Homemade mattress - sewing, use of natural materials. Do-it-yourself foam mattress is an interesting and exciting process How to make a spring mattress for a bed yourself

With current prices, it is much easier and cheaper to sew a mattress with your own hands than to go to the store for an expensive product with the same parameters. The cost of a manufactured product is high, and the price of fillers that are required for sewing a structure is cheaper. What should be placed in a large number so it's time.

DIY foam mattress

People no longer sleep on straw mats and mattresses, preferring comfortable orthopedic products. The mattress has become an indispensable attribute of any bedroom. Methods of sewing mattresses are improving every year, because manufacturers strive to meet all the requirements of buyers. The question of how to sew a mattress yourself is only gaining relevance. If the store is not able to offer a product with the required parameters, the mattress can be sewn with your own hands, having basic sewing skills and a lot of free time. First, you should familiarize yourself with the recommendations of specialists and look at several patterns.

Selection of foam rubber for a mattress, material density index

Polyurethane foam is considered the optimal filler for homemade mattresses. PU foam is also called foam rubber. Synthetic material has several varieties. It differs among themselves in terms of elasticity, density and stiffness. Other characteristics can also be taken into account. A foam mattress is suitable as a base for a sleeping place, because it is able to quickly restore its previous shape and has the necessary elasticity and softness. Main characteristic material - density, which determines the quality of the foam rubber. The indicator is in the range of 25-40 kg / m3, and when marking the manufacturer uses Latin letters and numbers that indicate the stiffness index.

For sewing foam mattresses, you should use material with the following markings:

  1. VE - HR. Highly elastic foam rubber is used for the manufacture of luxury products and furniture sets. The model is recommended for use when creating a foam mattress with your own hands and other bedding. The latex filler guarantees proper back support, it is elastic and soft enough.
  2. El. High rigidity material. able to withstand a load of 100 kg (El-2240). The cost is acceptable with a service life of 5 years. El-2242 is more wear-resistant and durable, its service life reaches 10 years.
  3. ST. Standard Material with a density of 25 kg / m3 and above. It is usually used in the manufacture of products for children.

Preparation of materials and tools

To make a foam mattress with your own hands, you will need the following materials and tools:

  1. Dense and high-quality foam rubber, before buying which you should check for the presence of the appropriate marking. For the material, you will need to make a frame of the appropriate size. Such manipulations will help to keep the original shape of the product longer, increasing the service life.
  2. The material markings VE - HR and El can be used in the manufacture of the filler. The inner niche in the box is filled with foam rubber, after which additional layers are added based on coconut coir and others. Thus, the orthopedic properties of the product are improved. Preference should be given to solid pieces of padding polyester, which will be the same size as the future sleeping place. If it is not possible to purchase a large piece of filler, it is permissible to use several smaller pieces.
  3. Adhesive composition. It will be needed to connect separate layers of fillers, to glue the elements of the box. You will need a specialized compound that is used to glue layers of foam rubber. One of the purchase options is Sefox. The composition is recognized as safe, has no foreign odors and perfectly holds the material together. The gun will be needed to evenly distribute the adhesive mass.
  4. Before making a foam mattress with your own hands, you should take care of purchasing the material from which the cover will be made afterwards. Viscose, cotton, calico, linen or any other fabrics, but only natural, can be used as such material.

Of the tools you will need: a sewing machine, knife, scissors, tape, centimeter, tape measure.

Making a mattress

After all the tools and materials are found, you can start sewing a mattress for the bed with your own hands. Step-by-step instruction will look like this:

  1. To begin with, you should measure the bed and decide on the size of the future mattress.
  2. Then you can start assembling the frame. The design is necessary in order to exclude possible displacement of the filler to the sides and keep its shape well. To do this, you need dense foam rubber 10 cm thick. In accordance with the dimensions of the frame, bars are made, laid on a clean and even surface in the shape of a rectangle. The elements are glued together with glue, the composition must be sprayed at the joints.
  3. The filler is laid. When using one large piece of filler 15 cm thick, it is enough to adjust the fabric to the dimensions of the frame.
  4. When using several unequal filler elements, additional manipulations will be required. If you do not fasten the foam rubber elements together, then over time they will creep and the structure will lose appearance... For this, a protective (bonding) layer is applied based on the adhesive used. The material is sprayed over the entire surface of the layer, after which it is attached to the auxiliary layer. As such, coconut coir, polyurethane foam can be used. The result of such work will be a durable structure with orthopedic properties. The surface will be characterized as hard. No less comfortable will be a mattress consisting of two layers of struttofiber and a foam layer between them.
  5. It is difficult to find foam rubber of the required thickness in the free sale, but it will not be difficult to find a thin one. The way out is simple - to glue several layers of polyurethane foam together.

How to sew a mattress cover

In order to make a mattress cover at home, you will need: a sewing machine, threads and a piece of fabric. After the control measurement of the assembled frame with the placed filler has been carried out, you should start cutting out the individual elements of the cover. The allowance on each side will be 4 cm, which will be needed for the seams. The cover should fit snugly on the mattress, but not overtighten (deform) it. This will help give the structure additional resilience and strength.

