The variety of styles and types of curtains is quite diverse. Therefore, it is sometimes very difficult to do right choice... In this article we will talk about what are Roman blinds in the interior, what are their advantages and disadvantages. And also about what to look for when choosing such curtains.

What are Roman Shades?

Already from the name of these curtains it becomes clear that such curtains appeared in the days of the Roman Empire. They were brought to Europe by the Persians. And only at the end of the 18th century did they become widespread and mass-produced. Over the hundreds of years of its existence, the design of Roman blinds has remained practically unchanged. What are they and what do they look like?

Roman blinds are a structure consisting of several elements:

  1. cornice (profile),
  2. shaft,
  3. lifting elements,
  4. fabric cloth.

These curtains have a simple rectangular shape. At the same time, in the assembled state, the curtain has beautiful uniform folds, which are formed thanks to the wooden slats fixed from the seamy side.

The curtains are lowered and raised using a special cord or chain located on the side of the canvas. In this case, from the seamy side, the cord passes through the ring. This makes it possible to fix the curtain fabric at the desired level. This mechanism is quite simple, very reliable and suitable for both light and heavy fabrics. Roman blinds have two sewing options:

  • classic tailoring - in this version, Roman blinds have folds, overlapping one another, only in the assembled state. When unfolded, the curtain looks like a flat cloth;
  • cascading sewing - this version of Roman blinds has folds, both in the assembled and in the straightened position.

Roman blinds: advantages and disadvantages

For a very long time, Roman blinds have found their customers. And this is not surprising. Such curtains cannot but be liked, as they have a lot of advantages! Here we will consider them.

  • Roman shades can be sewn from any fabric, both in density and in color.
  • Such curtains can be sewn on any window, of any size.
  • Curtains of this type can be moisture resistant, so they are hung even on the balcony or in the bathroom.
  • These curtains are compact and do not look as bulky as classic curtains made of heavy fabric.
  • They can be hung even in hard-to-reach places, it all depends on which cornice you choose.
  • Roman shades are easy to wash. This can be done in an automatic washing machine in delicate mode.
  • They are easy to operate by adjusting the required lifting and lowering heights.
  • These curtains serve for a long time without fading under the influence of sunlight.

Roman blinds have several drawbacks that may seem insignificant, but we cannot fail to mention them.

Roman blinds fabric

Roman curtains in the living room look attractive and stylish. Especially if they are hung in combination with other curtains. For example, they are in perfect harmony with translucent and light organza. Such curtains will beautifully complement the curtains that match them in color. You can decorate Roman shades with an original lambrequin at the top or scalloped at the bottom.

The curtains themselves can be sewn from dense fabrics such as brocade, velvet or tapestry. Blackout curtains will help hide the room from the hot daytime sun and in the evening from the prying eyes of passers-by. Translucent Roman curtains made of light fabrics look more romantic and sophisticated in the living room interior, with them the interior will be light and airy. For example, interesting option curtains made of cambric or organza can become. In addition, the fabric for Roman blinds can be chosen both in plain color and with a pattern. It depends on the style and color scheme in which the living room is decorated.

When choosing the color of Roman curtains, they are guided most often by the color of the walls. If you want to focus on the curtains, give preference to curtains a few shades darker or lighter than the wall decoration. If there is a drawing or pattern on the walls, then it is better to choose plain curtains. And so that they do not seem too boring, you can take a textured fabric, for example, jacquard, which looks rich and sophisticated. And vice versa, against the background of plain walls, curtains with a pattern will look great, which will become an accent element. Bright Roman curtains with a pattern look quite interesting in light living rooms, where shades of white are present.

Roman shades and living room style

Curtains of this type are suitable for any interior style. How harmonious they will look depends on which fabric and color you choose. A classic living room is characterized by expensive and dense fabrics. For example these:

  • velvet,
  • tapestry,
  • brocade.

And from organza, such curtains may well decorate the living room of this style.

As for modern living rooms, monochromatic fabrics will be appropriate here, and not with a pattern. For example, for a minimalist living room, you can recommend striped Roman curtains, in which dark and light stripes alternate. Such curtains look especially impressive on wide windows. Due to their laconicism and simplicity, these curtains can organically complement a Provence or country style living room.

Choosing the right roman shades

Undoubtedly, Roman shades are both practical and beautiful. They make the interior of the living room exquisite in daytime and add style to the evening. But this can only be achieved if the curtains are selected correctly. How to do this, there is no definite answer. But we will give some recommendations of designers.

