There are three ways to strip old wallpaper from wall surfaces.

To begin with, small cuts should be made on the surface of the wallpaper so that the liquid completely soaks the wallpaper. Then the surface of the wallpaper is moistened with water and left for a while. After that, the old coating is removed with a spatula.

Instead of water, you can use special liquids to remove wallpaper. Note that such funds are absolutely harmless to humans. First, you need to dilute the wallpaper remover with water, and then apply it to the old coating (you do not need to make any cuts). After a few minutes, you can easily remove the old wallpaper with a spatula.

If you are lucky enough to have a steam generator on your farm, then this method is perfect for you. You can also use a steaming iron. When treating old wallpaper with steam, the glue under them swells, and the canvas can be easily removed from the wall.

If the glue that was used does not dissolve with water or special liquids, then the wallpaper will have to be scraped off with a spatula or grinder. Note that the spatula must be sharpened.

Important! When removing wallpaper in this way, take care of respiratory protection and cover the furniture in the room.

How to quickly strip old wallpaper

Since there is a wide variety, the methods for removing them are slightly different.

Removing paper wallpaper

To just moisten them with water or a special liquid will be enough. First, apply the liquid to the surface of the wallpaper using a sponge or spray. Repeat the process twice with an interval of 15-20 minutes.

Then, using a spatula, lift the wallpaper strip, starting from the seams. If in some places the wallpaper does not detach well from the wall, repeat the wetting procedure.

Since they consist of two layers, horizontal cuts must be made on the surface before wetting them. After upper layer vinyl wallpaper gets wet enough to be peeled off the backing easily. To do this, pull the wallpaper away from the wall with a uniform movement, starting from the bottom corners of the wallpaper strip.

If the bottom layer of vinyl wallpaper remains in good condition and is firmly glued to the wall, then it can be left as a backing for new wallpaper. Otherwise, this layer is also moistened with water and scraped off with a spatula.

Since they are made of synthetic fibers, they are more durable than paper wallpapers and take longer to soak. As in the case of vinyl wallpaper, you also need to make cuts in them first, and then do the same steps as with ordinary paper wallpaper.

Since washable wallpaper consists of two layers, it is first necessary to break the integrity of the upper waterproof. This can be done with a wire brush or a toothed roller. You just need to walk the appropriate tool over the surface, and then proceed to wetting with water.

The procedure for exposure to water may have to be repeated several times, and after that, using a spatula, you can remove the wallpaper from the wall. You can also use a steam generator instead of water.

To begin with, we note that they can be used several times after they are removed from the wall.

To remove such wallpaper from the surface of the walls, they should also be moistened abundantly with warm water, and then cleaned off with a scraper or metal spatula.

During cosmetic repairs, the problem of removing old wallpaper arises. In most cases, it is enough to soak the surfaces and scrape off the material. But if the repair is carried out in old apartments, where several layers are glued to the walls or strong compounds were used during the pasting, it is not so easy to remove the material. Therefore, before starting work, it is important to find out how to peel the wallpaper from the walls, if they do not peel off using the usual means.

It should be noted right away that in old apartments and private houses you should not try to rip off the wallpaper to the ground, it is better to just soak the top layer and remove it, and glue new material on the remaining paper. The fact is that the walls in such rooms are rather thin and do not differ in evenness, so if you remove the old wallpaper from the walls completely, you will have to level the surfaces and carry out soundproofing measures.

In all other cases, it is recommended to remove the material. This need is explained by the fact that if you do not peel off the wallpaper, then the new layer may become bumpy. Such a relief will show through on products of any type. In addition, it is important to remember that you cannot glue layers of material indefinitely. Sooner or later, this cake will become so thick and heavy that it will simply fall off the surface.

Also, mold or mildew may develop under the new coating. This will not only negatively affect the appearance of the walls, but can also adversely affect the health of the residents.

Fungus under the wallpaper is a major reason for removing old finishes.

What tools to use in problem cases

Before peeling off wallpaper that cannot be removed with water and a spatula, it is recommended that you prepare one of the following sets of tools:

  • wallpaper tiger (roller with a long handle and metal spikes on the head) and means for softening factory or homemade glue;
  • steam generator or iron with steaming function;
  • an electric drill with a grinding wheel or a special machine, you can use hand graters with sandpaper.

In all cases, you will need plastic wrap to protect the floor and furniture, as well as duct tape.