It is impossible to do this on your own, so you will need outside help. At the final stage, one of the sides will be closed with a pre-sewn zipper. It is not recommended to use buttons. When manufacturing the cover, it is recommended to use only natural fabrics that are incapable of causing an allergic reaction. Such an element is equipped with a zipper, but it is not removable. It is used as a protective element designed to protect the main structure from contamination. If necessary, a removable mattress cover is made separately.

After sewing the product, it will not be superfluous to ventilate the mattress. This will help get rid of foreign odors. Anyone who has sewing skills can make a mattress based on foam rubber with their own hands. Only high-quality materials are used as a filler.

Orthopedic mattress made of pillows with your own hands

It is a pleasure to use such a hand-made product. A compact mattress is conveniently placed in a cabinet niche, provided that its use is not expected in the near future. In order to make a high-quality mattress from pillows you will need:

  • five or more pillows of the same size;
  • several meters of durable fabric, non-marking, as frequent washing will change the appearance of the product that is placed on the floor covering.

In the absence of the required number of pillows, the elements can be made independently from polyurethane foam (PPU). You will also need cutting scissors and a clipper. A table or other work surface should be spacious. If possible, you can use the floor in the room.

Sequencing

The work surface is pre-washed and dried. The selected piece of fabric is spread on the cleaned surface. It is more convenient to work on the floor because there is a lot of free space and you can lay out the necessary accessories and tools nearby. In order to do orthopedic mattress do it yourself, you need five pillows. You also need to purchase a 2-meter piece of fabric. On the right edge of the unfolded matter, pillows are laid in a row. By folding a piece of fabric in half, the pillows will be covered.

The workpiece is connected by means of threads or needles. Carefully remove the pillows. A product that has an indent along the edges will look more accurate. After turning and stitching, the seams will not be visible. The edges are sewn with a sewing machine. The material is smoothed from the upper front side, after which the distance is measured for each of the pillows using a ruler. The marks are applied to the fabric in the form of lines. The sections must be the same size. The seam is made on the front side along the previously outlined line. The pillows are placed in the manufactured compartments.

In order for a handmade product to look attractive, small buttons can be sewn onto the edges. Thus, the material will be securely fixed, and the shell will be removable, which will allow you to wash at a convenient time. The structure is foldable and mobile. This DIY orthopedic mattress can be moved around the house and stored on a shelf.

DIY transformer mattress

There is also another option for creating a transformer mattress with your own hands. For this, several pillowcases are used, which are sewn together. You can use fabric and batting as a filler. The sides with buttons or zippers should be on the same side. After placing the pillows inside the structure, the product is considered finished. Especially such products are liked by children who like to build houses and play there for hours. Mobility and low weight will allow you to do without the participation of an adult, which is important. Adults can rest on this mattress at night. You should not put the structure in the crib, since the product does not have sufficient orthopedic properties.

Making a mattress using natural materials

Before making a mattress with your own hands, you should take care of the availability of such materials:

  • adhesive composition;
  • fabric for sewing a cover;
  • filler (the material must be sufficiently elastic);
  • sewing machine and other sewing accessories.

In most cases, a whole piece of foam rubber is used as a filler. A layer of coconut coir or polyurethane foam will improve the orthopedic qualities of the mattress. A moderately hard surface is more comfortable for the spine. It is also possible to use a struttofiber for making mattresses for a crib. In this case, the foam rubber layer will be on one side, and coconut fiber on the opposite side. You will also need a cover. For the manufacture of the structure, natural (breathable) fabrics are used. Flax or coarse calico is used most often. Upcoming manipulations

Before proceeding with the upcoming manipulations aimed at sewing the mattress, you should measure the dimensions sleeping place... At this stage, a tape measure is used, after which the frame is assembled. As a base, use dense polyurethane foam 5-10 cm thick. We sew a mattress 15 cm thick. Smaller thickness baby mattress will cause discomfort to a child or an adult, depending on the purpose of the structure (play or for recreation). Dimensional accuracy is important, so measurements are taken several times.

The quality of the materials used will determine the indicator of comfort and stability of the future structure. Next, the filler is laid. When using a single piece, a sharp knife (clerical or shoe) is used to adjust the material to the dimensions of the frame. It is necessary to cut an even fragment. If several sheets of foam rubber are used, then the individual elements are glued together with a special glue.

How to sew a cotton mattress

Cotton wool is considered a traditional mattress filler, but not the best. The porosity of the material is high. It is not possible to save the indicator, since it does not have sufficient elasticity. Before stitching a mattress (for children or adults) from cotton wool, you should think about additional layers that are devoid of the listed disadvantages. For a child, such structures cannot be used as a bed, since they do not have orthopedic properties. Sewing a mattress topper is not difficult, it is much more difficult to fill the structure with the selected filler.

Sequencing:

  1. It is necessary to decide on the dimensions of the future structure. After that, individual elements are cut out of durable cotton fabric. A tolerance is made for seams of 5 cm, which are tucked in and cut off. One of the ends is left open.
  2. Cotton wool is laid in thin layers, each piece is pressed. The surface should be uniform. The next layer is laid on top of the previous one until the required thickness is reached.
  3. The interlayer is stitched with free seams. Only very thin layers hold well.
  4. The cover can be turned inside out and assembled. Cotton wool is folded in a free roll.
  5. The end of the roll is applied to the sewn-on end of the cover. The corners are inserted into the mattress cover, after which the roll is covered with a cover. It is difficult for one to do this. Care should be taken to have an extra pair of hands.
  6. The free ends are sewn. This is done using a sewing machine.

