Methods for finishing the slopes of windows from the inside. Plastic platbands for plastic windows

Platbands are special strips for hiding assembly seams between the window frame and the wall. In addition to its direct purpose, platbands can be used to decorate the window and facade of the house. To choose the right platbands and produce them correct installation, check out our article.

The main rule when choosing platbands is that their material matches the material of the window. If you have a wooden window, then the platband should be wooden, if it is plastic, then plastic. Although there are exceptions, in the form of a successful combination of platbands and windows made of different materials.

Wooden platbands

Wooden platbands - made of strips with a thickness of at least 30 centimeters. The width of the wooden platbands can be different, depending on the profile pattern and design. The profile pattern of simple wooden platbands is made using a milling machine.
Advantages: affordable price, easy installation.
Disadvantages: poor design, poor resistance to moisture and temperature extremes, the need for regular painting or varnishing.
Release form: rounded or beveled strips with a convex pattern, or smooth, 1.5-2 meters long.
Application area: hiding assembly seams on wooden windows. Additional protection of seams from environmental factors.

Carved platbands

Carved wooden platbands are made by hand or using a jigsaw. There are many options for the platband pattern: from simple ornament to sacred symbols that protect the house from evil spirits. Self-production carved platbands are a job that requires skill in carpentry. If you want to make platbands with your own hands, but have no experience, choose a pattern without complex elements.
Advantages: very beautiful appearance, the ability to improve the facade of the house without significant financial investments.
Disadvantages: high price, complexity of manufacturing, fragility, the need for regular painting.
Release form: depending on individual order or a design by the manufacturer.
Application area: decoration of windows and the facade of the house, hiding assembly seams.

Plastic platbands

Plastic platbands are common name for planks made of plastic, PVC and foam. Platbands made of plastic are often included in the set of installed plastic windows. Due to the specifics of the production of this type of platbands, they cannot be made at home. Plastic platbands can have a regular and carved pattern. The strips are mounted on special fasteners, liquid nails, glue or double-sided tape.
Advantages: resistance to moisture, long-term operation, easy installation.
Disadvantages: fragility of some products, small choice of design when imitating carved platbands.
Release form: smooth, carved or with a profile pattern strips, 1.5-2.5 meters long.
Application area: hiding assembly seams on plastic, sometimes wooden windows. Additional protection of assembly seams from environmental factors.

Platbands from MDF

Due to the low resistance to moisture, it is recommended to use Medium Density Fiberboard trims only for interior window decoration. MDF planks are great for wooden windows especially if they match the color and texture of the wood. The platbands are fastened with nails, screws or glue.
Advantages: low price, good appearance.
Disadvantages: poor resistance to moisture, inability to use for external decoration.
Release form: smooth, rounded or profile-patterned strips, 1-3 meters long.
Application area: interior decoration wooden or plastic windows.

Aluminum platbands

Platbands made of aluminum are mainly designed to hide assembly seams when installing windows and stained-glass windows made of the same material. By outward appearance and design, aluminum trims strongly resemble plastic trims. Fastening of aluminum platbands is carried out on a special profile or latches.
Advantages: strength, durability.
Disadvantages: poor combination with windows made of other materials.
Release form: aluminum strips with different kind except for the carved pattern, 1.5-2.5 meters long.
Application area: exterior and interior decoration of windows and stained-glass windows made of aluminum.

Making platbands with your own hands

You can make platbands yourself only from wood. To do this, you will need a special tool and wooden planks.

Simple platbands

To make simple wooden platbands, you will need:

  • Electric jigsaw.
  • Plane (simple or electric).
  • Sander.
  • Milling cutter (manual or machine).
  • Fine-grained sandpaper.
  • Wooden planks with a section of 30x100 mm.

Manufacturing technology of simple platbands:

  1. Process all sides wooden planks plane.
  2. Install the profile accessory on a handheld or stationary machine.
  3. Finish the front side of the trim with a router bit.
  4. Finish the trims with sandpaper or a sander.

In the absence of a milling machine, platbands with a smooth surface can be made. To do this, use a planer to cut the front side of the plank at an angle of 20-30 degrees and grind it with sandpaper.

Carved platbands

If you are going to make wooden platbands with a carved pattern, keep in mind that this is not a quick job and requires "iron" patience. To create carved platbands, in addition to basic tools, you will need a set of special chisels with different form blades and a hand jigsaw. To make it easier to navigate in a large selection of patterns, below are some templates for cutting:

Carved platbands can be made in two ways - conventional and overhead. In the usual way, the pattern is cut directly on the casing itself. In the overhead method, the pattern is made in the form of overlays, at least 10 millimeters thick, after which the overlay is attached to the main casing. For beginners, it is recommended to use the overlay method, because in case of an unsuccessful pattern, the overlay can be replaced with a new element.

The correct choice of wood species for the carved platband is very important. It is easier to carve softwoods because they are soft. Platbands made of hard larch species will last longer.

If you have not done wood carving, choose a very simple pattern for the first time and, as your skill increases, move on to more complex patterns.

Stages of making a carved platband by an overhead method:

  1. Prepare the base for the platband, for this, process the strips with a thickness of 30 millimeters with a plane.
  2. Make overhead strips at least 10 centimeters thick.
  3. Draw the elements of the future pattern on thick paper or cardboard.
  4. Cut out the pattern with scissors.
  5. Place the cut-out stencil on the overhead strip and transfer the design to it.
  6. Use a drill and a jigsaw to make notches along the lines.
  7. Finish the edges of the grooves with chisels, round the edges and finish the contours.
  8. Sand the finished cover piece.
  9. Install the trim over the main platband, securing it with glue or nails.
  10. Having collected all the overhead elements in one composition, proceed to the installation of the platbands on the window.

Installation of platbands

Installation of wooden platbands

You can install wooden platbands on the window using nails, screws or glue. The slats are attached to the sides and top of the frame. In some cases, the platband is installed on the lower part of the window, if this is provided for by the design.
For a beautiful joining of simple platbands, their edges are cut at an angle of 45 degrees. This can be done with a hacksaw and a miter box.
In the case of a deep location of the window in the opening, the platbands can be placed on the wall using extensions.