Preparatory work

Before tearing off the wallpaper, you need to carry out a number of works. First of all, all things that can interfere with work or suffer from them, including furniture, are removed from the room. Massive interior items can be left, but then it is recommended to cover them with plastic wrap. The floor should also be covered with foil, and newspapers or cardboard should be placed on top so as not to slip.

After that, you need to remove the front panels of the switches and sockets. If there is autonomous lighting, the room is de-energized, otherwise it is necessary to seal the holes in the walls with adhesive tape. It is worth removing all fasteners, then the wallpaper will be easier to tear off the surface.

If part of the coating has moved away from dampness or for other reasons and peels off easily, it must be removed before starting work.

Using a steam generator

If you have such a tool at hand, then the wallpaper from the wall can be removed quickly enough. To do this, fill the container with water, wait for the device to heat up, bring the outlet nozzle to the wall and steam a small area. While it is still hot, you should start scraping the material with a spatula. In particular difficult cases Before removing the cover, it is recommended to damage it with a knife or a hard metal brush so that the steam better penetrates the wallpaper layer. By the same principle, an iron equipped with a steaming function is used.

It is a little more difficult to work with a regular iron. To do this, moisten a rag with water, lean it against the wall and press it down with a hot device. You need to hold the iron for a few seconds, remove it, and then quickly peel off the treated area.

Important! In this case, we are talking about working with electrical heating devices, therefore, you should adhere to safety precautions and use personal protective equipment, including a respirator.

After using these devices, it will be quite easy to tear the wallpaper off the wall. But the steam will penetrate the surfaces and condense, therefore, before further finishing works it is recommended to dry the walls.

Using grinders

It will be quite difficult to remove the coating with the help of such devices. If the wallpaper is not firmly glued, it is better to use a different method.

Wallpaper removal sander is used in particularly difficult cases
  1. If a drill is used, a circle must be fixed on it for cleaning surfaces, usually it looks like a metal brush. Then put on a respirator, turn on the device at low speed and lean the nozzle against the wall.
Some people press the tool too tightly for the coating to peel off better, but this is wrong - it is more difficult to work this way and there is a risk of damaging the plaster under the material.
  2. Instead of a drill, they also use grinders, they are cheaper and simpler. They should be handled in the same way as with a drill.
  3. It is very difficult to work with hand tools... It may take several days to process one room, so their use is advisable only in extreme cases.

Using tiger wallpaper and emollients

Now let's look at how to quickly peel off old wallpaper using special substances. They are sold in almost any hardware store.

To save money, you can make the product yourself. This will require water and a household cleaner.

  1. Washing powder. For 10 liters of water, 1 kg of powder is required, the mixture is stirred and applied to the walls.
  2. Laundry soap. It is grated or crushed in another way and poured over with warm water.
  3. Detergent for dishes. It is diluted with water in proportions of 1:50.
  4. Fabric softener. Diluted with water 1: 1, well applied with a spray bottle.

Alternatively, you can prepare an acetic acid solution or regular wallpaper glue. These substances will cope no worse than the factory ones; after using them, the wallpaper can be peeled off very quickly and easily.

How to work with a tiger and softeners

Previously, craftsmen tore off wallpaper with knives and other tools that damaged the surface, now a wallpaper tiger is used. With its help, the entire treated area is rolled, thus perforating it. Small holes will allow liquid to penetrate deeper into the wallpaper layer and dissolve the adhesive more effectively.

Wallpaper tiger is usually used when removing washable wallpaper, it allows the penetration of liquids into the inner layers of the material

After that, you need to prepare the solution and apply it to the surface with a roller, brush or spray, it is better to first treat a small area. After a while (from 15 minutes to 3 hours) it is necessary to pry off the wallpaper and pull it down. It is important not to rush here: if the strip has not completely departed, you will have to soak the fragment again and wait. Gradually, all wallpapers will be removed. Then you should dry the walls and you can start finishing work.

Attention! All means for softening the glue are made on the basis of substances harmful to human health, therefore, if they get on the mucous membranes, it is necessary to rinse them as quickly as possible with water. If this does not help, and your health worsens, you need to see a doctor.

Now the question of how to easily remove the old wallpaper has been resolved. This process is not so much complicated as it is lengthy, so it is important to be patient and strictly follow the above instructions and manufacturer's recommendations.

