variety of available tools.

Consider several effective ways cleaning the door leaf:

  • Grinding machine. A door covered with a thin layer of old paint can be sanded. This is the fastest and least labor-intensive method of all. However, it is not suitable if the canvas is decorated with carvings or curly elements. How Alternative option, you can use coarse sandpaper, but time and physical costs are inevitable.

  • Building hairdryer. This is a special tool that is designed to heat various types of surfaces. It will also be effective when applied. To do this, a stream of hot air is directed to the old coating (just do not hold the tool too close to the surface, otherwise there is a risk of fire). With intense heating, old paint will soften and can be easily removed with a spatula.

  • With a remover or solvent. You can purchase a paint remover from your hardware store. However, such products must be used very carefully, preferably outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, as their pungent odor is toxic.

Important! When choosing any method for removing old coatings, a product such as rubber gloves, goggles, a mask or respirator should be used.

Elimination of defects

If you find any defects (cracks, chips, scratches) on the surface of the door leaf, they must be eliminated. This can be done with wood putty. The composition is applied to the damaged area, the entire mass is leveled with a rubber spatula. The surface covered with such a putty must be allowed to dry, after which the treatment site is thoroughly cleaned with sandpaper. As a result, there should be no unevenness or lumps of dried putty.

Finishing sanding

When all defects are eliminated, cracks and scratches are putty, you can proceed to the last stage. preparatory activities... To repaint the doors with high quality, their surface must be perfectly smooth. This is necessary for easier paint application. Grinding is carried out with the same grinder or fine-grained emery paper. Then, wood dust must be removed from the surface with a vacuum cleaner.

Dyeing technology

The door is prepared, the paint and varnish material is selected, the only thing left to do is to start painting. But first you need to prepare workplace and tools. The canvas should be laid on a surface pre-covered with plastic wrap, and the brush should be rinsed with warm water and combed - this will help remove poorly fixed hairs that can spoil the staining result. How to paint a wooden door correctly will be guided by the instructions below.

Painting with enamel or varnish

Do-it-yourself staining is very simple if you correctly approach this process. First, the surface must be treated with a primer, this will improve the adhesion of the coloring material to the main one, and the coating will last longer after drying.

Next step-by-step instruction will help you achieve a quality result:

  1. Open a can of paint, mix the composition thoroughly. If necessary, dilute with a solvent (if the instructions on the package allow it). Pour some paint into a paint bath.
  2. Dip a brush in paint and treat with it first all protruding elements (panels, ends), as well as corners.
  3. Next, paint the flat areas evenly with a roller. You should start from the upper left corner, gradually moving to the right.
  4. One layer of paint will not be enough, therefore, after the first has dried, apply a second layer (the more, the better), but only in the opposite direction.
  5. After final drying, the door leaf must be turned over to the other side and all the same steps must be repeated.

Varnish application is no different from the process described above. However, there is one difference - you need to perform interlayer grinding. After each layer (well dried), sand the surface with medium-grain sandpaper. With each subsequent layer, the grain size of the skin should be less. The finishing layer on the lacquered surface does not require such treatment.

Stain coating

If a stain has been chosen, then the doors do not need priming before painting, since the composition penetrates deeply into the wood fibers. There are several painting methods: rubbing, spraying, staining and brushing. The last option the simplest, we will consider the whole process in more detail.

How to cover the doors with a stain:

  1. The composition fits better on wet wood, so first you need to moisten the surface of the canvas with water.
  2. Using a brush, apply a thin layer of stain along the grain. After drying, apply the next one, but across it.
  3. At the same time, we cover the lower part of the canvas, otherwise the staining will turn out to be uneven, since the stain quickly penetrates into the deep layers of the tree.
  4. If using water-based stains, sand with a zero sandpaper before finishing, but if using alcohol, this step can be skipped.
  5. At this stage, we clean the canvas from wood dust and apply the last decorative layer. Open with colorless varnish if desired.

On the video: stain - how to apply it and how deep does it penetrate?