Fixing the platband to the wall depends on the material from which it is made. For a wooden wall, it will be enough to use nails or screws, for a concrete or brick wall - dowel screws.

Installation of carved platbands mainly depends on their design and composition. Docking of carved platbands is carried out in such a way as not to disturb the overall pattern.

After installation, the platbands are treated with wood impregnation, then painted or varnished.

Installation of plastic and aluminum platbands

Correct installation plastic and aluminum platbands, assumes the presence of a special installation profile, which is attached to the frame. Platbands are installed in a groove located on the profile. In the absence of a profile, the platbands are installed on snap fasteners attached to the frame or wall. In rare cases, plastic trims can be fixed with glue, but this type of fastening is unreliable.

When using telescopic platbands, fastening is carried out by inserting the edge of the strip into the groove located on the frame.

Foam platbands, attached only with glue.

Putting platbands on the windows with your own hands is the easiest and cheap way give the appearance of the house individuality and express its character, which has survived from antiquity to the present day, see fig. In the old days, an illiterate newcomer, guided by the platbands, could find the dwelling of the necessary master, specialist, official, a public or noble place. Nowadays, the functions of platbands on windows are mainly decorative, but the patterns on them have not lost their meaning, see below.

Story

Platbands on the windows of dwellings of peoples who practiced massive wooden architecture appeared simultaneously with the windows "glazed" with a fish bubble and mica. Initially, their purpose was purely functional: to cover the insulation and wind insulation - to heal - in the gap between the window and the frame.

Platbands with sacred patterns were first noted among the ancient Celts, but the true flowering of the art of creating carved platbands is associated with the unification of the reviving Russia under the leadership of Moscow and the overthrow of the Mongol yoke; Russian craftsmen in woodcarving were unmatched. The Bolsheviks wrote down the platbands as the remnants of the bourgeoisie and declared war on them for destruction, but now the artistically decorated window platbands are experiencing a rebirth.

This article is intended, as far as possible, to satisfy the reader's demand for how to make beautiful window frames with your own hands, how to give them artistic expressiveness and install them in place.

Design

Kinds structural performance window frames are shown in the photo. Overhead platbands (pos. 1) are attached to the wall; plug-in, or box-shaped (pos. 2) - to the slopes of the window opening of windows (this is better) or in the window frame (worse). Overhead platbands are placed on the windows flush with the wall; plug-in - for windows in niches.

According to the possibilities of insulation and protection of the insulation, the platbands are divided into framing (pos. 3) and the portal, pos. 5. Platband-portal is often complemented by a visor. The platband-framing practically does not protect the window insulation / seal from locking and is placed on the windows from the inside or on the windows overlooking the canopy, for example, on the veranda.

Installation

Traditionally, platbands are installed by fastening to the wall or window slopes. Now for this it is best to use self-tapping screws (4,2-6) x (80x150), if the wall is not wooden - in propylene dowels. The attachment points are placed as evenly as possible at the rate of 1 point per 5-7 square meters. dm of the clypeus surface, outlined by its outer contour. When attaching to the slopes, the attachment points are placed in a row with a pitch of 150-300 mm (depending on the mass of the casing, which, in turn, depends on its artistic performance, see below) along the center line of the outwardly protruding part of the bearing (base) wall. The holes with the fastener heads are either hidden in the ligature of the upper levels (see below), or they are putty and painted over with a basic tone.

Platbands - "telescopes"

V modern houses, outside insulated and sheathed with siding / clapboard, windows are often placed flush with the base wall, otherwise the window will generally sink into the wall. In this case, nothing remains for fixing the platband, except for the window frame. In such a case, the so-called. telescopic platbands, but quite reliably they will only hold on windows in reinforced frames designed for regions with a harsh climate; frame material - reinforced PVC or modified wood (see below), does not really matter.

All "telescopic" platbands are reduced to their installation on trimmed in place additional elements, rigidly connected to the window frame. The most reliable platbands are on groove extensions, on the left in Fig. Telescopic systems of platbands with a groove in the frame (for example, on the right in the figure) are not intended for outdoor installation: a gust of wind can break the platband, breaking the frame at the same time.

If the window frame is modern wooden or PVC with a keyway, telescopic platbands can be installed to such a window without removing it. If the PVC window is on a wall with inaccessible base surface is not intended for installing the platband, then there is no other way out but to remove the window, put a box under the platband in the opening, attaching it to the base wall, and reinstall the window. In this case, the casing box must have grooves corresponding to the attachment points of the window anchors.

Wood for platbands

Painted, cut and slotted platbands, wooden platbands (see below) are made of high-quality straight-grained pine or larch without knots. The thickness of the boards is from 30 mm. A knobby spruce is not good: outside the knots will soon be outlined under any cover, and there they will begin to fall out.

Carved platbands require wood that is suitable for carving - fine-grained, viscous, dense enough - and resistant to outdoor conditions. The best breeds for this are oak and beech, but they are quite expensive. Linden, alder and aspen are suitable after 2-fold impregnation (the first impregnation - before seeping through) with a water-polymer emulsion; oil, silicone and mineral (borax solution) impregnation against decay does not increase the viscosity and surface strength of wood. Birch is absolutely unsuitable: on the outside, no impregnation will save it from fungal attack.

Note: a magnificent carved platband is very simply obtained from the cheapest plywood, twice impregnated with a water-polymer emulsion. For more information on plywood trims, see the end.