Take a roller, dip it in water and slide it along the wall. Wait a few minutes and roll over the wallpaper with a wet roller again. Advice

New wallpaper

Everyone faces the problem of removing old wallpaper before gluing new ones during repairs in an apartment, but not everyone knows how to do it correctly. It is extremely important to remove all residues of glue and paper, only then the new wallpaper will lay flat on the walls and will hold firmly and for a long time. In addition, pieces of the old coating not only spoil the aesthetic appearance and can come off the wall along with the new one at any time, but also contribute to the development of mold and mildew, which is difficult to get rid of later. There are several ways to remove old wallpaper, and the choice of a specific one depends on what kind of wallpaper needs to be removed, on what glue they are glued, as well as on the arsenal of available tools and tools.

Beforehand, it is worth visiting a construction market or store or rummaging in a pantry in search of devices that facilitate work. You will need to have on hand a pair of sharp spatulas (narrow and wide) and a special wallpaper remover that dissolves the glue, paint roller, masking tape, plastic wrap and a device for piercing the surface of the wallpaper. If the liquid cannot be found, then in extreme cases, you can use plain warm water, and instead of a roller, an ordinary sponge. In addition, a steam mop (household steam generator) can greatly facilitate the work.

Regardless of what type of wallpaper you have to peel off, you must first prepare the room for this procedure. In particular, lay a plastic wrap on the floor surface, attaching it with masking tape to the baseboards. Sockets and switches must also be protected from dirt, and the entire room must be de-energized to prevent liquid from entering live electrical wiring. Further actions depend on the material.

The easiest way to remove liquid, non-woven, washable and fiberglass. The first ones are generally enough just to moisten with water and they will come off on their own. Washable or non-woven ones must first be cut and poured into the holes with water, and when the glue swells from it, they are perfectly removed from the wall. Unlike paper ones, they do not tear, so the process is really easy enough. Vinyls are removed in about the same way - water is poured into cuts or scratches on the surface, which, falling on the polymer layer, dissolves the glue, and after removing the durable part of polyvinyl chloride, paper residues are peeled off the wall with a spatula.

The biggest problems, as a rule, are caused by paper wallpapers - they tear very easily and have to be removed in small pieces. In addition, if this is not the initial removal, there is a high probability that under them there will be more than one layer of paper left over from previous repairs, when the new wallpaper was simply glued on top of the old one. Special means for removal are the simplest and easiest option. The liquid just needs to be diluted with water and applied to the wallpaper, it will dissolve only the glue, leaving the paper intact, and it will be quite simple to remove them from the wall afterwards. Modern liquids are absolutely non-toxic and do not have a pungent odor; you can not be afraid to use them even indoors. Also, the glue swells quite well and the wallpaper moves away from the wall under the influence of steam - you can use both a steam generator and even an ordinary iron with a steam function. If there are no special tools and devices, then, after making cuts, treat the paper wallpaper with warm water with the addition of vinegar or fabric softener and, when the paper is soaked, remove it with a spatula. This method can take a long time, since small pieces remaining on the wall will need to be moistened and cleaned again.

All of the above methods are suitable only in cases where the old wallpaper is not glued with PVA glue or another type of glue that does not lend itself to water or even special liquids. Those glued with them will have to be removed completely by hand. Sharpened spatulas, grinders with coarse brushes, or a drill with a round metal brush as a nozzle can help in this. Here it will not be possible to limit ourselves to covering the floor with polyethylene - it will be necessary to cover both furniture and your respiratory organs from the resulting dust.

Removing wallpaper from plasterboard walls stands apart. In this case, one should act very carefully and no mechanical methods will work anymore - they can damage the paper layer that covers the drywall. The most simple and effective - again, special fluids, however, it is worth choosing those that require the least possible addition of water to them, it also harms the drywall. In the event that negligent builders or former owners glued the wallpaper to the drywall with PVA glue or the like, nothing can be done and it will be necessary to change them along with the drywall.

Nuances

It would seem that there is nothing difficult in how to strip old wallpaper, but there are some nuances.

First, for the wallpaper to be removed better, you need to moisten it with water and wait a little. When the wallpaper glue is wet, it will be much easier to peel the wallpaper. The best way to moisten wallpaper with water is from the pulverizer that your wife sprinkles on the laundry before ironing. But you can use a wide brush and a bucket of water.

If you have modern, for example, vinyl wallpaper, then first of all you need to peel off the top layer of vinyl, since it does not allow water to pass through. And the base can already be moistened and removed.

If we are talking about non-woven wallpaper, then it is easier not to remove the base, it is strong enough, you can safely glue new wallpaper on top of it.
After wetting the wallpaper, you can peel it off with a small, stiff spatula.