Treatment by impregnation or wax

Decorative impregnations on an oil or wax base have their own nuances in application. For surface treatment, use a soft bristled brush, roller or foam sponge. First, the composition is thoroughly mixed, after which it is applied in a small amount to one area and everything is rolled out with a roller. To avoid streaks or dark areas, process at an accelerated rate, evenly distributing the substance over the entire area.

The impregnation dries on average about 8-12 hours, the next layer should be applied no later than a day after the previous one dries.

Imitation of natural wood

To repaint the interior doors in an apartment, it is not always enough to simply apply several coats of paint. Sometimes you want to see the natural pattern of a tree on the surface of the canvas. If your doors are made of MDF or sheathed with regular plywood, they can be painted with a natural wood look. There are two methods for doing this.

Option one

The door leaf is covered with light-colored paint. It is recommended to choose a gray, beige or yellowish undertone. When the layer is completely dry, apply liquid soap with a wide brush. A layer of darker paint is applied on top (you can choose dark brown or a color similar to "wenge"). Excess liquid soap will begin to appear through this layer - they should be washed off. The result is a coating with a wood grain pattern.

Option two

First, the door is covered with paint of one color (also light), after drying a second layer of darker paint. They take a special brush with a relief surface (it can be purchased at any hardware store) and run it over the still wet coating. This is how lines and curls appear spontaneously, which together give an imitation of a woody pattern. After drying, the decorative layer is sanded to make it natural and varnished.

As you can see, there is different ways painting doors at home. Correctly selected coloring composition and adherence to technology will allow you to get a high-quality, durable and aesthetically pleasing coating. The choice of color and decor of interior doors is a matter of taste for everyone.

Simple technology for painting a door for three kopecks (1 video)

The loss of the original aesthetic appeal of a wooden door is not a reason to part with it. Why waste your savings in vain if all options for its restoration are available to craftsmen who are ignorant of the intricacies of woodworking. It is certainly difficult to master the secrets of cabinetmaker's skill in a couple of days, but painting wooden doors will not cause difficulties. However, there are nuances in this simple matter, without the knowledge of which it is difficult to achieve an ideal result.

How will we paint our wooden door?

The choice of compositions for dyeing wood is very extensive. First of all, let's decide whether it is desirable to preserve and highlight the natural beauty of a natural array or whether it is required to completely hide the texture pattern by covering it with a solid opaque layer. Taking into account our own taste preferences, we will pay attention to:

  • opaque enamels and coloring compositions with acrylic, polyurethane, alkyd, perchlorovinyl and obsolete oil bases, which are rarely found in domestic products;
  • transparent and tinted varnishes, oil impregnations, stains that refresh the color of wood or give new shades.

We will not talk about taste priorities. Let's just heed the advice of experienced painters who recommend home craftsmen to purchase:

  • acrylic paints with a water base, because they have the optimal consistency for working with a brush, excellent spreading and decent hiding power, somewhat inferior to oil paints;
  • alkyd paints and varnishes, characterized by high water-repellent qualities, resistance to temperature fluctuations and drying speed.

Important. All colorants with an alkyd resin base are applied only to a completely dry surface. If the wood is damp, the paint layer will peel off and flake off due to the air bubbles formed underneath.

Those who want to figure out how to paint a wooden door have no doubt guessed that painting is done in several stages. Often using two different formulations. First, an impregnation is used with or without a tinted effect, then a decorative coating is applied. It is important to select formulations that work flawlessly in tandem. For example, drying oil is not applicable before varnishing. Only stain!

Even if it is decided to refresh the color of the canvas and jambs exclusively with stain or oil impregnation, one layer is not enough. Two or three stages have to be done, the surface will tell. You will have to paint as many times as necessary for the perfect result.

Sequence of the painting process

Since the list of components of the door structure includes not only the canvas, the stage that precedes the whole action is the competent preparation of the object. You can, of course, limit yourself to painting only the canvas, but then the jambs with the lintel will be different. So, for home craftsmen who decided to paint the doors with their own with my own hands, you need to do this:

  • remove the leaf of the door structure from the hinges and lay it on two stools, a work table or trestles. If you plan to use a caustic alkyd composition, it is advisable to sit in the yard, on the terrace or balcony;
  • without removing the leaf, block it with wedges so that the panel brush has access to all elements of the door. The lock is also needed so that the door does not accidentally close during the drying period, and the dye layer is not irretrievably damaged.