Shield for platband

Sometimes one board is not enough for the desired width of the casing, but fastening 2-3 boards into a shield with steel fasteners in this case is a gross mistake. The wooden shield on the steel outside will soon crack, then the fasteners in the gap between the casing and the wall will rust and crumble. But it is also impossible to assemble boards into a shield for a platband in a furniture way without additional reinforcement, because a wardrobe or table is not designed to withstand strong winds, rain and snow. Shields are rallied from the boards for the platband. way, see also fig. below:

  1. A plastic wrap is spread on a table or workbench with a 3-fold margin along the width of the future shield;
  2. Boards are folded in a bag on a film and glued with PVA or waterproof wood glue;
  3. When the glue sets, the package of boards is wrapped in foil;
  4. Place plywood cheeks under the bag in a film and put it on it;
  5. The bag with the cheeks is tightly wrapped with a linen cord;
  6. Pairs of wooden wedges are knocked under the turns of the cord so that the cord stretches as tightly as possible;
  7. After 2-3 times of complete drying of the glue, the cord, cheeks and film are removed;
  8. From the underside (back side), the shield is additionally reinforced by stuffing 40x20 bars, laid flat, across the boards.

Note: boards are assembled into a package, observing the rules for alternating the orientation of the layers of wood, like furniture boards, see on the left in Fig.

Not a tree

Wooden unpainted platbands do not look good on any wooden wall, even if its material mimics the wood color well. In such cases, it is better either to put simple PVC platbands complete for the window (on the left in the figure), or more expensive polyurethane platbands, the rest of pos. in fig. Polyurethane platbands can imitate external stucco molding and painted multi-level cut-out platbands (on the right in the figure); last option can be prefabricated on glue from separately purchased items.

Different arts

The artistically designed window trims can be performed, firstly, with frame (item 1 in the figure below) or in a frame, pos. 2; functionality, i.e. window seal protection, both are the same. Platbands in salaries are the most informative and sacredly significant, which we will discuss below. In addition to functionality, frame platbands are mainly decorative.

From the point of view of woodwork, frame platbands, in order of increasing complexity, are divided into:

  • Cut-out - boards or shields are cut along a curly contour, pos. 3.
  • Slotted, pos. 4 - a pattern is cut out in the board / board. They are relatively rare, because fragile.
  • Slit multi-level, pos. 5, up to 5 or more levels - the sawn-out patterned modules are attached to a solid simple or cut-out base. In addition to strength, multi-level platbands are good because powerful fasteners to the wall are hidden in the ligature of the upper levels, and the upper levels themselves can be fastened with small inconspicuous fasteners.
  • With overlaid embossed details, pos. 6. Nowadays, technologically, it may be easier to cut, because on a tree looks quite appropriate acc. painted commercial polyurethane relief.
  • With low convex thread, pos. 7 - looks great, but very time consuming, you need to choose a lot of wood.
  • With low indented thread, pos. 8 - less laboriousness, but the work is more difficult, because it is very difficult to fix visible flaws.

Note: on pos. 8 shows the platband with the so-called. pillow carving - the corners of the protruding fragments are smoothed. Platbands with pillow carvings look almost as luxurious as with convex ones, but they are also laborious in almost the same way.

As for the colorful decor, the platbands can be painted, pos. 3, unpainted varnished, pos. 4, or natural, pos. 7, painted in different colors on the levels, pos. 5, 6, and painted entirely, pos. 8. Painted almost exclusively carved platbands are made, and natural ones are made of especially resistant types of wood ( bog oak etc.)

About sculpture of platbands

In general, the platbands with sculptural carvings, high (round, semicircular) and low, see fig., Could not have been mentioned in the article with the tag “do it yourself”. Anyone who knows how to cut wood in this way does not need an explanation of how to make and put a platband on the window. But there is one point that is little known to experienced craftsmen.

MDF - have you heard? In fact, it is tracing paper with MDF, medium density fiberboard, medium density wood board. The well-known fiberboard is a low density fiberboard, low density wood board. And there is also HDF, high density fiberboard, fiberboard high density, we have little known due to the relative high cost. All these materials are quite environmentally friendly, because obtained by hot pressing of wood pulp without a synthetic binder, the difference is only in the temperature and pressure of the press.

So, HDF, firstly, under the condition of 2-fold impregnation with a water-polymer emulsion, is resistant in outdoor conditions. And in terms of viscosity and density, it is suitable for fine wood carving, but much cheaper than wood species for artistic carving and is produced in large, absolutely homogeneous plates. HDF is not cut as well as walnut, but quite similar to oak and beech.

Salary

The complete set of elements of the Russian platband frame is shown on the left in fig; the names of its parts are also given there. In specific products, certain modules may be absent, because they duplicate each other in significance.

The main sacred value is the little mansion with a kokoshnik and an apron; informative and functional load is carried, as a rule, by headboards and overhangs. A tympanum with an apron usually protects against evil, and a kokoshnik with a garment, vestments and a window sill are talismans that attract good. Specific figures for both were in old Russia, not only in every village, but in almost every house. Common to good is a circle with radii, rays or wings (the Sun), a bird (the firebird is the heir of either a phoenix or a simurg), a horse is a symbol of prosperity and social status, and a fish is the original positive symbol of Christianity. Universal amulets from evil - a stylized floral ornament based on useful plants.

Note: the wing, as the part of the bird that carries it in the sky, has the same sacred meaning as the bird. The Winged Sun is a good messenger. The Christian six-winged seraphim is nothing more than a pagan winged Sun with an angelic face.

In the European-Eastern tradition, the universal symbols of goodness are a cartouche and a medallion. The medallion, of course, is the Sun, and the cartouche is either a stylized tree of life, or there is a phoenix on it. Both do not in the least contradict Christianity and ancient Slavic beliefs. In Russia, they even undertook to combine the cartouche with a medallion, for which the teremets of the platband was made split, on the right in Fig.

Amulets

In the city, the most important were the amulet on the tympanum and the kokoshnik, they were from damage, the evil eye, etc. The patterns of the upper amulets of the window casing of the city house are given in Fig. The upper one has a cartouche, stylized birds, fishes (the tails are clearly visible) and no less than 12 more positive elements that are noticeable to a knowledgeable person.

