Many agree that smoking was common in our daily life. Now it is fashionable to smoke weeps, hookahs, cigarettes, bongs, and some are still preferred to plunge into the atmosphere of the past with an smoking tube. In this article we will talk about what is an authentic smoking pipe, we will deal with this accessory for smoking and we will try to determine which device from the old years is to give preference to this gentleman.

What is a smoking pipe

The smoking tube is a special device intended for smoking tobacco, which is pre-prepared and cut. It was the smoking tube that was the most accessory, with the help of which all humanity was addicted to a detrimental habit. This type of smoking was very popular almost until the middle of the 20th century, until cigarettes and cigarettes were sweated. And although this way of smoking is not very popular, European smoking tubes from the tree still find their true connoisseurs, and are popular in the narrow aristocratic circles of society.

Eastern modification of the smoking tube is a hookah. Only it has a more complex device and is intended for smoking not dry tobacco, but wet tobacco and backed mixtures, smoking stones and creams.

All smoking tubes have a similar device and consist of the following parts:

  • bowl,
  • camera,
  • chubuk,
  • mouthpiece,
  • bite,
  • cervical mouthpiece
  • smoke channel;
  • filter

Each of the parts performs a specific function. But now we will not stop at this.

Before you begin smoking, you must first clean the device from the burnt tobacco and dirt, and only then stuff new. It would seem that the smoking tube is very simple tool and for her smoking, except tobacco, nothing more needs. But it is not. There are many necessary accessories simplifying the process of preparing for smoking, as well as intended to care for this device. These are different stratals, heroes, knives, etc.

For all the existence of a smoking tube, her appearance And the attitude towards it has changed very much. Of the simple and cheap fixture, it turned into part of the image. And this is not a product of mass production with low quality, but an expensive unit product, recently the author's performance. Collecting rare instances is gaining popularity, communities of their connoisseurs are created.

Materials

Everyone who wants to join the culture of smoking tubes should be aware that their varieties are very a large number of. Classify them in the following parameters:

  • manufacturing material;
  • form.

In this article, we describe the materials in more detail from which these devices produce, and what forms are, we will tell the next time.

Wood

Some of the most popular are smoking tubes of wood. So that they serve well and for a long time, it is necessary to carefully approach the selection of wood, from which the tube is made. The type of wood affects not only the strength and form of the device, but also the taste of tobacco smoke. The best wood is Briar, but it is not cheap.

Briar. - It is a dense tree-like thigh between the root and a shrub barrel from the Merserek family. It is best for the Wood of the Mediterranean Briar who grew up on silicon-rich soils. The high silicon content does not allow the tube to burn, and the porous structure of this wood remarkably absorbs moisture, which is formed during smoking. The best copies are obtained from 80-100 summer plants.

Smoking tubes from Briar not only fire-resistant. They have a feature to collect and return the aroma of tobacco, which they smoked in them. This is the taste of the tube, which the device acquires during its operation. How will this taste be, will depend on the quality of wood, the quality of processing, from how often the device is used and, naturally, from tobacco, which smoke.

Cheap smoking pipes produce from pears or beech. Other wood is worse, and coniferous breeds for this purpose are not suitable at all. Cheap smoking tubes can be from different fruit trees, birch or beech, but you should not buy them. Since during smoking, they burn, giving the smoke an unpleasant taste, and the moisture is assembled and follows from the mouthpiece together with resins and ashes.

Sometimes you can meet smoking tubes from Morty. - Moraine oak, launched centuries in peat or clay soil. Such wood is very durable and well suited for such devices. But since the reserves of this material are not big, then for industrial production Morta is not used.

Meerschaum

Excellent material for smoking pipes is a foam (Meerschaum). The word Meerschaum is translated from german language As "marine foam" and well characterizes such qualities like lightness and whiteness. Sepolyoli is called foam - this is a porous mineral white colorThe highest quality is mined in Turkey, near the city of Eskisehir. The foam tubes have the same properties as briar - they are fervor-resistant, weakly thermal conducting and hygroscopic, which is very important for these devices. Due to the high moisture-absorbing ability, the foam tube changes color from white on golden, cherry or brown. It is impossible to guess, after how much time the device will change color - it can pass 2 months and a year. To a greater extent, the frequency and intensity of smoking will be influenced, and to the lesser - the Tobacco variety.