It is recommended to remove the canvas, but if it is impossible to follow the rules, then the second option is applicable. The fittings also need to be dismantled. In a hopeless case with non-removable loops, the handles must be wrapped in paper and fixed with tape, but it is better to wrap them in foil with a tight fit of all parts. It is better to fix the lock mechanisms and seal them with tape.

Wood surface preparation

The most significant multi-step process that requires diligence to get the stain you want. We will carry out preparation according to the following standard scheme:

  • First, remove all layers of paint, primers and fillers down to the wood. Those who are not afraid of dust and dirt can use grinder or homemade device, created from a bar that is comfortable on the hand with medium-grained sandpaper glued or nailed to the working side. Owners building hair dryers easier, they will heat up and remove the blistered paint with a spatula. There is also a simple, but costly way - special wood washes.
  • Then the initial sanding awaits us, as a result of which small dents, paint residues and scratches are eliminated. We grind with a machine connected to a vacuum cleaner, or, in a simple way, with medium-grain sandpaper.
  • We putty major flaws, buying for this a putty corresponding to the wood, if it is supposed to cover the door with a transparent composition: oil, stain, varnish. If we paint with opaque enamel, it is not necessary to select the color of the putty. Do not forget about the gaps between the decorative elements of the canvas and the canvas itself, between the jamb and the lintel.
  • We have passed the time specified by the putty manufacturer in the manual, and we grind it again with sandpaper. First, we use a nozzle on a typewriter or a simple abrasive paper with a medium grain, at the finish we use a fine-grained analogue.

Advice. Deep dents for opaque paint can be repaired with auto-filler, which does not contain fiberglass.

Note. A natural solid that has darkened under a layer of old paint or varnish can be slightly bleached with a mixture of one part bleach with bleach and three parts water.

Everything was processed, cleaned of old varnish or paint, from the putty that came out. Vacuum, wipe with a damp cloth, dry, proceed to staining.

Paint the door without special effects

That is, we will not start at the beginning creative path the future phenomenal painter and cabinetmaker to get carried away with artificial aging. We will not create the impression of a photo wallpaper or a painted array with uncovered structural lines. At the initial stage, we will learn how to paint the door evenly without frozen smudges and stains visible under the varnish.

How to paint with a spray gun, the video will demonstrate:

If you have to paint only one or two doors, it is unprofitable to purchase a sprayer. We stock up on a narrow paneling brush for a canvas of the same name and a roller for all types of canvas.

Note. Before starting the working process, the brush must be fluffed; all loosely fixed hairs must be helped to crawl out and leave.

Let's decide on the type of construction and the painting scheme depending on it:

  • The panel door is painted in three steps. It is more practical to use a roller, it will provide uniformity and will not leave hairs. Let's start to cover from the end, more precisely from the upper left corner of the canvas, directing the movements to the right side. So we paint the canvas to the very end, and dry for as many hours as the manufacturer requires. The second step of staining is carried out in the longitudinal direction, and the third in the opposite of the initial step.
  • Let's start painting the paneled door with a brush. We will walk through the grooves in the canvas, trying to avoid an overabundance of paint. Finish painting with a roller, following the steps listed above.

What if you decide to paint with wood stain?

The door prepared for staining needs to be slightly moistened, then the wood will not absorb moisture and the dye with a very liquid consistency will lie flat. Everything that is located horizontally with a stain will be painted first along the fibers, then in the transverse direction, at the finish again longitudinally.

We will begin to cover the shoals and the canvas not removed from the hinges from below so that drops and splashes of dye do not fall on unpainted areas. We do this if we open the door with varnish. If the finish will be an opaque composition, dark drops will not interfere at all.

After treatment with a water-soluble stain, the moisture-absorbed wood fibers are straightened. They will need to be sanded with zero sandpaper after the first layer has dried. Then we will remove dust and cover again.

Note. Dry after staining wooden surface lighter than during the period of application of the dye. Achieve juiciness of color by multiple opening.

