Country style curtains

Country style literally translates as "rustic". And each region is characterized by local features of this trend in the interior. Everyone has the right to define and choose for himself the style that is closest in spirit and attitude.

Someone is based on the creation of the interior of the summer cottage with childhood memories - the time spent in the village with their grandmother in a cozy house. Others, traveling through the cities of Europe, fall in love with the French "Provence", which they certainly want to embody in the decoration of a country house, or the Mediterranean interior. The third one likes the American country or the Scandinavian style.

Russian country - this is a familiar village hut. The textiles are characterized by simple (homespun) fabrics, monochromatic chintz or with a small pattern. The curtains were decorated with cross-stitch embroidery with a stylized image of plants, birds and people.

An important attribute of the Russian hut was a cut-out curtain. This is a kind of partition that separates the living part of the hut from the kitchen and stove corner. Often, curtains were also hung on doorways.

The windows were usually decorated with short curtains with lace or embroidery.

French provence - the style of a sunny French province, rich in vineyards, lavender fields and a variety of spices.

The abundance of the sun and the hot climate dictated the presence of light but cold shades in the interior: white, blue, lavender, in order to create a calm fresh atmosphere inside the house. Style is peculiar a large number of textiles made from natural fibers (linen, chintz, cambric).

On the windows there are light curtains with motifs characteristic of this region: flowers, lavender sprigs, grape bunches. And of course, do not forget about the companion fabrics that are present in the decoration of the house in the form of tablecloths, napkins, pillows and bedspreads.

Additionally, curtains can be decorated with ribbons, tie-backs in the form of brushes and flowers. You can often find in Provencal-style curtains a combination of several fabrics close in shades, as well as the presence of ruffles and frills.

American country - a colorful colonial ranch style, daring and simple, a little rude, but at the same time natural, with natural materials and simple forms. The textiles are characterized by floral or checkered colors.

And so to summarize: country style curtains are curtains in rustic style collected from natural materials e.g. linen, chintz, cotton, cambric. In country music, it is customary to use layering of colors and textures: curtains in a cage with inserts of fabric painted with small ornaments.

The color range for the selection of fabrics is diverse, however distinctive feature- warm colors: shades of beige and ocher, honey, green, shades of red. The curtain is sewn from a single piece of fabric, the ends are much longer than the center, reach the windowsill or cover it slightly. An arched shape can be achieved in two ways. We offer two patterns.

On a whole piece of fabric corresponding to the finished product, plus a margin for hem, an arc is cut out at the bottom of the canvas. The edge is processed with a bias tape, the top is gathered together to form folds. The curtain can be decorated with ruffles.

The second sewing method is the same as the first, but two arcs are cut. The upper arc (cut B) is stretched, a finishing tape, loops or hooks are sewn to it, which are attached to the cornice.

Cascading soft folds of the curtain are formed due to the fabric that hangs obliquely. The lower arch is the arch framing the window. It must be hemmed or processed with a tape, you can sew on a ruffle.

Rustic curtains are a step towards timeless tradition, allowing you to take a break from the constant race for popular destinations.

Simple curtains made of natural materials create the atmosphere of the desired idyll in the room, even if the apartment is located in the very center of a noisy city.

Rural-themed curtains are designed to give their owners a sense of home coziness and comfort.

It's an easy way to look at modern life from a different perspective and enjoy folk traditions that are passed down from generation to generation.

Textiles play an important role: it is thanks to them that a holistic and harmonious interior in a rustic style is created.

Such curtains can hardly be called curtains in the usual sense of the word. They are airy and often decorated with bright, expressive ornaments.

Rustic curtains attract with their laconicism and naturalness. Wonderful landscapes emanate from them, where the warm rays of the sun touch the lush grass. The feeling of unity with nature fills the rooms with special positive energy.

Short curtains combined with tulle

Nowadays, you can still see half-curtained windows in some places. The open upper part lets gentle sunlight into the house, and the lower one hides the room from prying eyes.

A fishing line or wire is stretched across the window. A slightly collected curtain is placed on it.

Rustic short curtains look harmoniously with light tulle and lace stripes at the top of the window opening.

In the old days, the curtains were decorated with their own hands using embroidery and knitted details. Decorations like these did their job, making the room much more comfortable. Short curtains look great in the interior of the kitchen or veranda.

Short curtains combined with a lambrequin

Rustic connoisseurs often choose practical curtains to the windowsill. In the upper part, they must necessarily contain a simple or tightening lambrequin.

To replace the luxury and severity, characteristic of the curtains of many modern styles, in this case, airiness and natural simplicity comes.

Lush lambrequins, which seem weightless, give the curtains a charming carefree note. A similar design of rustic curtains can be used in the kitchen.

Long curtains

Long country-style curtains are not as common as their short "congeners", but they have a right to exist. Usually they are used to decorate windows in a hall or a nursery. In sultry summer they bring coolness to the room, and on windy days they bring warmth.

Long curtains are ideal for when there are flower pots or vases.

Which fabric is best?

Rustic curtains are best made from natural fabrics. Which of them is better to opt for?