The advantage of the foam tubes in front of the briar in the fact that the device from the foam can be smoking several times a day, while the briar need to dry after each smoking session. But the products from the sepiolite are very fragile and you need to handle it very carefully.

Pumpkin

There is also an smoking tube of pumpkin, which is called Kalabash. Calabash translated from English - bottle pumpkin or gorusta. For a long time, pumpkin tubes with sea foam or porcelain bowls were made, but their creation is very laborious and, today, these devices are very expensive. Therefore, we use a mahogany or briar to create smoking devices, giving them similar shapes, and give them for Kalabash.

The main feature of the pumpkin tube is the presence of an air chamber, which is located below the bowl. In this chamber, the smoke is cooled and softened.

Pumpkin tubes and foam are very similar to functionally, but smoke from Kalabash is much softer and cooler.

Corn

Some of the inexpensive devices are considered smoking pipes from corn. They are made from corn cobs that are pre-dried around 2 years. Then form bowls are formed, immersed in a mixture based on plaster, and then covered with varnish.

Corn tubes do not need mischief, as briar, therefore, it can be recommended for beginners as the first tube. From the disadvantages, it can be noted that they need to dry for a long time, as well as their small lines of operation - in less than two years they go beyond. But, since it is cheap smoking pipes, they can simply be replaced by new ones, because in terms of taste, they are a worthy alternative to the devices from Brianar.

Other materials

Pipes from clay in our time are not popular in terms of smoking, although they are durable and easy to make them. In most cases, such copies replenish private collections. The same applies to porcelain devices.

Metal for tubes is used mainly as finishing or for some details. Smoking devices with a metal bowl are not very comfortable for smoking tobacco, because they are very hot, but for smoking drugs, they can be used.

Also, recently, plastic tubes appeared. But this is a completely inappropriate material for such a device and cannot be used for its intended purpose, they can be bought as souvenirs.

We reviewed only some materials from which smoking pipes are made. But in pursuit of low price, do not forget about your health. After all, the right smoking tube will not cost cheaply, but it will be better to filter tobacco smoke and bring pleasure to the taste of your beloved tobacco.

What makes smoking pipes?

Many people, thinking about the first purchase, most often imagine a smoking tube simply as a kind of wood with mouthpiece. However, coming to the store and see a wide range of tubes, we understand that everything is not so simple as we imagined it. So what do pipes do? What are they?

Clay tubes | Clay Pipes.

Clay, perhaps, is one of the most ancient materials from which the smoking tubes have ever made on the "Big Earth". It is not surprising, since clay products undergo hardening the fire and the temperature of burning tobacco is unlikely to be able to harm the material of the tube.

Tubes from clay do to this day and such tubes have their own circle of fans, but these tubes and a number of significant minuses have: tubes from clay, like many products from it, fairly fragile, besides, they are easily heated and about such The tube can be burning. Sometimes you can find clay tubes with double walls and air layers between them, which significantly reduces the risk of burn.

Also, the mines of smoking pipes from clay include increased humidity of smoking and the absence of such a factor as the "taste of the tube". Nowadays, clay tubes are, in fact, more decorative products, rather than utilitarian. They are more often found in various museums, but in everyday life of the modern smokers, they gave way to tubes from other materials.

Porcelain tubes | Porcelain Pipes.

The chicken tubes from the porcelain are even relatively recently very popular in Europe. In fact, the porcelain in them were only a bowl and sometimes part of the banking, everything else was a flight of fancy wizard. The tubes could be small and neat, and could reach the length of the half meter and more. The porcelain tubes are often painted by hand, but modern porcelain tubes are mostly belonging to the souvenir class.

Foam tubes | Meerschaum Pipes.