None of us can imagine how one can indulge in sleep and rest on bare ground or on a hard wooden bed. Modern man is accustomed to the fact that his body should lie on a soft base of one kind or another.

Most of the time, we sleep on a mattress. Today we will reveal the secret of how you can make a mattress using various natural or artificial materials with your own hands.

If even in the last century the basis of this product was mainly made up of various fillers of plant or animal origin, then in a modern mattress the main component is a spring. It is she who provides comfort and convenience.

All kinds of this wire element can not be found in modern beds. Each manufacturer is constantly striving to prove that it is his development that most fully takes into account the characteristics of human forms and allows the body to take the most advantageous position in terms of rest.

And the number of enterprises producing these products for the modern market is growing. The most responsible of them really spend a lot of money on studying the features of the operation of springs of various shapes, select their optimal ratio per unit area, experiment with various artificial and natural fillers.

Making a mattress using natural materials

At the same time, one of the main negative aspects associated with limiting the consumption of new generation mattresses is their rather high price. We bring to your attention a budget option products that can be made by hand for a private house or summer cottage, using both traditional and not entirely traditional, or materials forgotten over time.

We start the process of making a mattress with a fabric base - a cover of a certain size, which we will fill in the future. A sufficiently strong fabric must be prepared for sewing the casing. Moreover, it can be both traditional white, and any other, since the operation of the mattress is often carried out using bed linen.

From the prepared fabric, make a pattern for the details of the future. homemade product... It will consist of two completely identical rectangular parts, the dimensions of which will depend both on the size of the people who will use the product and on the type of bed. Recall that modern stocks are divided in width into single, one-and-a-half and double. Based on this, cut out the upper and lower halves of the mattress. In addition to them, prepare one or more narrow strips, the width of which will determine the height of the product, and the total length should not be less than the perimeter (the sum of the lengths of the sides) of the rectangular parts.

The cut parts must be connected together. To do this, first grind them with pins,

Sweep and stitch with high strength threads. It is best to first perform this operation manually, securely fixing the parts to each other in order to avoid their mutual displacement.

This is necessary to achieve high quality work. A strong thread will help to achieve maximum wear resistance of the joints of the fabric and the entire product as a whole. Of the most commonly used, it is possible to recommend using a linen seam for these purposes.

Don't try to put all the pieces together. Remember to leave one short side unstitched. You will need it to fill the mattress. It is best to make a neckline in this part, which can be locked with a zipper or buttons.

Traditionally, the mattress assumes the most lush shape possible. To achieve this goal, a large list of different materials can be recommended for use. Remembering the fairy tale about the princess and the pea, try filling our product with down or feathers. Given his required amount and the price of such materials, the cost of such a product will many times exceed the cost of the most expensive factory product. Instead of poultry products, you can use another natural material- livestock product - sheep wool. It is also capable of retaining volume and has very high heat-retaining properties. Such a product can be made only for the winter cold period and in the presence of a sufficient amount of wool.

We suggest paying attention to one, perhaps the cheapest, but not the worst material for stuffing a homemade mattress - hay. It is a quality dried young herbs with an unforgettable natural aroma. And if you add 5-10% of dried mint, hop cones and other soothing plants to its composition, sleeping on such a product will bring you an unforgettable rest.

The choice of filler for the mattress

For stuffing the cover, we recommend using a large piece of clean plastic wrap, on which we lay the future mattress and gradually tamp the dried herbs into it. Using straw or mature grass for these purposes is not advisable, as tough stems can ruin the whole experience of rest.

It is better to carry out work on padding the mattress with work gloves and clothes with long, buttoned sleeves. Otherwise, small scratches, many of which appeared on your hands, cannot be avoided.

If there are agricultural processing enterprises in the immediate vicinity of your location, you can fill the mattress with, for example, buckwheat husks or other similar material.

Instead of a natural filler, you can also use the products of chemical production in the form of a recently appeared substitute for wool - synthetic winterizer. It is lightweight, soft and non-allergenic.

After completing the above steps, you will become the owner of a unique product that will give you an unforgettable vacation and arouse the interest of your friends and acquaintances.

Today, there are many different mattresses on sale, ranging from rather expensive water or air mattresses to more budget options in which furniture foam rubber or cotton wool plays the role of a filler. An improperly selected mattress can cause many problems with the musculoskeletal system, therefore, when choosing this product, it is necessary to take into account all the nuances.

Which mattress is better - foam or wadded?

In terms of price, both foam rubber and wadded products are approximately at the same level, and belong to the lowest price category. Their orthopedic effect is not at the highest level, but in any case, such mattresses can also be considered as a temporary option.

Cotton wool

If we talk about mattresses with cotton filling, then their main advantage is the use of not synthetic material, but cotton, which is harmless to the body. In addition, this material perfectly retains heat, so the bed will be more comfortable.