You need to peel off old wallpaper very carefully. When it comes to putty in the future, the remnants of old wallpaper will prevent you from doing this work normally. Large patches of raw wallpaper will simply swell and prevent the putty from sticking to the wall.

Specifications

When choosing finishing materials for walls, the special characteristics of the wallpaper must be taken into account. All types of wallpaper, except for simple paper ones, have three easily distinguishable layers. The bottom layer is sometimes called the base.

The characteristics of the materials from which these or those wall-papers are made are very important for your clients. These are the following characteristics: toughness, scratch resistance, moisture resistance, stain resistance, durability and wear resistance.

So, there are three main layers of wallpaper:

Bottom layer or base

This wallpaper layer is glued to the wall. The base is made from various materials. It can be woven, non-woven, or paper. The basis of moisture-resistant wallpaper on a coated wall can be paper or fabric. And for simple paper wallpaper, the base does not differ from the second layer, on which the drawing is directly applied.

Second layer

It is the basis for drawing and serves as a background. As a rule, this layer is creamy, but in principle it can be of any color. The thickness of the second layer can be different, the price of the product depends on it. As a rule, the thicker the wallpaper, the higher its grade.

Decorative layer

This is the top or outer layer of your wallpaper. It is applied using a variety of techniques such as flexography, gravure printing, surface printing, and manual or automated stencil painting.

Particularly wear-resistant types of wallpaper on the walls can have a protective polymer coating. It serves to give the material additional strength. Wallpaper can have a transparent hot stamping top layer or vinyl backing. Wallpaper that is completely detached from the walls may have a cold-embossed topcoat.

Characteristics and properties of wallpaper

Breathable and non-breathable

Wallpaper either allows moisture accumulated on the walls to pass through, or does not let it through. The air permeability of the wallpaper is very important because different premises preferred different types wallpaper. For example, in hospital rooms, it is better to use non-breathable wallpaper as it prevents mold from forming. V living rooms(for example, in the living room, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen) it is recommended to glue breathable wallpaper.

Wallpaper glue containing a high percentage of water can only be used on breathable wallpapers. And glue with a low water content, such as ready-made vinyl, is best used for gluing non-breathable wallpaper.

Easily removable types of mural wallpaper

Such wallpapers can be easily removed from the wall when dry. They leave almost no marks and do not damage the surface of the walls at all.

Scraping off

The decorative layer and the second layer can be removed with a scraper, but this leaves the base on the wall. New wallpapers can be glued directly onto the base of old ones. If you want to paint the wall, you will need to scrape off the base. Peel wallpaper is usually made from vinyl with an inexpensive paper backing.

Stain Resistant Wallpaper for Walls

Stains from such wallpaper can be easily removed, practically without damaging the material.

Washable

Such wallpaper can occasionally be washed with a sponge with a soft detergent('Ivory' type) and water. In this case, the sponge should not be too wet.

Cleaning

The wallpaper can be cleaned regularly with a sponge and mild detergent. These wallpapers are indispensable in the kitchen, bathroom and in crowded places. However, this does not mean at all that such types of wall-paper can be washed with aggressive products such as ‘Brillo’ or ‘Ajax’).

Fade resistant

Such wallpapers do not lose their color brightness when exposed to direct sunlight.

Abrasion resistant

You can rub them. They are indispensable for crowded places.

The main types of wall wallpaper

Paper wallpaper

Paper wallpaper is wallpaper with a paper base on which a pattern is applied. Such wallpaper can be completely removed from the wall, or scraped off, depending on the properties of the paper. Sometimes a protective layer is applied over the paper to keep the flowers from fading. Usually, paper wallpapers are breathable, but can become non-breathable if they are coated with a thick layer of paint or a thick protective coating. Such wallpaper can be greased with glue in advance. Before choosing wallpaper glue, be sure to read the instructions.

Coated paper wallpaper

The paper base is covered with a thin layer of acrylic, vinyl or plastisol, on which the pattern is applied. Such wallpapers can be easily removable or scratch-off, breathable or non-breathable. Read the instructions carefully before gluing.

Thick Vinyl Mural Wallpaper

In vinyl wallpaper, the finished vinyl film is glued to a paper or fabric backing. Heavyweight vinyl wallpapers are non-breathable and are considered more durable than those made with a liquid vinyl backing. Heavyweight vinyl wallpapers fall into two categories: paper-backed vinyl and cloth-backed vinyl.

Paper backed vinyl wallpaper

Vinyl is applied to the paper base. The base is usually wood pulp paper. Such wallpapers are non-breathable, as a rule, they are scraped off and can be greased with glue in advance.