Smoking pipes made of foam (Meerschaum, it. - Sea foam) appeared in about the first third of the 18th century. The largest deposits of this mineral (sepiolyite) are located in Turkey and off the coast of Africa. There is also sediments of the sepiolitis and in Feodosia. The foam from different regions is distinguished by density, but in general is a porous and lightweight mineral of almost white. Penka absorbs moisture well and is a heat-resistant material. This, as well as the low thermal conductivity of the sepiolitis, made this mineral popular for the manufacture of smoking tubes. Fake foams during processing, allows you to make tubes of the most unimaginable forms, decorated with figures and patterns, affecting quantity details.

At the turn of the XIX-XX centuries, Tanzanian Penka (Africa) was popular as a material for the manufacture of tubes. The mineral, mined in this region, had sufficient porosity, and at the same time its strength allowed not to "tremble over the tubes." But due to the constant political instability of this region, which brought to interruptions with the supply of minerals, manufacturers were forced to abandon the purchase of sepiolitis in Africa. Then the scene came out of Turkey. It is noticeably softer than the Tanzanian and tube of it are more fragile, but today the tubes from the sepiolitis are considerably popular with smokers.

There are several types of foams on the market, there are tubes from gowns, and two of them are worth talking separately - this is a block and extruded foam. In the first case, the tube is cut out from a solid piece (block) of the mineral. In the second - the foam crumb is pressed, pouring the adhesive substance. Pressing tubes made of extruded foams are much cheaper, but the quality is greatly inferior to tubes from a solid block.

Corn tubes | Corncob Pipes.

Corn tubes are required by their birth to the Dutch artisan, who returned to permanent residence in America. He settled in a small village on the shores of Missouri, thanks to which the phone was called "Missouri Meershaum". Initially, this name was the name of his own who wore and continues to wear a company that produces corn tubes, but gradually "Missuria Peny" began to call everything in a row from corn, making it a nominal name.

The tubes literally make corn cubes that are dried for a long time and from which they are frown. In the middle of the patch, the tobacco chamber is drilled, the letter is inserted with mouthpiece and the tube is ready. Corn tubes are essentially a one-time smoking tool, but their low cost and non-standard appearance make them quite popular among smokers.

You can read more about corn tubes in one of the numbers of our magazine.

Kalabash, pumpkin tubes | Calabash.

Initially, Kalabashi was made (and they continue to be manufactured) from pumpkin, which, during the cultivation, attached the necessary form. The cavity inside the dried pumpkin plays the role of a large air chamber, in which the smoke cools. The same tobacco is smoldering in the chamber, which is made of sea foam or porcelain.

Original Kalabashi are quite large tubes having a U-shaped and characteristic "hat-mushroom" from the insert. Sometimes instead of pumpkins use a tree of various breeds with inserts from a briar or foam. Also, "miniature copies", devoid of air chambers, the original Kalabashi cut out of the foam or briar, repeating the shape of Kalabash. In the structural part, such tubes may have little common with pumpkin tubes, but the characteristic contour lines gave the name of one of the forms of smoking pipes.

In the picture on the left you see just one of these tubes: the excellent work of the Danish Master of Tom Eltang is a tube made from the Briar in the form of Kalabash.

Falcon Pipes.

The smoking pipes called Falcon are hybrid tubes with a metal base with replaceable foam or briar bowls, which are screwed into the base. These tubes are not particularly singled out and are, in general, the next and completed stage of the evolution of smoking pipes.

I deliberately entered the Falcon tube to an article describing the materials used for the manufacture of tubes, and not in the section dedicated to tubing forms. Using the metal design does not allow me to omit the mention of these tubes in this article.

Brian tubes

Briar (Bruyere, BRIAR, etc.) Call a spherical dense thigh from the base of the heather's heather, which goes into the roots. The main regions supplying briar for tubes are Corsica, Algeria, Italy and Greece. Distinctive features Briana is his relative heat resistance. However, new briar tubes need to be delimited - in the process of smoking the tube on the walls of the tobacco chamber, a thin carbon layer is formed - a nagar - which gives additional protection to the tobacco chamber, as well as collecting excessive moisture, resulting during smoking. Well-drying Briar is pretty easy, which allows you to keep the tube in your teeth without much effort. Unless, of course, it is not the magnitude of the house.