The lower one is more for adherents of primordial beliefs. There, in a stylized solar circle, there is a certain ancient Slavic deity. Which is not entirely clear, but definitely good. Good is trampling on evil in the form of a serpent: note that the lower elements of this board are asymmetrical.

In the countryside, and even more so in the forest, it was considered necessary to protect oneself equally from the upper (evil eye, slander, etc.) and lower evil: creeping reptiles and forest scum. To help in this were called platbands with a weighted or heavy apron, equal in height or greater than the upper amulet. An example of the upper and lower planks of the casing-bereginia with a weighted apron of a village house is given in Fig. You can try to decipher it yourself.

Ornament

Ornaments of window frames are usually built on the basis of the so-called. rapports - elements self-adjoining in one direction, forming a linear seamless pattern, on the left in Fig. Changing the size and number of rapports, you can quickly develop a slotted casing for any window. By combining only 2-3 rapports, it is possible to obtain a wide variety of patterns; stencils of several types of fully conjugated rapports are given on the right in Fig.

The pattern rapports do not have to completely match each other, this will make the pattern visually more complex and effective. For example, the pattern of the top row on the trail. rice. is constructed by turning "upside down" of each subsequent fragment relative to the previous one. The rapporteurs of the rest of the ornaments in Fig. are conjugated either along broken lines or along curved lines (marked in red).

Note 5: the design of the corners of frame platbands with the usual end elements for rapport lines is often difficult, there is simply not enough space at the corner. In such a case on the trail. rice. templates of isosceles ornamental ends are given. Turning 45 degrees, you can build linear ornaments from them. These details are best cut from plywood, see at the end.

Thread

If you want to make yourself unique carved platbands, then the main difficulty along the way is the selection of the tool. In addition to flat chisels for 5, 10, 16/18 and 24 mm (pos. A in the figure), you will need oblique ones of the same widths, but always in pairs - right and left, pos. B. Corner chisels will be enough 6, 12 and 18/24 mm at an angle of 90 degrees, pos. V.

Much more semicircular chisels are required, pos. D: to start with 4, 8, 13 and 16 mm normal, with the depth of the gutter equal to its width. 4 and 8 mm chisels will also need deep chisels, the so-called. U-shapes, and 13 and 16 mm are also sloping.

For fine artistic carving, you will also need curved chisels-cranberries, normal, sloping and angled by 60 degrees, pos. D1, D2, D3. For pillow carving, you can not do without reverse cranks for smoothing corners, pos. D2a. The minimum required sizes are marked in pos. D red.

You need to look for chisels for wood carving in art stores, but buying all the initially necessary randomly will be very expensive. It is better to immediately take a set for wood carving, but not for a thin sculptural one of 40-60 objects (pos. E), it will not be cheaper, and at first it will simply not be clear to you what to do with most of these tools. You need to take a set for beginners of 12-15 items, pos. Well, it will only be necessary to buy knives-jambs at 90 and 60 degrees (shown by arrows in pos. E). With tools from such a set, it will be possible to refine the cut-out overhead elements and perform a rather thin geometric carving, see fig.:

Note: if you have the opportunity to use a manual milling machine for wood, then the cut or slotted platband can be significantly improved visually by running a curly chamfer along its edge with a profile cutter - a hammer, see fig. on right.

Plywood

The crappy packaging plywood, after 2 times impregnation with a water-polymer emulsion, becomes suitable for medium-level artistic carving, and under painting with water dispersion paint and varnished with acrylic varnish, it turns out to be resistant on the outside, like an oak. But what is even more important - the strength of plywood, in contrast to boards, is practically equal in all directions. The minimum thickness of 30 mm required for the platband is 5 layers of plywood and 5 levels of platband decoration. Thus, it is possible to make platbands of plywood, visually almost not inferior to the masterpieces of the masters of the past; compare left and center in fig.

Antique carved platbands, modern plywood platbands and plywood jigsaw

but hand jigsaw cutting so much plywood for a long time and inaccurately will turn out, and a jigsaw for such a thin lace is unacceptably rough. We need a jigsaw, it is also a stationary jigsaw, on the right in Fig. Branded jigsaw machines are expensive, but they can be made with your own hands from a manual jigsaw (which does not deteriorate from this and remains suitable for basic work), an old sewing machine, and other methods, see for example. track. video.

Video: homemade jigsaw for wood carving

Note: machine tools from sewing machines the safest and may not be electrified if the machine is foot operated. In this case, the frequency of the saw strokes can be regulated in an elementary way without any electronics: you just need to jerk your legs more or less often.

If inside the house you can afford the most different variants interior design, the outside possibilities are significantly limited. In addition to the original paint color of the walls or the material with which you can decorate it, it is difficult to come up with something else. In the old days, this issue was solved with the help of window frames, which served as a real decoration of any house, showed the skill of the owner or master-creator. This tradition has survived to this day, although it has partially changed.

Peculiarities

Platbands were traditionally used in wooden houses. They helped to decorate the windows and effectively complement the composition of the facade. With the help of such elements, you can visually increase the window opening or reduce it. Initially, great importance was attached to the design of the house, each owner strove to show the individuality of his structure.

With the help of platbands, you can achieve different effects.

  • Visual decoration of the house, giving it a special flavor and charm, the ability to distinguish it from a number of standard ones.
  • Giving the window a different shape using platbands of different configurations, sizes and patterns. A small window can be made large if you use openwork designs.
  • Creation of a holistic composition of all elements of the facade. The use of the same platbands on windows and doors allows you to complete the design of the house.

With the help of platbands, you can protect window openings from the negative influence of factors environment. The seam between the frame and the house can have small gaps, into which moisture gets in during rain, and dirt gets clogged with strong winds. All this contributes to the development of harmful microorganisms that destroy wood. Therefore, the frame begins to let air through, which significantly reduces its thermal insulation qualities.

The platbands cover that very gap and do not allow moisture or dirt to get to it. In addition to the obvious advantages of platbands, there are also negative factors. It is also worth knowing about them when planning the installation of such parts on windows. wooden house. These include several factors.