  • Linen curtains for small rustic windows are incredibly practical and beautiful. Their only drawback is their high price.
  • Durable and easy to use, chintz curtains are easy to wash, but can lose brightness from prolonged exposure to the sun. Products made from this material should not be washed too much. hot water, since they tend to become shorter. Inexpensive chintz preferred by lovers bright colors and variegated patterns.
  • Satin is a fabric made of twisted cotton threads that looks like silk. The dense and slightly shiny material has a significant advantage - it hardly wrinkles.
  • Taffeta curtains are no less beautiful. Delicate, thin fabric white makes curtains truly graceful and light.

Colors and ornament

If the material for curtains can be varied, then with the motives of the drawings, not everything is so simple. The photo of village curtains is dominated by ornaments depicting plants and animals, chickens, village houses and garden fruits. Plaid and striped curtains are very popular.

It is allowed to combine bright colors, among which yellow, red, green and blue tones are preferred. White and cream curtains should be decorated with patterns. A tablecloth or napkins made of the same material will harmoniously complement the overall picture.

The play of colors on the window enhances the mood and provides positive emotions. From bright curtains with a variegated pattern blows a sincere village fun, which is often lacking in a modern person.

Patchwork in curtain design

Intricate cuts are not used to make rustic curtains. You should also forget about catchy accessories.

In this case, the emphasis on the curtains can be made more in an original way, using the current patchwork technique, that is, the creation of curtains from multi-colored pieces of fabric.

This mosaic will effectively highlight the rustic curtains in the interior.

Rustic style: popular destinations

Rustic style is a rather multifaceted phenomenon. A lot of directions are united by the similarity to a village dwelling. How exactly? It can be either a Russian hut or an American ranch. Everyone chooses the style that is closest to him.

American country style involves the use of striped and plaid curtains. In the south-western “offshoot”, the use of Indian motives and patchwork is allowed.

In the English country style, curtains of a dirty white color, sometimes with a pattern, are common.

In the French style, the emphasis is on light fabrics and pastel colors.

Scandinavian allows the use of light curtains decorated with ruffles. Soft tones are in priority, small drawing is possible.

Traditional rustic-style curtains are a great opportunity to escape from the bustle of the city in your own cozy corner and relax your soul. Rural curtains are comfort, lightness and simplicity that every person needs.

V Lately country houses began to differ markedly from those that people built before. These are no longer familiar to many sheds, which were also used for storing household equipment. The owners are very careful with the design of their suburban homes, since everyone wants their place to stay cozy and pleasant. The end result largely depends on which curtains were chosen for the summer cottage.

Fabric selection criteria

When choosing a fabric, the main attention should be paid to ensuring that its color and texture correspond to the overall colors. You should also consider a number of other important points:

  • Location of windows. On windows facing the west or south side, in summer it is best to hang textiles made of dense light fabric that can protect from bright sunlight. This will prevent the house from getting too hot. Windows that face north and east can do without special curtains. You can hang curtains made of thick fabric on them.
  • Properties of fabrics. At the dacha, you can buy textiles from any available material... It can be linen, cotton or synthetics, although products made from natural materials are better for a rustic style. Synthetic curtains are considered more practical, as they are more durable, do not create problems in washing, retain their original shape for a long time and are resistant to fading. The final choice depends on the personal preferences of the owners.
  • The size of the room. In a small room, it is best to hang curtains made of light-colored fabric, which can be either plain or decorated with a small pattern. For a spacious room with large windows, any kind of curtain can be used.

If the attention of the owner was attracted by roller blinds or roman blinds, then it is desirable that they be sewn from a dense fabric that keeps its shape. For a veranda or gazebo, it is best to purchase textiles made of the most durable material that can cope with the negative effects of precipitation and wind.

Choice of design

Traditionally, country curtains are a rectangular piece of fabric that is neatly gathered at the top. Even with all the inexpressiveness of the cut, such curtains look attractive due to the bright colorful or checkered colors. Any interior solution has its own characteristics, which must be taken into account when choosing textiles for a summer residence.

Country and Provence

The main characteristic of the first style is high dynamics.... It is distinguished by the use in the interior of checkered fabrics in the shape of a rectangle with hooks that form a small assembly on the cornice.

Classic cut lambrequins are hung on the windows in the same way, fixing them on the cornice and forming them into a small fold. For the style under consideration, it is advisable to choose lambrequins with vertical grabs, sewn from contrasting fabric. To make the curtains in the country look brighter, they can be additionally decorated with thin denim and soft leather. This will allow the dacha to look not only beautiful, but also modern.

Provence style is invariably associated with the sun of southern France, therefore, for a summer residence, you should purchase canvases made of light-colored fabric with excellent light-scattering ability. This may be the most common cut. You should not pay special attention to it, the color design of textiles is much more important. Provence-style curtains should be made in soft colors, among which mustard, lavender, pistachio, olive will be considered the most appropriate.

It is allowed to use fabric in blue and white colors and in a not very small cage. It is perfect for sewing cafe-style curtains from this material. Among the available design options, a plant ornament made in the form of bunches of wildflowers is very popular. This style does not include strong saturated colors.

