As a result, I gained practical experience in mowing grass, thanks to which I managed to buy a trimmer that suits my purposes well.

Based on the knowledge gained, I give advice to the home craftsman on how to make an electric trimmer with his own hands from used equipment based on an electric motor from a vacuum cleaner, drill or grinder with pictures, diagrams and photographs that allow you to repeat a similar design.

Electric motor

The design of the lawn mower is based on a collector motor from an old Soviet-era 300-watt vacuum cleaner of the Buran brand. It was necessary to abandon its use for its intended purpose after various gaskets began to wear out as a result of prolonged operation, and air movement was disrupted. I was tired of eliminating the appearing fistulas that affect the pressure and suction, so I bought a replacement for him.

I used a special fastening of a button with a self-return from one of the expired measuring instruments. It is simply screwed to a wooden rod with a soft copper wire insulated and, for better clarity, the photo is shifted from its axis to one side.

The switching capacity of the contacts with a reserve can withstand the power developed by the motor of 300 watts.

I would like to draw your attention to the self-return function. I do not recommend using a conventional switch. If during the work you accidentally fall, lose your balance or something unexpected happens, and the working trimmer slips out of your hands, then you will not be able to stop it instantly. A sharp knife will cut anything that gets in its way.

To prevent accidents in such situations, I even excluded the function of constant operation on the factory trimmer by removing the corresponding switch. I believe that safety and health are more expensive than such facilities with risks.

Mounting method

Accidental access to the electrical contacts of the wires is limited by the insulation of a special insulating tape.

For a drill, you can screw two nuts onto an ordinary hairpin, pulling them together with keys, and use the plane of the created stop to install the knife.

A fastening nut will complete this design. If you put in wide washers, then the fixation will be stronger. The lock nuts can be replaced with one, but it will need to be welded. The back end of the hairpin is inserted into the drill chuck and clamped like a drill.

The hole of the knife must be drilled in the center, and the assembled nozzle must be well balanced. Otherwise, lateral runout will occur, for which the drill bearings are not designed.

From the grinder

Most often, a homemade electric trimmer is made on the basis of a conventional grinder, which is available from every home craftsman. This tool is almost ideal for converting to a trimmer. It has more power than store devices and a higher number of revolutions per minute. Since a drill with this attachment does not have a protective cover, such a tool is quite dangerous for the user. To protect yourself, you can place the drill, like the grinder (mentioned above), on a shovel handle or on aluminum pipe.

Also, to protect the user of the mower from knives, a cover can be attached to the drill (attached to a plastic pipe, and put on the body of the device).

  • insert the base with the motor and the cartridge inside, securing the elements with glue, and the cover with a sealant;

  • make blades by attaching them to the round plate of the unit;
  • a weather vane is made;
  • an assembled generator is mounted on one of its ends;

  • connect the wiring to the motor outputs;
  • check the output voltage with a multimeter by rotating the blades by hand.

There are many options for wind generators. Even the entire screwdriver is attached to the support, providing it with a nozzle with blades.

Alteration of a screwdriver into a grinder

Flat tool steel with a thickness of 2-3 mm and a width of 20 to 50 mm are used as knives. The thinner the knife, the better it cuts. However, a thick knife is stronger, which, given the obstacles in its path in the form of bumps, various foreign objects and even stones, very important.

There are two basic types of knives. The first is a knife in the form of a long strip, which is attached to the mandrel symmetrically about its axis. The length of the knife in this case is equal to the width of the grip - usually 30-50 cm. The sharpened ends of the strip serve as incisors. The knife and the mandrel can in this case be one integral piece in the form of a plate, to which a flange with a bore is welded or riveted.

The second option is two short knives 50-80 mm long, which are attached along the edges of the mandrel at an angle of 180 ° to each other. They can be straight or slightly sloped. You can attach the knives with two or one bolt. The first method is more reliable, but fastening with one bolt allows the knife to fold (without breaking or deforming) when it hits an obstacle - a stone or a bump. The attachment of folding knives should be inspected regularly as screws may fray over time.

The steel for the knives must be sufficiently hard, but not brittle, otherwise the knives may break, which will not only require replacing them, but also create the danger of injury from a flying piece. The experience of amateur craftsmen shows that a 2 mm thick hacksaw blade for wood is very well suited as a material for lawn mower knives. The technology for making a knife from them is simple. If the edges of the knives are bent upward (or the blades are riveted to them), they will work like a fan, lifting and rotating the cut grass with a stream of air. At the same time, if a cutout is made in the casing (in the quadrant where the knives run into) and a mesh bag or box is pulled over it, then the cut grass will be collected in it.

When starting to make a lawn mower with your own hands, you need to understand the danger posed by the operation of such devices. If we talk about the main threats, then there are two: electric shock and injury from rotating knives. Both are classified as very serious, therefore, security measures must be taken very carefully.

All electrical connections must be carefully insulated - both on the engine itself and on the control parts. The insulation on the supply cable must not be broken. To power the electric motor, it is necessary to have a double-insulated cable with at least 3 cores. The mower body is reliably grounded, for which one of the cable cores is used. Or connect the lawn mower to the network without fail using an RCD - a residual current device designed to de-energize electrical devices when a person touches their parts that are energized due to insulation failure.

Do not operate the mower without a protective cover. When working, you need to ensure that there are no people nearby. Broken knives fly out at high speed. And if the operator himself is protected by a casing, then with some designs of homemade lawn mowers, the front area of ​​the mower remains open. It is desirable to mow in rubber boots... This will save you from the consequences of hitting various objects that are thrown away by the rotating knife.

Do not use the mower in wet weather and early in the morning when there is dew.