  • Active reaction of decorative elements to weather conditions, which contributes to the deterioration of the material. To prevent this from happening, you need to treat the products with a special substance, which significantly increases the service life of the platband.
  • The need for constant care. Platbands need to be painted or varnished annually. If this is not done, then the product begins to crack. As a result, instead of decoration, it will only spoil the appearance of the house.
  • When planning the manufacture of platbands, you need to choose the right material for them. If this is not done, then it is unlikely that the desired effect will be achieved. If it is difficult to cope with such a task alone, it is better to enlist the support of a professional.

Now there are products from modern materials, which can have the most varied appearance. Moreover, caring for them is much easier. They are not affected by the environment, they are not afraid of moisture and even cold. They do not crack from time to time and serve reliably for many years. For connoisseurs of aesthetics, this is not the best option. But for those who want to decorate their home, diversify the appearance of the facade, this is what you need. It is such a product that will create the necessary appearance, while not requiring increased attention to itself.

Kinds

The species diversity of platbands is enormous. It also lies in the drawings that are applied to the tree, the shape of the product itself. Besides modern technologies allow you to create window decorative elements from a wide variety of materials.

If we talk about appearance and patterns, then there are several types.

  • Slotted, through which you can create graceful and beautiful images.
  • Openwork, which are distinguished by bizarre shapes that can distinguish the hand of the master from other options. They look like a solid canvas on which they create a pattern.
  • Carved capable of creating a unique appearance and protecting the window opening.
  • Overhead, which have a structure of complex shape, since the carved element is superimposed on the plate. Such products can be created separately or as decoration for existing platbands. In this way, it is convenient to update existing decorative elements.
  • Simple ones that have a smooth surface... There are no patterns on them. In shape, such elements can be different (with rounded edges, even, narrow and wide).

When choosing a material for a casing, it is important to understand that it should serve as a window protection, and therefore you should not rush to buy material without knowing its features.

The most popular decorative platbands are made of wood. They fit beautifully into the design of the facade of a wooden house, so they still do not lose their relevance. In order for such parts to serve as long as possible and correctly perform the tasks assigned to it, they must be properly processed.

If you do such a treatment, the tree will not rot, moisture will not damage it. In order for the wooden platbands to remain beautiful for a long time and decorate the house, it is best to open them with varnish. Today there are Alternative option, which can also replace varnish. It is a wax based substance. Both options preserve the appearance of the wood, give it a more elegant look, significantly extending the life of the platbands.

In addition to wood, there are also decorative items for windows made of other materials.

MDF

The MDF panel has a laminated coating. Usually, such platbands have the form of a strip with a pattern imitating natural wood. There can be a lot of colors and textures, you can easily choose a frame for the window opening of any wooden house.

Plastic panels

Products from plastic panels are considered the most modern, because they are easy and convenient to care for. This option can be chosen by those people who do not have time to take care of their own home, but want to see a beautiful structure that can be admired. Most often, plastic trims are used for metal-plastic windows... However, recent trends have shown that they are well combined with wooden structures and fully fulfill their task.

Polyurethane

Polyurethane platbands can also be used on windows in wooden homesteads. They are lightweight and deformable, which makes it possible to bend them in the right direction. It is quite simple to install such elements, and the terms of their operation will delight anyone.

Pvc

PVC products are considered the most common at the moment. You can find varieties of such platbands in white and a wide variety of color variations. The product is installed from the street side, it easily copes with any weather conditions. The advantages are the abundance of colors and shapes that can be imparted to such a material.

Styrofoam

Styrofoam can also be used as a material for the manufacture of platbands. For this purpose, a dense variation is suitable, which will not be as strong as a metal trim. This is the reason that such products are not used in countries with high seismic activity, where even the slightest vibrations of the earth's crust would cause cracks on the windows. The color of such decorative elements is white, but with the help of paint you can change it by choosing the one that suits the estate.

Metal

There are also metal platbands, which of all are considered to be of the highest quality in terms of protecting windows from environmental influences. For their production, sheets of metal with a small thickness are required, which makes it possible to manufacture structures of various shapes. The advantage of this option over the same plastic is the resistance of the material to mechanical damage. This makes the service life longer.

To give a fresh and interesting look, iron products can be painted and the appearance of the house will be immediately transformed. The popularity of this type of product is also created by the price, which is quite low considering all positive qualities material.

To install metal products, it is extremely important to correctly measure the window in order to install them without much difficulty. If you want to install unusual metal platbands, you can order carvings that will look interesting on the facade of the house.

Inside, you can also provide for something similar in order to create a holistic image of the building on each side. Usually, the outer and inner platbands are quite different from each other. This is due to their functions. Facade decorative elements must combine aesthetics and quality. Otherwise, they would hardly have been used to decorate the premises.

The use of platbands on the windows of a wooden house should give the structure a complete look, make it more beautiful. Therefore, simple glossy panels are unlikely to be able to fully cope with such a task. It is best to pick up the carvings or make your own.

With a complete lack of skills in working with wood, it is better to choose the first option. But for lovers of manual labor and original products, the ideal solution would be to work on a sketch.

The first step is to decide on the choice of the pattern that will be on the casing. For this, you can use books, the Internet. You can come up with a sketch yourself. As soon as the ideal option is found, you need to scale it up and print it out. All patterns should be cut and accurately transferred to cardboard, with which the main work will already be. The piece of cardboard should fit one piece of the casing.

It must be placed on a piece of wood and outlined with a pencil drawing, along which the clipping will go in the future. In order to choose the right drawing on the casing, it is worth making a drawing of the whole house using all the decorative elements. If the finished version turned out to be beautiful, and all the parts are in harmony with each other, then the idea was chosen correctly, you can start implementing it.

Suitable for some houses simple options platbands (for example, if the estate was envisaged in the style of minimalism during construction).