However, cotton wool, as a filler, has many disadvantages:

  • The service life of a cotton wool mattress is unlikely to exceed 5-7 years, even with careful care and regular washing of the cover.
  • It so happens that various insects start in cotton, and it is very difficult to fight them.

Foam rubber

Polyurethane or foam can also be used to fill mattresses. In this case, the density of the foam rubber plays a huge role. Due to the specifics of factory production (in liquid state foamed polyurethane is poured into a special mold), over time, the filler of such a mattress does not get lost in lumps.

The main disadvantage of foam rubber products is that it tends to be squeezed over time, besides, any foam rubber is very sensitive to moisture - it worsens its properties.

The service life is also short - the same 5-7 years, subject to regular maintenance. At the same time, the price differs upwards in comparison with a mattress filled with cotton wool, nevertheless, the cost of foam rubber is slightly higher than that of cotton wool.

Important! If a special, so-called intelligent polyurethane is used to fill the mattress, then the cost will increase even more. Such a mattress filler is suitable for those who have problems with the musculoskeletal system. He knows how to “memorize” a person's favorite posture and adapts to it.

Which foam is more suitable for mattresses?

Answering the question, what kind of foam rubber is better for making a mattress with your own hands, mention should be made of the classification of foam rubber. The main indicators used in the classification are its elasticity and porosity.

Mattress foam must meet two main criteria:

  • on the one hand, it must be sufficiently resilient and elastic;
  • on the other hand, it is “to be able” to recover its shape after exertion.

Consider different types to understand which one is preferable to buy:

  • Very soft foam rubber of the HS brand is used exclusively for sound insulation. It has a high porosity and should not be used as a filler for a mattress.
  • Usually, in the production of furniture of the middle price range, polyurethane of the EL and ST brands is used, the material of these classes is also undesirable to use for mattresses.
  • Only the material of the VE and HR brands, which is used for luxury furniture, can successfully act as a mattress. Sometimes such furniture polyurethane is called latex or highly elastic. Products using this material are much superior to wadded ones, since while sleeping on it, a person is in the correct position, which makes it possible to fully relax.

Important! Many, choosing a mattress, doubt whether foam rubber is harmful to health. In the process of combustion, of course, a sufficient amount of harmful substances is released into the atmosphere. But with normal use this material is completely harmless and does not pose a danger even for allergy sufferers.

DIY mattress

Experts advise using only orthopedic mattresses in everyday life, because in addition to full and comfortable rest, it is also the prevention of many diseases of the musculoskeletal system. To our great regret, the cost of factory-made products is quite high and not everyone can afford it. Meanwhile, it is quite possible to make a mattress with your own hands from foam rubber step by step.

When making a mattress, you can go in two ways:

  • Simplify your task as much as possible and use a thick layer of highly elastic material as a filler. After cutting, you just have to process the edges of the material, then sheathe it with fabric and put on a cover on top.

Important! A 10 cm thick foam mattress made in this way will be quite comfortable and convenient.

  • But you can complicate the task and combine a layer of polyurethane and a spring base in the mattress. In this case, as a result, you will get an analogue of a factory-made orthopedic product.

Important! One of the best options is considered to be a spring base with independent springs. In this case, a person can be guaranteed to take a position that is comfortable for him.

Materials for work:

  • In the proposed design, the spring base will be placed in a box that is glued from pieces of foam rubber.
  • For the side faces, a material with a thickness of approximately 30 mm can be used, but for the lower and upper parts - at least 50 mm.
  • You will also need braid, felt and fabric for sewing the cover and covering the mattress itself.

The main part of the mattress

The basis of the mattress is a construction, which consists of:

  • two layers of polyurethane;
  • two layers of felt;
  • a spring base located between them.

Manufacturing principle:

  • After cutting felt and foam rubber, first a foam rubber layer is laid on any horizontal surface, then a felt layer, a spring base, a felt layer again, and this “cake” is covered with another foam rubber layer.

Important! Felt is used here so that the springs do not damage the surface of the polyurethane under load.

  • The free space on the sides must be closed with inserts from the same foam rubber, as a result, a closed box should be obtained.
  • It is better to use special glue to glue the individual elements of this box. You can do with “liquid nails” or ordinary PVA. But in this case, the drying time of the glue will increase, and a hard crust will appear at the gluing site, which will simply crack when deformed.

Important! To create additional strength, you can put a board on the foam rubber during the gluing process, and place a load on it.

Cover sewing

To sew a mattress with your own hands, you should also make a cover for it:

  • To do this, you need fabric and batting.
  • In the process of cutting, you just need to take into account the dimensions of the foam "box". Well, and, of course, leave a margin for processing the edges.
  • At the initial stage, the batting is sewn onto the fabric. On a flat surface, the fabric and batting are aligned with each other and manually stitched along the long side of the rectangle several times.
  • After that, you can start to process the edges. First, the excess batting is cut off, protruding beyond the fabric, and after that, along the perimeter of the future cover, it is stitched with an overcast seam.
  • Next, you can sew the narrow sections of your cover together.
  • Large parts must be sewn using decorative tape that hides the seam. First, the braid is sewn along the perimeter of a large part, then the edge of the narrow part is applied to the same braid, the braid is folded and stitched.

