Pomelo - what kind of fruit?

Pomelo is an exotic citrus fruit native to China. Also, the pomelo is actively growing in Malaysia, Israel, Vietnam and Thailand.

Pomelo has several names: Pomelo, Pompelmus and Sheddock. By the way, Shedok Pomelo is named after the captain of the ship, the Englishman Sheddock, who brought pomelo seeds to the West Indies in the 17th century from the Malaysian archipelago.

The pomelo fruit is the largest among all citrus fruits. The average weight of a fruit is from one to three kilograms; it is these fruits that are best stored and transported to other countries. Although, on the territory of growth, the weight of the pomelo can reach ten or more kilograms.

Outwardly, the pomelo resembles a grapefruit, while it is somewhat larger, also differing in a softer and more pleasant taste. The fruit is round, slightly elongated towards the stalk, which makes it look a bit like a huge pear.

The fruit is covered with a thick skin, the thickness of which can be up to two centimeters, which ensures high safety of the fruit.

Inside, the pomelo is divided into large slices, wrapped in a harsh film - a partition. Inside the lobules, especially in a ripe fruit, there are seeds, the size of which depends on the stage of ripening of the fruit. The larger the seeds, the greater the stage of ripening, or even overripening, in the fruit.

The taste of pomelo is sour - sweet, with a light, barely noticeable aftertaste of bitterness. It is much sweeter and less bitter than grapefruit, but at the same time has a softer "citrus" taste than oranges or tangerines.

Ripe fruits are pale green to yellow in color. The pulp of the fruit is less juicy than that of other citrus fruits. Also, the juiciness of the fruit depends on its stage of ripening: the younger the fruit, the more juice it contains. Overripe fruit has a "dry" and tough pulp structure, which affects the taste. Due to the dryness of the fruit, it will be extremely difficult to squeeze the juice out of the pomelo.

How to choose a Pomelo

When choosing Pomelo, there are no special secrets and subtleties. It is usually sufficient to carefully examine and touch the fruit to draw a conclusion about its maturity.

At the same time, do not forget that for long-term preservation, and the delivery time from the country of origin to our stores can stretch from several days to several weeks, the fruits, as a rule, are harvested a little immature, processed special means, and clothed in a film or mesh for safety.

However, citrus fruits do not have the ability to ripen, as happens, for example, in tomatoes. Therefore, there is no need to store such citrus at home, in the hope that it will ripen soon.

And so, when choosing a pomelo, you need to pay attention to the following:

  1. Consider carefully the fruit you want to purchase. Its skin should be firm, firm, free of dents, rotten or broken spots, and no thickening. Ideally, if the crust is uniform in color.
  2. Feel the fruit with your hands. If by touch you feel the presence of incomprehensible thickenings on the body of the fetus, or in some places it is pressed under pressure, it is better to refuse such a purchase.
  3. Shake the fruit in your hands. If it seems to you that it is too light, and this can be compared with other specimens of pomelo, this indicates that the fruit is not ripe, and you, most likely, instead of a tasty and juicy citrus, buy a thick crust framing the unripe fruit. The larger and heavier the fruit, the more likely it will ripen, which has a positive effect on the taste of the acquired Pomelo.

The benefits and harms of pomelo for health

How to use pomelo

The use options depend on your fantasies.

Pomelo can be consumed both in a purified form, as a regular tangerine, orange or grapefruit, and can be used in various salads, or when cooking meat dishes, which contain citrus fruits.

Pomelo is often used to decorate ice cream, sherbets, it is great for making fruit fondues (the sour-sweet taste of pomelo goes well with melted chocolate).

Before using the pomelo, you first need to peel it off of the peel and film that covers the pomelo slices.

Cleaning a pomelo is not as difficult as it seems at first glance.

First of all, it is necessary to remove from the fetus protective film, in which each fruit is packed separately.

After that, carefully cut off the upper, elongated part of the fruit with a knife.

Next, you also need to make cuts with gentle movements right along the peel along the entire fruit, as it was done in the photo. If you see that the place near the stalk (elongated top of the fruit) is slightly rotten, or has damage, cut a little more.

In the end, after you have made cuts throughout the fruit, it can be easily peeled off (also see the photo of the pomelo).

After you have peeled off the peel, the fruit easily, or almost easily, breaks into two parts.

To simplify the process, watch the video in which I explain in detail, and most importantly, show how to quickly and easily clean Pomelo.