If you want to create something grandiose and beautiful, you need to choose wide bars and start creating. For the manufacture of good platbands, it is best to choose pine (especially those planks where there are practically no knots). As tools that will come in handy in the process of work, you need to have a jigsaw with a smooth start in order to manually cut out all the necessary parts. In addition, the following will come in handy:

  • pen drill with a diameter of 12 mm;
  • screwdriver;
  • Sander.

The active process of working on window trims begins immediately after the entire drawing is transferred to the future product. First, they take up the inside of the picture, making openwork details. To make the process more convenient, using a drill, you need to make several holes in the board, which will be located on the outline of the drawing. Cutting out the pattern itself is done using a jigsaw, which is inserted into the finished hole. Further, they simply lead along the contour, cutting out the necessary part.

Once interior drawing is ready, you can proceed to the outside. You need to make two cuts (at the beginning and at the end of the product) to make it easier to navigate the work.

It is important to cut out in one motion, without stopping, so that the finished platband turns out to be as curly as possible. This sequence of actions is inherent in every detail in overall design platband on the window leaf.

The resulting product is far from what it should be. Therefore, you need to use grinder, clean up all irregularities and roughness. Only after this stage is part of the structure treated with special solutions. After that, it can be ready to use or paint for a more original look.

How to do it yourself?

Making platbands for a wooden house with your own hands is much more interesting than a banal purchase of such elements in a store, because you can choose the pattern that will meet the spirit of the owners themselves and emphasize the facade design desired by the residents of the house.

You can pick up a wide variety of options.

  • Flat cornice... In this case, the platbands symbolize the wealth and style of the house. They are used for beautiful and elegant buildings, made in a simple style.
  • Arched top. Platbands, which are complemented by an arch on top, will be an ideal complement to window openings, having not a standard rectangular shape, but a rounded top.
  • Using patterns and carvings. Platbands of such a plan can give the house elegance, make it unusual and beautiful.
  • Using hinged elements. These are the details that are added to the product after it has been completed. In this way, you can add something that you did not manage to do initially. The use of hinged parts makes the structure more voluminous and more interesting.

If you are going to make the platbands yourself, you need to choose the right material for the future product. It is important to choose a color based on the colors of each component of the house, to find the ideal decoration option of this product... You can take advantage of the offers that are in hardware stores and buy a ready-made version, which is much easier and faster. The installation of such a platband will be easier, since it already contains all the necessary fasteners, and also provides ease of installation.

If you have a firm intention to do everything yourself, there are several options for making beautiful platbands.

  • Slotted option- a product that has an inner pattern and a beautiful border. Traditionally, such a platband has a white or light color, it is attached to buildings with a contrasting wall shade.
  • Overhead thread type created by cutting out individual elements and gluing them or nailing them onto a solid wooden canvas that will serve as a casing. This design option makes the drawing three-dimensional and airy at the same time. With the help of such overlays, you can decorate any platband.

If the house already has carved platbands, but they require repair, you can remove all or part of the structure and restore it. If it is not possible to repair some part, you can remove it completely, replace it with a new one. If there is a need to make completely new structures for windows, you need to prepare all the necessary inventory, which includes:

  • jigsaw;
  • plane;
  • grinder;
  • cutter;
  • sandpaper;
  • strips with a section of 30x100 mm.

This is what you need to create simple platbands. To start work, it is necessary to process all future details with a plane, and then use a cutter to give them a finished look. In order for the product to have a presentable appearance, it is sanded with sandpaper. This is the simplest option for making platbands, which does not require great skills and abilities. If you want to make something original and beautiful, you should choose a carved type of product. For such work, you need to add curly chisels to the main inventory.

For the manufacture of the casing, you can use two technologies (conventional and invoice). In the first version, the cutout of the pattern goes on the strip of the casing itself. In the second, it is done on an additional bar, which is then attached over the main element.

For your first attempts at cutting wood, it is best to choose the simplest patterns so that you can easily cope with them.

If the platband is made with an overhead option, then the work process will go in the following sequence:

  • processing planks with a planer;
  • preparation of overhead strips with a thickness of at least 10 cm;
  • the formation of the future drawing on cardboard and its cutting;
  • transfer of a drawing from a stencil to an overhead strip;
  • with a drill you need to make holes throughout the picture;
  • with the help of a chisel, you need to finish all the carved elements;
  • grinding the finished lining;
  • fastening the lining to the casing with glue or self-tapping screws;
  • collection of every detail of the casing;
  • installation of a finished structure on a window opening.

Installation of finished structures on the window can be carried out using nails, screws or glue. Most often, platbands are placed on the sides and on top of the window, sometimes there are lower parts of the structure. In order to correctly and aesthetically dock the edges of each part, they need to be cut at an angle of 45 degrees using a hacksaw or a miter box. If the wall is concrete, dowels and screws are needed for reliable fastening.

To decorate the window beautifully country house, you need to know not only the basic information, but also some of the nuances, without which it may not be possible to create a truly wonderful example of manual creativity. Several factors relate to such moments.

  • When choosing boards for the manufacture of platbands, it is better to give preference to those options, the thickness of which will be 3-4 cm. It is much more difficult to work with thicker materials, especially to perform curly cutting.
  • When starting work on carving platbands for the first time, it is worth taking a simple pattern and polishing it, after which you can try something more complex and interesting.
  • In addition to the thickness of the wood for the platbands, it is worth taking care of the correct selection of its width, because the main purpose of these elements is not so much in the decor as in the protection of the window.

The platband should cover the opening between the wall and the window frame.

  • When planning to cut out any drawings, it is worth positioning them correctly on the board so that they go along the grain of the tree, and not across.
  • When choosing a drawing for the first attempts at carving platbands, you should look at something large with convex shapes, which will not be difficult to do, and the result will delight you with its beauty. If you choose a small ornament, in case of an unsuccessful outcome, the platband will look sloppy. This will spoil the impression of external facade Houses.