  • For a small living room with little daylight, it is best to choose Roman shades made from light fabrics in light shades. Such curtains will not attract attention and will not visually burden the room. They can be supplemented with transparent organza, which will give the room airiness, freshness and dynamism.
  • In a spacious, large living room, Roman blinds made of dense fabric in combination with the same curtains will be excellent. This will fill the room with coziness and warmth. The interior of the room with such curtains seems to be saturated with peace and tranquility.
  • Roman blinds with a pattern that repeats the pattern of wall decoration can add sophistication to the decor. This combination and design is typical for a classic living room.
  • Lovers of natural fabrics and materials can be advised by roman blinds made of bamboo or linen. This is an environmentally friendly raw material. Therefore, the price of these curtains will be high. Such curtains will fit into the living room in both Japanese and eco style.

Summing up, we emphasize once again that Roman blinds are a wonderful design solution decorate the interior of the living room in an unusual and non-standard way. Despite their long existence, today these curtains have found new life... They are becoming fashionable and popular. The living room seems rather unusual, in which the window opening is decorated with Roman curtains.

In recent years, these comfortable, practical and presentable curtains have firmly established themselves in our home and office interiors, and they are not going to leave them. But, despite their popularity and wide distribution, many people still do not have the correct idea about them, call them "blinds" or confuse them with roller shutters and rolls. What are Roman blinds, how they look and where they are used, we will figure it out in this article and start with the history of their origin.

History of appearance

Greek curtains first appeared about 2,000 years ago and have not changed much since then.

There are several versions of how Roman curtains first appeared in the interior, they are also called Greek curtains or Roman curtains. All of them look quite reliable and are associated with events that took place more than 2,000 years ago in Ancient rome and no less ancient Greece.

According to one of the versions, the canvases, initially dense, gathering upward in even horizontal folds, were used as sails on ancient Roman warships. Then one of the sailors began to close the windows in their house with them. This idea was taken up by his neighbors. Gradually, the innovation spread throughout Rome.

According to another version, the first lifting curtains in the form of huge awnings were invented to protect spectators of gladiatorial battles in the Colosseum from the sun. When the stadium was empty, the tents were folded into folds using strong, thick ropes. Well, then, one of the spectators picked up the idea, and began to use the same, but smaller structures to protect from sunlight on the windows in their house.

But most historians agree that the lifting structure of Roman blinds was invented by housewives. Trying to protect their houses from the street dust that flew into the windows and keep the rooms cool on a hot, sultry day, they moistened the canvases hung on the windows with water. This made the fabric heavy and difficult to lift. The screed systems came to the rescue, allowing, if necessary, to quickly and easily pick up the fabric over the window opening.

How are Roman shades arranged

As you can see in the photo of a classic Roman shade, it consists of:

  • rectangular textile or non-woven fabric;
  • strips-rods (cords), fixing folds;
  • weighting lower bar;
  • drawstring pocket into which the strips are inserted;
  • lifting mechanism.

At the same time, the mechanism for Roman blinds can be both classic manual and modern - electric with a control panel. It can often be purchased as a choice, separate from the curtain. Naturally, the electric drive significantly increases the cost of the entire structure.

Like most lifting curtains, modern "rims" are rectangular canvases made of fabric, PVC or bamboo straw, fixed to a cornice and raised and lowered using a chain or rope mechanism. The device of Roman blinds is distinguished by the presence of strips inserted into the canvas every 30-40 cm. They fix the folds and give them a geometrically even, straight shape. In some varieties, there are no intermediate strips, with the exception of the lowest - weighting one.

Until the very top, the Roman curtain does not rise: approximately 25-40 cm of fabric always remains lowered from the cornice, therefore, when raised as much as possible, the Greek curtains resemble a lambrequin. If the canvas is completely lowered, its length will reach the windowsill, but if you wish, you can sew it yourself or order designer products with a floor length.

In modern design, there are several options for Roman blinds. They are combined in a general way control, when the curtain is lifted with a chain or cord, collecting in horizontal folds, fixed on any comfortable height and lowered, straightening it into an even canvas, and differ in the type of fold formation. Thanks to such a variety, there is always a suitable option for every interior style.

The main models of Roman blinds are as follows:

  • Classic. Equipped with a rigid frame made of wood or plastic slats. The folds are even, when lifting, they are superimposed on one another, when lowering, they form an even canvas.
  • Frameless. There are no horizontal rods in these models, so the folds on them sag in a smooth wave towards the center.
  • Cascading or, as they are also called, slouchy roman blinds. Even in a fully opened form, the canvas consists of a cascade of volumetric horizontal folds, fixed from the back of the curtain with a thick tape.