Important! The zipper is sewn on the same principle, so that in the future it will be possible to take out the mattress for washing.

DIY inflatable mattress

It turns out that making an inflatable mattress with your own hands is also possible. For this:

  1. Take a dense material, which can be either monochromatic or multi-colored - it depends on your desire.
  2. A shell for the future product is sewn from it.
  3. Next, we divide it into four equal compartments, the size of which is 170 by 80 cm.
  4. It is desirable to provide the side compartments with lacing. This is best done to ensure access to them.
  5. Next, take the usual, not previously fully inflated, balloons. Place an average of 5-7 balls in each of the compartments (the amount will depend on the size of your product).
  6. Lace up the sides and start using the product as intended.

dream about: a mattress made of natural fabric, with natural filler, and, apparently, with a cover for easy washing. not spring, not "orthopedic", but the most ordinary - a la the old Soviet striped - sleeping on the floor. only I need a suitable size and, of course, a little thicker.

what does not suit "yes, right now, there is such a choice everywhere!":
1. "I don't believe" synthetics and all these fashionable fillers like "very breathable" next foam-poly-ultra-propyline-cellophane, coconut flakes and other heresies.
2. The mattress should be of the "original" size: with a height of 185, according to preliminary estimates, the length of the mattress should be at least 220-240cm, so that you can sleep comfortably on your stomach, and the pillow will not fall off. in the same hardened "ike" floor mattresses - 200cm maximum. such is suitable only for not very tall girls 160-170 cm in height. Well, again, I don't need a monster like 240x240 either - I sleep on it, and not play football.

in total, what seems to me at the stage of the preliminary investigation:
rag I think it's not so difficult to find a suitable one. it is obvious that you still need 100% cotton of a decent density (and it is possible that you also need ... how to call it - like a "napernik" or ... so that the fibers from cotton wool do not climb through the cotton, in short). - sew? and what is there especially to sew - top, bottom - two rectangles with slightly rounded edges. and plus "boards". well, it is obvious that it will not be superfluous to fit a thinner zipper into the "side" (by the way, where can you buy a really long, rather thin one and so that it is of good quality - does not fall apart right there?) - so that you can access the filler just in case of fire. well, the "cover" is also needed, which will be on top - so that it can be periodically removed and in washing machine wash. the cover can also be zipped, or perhaps, with buttons ...

filler here I am not particularly in the subject yet; well, apparently, all the same cotton wool - cotton, or cotton with ... wool? in theory, there must be offices somewhere that sell such nonsense (by weight?).

Well main question: how to fill, so that it looks like the truth ??? here complications and subtleties are quite possible, but, I still believe that it is possible to do this ... well, plus, again, these are the through "firmware" that were used all my life on memorable mattresses of the times of the USSR - so that it is all there better "stood" and did not particularly stray from the center to the edges.

so, these are the pies. who has, maybe, experience, or some useful tips, considerations, caveats, etc.? Well, in principle, you can even express doubts, like "do you know, kind person, what kind of steam is there with this cotton wool, the process of stuffing and everything else ?!" ...

If you do not yet know how to make a mattress with your own hands, decide what type of filler you need and what the product will be used for: for a bed with a slatted bottom, or a lightweight version of padding polyester for a folding bed, a foam mattress to replace the old one that has squeezed through and lost its shape.

For manufacturing you will need:

  • Sewing machine;
  • The fabric from which the cover can be made (cotton or jacquard);
  • Sharp scissors for cutting filler materials;
  • Roulette;
  • Special glue for gluing filler materials;
  • Filler.

If you want to make a foam mattress with your own hands, perhaps this is the most economical and simple option, since foam rubber is easy to buy at any construction market or in a repair shop. It is important to pay attention to such an indicator as the density of the foam rubber for the mattress.

Typically, foam rubber has a density of 25 to 40 kg / m3. The density indicator is indicated by numbers in the marking, here also the stiffness is indicated, which directly depends on the density. There are standard low-cost brands of SL foam rubber, with more high density EL, which can support weight up to 100 kg, and elite brands HR and VE, which denote latex foam rubber, or artificial latex. The choice depends on your weight and budget.

Foam rubber is used in the production of most models of leading brands, however, in the description of the filler, the material is called polyurethane foam (PPU), in fact it is the same thing. By itself, the foam mattress does not carry orthopedic properties, therefore, in addition to PU foam, spring blocks or a layer of coconut coir are used in the filler.

In addition to foam rubber, latex is also used as a filler.

Its individual sections are independent, which is very suitable for double beds. However, the cost of the material is much higher than the price of foam rubber.

To make an orthopedic mattress with your own hands, spring blocks, coconut coir, synthetic winterizer, natural latex, felt, which is used as an interlayer separating the spring block and foam rubber, can be purchased at specialized stores offering materials for furniture upholstery.

How to make a foam mattress? Perhaps this is the simplest option that you can do yourself. For the manufacture of of this product required:

  • Foam blanks.
  • Sintepon or felt for stuffing.
  • Mattress cover fabric.
  • Spring blocks.
  • Wood planks or reiki.
  • Foam glue.