Making platbands on the facade of a house is a long process and requires perseverance. Therefore, it is worthwhile to clearly assess your strengths before taking on work. Choice suitable material, the desired pattern, its successful implementation in life is only half the battle. This is followed by an equally laborious process of processing the platbands so that they serve long enough, while performing their functions efficiently.

The final stage of work with these decorative elements is their installation. At each stage there is a certain choice, the result of all the work depends on the correctness of its acceptance.

Beautiful examples

When planning the manufacture or purchase of platbands for a wooden house, it is worth choosing the option that is best suited for a particular building.

With the help of the Internet and other sources of information, you can see sketches of drawings, ready-made works, which will give food for thought.

Installation of plastic windows should be done in such a way that the window is flush with the wall. In order to mask the resulting joint, special metal, wooden or plastic platbands are most often used on plastic windows and slopes, which can be bought almost everywhere for a very small price.

Types of platbands

The platband on PVC windows made of plastic, metal or other material should not only mask the joint resulting from the installation of a plastic window, but also fit into the overall design. To do this, there are a huge number of varieties of platbands for a slope or window made of metal, plastic and wood, among which the following main types can be distinguished:

  1. Flat platbands for slopes or exterior cladding made of plastic. This option is the most popular due to its low cost and availability. Installation of such platbands for the street or slopes does not require a lot of effort, so you can install them yourself. Flat window trims are suitable for those who prefer laconicism in the interior.
  2. Platbands for shaped-type windows differ in that they have a relief surface. They can be made from wood or from another material that imitates it, for example, from plastic. Shaped-type platbands for windows are most suitable for people who love originality and non-standard solutions in interior design. The price will depend on the material from which the product will be made and on its complexity. Wooden platbands will cost more than their plastic counterparts.
  3. Profiled window frames. They differ from flat models in that their outer side is convex. Such platbands are more expensive than flat ones, but they are considered more stylish.
  4. Carved window frames. Such models are the most expensive. And this is not surprising, because they are practically works of art. In the photo of wooden houses, you can often see carved frames on windows installed from the side of the street, made in different colors that look very nice. And if earlier wood was used as a material for their manufacture, now more and more plastic frames are found on windows in wooden house carved.

Plastic window frames

Plastic window trims have a number of advantages:

  • Unlike a wooden platband, plastic does not rot, mold and is not affected by fungus;
  • The plastic casing on the plastic window is waterproof, so it successfully protects the window structure from moisture penetration through the mounting gaps;
  • Unlike metal, plastic window casing does not corrode;
  • Plastic platband is inexpensive;
  • Plastic window trims can be not only white. Carved PVC platbands, made under a tree, look like real wood in the photo, and their price is much lower;
  • Installing a plastic casing on a slope or window allows you to increase the heat-insulating and sound-insulating properties of the window structure;
  • White or colored plastic trims for plastic windows from the street look very aesthetically pleasing and organic;
  • The plastic casing is strong, durable, practically does not deform;
  • Installation of plastic frames on window slopes is simple;
  • It is easy to care for the PVC casing: if it gets dirty, it is enough to wipe it with a damp cloth;
  • Plastic frames for windows, unlike metal ones, are lightweight, so you can install them on a window structure using ordinary double-sided tape.

Window platbands can be simple overhead or be part of a structure consisting of elements and locks. In the second option, PVC trim is often used for the slope. Examples of plastic platbands can be seen in the photo

Metal frames for windows

Metal window trims are most often made of sheet metal of small thickness.

Advantages of metal platbands:

  • the resistance of metal platbands to mechanical damage is much higher than that of plastic platbands;
  • Metal platbands are durable;
  • Metal window frames can be of various shapes;
  • If necessary, metal platbands can be painted;
  • Affordable cost of metal frames for windows.

In order for the installation of metal frames on windows to occur without problems, it is very important to make all measurements accurately. Otherwise, the metal profile will have to be cut by hand, and making an even cut yourself is quite difficult.

Metal window frames can be carved. Such metal products will be able to decorate the window structure of a wooden house or apartment and at the same time will serve for a long time.

Materials for the manufacture of platbands

  1. Tree. For the decoration of PVC windows on wooden houses from the street side, platbands made of wood are often used. In the photo you can see the wooden platbands on the windows, painted in different colors that look very organic. The disadvantages of the material include instability to moisture and fire, susceptibility to deformation, and decay. Among the advantages are environmental friendliness, ease of processing and aesthetic appearance, especially on wooden houses.
  2. Metal. The second name of metal window trims is trims. The material of manufacture is thin metal sheets... Metal window trims are easy to process, which significantly expands their range. Among other advantages, there are excellent performance characteristics of metal products and the ability to paint the surface of metal platbands in any color. Beautiful ornate metal platbands will especially decorate a wooden house. Photos of metal frames for windows can be viewed below.
  3. PVC. White and colored PVC trims for window slopes are the most common. This is due large quantity advantages of plastic platbands with almost complete absence of disadvantages. The plastic casing, installed from the street side, easily withstands any weather conditions. The photo shows that the plastic casing can be made in various shapes and colors.
  4. Polyurethane. Window platbands made of this material, in comparison with PVC platbands, are more durable. Polyurethane trims for plastic windows can withstand even very low temperatures and prevent snow and rain from getting into the house from the street.
  5. Dense foam. Such platbands for plastic windows have low mechanical strength, especially when compared with metal ones, therefore they are especially rarely used in countries with a high probability of earthquakes. The white foam plastic casing on the window can be painted in any color if desired.

How to install platbands correctly

Metal, plastic and wooden platbands on plastic windows and slopes can be attached in several ways. The most common way is installation using mounting elements. First, the upper platband is attached, and then all the rest. Installation is done joint to joint so that the window structure looks neat from the street.

Methods for attaching platbands to plastic windows

  • PVC platbands on windows can be fixed with double-sided tape. However, a plastic casing installed in this way may not withstand strong gusts of wind;
  • Installation of a platband made of metal, wood or plastic on a plastic window can be done using mounting elements. This method of fastening the platband to plastic windows is the most popular;
  • Installation of metal and plastic trims on PVC windows using an adhesive is not the best option due to low bond strength.

