The principles of the selection of indoor plants for the winter garden. Plants for a winter garden - a list of the best options for a private house and apartment

Foreword

Plants for winter garden they will create a real paradise for you, if you approach the choice correctly and take into account all the features of care. What you need to know to choose your favorite annuals or perennials - read on.

Plants for the winter garden are your pride!

As always, the basic principle is not to take everything. The choice must be approached with all responsibility. First of all, you need to decide what kind of plants you would like to see. There are a lot of outdoor plants or balcony annuals. You can choose both by type and by height, duration of flowering, color, etc. Such plants need an eye and an eye, especially during the period of autumn frosts - at this time, some plants die.

There are more hardy species that can withstand snow, and not even too low subzero temperatures... A large number of plant species can create a beautiful flowering carpet, but they also have special requirements and, above all, for light. Many people find it difficult to tolerate dry air or high temperatures... Moreover, in winter, plants require special watering, spraying, and sometimes moisture and fertilization. Top dressing, pruning - in general, you need to know a lot.

For perennials in pots, attention is no less close. Compared to annuals, they grow more slowly. But at the same time, you do not need to fiddle with seedlings, dive, germinate, constantly change flowerpots during transplantation. True, such flowers are very sensitive to the humidity in the room. Therefore, if you want to create a winter garden, think a hundred times before you start.

Winter garden and its difference from a veranda or a greenhouse

The first such gardens appeared in Egypt, then they began to be created in Ancient rome... Something similar to winter gardens were widespread, but already in the form of greenhouses or botanical gardens, during the Renaissance. In the 16th century, gardens appeared in Europe in the so-called Pomeranian houses. They were greenhouses with exotic plants and fruits. Greenhouses were built in Amsterdam and Paris, and then appeared in country houses residents of London.

Unlike other premises, which can be greenhouses, greenhouses, and other similar outbuildings where plants are grown in winter, winter gardens are part of the living space.

Usually a large area is allocated to create such a beautiful place. Be sure that your friends and family will often gather here. After all, such a structure, glazed from all sides, keeps heat and lets in light from the street, and creates a beautiful corner of real nature in your home. The winter garden successfully combines the advantages of a greenhouse and a veranda. In addition, thanks to energy-saving technologies and pre-fabricated structures, you will not spend a lot of time and money on creating such an oasis right in your apartment.

Flowers for the winter garden - what you need to know so that the plants do not die?

Imagine a sharp contrast - there is frost outside and snow outside the window, but on this side of the structure it is warm, everything is blooming and green. Ice on the street will not prevent you from keeping a palm tree at home, as well as sudden temperature changes from the outside, will not prevent you from growing violets or orchids in the warmth on your territory. But in winter it is a serious process.

So beautiful architectural element Homes for plant care can be diversified with a glass roof. Your transparent structure will only benefit from this and visually expand the boundaries even more. Remaining, in fact, a single whole with your home, the winter garden should not differ in style from the main building inside. The main emphasis can be placed on lighting and the flow of sunlight from the outside and, of course, on your unique flowers. If you choose the right combination different types plants, you can enjoy work in the city, and outdoor recreation, without leaving your home.

What flowers are best for you? As before, the fashion for plants that are grown in winter gardens is constantly changing. Designers offer different variants a set of flowers - from large to small, from flowering to cacti, from the familiar conifers to completely exotic. The choice may not be easy, but it will be your decision. Keep in mind that the selected plants need to be correctly positioned in the winter garden. Depending on which you choose - indoor, tropical or subtropical.

Fundamental rules:

  • So that the flowers do not die and are bright and beautiful, you need to provide them with a good level of lighting. Just keep in mind that artificial light is not very useful for green spaces.
  • Maximum illumination can be achieved by creating access to daylight by installing glass and transparent elements. This applies to walls and ceilings.
  • Do not forget to take care of thermal insulation and creating optimal temperatures inside the winter garden.
  • Humidity is one of the main ingredients. It must be maintained at a certain level.
  • It is important to know when your plants begin their dormant period. Sometimes the "impromptu winter" can last for several months.
  • When choosing flowers of exotic species, it is better to specify in advance what kind of care they need and whether they can grow together with the usual, traditional species for your region, plants.

Both annuals and perennials will not survive the heat if your temperature rises to record highs. Above 45 degrees Celsius is a problem for preserving all flowers, with the exception of cacti. If possible, it is better to install a small fountain. Fuchsia, hibiscus, dracaena can be placed around it. Thus, you will save them from drying out. Excessive dryness of the air can affect the flowering of plants. Try to control humidity. Indoor plants for a winter garden, both subtropical and tropical, are best prepared for winter in stages - let it be a flower that has grown to the cold, than a recently purchased and not yet matured one.

Therefore, during the winter months, the nighttime room temperature should be much lower than the daytime.