Fabric-backed vinyl wallpaper

A dense vinyl coating is applied to a woven or non-woven backing. The decorative layer is applied to the vinyl. The wallpaper is non-breathable, usually removed from the walls completely and is not smeared with glue.

Coated fabric wallpaper

Liquid vinyl or acrylic is applied to the fabric base. The picture is printed on top of this layer. The material is breathable better than fabric-backed vinyl.

Rare types of wallpaper

Wrapping paper

The wrapping paper is glued under some types of wallpaper. It absorbs moisture, flattens the surface and prepares walls for pasting. It is used for uneven surfaces such as block walls, ceramic stone walls or paneled surfaces.

Foamed vinyl

A layer of vinyl is applied to the base, which is then heat treated and "foamed". The texture of foamed wallpaper may resemble embossing. This wallpaper is non-breathable.

Foil

A thin metal film is applied to the fabric or paper base. Foil can only be glued onto a perfectly flat surface and must be handled with extreme caution. Before pasting a room with paper-backed foil, it is recommended to use paper wrapping. These types of murals do not breathe.

Mylar

The base is coated with a metallized polyester film. Such wallpapers reflect light well. They are similar to foil, but less stiff and less wrinkled. Mylar is a registered trademark of DuPont. It is recommended to use a pasting paper before directly gluing the wallpaper.

Velor wallpaper

The texture of the wallpaper resembles velvet. Fibers are applied to the base (paper, vinyl, foil or mylar). Hang velor wallpaper with extreme care. When pasting walls, it is forbidden to roll the seams with a roller. The edges of the wallpaper are gently pressed with a smoothing brush. Any glue that comes out must be removed immediately with a damp sponge. Velor wallpapers are breathable and non-breathable.

Wallpaper from natural materials

Made from natural fibers: reed, bamboo, grass, natural fabrics or jute. Usually they have a paper base and "breathe". The hue and texture of the wallpaper may vary slightly, and customers should be advised about this.

Hand-painted wallpaper

The drawing is applied by hand using stencils. As a rule, the client chooses the color combination himself. The price of wallpaper depends on the number of shades used, but, as a rule, such wallpapers are not cheap. Usually, these types of wallcoverings are breathable.

Textile wallpaper

Textile wallpapers are made from fabrics such as silk, cotton or velvet. Initially, all types of textile wallpaper are breathable, but some have a vinyl covering. Usually, textile wallpapers are hardly processed.

Glowing wallpaper

Luminous wallpapers are most often offered for children. Luminescent paint during the day it absorbs sunlight and electric light, and at night it glows in the dark for a while. These wallpapers are non-toxic. Manufacturers do not give any guarantees regarding the duration of the glow at night.

Self-adhesive borders

Curbs can be glued onto painted or smooth surfaces, cleaned of grease and dirt, and then peel off. It is not recommended to glue such borders over the wallpaper, with the exception of borders for children, used to delimit zones.

Perforated curbs

The curbs have a perforation line along the lower edge, which allows you to adjust the curb width in accordance with the customer's requirements. The bottom edge of the border must be carefully separated, being careful not to tear or stretch the paper. There is a thin white line along the perforation line. This is not a defect, but a feature associated with the process of making curbs.

Industrial wallpaper

This type of wallpaper is specially designed for use in institutions such as hotels, offices, schools and hospitals. They are manufactured in accordance with applicable federal regulations. These standards relate primarily to flammability, tensile strength, abrasion resistance, stain resistance, water resistance and the possibility of wet cleaning the wallpaper surface. All industrial wallpapers are non-breathable.

Types of industrial wallpaper:

Type I (Lightweight)

Used in offices, hospitals and hotels.

Type II (Medium strength)

For use in foyers, break rooms, classrooms and hospital wards.

Type III (Extra strong)

For use in areas where wallpaper is particularly prone to dirt, such as hospital corridors.

Coating types

Sometimes wallpapers have a special coating that gives them special characteristics.

Teflon

The teflon coating makes matching wallcoverings resistant to stains. Most stains can be removed without damaging the material. Sometimes stains can be removed even 24 hours after being dirty. The Teflon coating is applied during the wallpaper production process. It is used for vinyl wallcoverings intended for residential use.

Tedlar

The coating is anti-stain and is used for industrial wallpaper. Tedlar is also applied during the wallpaper production process.

Vinyl

The most common type of coverage. Gives the wallpaper greater durability compared to plain paper wallpaper. Wallpaper may be washable or non-washable, depending on the type of covering. Most vinyl-coated wallpaper can be cleaned with a damp sponge.