With all its density and difficulty in processing, Briar, like any wood, permeated with capillaries, thanks to which the tube can "breathe" - collect and return the taste of tobacco smoking in it. This feature that possess, in general, only smoking tubes from heather, gave rise to the emergence of such a term as the "taste of the tube", which acquires the tube as smoking. What it will be good or bad - depends on the quality of the briar, the quality of the manufacture of the tube, on the degree of bitterness of the tubes and, of course, on the nature of the tobacco smoking in it.

Thanks to its properties, briar. To date, the most popular material for the manufacture of smoking pipes. Many smokers consider it the best, which is quite deserved, and even the only acceptable material for the manufacture of smoking pipes.

POST Scriptum

Nowadays, you can meet smoking tubes from where more Materials than listed in this article: completely made of metal, carbon fiber, made of pressed chips and heat-resistant plastic, from various rocks of fruit and not very tree. Electronic filling of many modern (seeking to become fashionable) tubes, their Hi-tech-design, or vice versa, the desire of all means to simplify it, the production of tubes, gave rise to a large number of "monsters", completely devoid of what we love smoking pipes - their ability to deliver The pleasure of the smoker with its taste and taste of smoking tobacco. If our desires with you are similar, then it seems to me that there is no point in such "crafts" to even pay attention.

The manufacture of truly high-quality tubes is a painstaking process that implies many stages. Today's story is devoted to the manufacture of tubes by Master Alexander Bondarev.

Like many Masters Alexander Selfiece: I looked at other people's work, I was noticed something, I tried something to do something, I had improved something and it was ate in the work. I will not go into technical details, I will not stop in detail on some individual processes. This is all in a blog at Alexander himself, he tells in detail about the processes and pitfalls and does it with the knowledge of the case and with pictures.

Well, I will walk in general places, sketch, so to speak, sketch.

Tubes make from many materials, ranging from clay and stone and ending with corn cube and pumpkin. Although the traditional material is considered to be a tree. There is also a lot of options: cherry, pear, beech, but the best tubes are made from Briar. Briar tubes are also called heers.

Briar is a growing in the rhizome of a heather growing in difficult conditions of rocky soil of the Mediterranean. This thief serves as a tree for the accumulation of water, and together with water absorbs and minerals, becoming very durable and refractory. It is these properties that make Brigar perfect material for the tubes.

Briar is harvested specifically for pipelines. It is cleaned, wash, dried. Proper drying sets the correct properties of wood and its taste. If dried incorrectly, cracks will appear, and if you defect, then there will be no good taste. But the latter is fixable, Briar can ripen and in the form of a finished product.

The billet is attached to the machine twice. For the first time, the Chubuk is pulled out (this is what is found with the mouthpiece), and the second is the bowl itself with a tobacco camera. Moreover, if a ring is used on the tube to decorate the connection location with the mouthpiece, and it is most often used in good tubes, then the installation is occurring directly on the machine with the subsequent mining of the Mortis, the landing site of the mouthpiece. If the ring is placed separately, microscopic cracks in the joint is unacceptable, and this is unacceptable.

The rings are most often made from various varieties of wood, horns, bones or precious metals. For example, in the US, it is impossible to export products from a natural horn and an elephant bone, they are protected by nature there. So you have to replace these parts on acrylic.

Alexandra has a reason for pride: half-and-a-cellogram "piece" of the Mammoth's beyre. His owner lived a long time ago on the territory of Yamalo-Nenets autonomous District, then died, and then the horn found Soviet scientists. And then the scientists found Alexander :)

We continue to rough handling the workpiece. Excessively cut off. Labor protection and safety equipment :)

Rough grinding on a circle. At the upper end of the Chubuk, you can see the very decorative ring, the truth is not from the very mammoth, but from the Samsit.