Alcohol stain will not stimulate fiber straightening. There is no need to grind the door after processing it and it dries up in half an hour. However, its water-soluble counterpart is considered a safer, absolutely non-toxic dye, and therefore more popular.

How to create a wood imitation correctly

You can imitate a wood pattern literally on any material, for this:

  • paint the canvas with yellow, light gray or light beige paint and dry it to the condition indicated by the manufacturer of the coloring composition;
  • with a brush, cover the entire area to be treated with liquid soap;
  • we apply a layer of a pleasant dark paint and wash off the liquid soap.

For home craftsmen who want to learn how to paint a veneered door with a wood effect or a budget look upholstered with plywood, a different method is proposed. To implement the idea, you will need a specific brush, which is now available in hardware stores. Using a brush-like motion, brush the soft fibers with this brush. We paint the treated surface with dyes of different colors. Due to changes in the structure, curls will spontaneously appear, creating the illusion of wood. After drying, we will grind the surface.

Observing the rules, you can paint or open the door with varnish without any problems yourself. There will definitely not be any special complications along the course. Since the canvas has two sides, it is better to start the trial strokes from the wrong side. Fill your hand, in a similar way it will be possible to restore not only doors, but also cabinets and other wooden and veneered furniture.

When starting a renovation, everyone means changing the interior of their home. One of the elements, the appearance of which will be subjected to changes, are doors. More profitable and economical option there will be no replacement, but the painting of the old one. To do this, you need to know the door, especially since there are no special difficulties in this, and even with your own hands you can easily carry out this procedure. Such skills of a painter will be useful to you in the future and will significantly save part of the family budget.

How to paint old doors

When you decide to paint an old canvas, you will be faced with the following dilemma:

  • paint over old paint;
  • paint with removal of the old layer.

How to paint doors over old paint

Nothing complicated: just take and paint. But before that, you need to be very careful and patch up the cracks in the canvas. For that, you should use a putty. After the puttying process, it is worth sanding the surface with sandpaper. Once you've finished fixing these imperfections, the next step is to wash the surface well and let it dry completely. This is the advice of experienced workers.

How to paint with removing the old layer

In most cases, the paint layer on your door will not last long enough. The reasons may be as follows:

  • paint may crack;
  • burn out;
  • over time, the protective properties of the paint are lost;
  • can inflate.

For any of these reasons, you can use sodium hydroxide, carbolic acid, or potassium.

  • Painting will be faster if your door stays on its hinges, as in this position you can paint on both sides at once. In this case, you do not need to wait for one side to dry.
  • Before painting, you need to clean the surface with a saturated alcohol scrubber. With the help of alcohol, you will get rid of the dirt, and the washcloth will sand. Remove the door handles or cover with masking tape.
  • To start staining is from the top, smoothly dropping down. Do not paint the side, as the wood may expand or shrink when the moisture level changes.
  • Apply one coat of paint, let it dry. For color saturation, apply a second coat of paint.
  • After the paint has dried, you can safely paint the side parts.

Important in the question of how to paint interior door, is correct:

  • grooves should be painted with a wide brush;
  • use a roller for wider areas;
  • paint small details with an angled brush;
  • for simple flat doors, use a wide soft roller.

An independent staining process is not such a difficult task that you can easily solve with your own hands. Moreover, if you paint yourself, you will significantly save your family budget, and thus you will constantly enjoy the fruits of your labors.

Thanks to staining, a new door in an apartment or house can become not only more aesthetically attractive, but also more protected from the influence of environmental factors. The same applies to old doors, because over time, any painted surface loses its former attractiveness, as the paint fades, flakes and bubbles. Painting wooden doors is enough simple job, however, in this matter there are nuances, without understanding which it is difficult to achieve a good result.

Choice of paint

Due to the huge variety of compositions, coloring allows you to give a wooden product almost any look. The paints are transparent, matte and glossy. Moreover, if there is a desire, it is possible to use several types of paint for one door - it all depends on the tasks set, the wishes of the master or designer. Very often, doors are first impregnated with a tinting compound, and only then a decorative coating is applied.

Note! Not all paints and varnishes are compatible with each other. For example, wood stain is suitable for varnish, but not drying oil.