Drawing methods

Of course, in order to successfully sell this or that type of mural wallpaper, it is not necessary to thoroughly understand the methods of drawing a picture. However, familiarity with these techniques will allow you to master the necessary terminology and learn to better understand new products that appear on the market.

Here are the most common drawing methods:

Flexography

Also known as aniline seal. For flexography, a very liquid, fast drying ink is used that is applied using flexible rubber printing plates on which the pattern is imprinted. The printing plates are either wrapped around the print roller, or the roller itself is made of rubber and is patterned with a laser. The soft material allows paint to be applied evenly, even on rough paper or vinyl.

Surface Printing

This method is very similar to flexography, except that the print roll is usually made from an aluminum-magnesium alloy. The print rollers are spaced at regular intervals around the perimeter of the printing unit. One print roller applies only one shade of ink, and each roller has a separate ink vat.

Gravure printing

Conventional printing methods involve applying ink only to the surface, however, rotogravure printing (rotogravure printing) allows ink to penetrate deep into the material. In rotogravure printing, ink is contained in the tiny cells of the print roller or mezzotinto plate. Excess paint is removed with a doctor blade. The ink contained in the cells is applied to the paper, reproducing shades and midtones. The drawing turns out to be, as it were, consisting of many small dots. The gravure printing method provides excellent quality at high print speeds. It allows you to draw fine details and use up to twelve different shades.

Screen printing

Also known as rotary screen printing. This method of hand-drawing was developed in 1930 and involves applying the design to the wallpaper through the slots in the stencil. A separate stencil is used for each shade. In addition to traditional silk, the screen printing mold can be made from nylon, wire or cotton. The slots are made by hand or with the help of special devices, and the paint is applied manually, semi-automatically or with the help of automatic machines.

Engraving

The pattern is extruded onto the surface. The contours of the engraving are applied to the print roller, which is a patterned steel tube. The shaft is covered with cells of different depths to achieve different shades. The engraving process is very expensive. The cost can be as high as $ 1,000 per roller.

Print stations

Printing stations are used to apply ink to paper. Let the paint dry before applying a new shade. For this, special dryers are used.

The summary

The process of combining different shades.

Paper

Width ranges from 20 1/2 "to 27". Industrial wallpaper is typically 54 inches wide. Some rolls are 36 inches wide.

Dye

Solvent-based paints are used for engraving. Water-based paints are used for the serial production of wallpaper.

Improvised means.

Before gluing the wallpaper on the walls or ceiling, you have to solve an urgent problem: how to rip off the wallpaper? The old canvases are faded and dilapidated, but they hold on tightly and are clearly not going to give up without a fight. Nevertheless, you will have to strip the wallpaper, as much as you would like it. In fact, this is not such a daunting task. You just need to learn from the experience gained by many of your predecessors. Well, let's fight the wallpaper?
How to tear off wallpaper with improvised means

So, you have the time and desire, but there is no special wallpaper remover. No problem! You can do with what is at hand. After all, the most main secret is that any wallpaper glue is water-soluble. This means that before you peel off the wallpaper, you need to wet it thoroughly. When they are properly soaked, and a sufficient amount of water has penetrated to the glue, it will get wet, and it will no longer be difficult to tear off the old wallpaper. Have you already tried it, but it didn't work? Perhaps you just do not know some of the subtleties. Try our recommendations.
How to rip off paper backed wallpaper

It is usually not difficult to peel off paper-based wallpaper, unless, of course, they are glued to PVA glue. Just follow the instructions:

Fill a bucket or basin with warm water.
Dissolve some dishwashing liquid in the water. Fairy does an excellent job not only with grease on plates, but also with wallpaper glue. One tablespoon per liter is sufficient.
De-energize outlets and switches.
Using a rag or sponge, apply the soapy solution evenly to the wall. Do not let a lot of water run down to the floor - you will flood your neighbors.
Do not process the entire area of the wallpaper at one time so that it does not dry out before it is time to remove it. To begin with, limit yourself to the area that was completed in 10 minutes of work.
After 15 minutes, try peeling off the old wallpaper by prying it off with a spatula or a mild knife. Be careful not to damage the plaster layer.
If the wallpaper does not lend itself well, then the glue is not yet soaked. Re-wet the wall section with water. In the case of particularly dense wallpaper, the procedure sometimes has to be repeated up to 3-4 times.
It is not necessary to wet the wallpaper more abundantly than required. After each step, check how easily they come off. Otherwise, by moistening the wallpaper 5 times in a row, you can tear off the old wallpaper along with the soaked layer of plaster or putty.
As soon as the wallpaper begins to peel off easily from the wall, start peeling it off. Wallpaper rarely comes off in whole canvases, so, most likely, you have to tinker a little.