Materials that will be needed for work

It is worth taking care not only to find free time to make a mattress, but also to prepare materials for its implementation, before making a mattress with your own hands, you will need certain materials.

The main ones are:

  • Sheathing. Cloth of a dense type, which can be used to wrap the frame and other details;
  • Threads. They must be very durable;
  • Sewing machine;
  • Foam rubber.

You will definitely need hard foam rubber, a cover that can be used indefinitely. The density of foam rubber for a mattress is a relative indicator. The denser it is, the better. Otherwise, he will quickly rinse.

Such products have a certain classification. There are those that go only for upholstery. They are soft and porous. Those that are useful for the mattress are elastic, almost non-porous. Soft foam is only suitable for soundproofing.

Polyurethane is often called foam rubber. This is right. If you can find latex-type polyurethane, which is used specifically for upholstery, then you can consider yourself lucky. It is this material that will be needed in order to make a mattress on your own. Latex-based garments are categorized as "orthopedic".

It is important to choose a cover that is particularly durable. Spring mattresses are the hardest to make. But it justifies the effort. Despite the fact that there will be a reliable cover, and felt as protection from all sides, you can get an excellent model of a mattress without overpaying. After all, branded products are very expensive.

It is enough to pay only for the materials. For the rest, a person will not spend a penny, but only his own efforts. However, you will also need more details to help make the mattress:

  • Springs;
  • Reiki made of wood;
  • Long, wide nails;
  • A hammer;
  • Stapler.

Execution technology

To begin a task, you need to determine what kind of product should be the result. If you need a portable mattress for a summer residence, it can be made of foam rubber or padding polyester. If you need to build a stationary model for a bed with your own hands, you should use springs. In any case, you need to prepare pieces of foam rubber.

Next, you need to prepare the fabric for sewing the mattress topper. The dimensions of the product must correspond to the piece of foam rubber. Do not forget that the fabric needs to be stitched, which means that when cutting we make allowances for the seams. A convenient option for a mattress topper is a product with an overlap. This will allow the cover to be removed for washing if necessary. To sew a mattress topper with an overlap, add another 25 cm to the required length. After sewing the cover, you need to insert a prepared piece of foam rubber into it.

To make the finished product softer or tougher, it can be supplemented with padding polyester or coconut coir. The latter material will make the mattress more rigid.

Rivalry in strength

Cotton or foam? Or maybe an orthopedic one? In terms of value on the market, the first 2 positions are in the same price level. But the orthopedic one is beyond competition. For its manufacture, you will need foam rubber, the density of which is quite high. A cover is also needed. It will not be difficult to choose this material in modern conditions.

Cotton wool has the advantage of being natural. Cotton wool is made from cotton. Although this material has a low density, it is safe for allergy sufferers and asthmatics. But it is better to use synthetic filler if there are no people prone to allergies in the house.

Cotton is a priority and because of the excellent property of cotton to keep warm longer than its competitors. But cotton wool has several disadvantages:

  • Short service life;
  • Environment for the "settlement" of various kinds of insects.

The required density and rigidity by combining several types of material is justified. It is permissible to simultaneously use a synthetic holofiber, the density of which is high, or polyurethane.

How to make a mattress with your own hands if you use foam rubber? You will need a good cover, it is not necessary to buy a ready-made one. You can make it yourself without overpaying. At the same time, it is very convenient to equip the cover with a zipper to create an opportunity for washing.

In the process of using things that contain foam rubber, it is important to avoid getting on the surface of the water. It spoils this material, no matter what density it has. Foam rubber can become soft or creep altogether. This filler should only be used in dry rooms. If this product falls into a wet shed, you can say goodbye to it.

Orthopedic product

Today on the market for sleep products there are a huge number of manufacturers offering all kinds of orthopedic models, options with memory effect, children's models, spring and springless ones. Among this variety, you can choose the most suitable one both in terms of quality and price.

However, even taking into account all kinds of promotions and discounts, the price of the simplest orthopedic mattress in the store is higher than the cost of the materials that serve as filling. If you are ready to spend your time and make an orthopedic mattress with your own hands, you will be able to save a lot. In addition, the advantages of such a product will be:

  • Natural materials (you will know exactly what is included in the filler and what glue was used in the manufacture);
  • Removable cover made of pleasant fabric that can be washed or replaced (not all mattresses have a removable cover, creating a product yourself, you can provide everything you need for ease of use and care);
  • The ability to choose any combination of fillers depending on your preference for softness, you can also make an orthopedic mattress double-sided with a soft and hard side, such models in stores are usually expensive.

Spring models are easy to make. It is worth using purchased springs. It is easy to choose them by asking the store for special materials for the manufacture of furniture. If you do everything right, you will get an orthopedic mattress with your own hands. Sometimes it is enough to use springs from an old mattress or sofa, making new upholstery. It is recommended to use foam rubber as it. It is easier to create an orthopedic mattress with your own hands if you have:

  • Spring mechanisms;
  • Dense material;
  • Foam rubber.

To make your own mattress, you will also need twine. They need to tie the springs tightly together. Then set up your structure and put it under the bottom of the rail. Secure. Spring structures add density to the product. Then you need to use the filler. Pull the cover from above. The orthopedic mattress with your own hands is ready.