Provence does not allow the formation of a small assembly on the cornice. It should be replaced with soft wide hinges to secure the curtains to the windows. It is necessary to make sure that the curtains fall freely to the floor and flutter slightly from the breeze. This will help create a real French provincial atmosphere.

Scandinavian design

Its main feature is the use of pure cold shades in the interior, which seem to remind of snowy peaks and mountain streams. These can be curtains of a snow-white shade, hanging down to the floor in even wide folds. Among the tones appropriate for the Scandinavian style, it is worth highlighting lilac, blue and beige. Of the materials, fine wool, cotton and linen are best suited.

Mediterranean and rustic

The distinctive features of the Mediterranean style are brevity, simplicity and lightness. This should also find expression in window curtains, which should have a minimum amount of textile details.

The rustic style is usually associated with the style of the Russian village, with which everyone is probably familiar. Since the size of Russia is enormous, the folk style has vague characteristics, which makes it different from other countries. Each specific region has its own characteristics regarding interior design. But you can still distinguish general principles that remain unchanged for many centuries.

In order to arrange windows in a country-style country house according to all the rules, a number of recommendations should be taken into account:

To further highlight the rustic style, you can purchase a special patchwork fabric for the curtains, which artificially imitates patchwork. These curtains have a simple design. Traditionally, they are made in the form of rectangles, which are collected on the upper side of the wooden cornice.

With the help of long curtains, you can visually increase the height of the ceilings.

Short curtains are more appropriate for use in the kitchen. For the bedroom, it is best to choose curtains of such length that they completely block the window from the light. Simultaneously with them, it is allowed to use the usual cut lambrequins with grabs made of strips of fabric.

DIY curtains

Before going to the store for material, you first need to measure the windows, calculate the length of the finished product and the number of windows. It is advisable to purchase material with a margin if you plan to use it for sewing not only curtains, but also tablecloths, sofa cushions or curtains to the kitchen. As a result, the cost of decorating a country house may slightly increase.

Before starting cutting, the material must be washed so that it shrinks and ironed out. When choosing a fabric for sewing, ask the seller at what temperature it is allowed to be washed and ironed. To make curtains from chintz with your own hands, you will need a set of certain tools:

  • sewing machine;
  • pin;
  • threads of the same tone as the fabric;
  • crayon;
  • tape measure;
  • scissors;
  • iron.

It is necessary to measure the curtains for windows from above from the string of the cornice and to the selected mark below, which can protrude from the window sill or the floor level. To the obtained value, add 10 cm for the drawstring under the string of the cornice and for bending the bottom seam. When calculating the width of the canvas, you need to take into account that it should exceed the width of the cornice by about 20-30 cm. If you plan to arrange the curtains with drapery, then the calculated value must be additionally multiplied by 2.5. After the material has been washed and ironed, it must be leveled and applied with a crayon to the dimensions of the future product.

When starting to cut the material, especially if the fabric was bought in a cage or strip, it is necessary to take into account the following point: the pattern repeat on both canvases of the fabric must match in height. At the end of the cutting work, you need to sweep the seams and try on the curtains to the window. It is necessary to find out whether the string of the cornice is easily threaded into the upper drawstring.

If the dimensions were chosen correctly, then you can proceed to the next stage - to sew the curtains on a typewriter. The edges are best sewn with a hemming seam. This work will be easier to do if you use the dedicated sewing machine foot.

Be sure to take care of securing the seams, otherwise they will open immediately during washing. When all the seams have been worn off, the curtains can be ironed, but always with steam.

After the question with the most suitable style textile design will be resolved and all that remains is to purchase suitable curtains or sew curtains with your own hands for a summer residence, there are a number of important factors to take into account:

  • On the windows located on the south side, it is advisable to hang textiles made of dense dark fabric. It will keep the room cool for longer. If you wish, you can decorate the windows with textiles made of light material, but at the same time you need to remember that white fabrics quickly fade and become covered with unpleasant yellowness.
  • For autumn and spring, it is worth purchasing several sets of curtains. First of all, it is worth thinking about this for those who often come to the country for recreation in winter. In such a case, you should select in advance several sets that will be in harmony with the interior and slightly contrast with each other in color and style.
  • It is best to decorate the veranda or gazebo with curtains sewn from waterproof fabric. it practical solution will provide the building reliable protection from precipitation.

Against the background of nondescript rural curtains, complex curtain rods made of chrome steel or plastic will not look very beautiful. It is best to prefer wooden or forged structures. They will be an excellent interior decoration, especially if they are supplemented with convenient rings or clothespins for fastening.

The easiest way is to purchase finished products, but it is not always possible to find the most suitable option that would meet all the requirements and expectations of the buyer. Therefore, some owners go the other way - they sew coarse calico curtains with their own hands. This task is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance. It is only necessary to correctly calculate the dimensions of the product and not to be mistaken with the choice of material. The last point is especially important for a comfortable stay in the country.

The best country curtains must meet certain requirements - not only be practical, but also have a certain density, differ in functionality and simplicity, and do not create problems with attachment to the cornice.

Traditionally, the choice is stopped on cotton products, although each owner can, at his discretion, purchase or sew textiles for the dacha and from any other material he likes.