Door paints are produced on the basis of acrylic, polyurethane, alkyds, perchlorovinyl. A very rare and outdated option is oil-based paints. Today even domestic producers refuse them.

It is recommended to use acrylic or alkyd paint for painting doors. Acrylic latex compositions have a suitable consistency for brushing, as well as decent spreading and hiding power (although acrylic paints and varnishes are inferior to oil in this parameter). Alkyd paints are characterized by excellent water-repellent properties, and in addition, they are distinguished by high resistance to temperature extremes, as well as fast drying.

Note! Alkyd colorants can only be applied to perfectly dry wood. If the surface is wet, its adhesive properties will not be sufficient for reliable adhesion to the paint and varnish material, as a result of which the paint will peel off.

The paint has two competitors - varnishes and impregnations. To understand the differences between these compounds, let us briefly dwell on their properties and tasks:

Dyeing technology

Do-it-yourself painting of wooden doors begins with removing the structure from the hinges. After the door is dismantled, we lay it on a flat surface (you can use a table, a couple of stools, etc.).

Note! If alkyd paint will be used, it is recommended that all work be carried out outdoors or indoors where there is a large amount of air.

Next, we block the canvas in such a way that we have free access with a brush to all the necessary elements. The lock is also needed in order to prevent accidental closing of the doors during the period of drying of the surface. If the door is closed, the paint layer may be damaged.

It is also advisable to remove the accessories. If this is not possible, and in the case of non-removable hinges, all parts must be protected from paint ingress. For this, paper is suitable, which can be attached with tape. Better yet, wrap the fittings with foil. It is recommended to seal the locking mechanisms with tape.

Wood surface preparation

To prepare wooden doors for painting, they must first be cleaned, and then treated with a primer and putty.

Below are step-by-step instructions for preparing a wooden surface:

Council number 1. Dents that are too noticeable can be leveled with automotive filler. The choice of this material is dictated by the absence of fiberglass in its composition.

Council number 2. If the wood under the old paint has become too dark, it can be lightened. To do this, we treat the surface with a solution of bleach and water. The ratio of the components in the solution is 1 to 3.

At the end of sanding, we clean the surface of dust with a vacuum cleaner, and then wipe it wood product with a damp cloth.

Dyeing in the usual way

In this part of the article, we will not dwell on tricky methods of staining, for example, artificial aging of the surface, painting or underlining. special methods wood texture. It will be about the usual painting of doors. This must be done with high quality - so that there are no smudges and stains on the surface.

To paint one or two doors, it hardly makes sense to buy a sprayer. Therefore, you can use a narrow paneled brush for paneled canvases, and a roller is suitable for all types of canvases.

Further actions depend on design features doors:

  1. We paint the panel door in three stages. When painting, we use a roller, as it allows you to apply the paint more evenly and does not leave hairs. First of all, we apply paint to the end. From the upper left corner of the end, we move to the right. Thus, we paint the entire canvas, and then dry it in accordance with the instructions from the manufacturer. At the second stage, paint the door lengthwise. Finally, we do everything the same as in the first stage, but from the right corner.
  2. When painting a paneled door, use a brush. We carefully process the surface, not forgetting about the grooves. In this case, excess should be avoided. paint material on the canvas. After the paint layer dries up, we do everything that is indicated in the instructions for painting the panel door.

Working with stain

We slightly moisten a clean door. The stain will work better on a damp surface. We paint first along the fibers, then across. The third layer is again applied in the direction of the fibers.

We process the webs and the canvas (it does not need to be removed) from below so that drops do not fall on a clean surface. This applies to staining with transparent compounds. When it comes to opaque paint, the direction of the paint is irrelevant.

After applying a water-based stain, the fibers rise slightly. Therefore, sanding with a zero sandpaper is necessary. Then remove the dust and apply another layer of stain. Alcohol stain does not raise the fibers. Based on this, it is not necessary to grind the surface after such a stain. The advantage of aqueous formulations is non-toxicity and.

Note! The surface that is not yet dry appears to be darker than it will be when dry. A darker tone is achieved by re-staining.
