Mint kitchen in the interior. Mint color in the interior

Hey! I continue the column on color combinations in the interior. And today the choice fell on the mint color. In general, as it turned out, the topics of color combinations are so extensive that it is simply impossible to describe in one article all the nuances and features for all rooms at the same time. There will be too much information. So I'll start with mint cuisine today. The kitchen, in general, is practically the only room where most people still decide to actively use color. At least all my acquaintances, the owners of beige living rooms, have chosen kitchen facades of active, bright colors. Therefore, the information that I will tell you about today will definitely come in handy for someone.

Mint color

So, mint color. What is this anyway? What does he look like? The peak of the color's popularity was 5 years ago, around 2010-2012, everyone literally went crazy over it. Then it was replaced by a bright turquoise, and they forgot about mint for a while. And not so long ago, he again riveted my attention, when the unusual and very daring set of Gilda Ambrosio in lingerie style got into the lens of photographers at Paris Fashion Week. Looking at him, I can only think of one thing: how could this color live on the shelf? At least now, when the mass craze for pastels has subsided a bit, the adherence to mint will only emphasize your individuality.

So what kind of mint is he? It is something between blue and green, very light and delicate. Not as intrusive as turquoise. Not as juicy as green. Next to them, but much more delicate and refined. And from him literally breathes freshness.

Unsurprisingly, both designers and housewives fell in love with it. And mint-turquoise refrigerators have become almost a cult item. But despite all the seeming friendliness, it is quite cunning when used in interior design. Let's figure out today what to do if you have chosen it as the main color of your kitchen.

5 options for kitchen design in mint color

First, a tub of refreshing greenery. Option HOW NOT TO decorate a mint interior.

It would seem that the perfect combination with achromatic colors (achromatic - colorless: white, black, gray), checkerboard tiles on the floor, which works flawlessly in almost any interior. Why did you get such a dubious result in this case? And it also scares me that this photo on Pinterest was pinned by more than 10 thousand people, and, probably, spread on the network as a role model, thousands of likes have been collected. Well citizens, this mint kitchen has just a disgusting design! And at the end of the article I will definitely tell you why nothing worthwhile came out.

In general, if you are partial to this color, then you have 5 options for using it in the kitchen.

1) Kitchen fronts in mint color

The most obvious solution is when you want to add a lot of color, when you don’t agree to any compromises in the form of accessories. Here you should definitely pay attention to the following, nothing else mint in your kitchen should be... No chairs or curtains to match the facades. Spoil the whole experience. Maximum - jars for spices or other trifle, but necessarily more saturated than cabinets in color. Even pictures are better to take a different color.

Facades of the same color look great and the option when the upper and lower cabinets are different. This technique is still quite relevant. And personally, I like matte options more, glossiness on such large areas will forgive mint. Also note the brass handles, hinges and taps. Blue, turquoise and mint are simply created to combine with yellow metals, playing in the contrast of warm and cold.

2) Mint walls, ceilings and floors in the kitchen

Walls are another option when you want a lot of color, when it is used not in the form of inclusions, accents, but as the main shade of the room. Large originals may dare to paint the ceiling and even the floor.

3) Mint kitchen apron

Especially good in combination with white fronts. And I, although an amateur, in this case recommend taking a light one. Dark for such a delicate color is too rough. Due to the gloss, the tiles become like ice cubes, as a child I thought that this is what the Snow Queen's castle looks like. Be sure to keep this in mind, and if your kitchen faces the north side, then weigh everything 100 times.

4) Individual items of mint color: chairs, refrigerator, door, lighting

This is an option for those who do not have the courage to spot large colored spots in their home, but have no strength to live in solid beige. Mint will be a great solution for accent points. Colored household appliances are usually not the most budget solution, if you cannot afford it, then absolutely everyone can afford a can of paint. Repaint old chairs or doorjamb, none of your acquaintances certainly has this. Do not listen to those who say that doors should always be the same color as the floor, let their houses be decorated according to these dull rules.

But! There is one thing, but if you have chosen this path, then you must stop in time. There should be no more than three items and preferably slightly different shades. For example, chairs and a vase. Light fixture and cutting board. Doors and kettle.

Here already on the brink. Tone-on-tone things are too carefully matched to each other (stove, extractor hood, refrigerator, something on the table). Saves the second shade of mint on the legs of the stool and stripes on the island.

5) Mint dishes

It's too cool not to be highlighted as a separate item. You can create real masterpieces in your kitchen by arranging plates and cups beautifully. Do not dissolve the collection evenly over the entire space of the room, collect everything in one prominent place.