So, to make a mattress with your own hands, you don't need to make huge efforts. But it is important to be able to cut the material by making the correct measurements. It is necessary that the density of the foam rubber is high. Spring designs are also popular, but their manufacture will take more time, skill and material. An orthopedic option will become more convenient, which is suitable for any person.

It is quite easy to make a mattress for any bed, especially if you have certain skills in cutting and sewing. In this case, the main question remains: "Which filler to choose?"

The choice is relatively small. One of the main and relevant options is foam rubber. It is more accessible and has a comfortable texture. Elastic polyurethane foam, popularly foam rubber, is also used in the manufacture of orthopedic mattresses.

Products made from this material can often be found in baby cots or strollers. Since the main advantages are:

  • hypoallergenicity is one of the important criteria for use, especially when it comes to children's health;
  • hygroscopicity, foam rubber is able to absorb moisture and does not create condensation. Perhaps this is the main advantage of the material;
  • antibacterial - prevents the development, reproduction of various bacteria and mites. It is because of this property that products made of this material are so relevant in medical institutions;
  • good ventilation: the structure of the foam rubber has a high porosity, this contributes to the rapid removal of moisture from the product and prevents its accumulation;
  • polyurethane has good orthopedic properties, it is sufficiently elastic and provides necessary fixation bodies on the surface.

However, this material is short-lived and tends to break and deteriorate. But with due regard and manufacture of high-quality materials, the product can serve for a long time, fulfilling its functions.

Another filler, less popular today, is cotton wool.

Previously, it was more relevant to use, especially as fillers for mattresses, blankets and other textile accessories. However, it is not very good option for these purposes. Cotton wool has a fairly good primary porosity, but it is almost impossible to keep it in this form. Cotton fibers quickly lose their elasticity, and it becomes knocked down and hard.

You can make an orthopedic mattress in the photo with your own hands. To do this, initially cut out 2 pieces of foam rubber of the required dimensions. Then, using similar measurements, cut out 2 pieces of felt. After that, we cut out the spring block, which is a couple of centimeters shorter and narrower than the original blanks. Step-by-step instructions for creating an orthopedic mattress are simple:

  • We lay out the foam rubber on the floor and cover it with felt.
  • We put the springs on top.
  • On the sides we glue long pieces of foam rubber, 12 cm wide and equal to the length of the future mattress. For gluing, it is recommended to use a special adhesive for foam rubber.
  • After the glue has dried, cover the structure from above with a second piece of felt and foam rubber. We close the remaining short "windows" along the width of the product by gluing two pieces of foam rubber.
  • To ensure that all parts of the structure are securely glued together, you can put on top wooden blocks.
  • As soon as the glue dries, the orthopedic structure can be placed in the cover.

Homemade mattress sewing, use natural materials

We bring to your attention a budget version of the product that you can make with your own hands for a private house or summer cottage, using both traditional and not quite traditional, or materials forgotten over time.

We start the process of making a mattress with a fabric base - a cover of a certain size, which we will fill in the future. A sufficiently strong fabric must be prepared for sewing the casing. Moreover, it can be either traditional white or any other color, since the operation of the mattress is often carried out using bed linen.

From the prepared fabric, make a pattern for the details of the future homemade product. It will consist of two completely identical rectangular parts, the dimensions of which will depend both on the size of the people who will use the product and on the type of bed. Recall that modern stocks are divided in width into single, one-and-a-half and double.

Considering its required quantity and the price of such materials, the cost of such a product will many times exceed the cost of the most expensive factory product.

Instead of poultry products, you can use another natural material - a livestock product - sheep wool.

What materials will be required for manufacturing

Making a product with your own hands involves several stages of work:

  • It is necessary to measure the old mattress and determine the parameters of the product, purchase materials for the filler and the fabric from which the cover will be sewn, of the desired size and cut off the excess with sharp scissors;
  • If you are making a removable orthopedic mattress that is daytime will be stored in a closet, it is better to make a model divided into several parts, a folding version. To do this, the foam rubber is cut into 2-3 parts across;
  • To sew the cover, cut the two main parts and the side to the width of the mattress, leaving allowances for sewing the parts. It is better to make a cotton cover with a zipper or with overlap buttons. The width of the cover depends on the number of layers and the sum of their widths;
  • If you are making a thin removable version of padding polyester, you first need to sew a cover like a duvet cover, and insert the filler instead. The product can be made quilted;
  • If your future product consists of several layers, you need to assemble this "pie" by gluing the layers with special furniture glue, you need to choose an environmentally friendly and safe glue;
  • Using the spring layer "Bonnel", it is necessary to make layers of felt on each side, then use a layer of foam rubber on top and bottom, you can choose polyurethane foam with different rigidity for the upper and lower layers to make a double-sided version. It is better to supplement one of the sides with a layer of padding polyester.

How to make a mattress? You need to decide what parameters the thing will be. Next, measure and cut off the desired piece of foam rubber. The higher its density, the more difficult it is to use scissors. It is better to use a sharp knife for this purpose. If you managed to cut beautifully along the marks, then things will go easier.

Now the cover. It is important to use the dimensions of a ready-made piece of foam rubber. In this case, it is worth considering the seam allowances.