Below you can watch a video of how to install PVC trim on windows with your own hands.

DIY window frames

It is not difficult to make PVC frames for windows. Plastic casing on plastic windows is usually installed using fasteners, so we will consider this particular option.

  1. The height and width of the plastic window frame are measured. To the obtained values, two widths of the future plastic casing for the window are added.
  2. Next, you need to buy a plastic sheet. Horizontal and vertical parts of the plastic casing are cut out of it onto a plastic window of the required width.
  3. After the plastic trims have been cut out, a 45 ° cut must be made at their ends. Thus, the joining of the parts of the plastic casing will be carried out along the entire perimeter of the plastic window.

It is not very difficult to make wooden platbands with your own hands, but hardware making it at home is unlikely to work.

Platbands are not only a beautiful decorative element, as many are accustomed to believe. Often, their functionality is much more than just a pleasant appearance and aesthetics. And they do not always have a bright appearance that immediately catches the eye.

Platbands are needed primarily in order to protect the window from adverse influences and improve insulation in the house. Therefore, in fact, they are often necessary.

Nowadays, for the most part, platbands are in themselves a beautiful component that makes the house more beautiful and livelier. But protection is still their main purpose. The window frame is susceptible to various damage, and assembly work by inserting it into the wall of the house, they leave behind an unpleasant-looking crack.

Platbands hide all defects. And they are also able to provide warmth in the house, since their presence greatly prevents its loss.

Perhaps a structure made of brick or concrete is not so susceptible to this, but wood tends to deform after some time. For this reason, gaps can appear. Platbands are extremely helpful in this regard: the process slows down.

Kinds

Platbands today are very diverse in appearance. Can be distinguished based on the material from which they were created. But basically there are two types.

Overhead

This option is older, but you shouldn't dismiss it now. The installation method is quite simple: it is done on top of the frame.

Little effort is required, but this type of platbands helps enough: it does not allow the penetration of both sunlight and precipitation. The joints are reliably protected due to this.

Telescopic

This modern type, which the Lately used quite often. You don't need additional materials in the form of screws or the same nails. Such platbands are placed just in the cracks. This ensures a secure fixation of it as a whole.

Priority should still be given to the second type. But to install it, you need to remove the windows. It is not always convenient to do this, if not impossible at all, therefore they often resort to the first one. But, we must admit, the telescopic platband is much more convenient to use.

Materials (edit)

The first thing that comes to mind is a tree. Wood is practical in itself, and it always looks natural and beautiful. Such a platband is universal; you can arrange it in different ways.

Plus, in private houses, it is the tree that usually looks very useful. Any photo of platbands on windows in a wooden house will confirm this fact. Moreover, if the structure itself is made of wood, then the same material can be used on the platbands. This will help to combine well with one another. The color can be slightly changed if desired.

Indeed, this option is often used. Others require additional costs in the form of special processing. And they are rarely decorated. But in fact, platbands can be made of plastic or MDF.

Let's remember all the same about the cons of wood. Moisture will not do better, and it does not have strong frost resistance. But plastic in this regard is much more reliable. Now you can do anything you want, including making it look like a tree, so that it looks the most natural.

Such material will not deform and will last much longer than wood. And fastening it is much more pleasant: the platbands will not need to be rammed with screws. But still, plastic is an artificial material, no matter how it looks. Not every owner wants to use it, as this will reduce the environmental friendliness of his house.

And here you can turn to the third option, MDF. In fact, this is the same tree, only processed with a certain composition. Such platbands are distinguished by their naturalness, but at the same time, they are also reliable. Accordingly, they are able to last much longer than a tree.

Here, however, there is also a minus - they are not durable. Both plastic and wood have a much higher strength in comparison with them. You need to decide what material to use, based on your own wishes.

Preparing for installation

First you need to accurately measure the window. Size is very important here and it must be measured with extreme precision so that the frame is hidden from view. Only then, when you have taken the necessary measurements, you can start preparing the materials.

If you opted for a tree, then you should first cut out the blanks. You can immediately arrange them in accordance with your wishes. The other two types do not need additional treatment, but the wood must be saturated with a protective solution.

Use only dry lumber. You can seriously damage your own work if it is not dried.

Next, you will need to make notes on the platbands, with the help of which you will need to indicate where the joints and fasteners will be located. It is necessary to drill holes in advance. And then immediately grind the platband.

The place of work should also be given special attention. Remember that you won't be able to get to the joints later. If there are any plans for which they will be needed, be sure to do whatever is necessary before starting the installation.

Overhead platbands can be attached in several ways. It is possible to do this with nails, and possibly with the help of various thorns.

Nails are easy to use, but can harm the overall picture, so spikes are usually preferred. There is a dull thorn and a through. The technology of their application is similar, only the holes when using the second option in the casing have a through character.

Mounting

Now you can start directly with the installation. First you need to assemble the platband, fastening all its parts together. You can use either thorns, or nails, or ordinary glue. The latter, however, is recommended to be used only in addition to the other two.

If you opted for the spikes, then you will need to initially take care of measuring their location and make the necessary holes in advance.

Initially, you will need to mark the perimeter. It is necessary to know exactly the location of all fasteners, as well as to evenly arrange them throughout the structure. Remember that the load must not be uneven.

The installation itself is simple: the platband is placed so that the holes for the spikes coincide with them. Precision is essential in work. A lot depends on the placement of the location of the fasteners, which needs to be taken care of long before. Accordingly, preparation for editing will greatly affect the result in general.

When working, you may need glue. When using it, the risk that the entire structure will simply fall is noticeably reduced. Plus, the insulation of all holes made is improved.

After the installation is completely finished, it remains only to use a certain compound for the holes. This is to prevent moisture from being absorbed.

It is important to remember that you need to follow the design after. If she demands it, then even devote time to additional care for her. Only in this case you will get a decent result at the output.