The winter garden can become your office, a place for relaxation or an office for business negotiations. It is quite simple to create it, the main thing is to choose the right plants!

What plants will take root in the greenhouse

Plants will become the highlight of the garden blooming in winter... We are talking about such specimens as phalaenopsis, anthurium, hippeastrum, passionflower, hibiscus. It is important that the plants are combined with each other, and not only externally. You can make a real paradise out of a garden by placing fountains near flowers.

What should be a winter garden for orchids

Orchids are a great option for a greenhouse. At the same time, you can plant in the winter garden completely different plants. But you still have to comply with some conditions:

  • if the temperature in the garden at night does not drop below 16 degrees, you can grow phalaenopsis in it;
  • in low-heated rooms (10 ° C), cymbidiums will perfectly take root;
  • does the temperature reach 12 degrees at night? Cattleya, odontoglossum, miltonia, cellogyne, noble dendrobium will get along well in it.

It is not necessary to place orchids in the ground on the floor of the greenhouse. Plants look great in special hanging baskets.

Majestic anthurium

The anthurium plant is eye-catching. It has beautiful glossy colors of pink, red or white. In the middle of each flower is an ear of purple, white, yellow, brown or green.

Taking care of Anthurium is not easy. It does not feel well in a confined space, but it will be just right for a winter garden.

It is believed that hibiscus has a strong love energy. That is why it is recommended for any married couple to plant it in their winter garden. Then harmony and comfort will always reign in your family.

Design features

At first glance, the creation of a blooming greenhouse requires a large number effort. But it is not so. Moreover, even poor people can equip a winter garden, if you do everything yourself, including the selection of plants, it will not take much money.

  • To get started, try drawing up a plant placement plan. Blooming specimens should be preferred.
  • The selection of plants is based on bio-ecological requirements. The garden can be divided into several climatic zones.
  • So, orchids require a lot of space for themselves. If you plant other plants next to them, the orchids can wither away. Other plants, on the contrary, do not see anything wrong with having "neighbors" next to them.

How to care for flowering plants

Before you start choosing plants for your winter garden, you need to have a clear idea of what the greenhouse will be used for. If the garden will be used as a place to relax, it is worth giving preference to unpretentious specimens.

Among other things, the biological needs of flowers should be taken into account:

  • attitude to water;
  • temperature;
  • light;
  • humidity.

Too many plants should not be placed in the greenhouse. This can negatively affect the health of plants - they will more often become infected with diseases, and the "air" effect will disappear in the composition itself.

So, the selection of flowering plants for the winter garden is a responsible and time-consuming job.

And if you are not confident in your abilities, it is best to give preference unpretentious species, for example, anthurium.

oleander and bougainvillea , lavender scent and rosemary it is decorated with fruits lemons , tangerines ,. All of these plants come from areas with warm tropical summers and non-tropical winters, when temperatures can drop as low as 5 ° C.

But some of them come from humid subtropics, where a lot of precipitation falls during the year (Southeast China, the Japanese Islands, the eastern coasts of Australia, the Florida Peninsula, the Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa, as well as the regions of Poti and Batumi on the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus) ... Others are children of dry subtropics. The air there is dry enough, and it rains mainly during the cold season. As, for example, in the Mediterranean: it rains most in winter, and in summer they are negligible or not at all. There are sites with a similar climate in southern Africa, Australia and America (California and Chile).

Therefore, when creating a subtropical garden, opt for either plants of humid subtropics, or dry ones. No matter how great their plasticity and adaptability, best results can be achieved only by bringing the conditions of artificial keeping as close as possible to natural requirements cultures.

The main difference between humid and dry subtropical winter gardens is, understandably, the humidity in the summer. In the first, it should be at least 80-90%. This can be achieved by installing humidifiers, operating the climate control system, or by regularly spraying the plants. In dry subtropics, 40-60% humidity is sufficient.

In addition, for the inhabitants of a subtropical garden (both wet and dry), the autumn period of dormancy is important. It falls at the end of October - mid-January and is necessary for the ripening of flower buds, the preparation of even and abundant flowering in the future. During the dormant period, plant growth slows down or stops. At this time, they prefer daytime temperatures not higher than 10 ° С and about 7 ° С at night. In too warm rooms, they shed their leaves, weaken.

In both types, a supply of air is needed for normal growth and development of plants. In the spring, as soon as the night temperatures outside become positive, constant ventilation is necessary. Therefore, transoms are needed along the entire perimeter of the winter garden.

Many of these plants are unpretentious and grow on rather poor substrates (a mixture of sour high-moor peat and coarse-grained river sand in equal proportions). In February-March, before the start of top dressing (with complex fertilizers with microelements), the substrate is acidified. We recommend using aluminum sulfate at the rate of 1 g / l of water. In the future, this procedure, which restores the acidity of the soil, is repeated once a month until mid-October: each time, two to three days before feeding, the soil is shed with such a solution.