Rims with a curly bottom, with a piping or bottom edge, decorated with bugles, braid, tassels or some other curtain decor have a more complete and presentable look.

Recently, another model has appeared - a double roman blind or "Day-Night". It consists of two independently controlled canvases: dense and transparent. Natural lighting is regulated by moving them relative to each other and fixing them in a certain position. During the day, the dense canvas is raised, and a light flux enters the room through the transparent part of the curtain. In the evening, the dense part is lowered, and the room becomes dark. If desired, both parts can also be raised or lowered completely. And the most popular today are double Roman blinds with an electric drive, but they also cost an order of magnitude more expensive than similar products with manual controls.

Before choosing Roman blinds, clearly imagine in what interior style the room is decorated, where they are supposed to be hung. Only then can you choose the right type of them and harmoniously fit into the situation.

Advantages and disadvantages of Roman blinds

As mentioned above, Roman blinds, the description of which first appeared more than 2,000 years ago, have not yet lost their popularity, and their design has not undergone any significant changes. This circumstance is the best proof of their merits, tested not even for centuries, but for millennia. And so: the Roman blind and its pros and cons.

Advantages:

  1. Versatility. With the correct selection of the material of manufacture and type (classic, frameless, cascading, double) rims can be selected for any interior and for premises for any purpose, from residential or office to industrial.
  2. Compatibility. All roller blinds go well both with varieties from their group, and with sliding curtains and lambrequins. This property is actively used by designers all over the world, sometimes creating unique author's interior solutions.
  3. Ergonomic Thanks to the lifting mechanism, Greek curtains are easy to use. And even in cases when they look ceremonial and, possibly, pompous (for example, cascade options), they take up a minimum of space.
  4. Diverse design. Such a design is permissible from any woven and many non-woven materials, which in turn, as mentioned above, makes it possible to use it in rooms of any functionality. The sizes of rims are also not limited by anything. On panoramic windows, their maximum width can reach 3 or more meters, and mini Roman blinds, from 30 cm wide, are hung on small narrow windows.
  5. Mounting versatility. You can fix all types of Roman blinds on a window sash, window opening, inside a window opening, on a wall or ceiling. This feature further expands the range of their application.

disadvantages:

  1. The window can only be used when the curtain is up. So, if it becomes necessary to look out the window or ventilate the room, and the canvas is lowered, you will have to raise it completely. True, this drawback does not apply to cases when Roman blinds are attached to the sash of a plastic window.
  2. Since the lifting system of rimoks is identical to the opening-closing system of blinds and roller shutters, they are very often called that - Roman blinds on plastic windows or roman rolls. It is clear that it takes longer to lower and raise them than to move them apart and draw classic curtains towards each other.
  3. Sometimes, when lifting the panels, not all folds fit as smoothly as we would like and they have to be corrected.

It is easy to assume that Roman faults are relative and inconsequential. It is not so often necessary to use window sashes, to open and close them during the day, mainly in the morning and in the evening, and a couple of uneven folds, even if they are not corrected, are unlikely to spoil the appearance of the room.

When is it advisable to use Roman-style curtains?

The diverse design and versatility of Roman roller blinds make it possible to use them at will, almost without restrictions. They are appropriate in any setting. But there are cases when it will not be possible to hang classic long curtains, since they will interfere and lifting curtains become not a whim, but a necessity, namely:

  • under the window there is a built-in storage system or refrigerator;
  • a couch, bed or table is located close to the window;
  • the window sill is used as a table or extra bed;
  • the kitchen window is placed in working area and underneath is a table, sink or stove;
  • input or interior doors equipped with glass inserts and they need to be closed and decorated in the same style as window openings;
  • there are many windows in the room and the use of classic long curtains on each of them leads to an overabundance of textiles in the interior;
  • small children and animals love to play with long curtains, which not only spoils the appearance of the curtains, but is also unsafe for the "gamers" themselves.

In all these cases, feel free to choose roman blinds for plastic windows. They will become the best solution of all possible.

All of the above can be attributed to any lifting curtains, therefore, when choosing a window design, we often face the question of what is better than Roman curtains or roller blinds and what is their difference.

Rims and roller shutters on one window - beautiful, practical, functional

The decision depends only on your vision of the room's furnishings, since in terms of convenience, functionality, mounting and control methods, they are approximately the same.