Debriefing

And now, as I promised, I will return to the very kitchen where the interior did not work out and explain why it happened. I will duplicate the photo to make it easier to look at. Initially, the room had good potential: high ceilings, an excellent checkerboard floor, a cool refrigerator, neutral facades with which you can do whatever ...

But, as it turned out, this is not enough for a classy interior and only three mistakes nullified all the advantages.

  1. The owners, unfortunately, could not stop in time. It is noticeable that the items were specially carefully selected in tone to match and evenly distributed over the entire area: refrigerator, high chair, chandelier, curtains, plates, picture, towels, soap dispenser, jars to the left of the sink, something on the dining table ... As a result, there are no separate focus points, the gaze wanders chaotically from one green object to another, because they equal in brightness and argue with each other who is more important.
  2. What kind of green lighting ??? Yes, on white walls. Generally speaking, the correct ones are not an easy task. Here you can clearly see how terrible they can be. The green light turned the white walls into a perfect crypt. It's even cold to look at it. I can imagine how unappetizing food looks in green lighting.
  3. The balance of warm-cold is disturbed with a clear bias towards the latter. This makes the room look uncomfortable. This is the cunning of the mint color. Yes, it is ideally combined with achromatic ones, almost all the examples that I gave today are exactly the same: mint surrounded by white, gray and black in different proportions. But! and this is fundamentally important, there mint was always balanced by warm colors, which, perhaps, did not immediately catch your eye.

Almost necessarily present natural wood in one form or another. These are countertops, chairs, shelves, cutting boards, floors, beams on the ceiling, wicker dishes. This little nuance brings just enough warmth so that the final result does not resemble a giant freezer... So my final recommendation looks like this:

If you decide to decorate your kitchen in mint colors at home, be sure to balance the palette with warm colors.

Various wooden surfaces, furniture, wicker lampshades, baskets, mats, cutting boards, spatulas, etc. are ideal for this. And if your windows face north, then it is better to abandon the idea of mint walls and facades altogether, limiting ourselves to individual objects.

What do you think about the use of this color in the interior? Have you faced any difficulties?

See you!

P.S. I forgot to add, they always look great with mint houseplants due to contrast in saturation and a warmer shade of green. They complement each other perfectly, giving the room more depth and volume, like the play of light and shadow on one subject.

  • mint shades give coolness and are perfect for rooms located on the south side of the building, in the windows of which the sun shines most of the day;
  • mint color goes well with many other shades and basic (neutral) colors - white, gray, beige, brown.

The combination of mint shades with other colors in the interior

It is easy to combine the mint tone in the interior with the main colors, which often act as a background, neutral and unobtrusive. But the shades of mint themselves can serve as the main color of the decoration of the room, slightly diluted with other tones, mainly as an accent. The only thing that must always be remembered is that the mint color is a mixture of blue and green (slightly diluted with whitewash), which means it belongs to the group of cold shades. If you are not pursuing the goal of creating a cool image for a room that is constantly flooded with sunlight, then you need to dilute the mint shades with flowers from the warm palette segment.

Combination of mint and white- universally. Delicate shades are suitable for decorating any room. A light image can be used in a bedroom and a children's room to create a light and fresh design for a kitchen or living room, even in utilitarian spaces, this approach in design will be appropriate. A visual increase in the volume of the room and an ideal background for placing furniture and decor as accent elements will be provided to you.

The mint color can be easily paired with all shades of gray. Gray can be safely considered neutral, on a par with shades of white. In the combination of gray and mint, there is enough restraint and nobility that it can be used in the interior of any stylistic direction: the gray-mint union looks harmoniously both in modern style and in the traditional image of the premises.

The entire palette of beige goes well with mint tones. The contrast between cold and warm colors allows you to create original, but not flashy images of the premises. Such combinations can be used equally effectively in the living room and bedroom, as well as in the kitchen space or utilitarian premises.

An incredibly fresh, spring look can be created by using a combination of mint color with various shades of orange (coral) - from peach to terracotta. It is not difficult to distribute the intensity of the main and auxiliary shades - for finishing small rooms, choose pastel shades, and use bright colors as accents. In rooms with a large area and panoramic windows, deep saturated shades can be used for wall decoration (at least one accent).

A similar effect can be achieved by combining shades of mint with hot pink and fuchsia. As a rule, such combinatorics are used when decorating girls' rooms. Dilution of mint and pink colors with snow-white surfaces allows you to create cool, original and bright, but at the same time easy-to-perceive images of the premises.