It is necessary to sew the cover across, and then make longitudinal seams on the other sides. Then you need to process the edges for the zipper insert. It is advisable to choose a non-stretching material that will tightly fit the workpiece.

When you need to make a more rigid version, it is recommended to use felt. This material will protect the foam rubber from the rapid penetration of moisture. The felt is dense and natural. It is made on the basis of wool. Such a filler must be placed on the foam rubber on each side in one layer before placing the blank in the cover.

Another option is to first prepare a cover to match the furniture according to the size of the bed, and then place the material in it. Filler - synthetic winterizer, pieces of holofiber, felt. You can use foam rubber. To prevent the filler from felting, it is advisable to sew the product with a dense thread.

It turns out that building an inflatable mattress in the photo is very simple yourself. For this, you need to take a dense material. It can be monochromatic or multi-colored - at the request of the user. From it we sew a shell for the future product. Then we divide it into four equal compartments, measuring 80 * 170cm. Side compartments, lacing is recommended.

This is necessary to ensure access to them. Further, step by step, we take ordinary balloons, previously inflated. Only you do not need to inflate them completely, otherwise they will quickly burst. We place an average of 5-7 balls in each compartment, depending on the size of the product. Having laced up the side parts, you can safely use an inflatable product.

How to make a bed with your own hands

TOTAL: 8805 rubles.

Processing boards

Sawing out the components of the bed

We calculate the dimensions taking into account the mattress purchased in advance, its dimensions are 1600 * 2000 mm.

2 boards of 2080 mm each (note that such a board width is laid, because the box inside should be 1600 * 2000 mm);

1 board 1600 mm long (the back board is placed between the side boards so that the wood cuts go to the wall);

1 board 1680 mm long (the front board is taking into account the angular cuts in Fig. 1.);

4 legs, 30 cm each.

The bevel on the front panel is made 45 degrees in a square. We mark it out, cut it out exactly with a hacksaw. If it turned out crooked, we level it with a plane (it is more convenient to use it by hand).

So, the frame is ready - the most difficult thing is ahead! The bed is made according to all the rules at the corners to get a perfectly square shape. In our design, the legs play the role of corners.

We cut a bar into 4 legs of 30 cm each. Then we make a marking, mark the middle on each leg, using a corner! It turns out the visible side of the leg (15 cm) and the invisible side (15 cm).

Wood sanding

This is followed by the stage of wood polishing. We take a flat sander, put on a mesh for 8 and start sanding. I advise you to carefully sand the sharp corners for your comfort. Do not forget to wear a respirator or protective bandage, as a rule, when sanding, there is a cloud of fine sawdust in the air.

Assembling the structure

Moving on to assembling the bed. We twist the structure with self-tapping screws. We fasten the bar flush with the legs from the inside to support the slatted bottom (the so-called stiffeners under the mattress).

We attach two iron plates to support the middle rail, do not forget to mark the middle exactly.

Headboard

We attach the back of the fiberboard to the back beam of the bed, grab it from the bottom with screws so that it is possible to slightly bend the beam and insert the leatherette canvas. We lay the foam rubber: it must be fastened from the bottom edge (it is not necessary to clamp between the board and the fiberboard, the mattress will stick out and cover the bottom of the back), leaving a little for the curl.

Then cover the back side of the back with a smaller plywood sheet. It is attached to short self-tapping screws with a wide head.

Painting

We cover the wooden structure with stain, in two layers, and each layer must dry for at least 5 hours.

If you want a "blacker" bed, you can cover it with 3 coats of stain! Don't forget to paint over all the cracks.

Then we process the bed with varnish (in two layers), each layer dries for at least 6-10 hours.

If drops appear after applying the first layer, we process this place with sandpaper, very lightly, so as not to damage the stain layer, and apply a second layer of varnish.

We finish assembling the bed by fixing the stiffeners. We fasten only the extreme ribs, stretching them when fixing (since in our case they are fastened together with a cord). If you have purchased loose stiffeners, you need to buy a wide construction tape and secure the ribs.

A well-pulled bed made of strong wood, although heavy, is strong, does not creak and looks very impressive. And most importantly, it is made by hand. This bed will delight you for many years!

New life to old things

Perhaps not every housewife decides to create a mattress with her own hands. But, if the house has an old sofa or mattress, they can be used to good use. What can be made from a mattress? Besides the fact that it can be taken to the trash heap, this product can be reanimated. To do this, remove the inner pillows from the unnecessary sofa.

These can be foam, felt or spring parts. If they are in good condition, it is recommended that they be used to repair an old mattress. To do this, you need to open it, remove the filler, and put pillows from the old sofa in its place. Having supplemented the structure with a small layer of felt, the mattress needs to be dressed in a new cover. Using felt or coconut coir can be used to make the bed softer or harder.

Instructions on how to make a mattress with your own hands are shown in the video.

At the end

If necessary and desired, you can make a new orthopedic, inflatable or foam mattress at home with your own hands. Will help in work detailed instructions from professionals. All that is needed to realize the idea is a piece of high-quality foam rubber, a felt backing, a cover made of durable fabric. If you plan to build an orthopedic option, you will need spring elements.