And here is an unpleasant surprise. A small cavity in the wood array spoils the whole picture. The cavity will most likely fail to run and this tube will not be smooth, but will be consumed. More complicated with cracks. When they are detected, the workpiece most often goes to the emission. But this is a valuable material of the tree, mammoth or bone, and a few hours of work.

Also without the future, billets with caverns inside the tobacco camera remain. In principle, if the cavity is small, then after several months of smoking it will not find it, but it is impossible to sell such a tube, the wizard's reputation will suffer.

Very important stage - drilling smoke channel. First, the channel is drilled to the point of meeting with the tobacco camera, and then the camera is selected. Moreover, the channel must come out exactly at the bottom of the camera. If the bottom of the camera is lower than the channel exit, the tube will not get to the end, which will lead to the resin and the unpleasant taste and smell.

It took about five hours from the beginning of work, and we did only the workpiece. If the spoons were cut, they would call the bunchies. The creative process of giving shape begins on. It is done manually spent time dependent on the shape of the tube. On average, one tube takes three or four full working days.

We will not abuse the hospitality of the owner, so let us return to the finished tube.

Oh, yes, I almost forgot. Mouthpieces. They are also made from various materials, but now ebonite or acrylic is considered to be traditional. Alexander uses a warm lamp ebonite. The cylinder drives the hole under the channel and the pin, which will enter the wooden part of the tube. There, too, accuracy is needed up to 0.2 millimeters on thermal gap.

After grinding, the tube is treated with conventional verses, grind once again, as needed to be treated with versions and shoff again.

With a lacquer tube are not friends, only polished.

Alternating grinding with the procraner, you can achieve a spectacular pattern of fibers of a tree, grains.

Final barcode - print masters.

Each tube is affixed with marking in the form of a master of the master, the date of birth of the tube and its quality. Each pipe has its own scale and at its discretion evaluates the tube.

Each tube is completed with a leather cover. Shoots immediately the same hands.

But the tubes. I like the smooth round in shape more, and someone else will like the knutor. There are generally similar to hemp :)

"No, you do not remove it, these are my working tubes and in general, there is no need to do so do it" :) The master can afford such creative mess. There are no tubes made for yourself, rather, it is a small marriage tube identified at the final stages. For any properties, in addition to aesthetic indicators, such a marriage does not affect, but it is impossible to give it to the customer.

I used to smoke everything. Starting from the crocodile, the genes and ending with Sherlock Holmes, from Carlson (yes-yes) and before Captain Lunned. And Tom Sawyer and Gek Finn? Commissioner Megre, Josef Schweik and other hobbits?

Today's story is not at all about the Ministry of Health and the dangers of smoking, but exactly the opposite - the pleasure of smoking tobacco, or rather, about the wizard that creates tubes for this very tobacocuria.

18. After grinding, the tube is treated with conventional verses, grind once again, as needed to be treated with versions and shoff again.

19. The tubes are not friendly, only polished.

20. Alternating grinding with the procraner, you can achieve a spectacular pattern of fibers of a tree, grains.

21. Final barcode - print masters.24. Each tube is completed with a leather cover. Shoots immediately the same hands.

25. And here is the tube. I like the smooth round in shape more, and someone else will like the knutor. There is generally similar to hemp 🙂

26. "No, you don't remove it, these are my workpipes and in general, there is a mess and do not do it." 🙂 The master can afford such creative mess. There are no tubes made for yourself, rather, it is a small marriage tube identified at the final stages. For any properties, in addition to aesthetic indicators, such a marriage does not affect, but it is impossible to give it to the customer.

27. Healthy after a difficult day to sit in the chair or by the fire in the winter forest, get the tube, plenty, smoke and slowly savoring smoke calmly sit and think about the fragmentation of everything that is. Straight even somehow it's a pity that I threw smoking.

I am very advised to read this post Alexander. He was made shortly before my filming and, if honestly, if I saw it in time, I would not go to visit 🙂 there everything is very detailed and tasty, I recommend.