The mint color goes well with all types of wood. Contrasting the mint coolness with the natural warmth of the wood pattern always leads to a harmonious combination in the design of the most different premises... It is noteworthy that the combination wooden surfaces with mint color can be used in almost any stylistic direction of interior design - from strict classics to trendy modern trends, from eclectic full of details to laconic minimalism.

The use of mint color in the design of various rooms

As mentioned above, the mint color can be used in the design of a wide variety of premises. Currently, this color is actively used in the production of finishing materials, furniture, textile solutions and decorative elements. All you need to do is decide whether the mint color will be chosen as the background of the room (unobtrusive pastel shades are suitable), will become the tone of the accent surface (you can use a rich color or a bright print), will be represented by furniture (for example, upholstery upholstered furniture or the execution of storage systems) or decorative elements (window drapes, decorative pillows on the sofa or sleeping place).

Living room

In the living room, the mint color is most often used for wall decoration. It can be either a light, pastel shade chosen for the decoration of all walls, or a rich and even bright mint tone, which has become a color solution for one accent surface. Depending on the intensity of the selected shade, you can also select furniture for the living room recreation area. Light furnishings, coupled with light mint shades, create a delicate and light look, perfect for a small living room. Dark furnishings will contrast against the background of mint walls, creating a dynamic and non-trivial image of the room.

But not everyone decides to use mint color as the main tone of the finish, even light shades. But applying this fresh green-blue hue to the textile decor of the living room will not be difficult. It can be drapery for windows (curtains and curtains, plain or with a print), execution sofa cushions and even the upholstery of the main upholstered furniture - a sofa and armchairs.

Bedroom

In the bedroom, a light mint shade is most often used to create the background of the entire room, i.e. for wall decoration. This design method is suitable even for small rooms - a light and light image fits perfectly into the atmosphere of rest and relaxation. If the room is located on the south side of the building, then you can use white as a companion to light mint shades - a cool palette visually "knocks down" the color temperature. If the bedroom is located on the northern part of the building, then it is better to use warm colors wood (for furnishing, flooring) to balance colors and bringing more warmth and comfort to the interior of the room.

If the bedroom has very modest dimensions and flaws in architectural design and it is impossible to use any other color besides the white finish color scheme, then for the mint tone, local performance can be distinguished. It can be textiles on windows, decoration sleeping place, lighting fixtures, carpeting or decorative items.

Children's room

The mint color is able to have a beneficial effect on the child's psyche, it does not irritate the eye, it has soothing and relaxing qualities. Therefore, it can be equally effectively used both in a room for an active child who needs help in calming down and preparing for bed, and in a nursery for a calm baby, even a newborn - it all depends on the intensity of the shade. To decorate a room, it is better to use a light mint or grayish-mint color, which creates an almost neutral background to effectively emphasize the beauty of furniture, textile design, and decor.

Kitchen and dining room

In the kitchen, the mint color can most often be found in the execution of the facades of the furniture set. Considering that most of the kitchen space is occupied by storage systems, the color of the facades largely shapes the image of the room, its character, and color temperature. Light mint shades are suitable for country-style kitchens, shabby chic. Stronger mint tones are also commonly used in modern kitchens.

If you are not ready for the entire kitchen set to be performed in a mint color, stop at only one tier of cabinets (top or bottom) or make a dining group, an island or a bar counter in a fresh green-blue tone.

But even as a background for a furniture set in a kitchen space, the mint color is excellent. A fresh and light look in the kitchen will be provided by a combination of mint finishes and light kitchen facades... If kitchen cabinets have the color of natural wood, the whole interior will look harmonious, filling the atmosphere of the room with warmth and comfort.

Bathroom

In the bathroom, the mint color looks more than appropriate - fresh, cool, reminiscent of the color of the ocean on a sunny day. To create an atmosphere in which you can not only carry out the necessary water procedures, but also truly relax, take a break from the bustle of the city, mint color can be used both as the main color for decorating walls and for decorating accent surfaces.

Auxiliary premises

Mint color in the hallway or hallway, space near the stairs or on the veranda? Why not. Considering that ancillary rooms in most homes do not have windows, light mint shades as a background finish are becoming a difficult option, but a solution that will help create a fresh, unobtrusive image of utilitarian spaces. Snow-white ceiling, light mint walls and dark flooring will help to create an interior in which, in addition to a light and eye-friendly image, you can create a visual increase in space, which is an urgent issue for small-sized rooms.