With your own hands

How to glue the wallpaper correctly? Many people ask themselves this question before starting repairs in an apartment or house. After finishing the putty of the walls, painting the ceiling and ceiling plinths, if any, proceed to the wallpapering. If someone thinks that it is easy and simple - you are mistaken.
There are enough various subtleties and nuances when gluing wallpaper, and if you do not know them, you can easily ruin expensive wallpaper. And instead of feeling joy and pride in yourself, you can experience grief. After all, looking at how the wallpaper has dispersed, or peeled off, and according to the law of meanness, even in the most conspicuous place, is not very pleasant. To avoid this, you need to know something and be able to. So, let's take a closer look at the technology for gluing wallpaper in order.

1. For gluing wallpaper, a special wallpaper glue is used. It must have high adhesive properties, be moderately moisture resistant, resist the development of mold and mildew, easily dissolve without lumps, be transparent and not stain. Nowadays, many different types of wallpaper adhesives are produced, but not all of them, unfortunately, meet the above requirements. There are adhesives that are recommended to be used only for certain types of wallpaper. For example, for paper wallpaper, finishers recommend QUELYD Express glue, it has a greenish packaging, for other types of wallpaper, heavy (vinyl, paintable wallpaper, textile) they also recommend QUELYD glue, purple packaging.

2. Having chosen and bought the necessary glue, we proceed to its preparation. The instructions indicate what concentration to do, I think there will be no problems with this. Pour warm water into the bucket and pour the glue, stirring it with a stick. clods will not form. Stir everything thoroughly, let the glue stand for a while, for complete dissolution. The wallpaper paste then becomes uniform.

3. For better adhesion, before gluing the wallpaper, it is necessary to prime the walls with diluted wallpaper glue. To do this, dilute the finished glue with water by 20-30%. Next, as a rule, glue is applied to the back of the wallpaper, let it settle a little and proceed to pasting. But this technology is not suitable for all wallpapers. For some wallpapers, for example, non-woven, this approach is unacceptable. In this case, the glue must be applied directly to the wall, otherwise they will deteriorate, stretch, and when dry they shrink and a gap is formed between the stripes. Read carefully the instructions for the wallpaper, reputable manufacturers usually write some warnings there.

4. Before gluing the first sheet of wallpaper, you need to beat off the vertical. We take a construction plumb line, apply it to the wall in the right place and draw a line, then along it or parallel to it we glue the first canvas. Nowadays, very rarely anyone glues wallpaper with an overlap, usually it is glued end-to-end. Also, before cutting the canvases, you need to pay attention to the patterns so that they match. We measure the height of the wall, estimate where and how the patterns will pass and cut off the first canvas with a small margin of 5-7 cm, and all the rest along it, while also looking at the patterns. If there are no patterns, everything is much simpler, then we pay attention only to the length of the panel. In this case, the consumption of wallpaper is much less and this must be taken into account when buying.

5. To apply the glue to the wallpaper, use a regular paintbrush or roller. We spread a film or paper on the floor for the length of the panel, fold the strips on top of each other and apply wallpaper glue from the back. After, in this state, we usually stand for 3-7 minutes and glue the sheet. The time for the wallpaper to soak is different for different wallpapers, the instructions usually indicate which pause to be paused. You shouldn't overexpose them too much. then the wallpaper will be difficult to glue, they can tear in the hands.

6. We glue the canvas to the wall, smooth out wrinkles and bubbles from the middle to the edges with a clean cloth, sponge, brush or just by hand. If glue is squeezed out of the joints, remove it with a damp cloth or sponge. If the paint on the wallpaper, when soaked, is smeared, in this case, it is better to smooth them with a brush.

7. Since the panels have a margin in length, after gluing them, an excess of material is formed under the ceiling and at floor plinth... We do the following, mark with a simple pencil the desired length in place (with a margin of 4-6 mm for cutting onto the plinth), then slightly tear off fresh wallpaper, cut off the excess under a ruler with a knife or scissors, and glue it again.

8. If the wallpaper is vinyl, and now it is very widely used, then when gluing the border over the wallpaper, a problem may arise - the border may fall off after a while. To prevent this from happening, you need to stick it on the wall, let it be longer, but more reliable. We do it this way: at the desired height, make a mark, along the perimeter, glue the upper part of the wallpaper. We cut them along the line with a knife using a metal ruler, then glue the border end-to-end, but not to the end, then glue the lower part of the wallpaper and put the top under the border, and then cut it along the border line and glue the border to the end. Yes, confusing, but worth it.

9. How to wallpaper sockets and switches? Of course, it would be nice to run the wallpaper under the cover of an outlet or switch, but for this you need to turn off the electricity. Ask a competent person to do this (unscrew the plugs or turn off the "machine" and check the absence of voltage in the sockets and switches with the device), and then remove the covers and glue the wallpaper. We cut a hole crosswise, in the place of the outlet (switch) and fill the ends of the wallpaper into the box, cutting off the excess. After the wallpaper has dried, put the covers back in place. If there is no one to turn off the electricity, it means that we are gluing, i.e. We carefully glue the outline of the outlet cover or switch.

10. We have disassembled everything how to glue the wallpaper, but there is one more important point- how to dry wallpaper properly? Negligence in this matter can ruin your entire work. While gluing the wallpaper and until it dries completely, you need to ensure that there are no drafts, exclude any possibility of them. This is dangerous because the drying of the wallpaper occurs unevenly, which will lead to marriage: spreading of the joints, peeling, tearing of the wallpaper. Therefore, close the doors, windows, vents and be patient a little while the wallpaper gradually dries.

Adhering to the above rules, you can easily glue the wallpaper yourself, with your own hands. This technology of pasting wallpaper, as you can see, is quite simple and having mastered it, you can save money on something else. I think these tips were helpful to you.

PREPARATION OF WALLS FOR GLUE

Preparing walls for wallpapering is an important stage of renovation in any room. It is no secret that you should not glue wallpaper on walls that were previously painted, plastered or pasted over with wallpaper. Firstly, the uneven surface on which the wallpaper is pasted greatly affects the final result. Secondly, even the smallest paint residues or dirty spots on the walls can lead to the fact that upon completion of the work, dark and yellow circles, stains appear on the wallpaper, which is completely undesirable from an aesthetic point of view.
Preparing walls for wallpapering includes several features. If the walls were previously covered with wallpaper, then they must be removed from the surface. To do this, you can use a spatula, wet brush or coarse sandpaper.
Alkyd or oil paint it also needs to be cleaned a little before gluing. You can, of course, try to remove the paint completely, but this is difficult and takes a lot of time. And the wallpaper is glued to the painted walls just fine. But in order to avoid those very stains, you still need to clean the paint with a special coarse-grained sandpaper until a matte surface is obtained. After that, a primer is applied to the surface of the wall using a roller, which should dry out within 10-15 minutes.
Irregularities on the surface of the wall must be leveled with a putty. After that, it is important to wait until the walls are dry, since it is contraindicated to glue wallpaper onto a wet putty!
Today, it is not uncommon for walls to be sheathed with special panels and other sheet materials in order to achieve perfect evenness. In this case, during the preparation process, it is important to pay special attention to the seams that can appear through the wallpaper and thereby spoil the appearance. To prevent this from happening, you need to caulk the seams, paste over them with paper, putty and, after the putty dries, clean it with a sandpaper.
Various stains deserve special attention at the stage of preparing the walls for wallpapering, which must be eliminated. Fungus, mildew, rust and water leaks are faster and best removed by treatment special means, deeply penetrating primer, anti-corrosion compound, and on top are covered with putty.

PASTING WALLPAPER

After the walls are prepared, the crucial stage begins - wallpapering. However, it is not enough to simply cut the strips to the required length and lubricate them with glue. The gluing process implies the presence of the required tools (scissors, roller, brush, painting knife with replaceable blades, pencil, metal spatula 350-600 mm), as well as pre-prepared glue. To prepare the glue, a bucket of warm water of 35-40 degrees is required, into which the glue powder is gradually poured. After that, the glue should be infused and swell for 10-15 minutes.
You need to start gluing wallpaper from the corner of the room. First, a vertical line is drawn on the wall using a plumb line and a building level, along which the first sheet of wallpaper is subsequently laid out. Oiled panels of the required length fold the glue to the glue and leave to soak for 10-15 minutes. After being applied to the wall, the wallpaper sheet is ironed from the center to the edges, thus expelling excess air. The excess wallpaper from the top and bottom is trimmed with a metal spatula and a paint knife.
