Do-it-yourself modern sliding doors. How to make sliding doors - why shouldn't you miss a millimeter? Interior sliding doors

One of the weighty advantages in favor of installing sliding interior doors is their quick and relatively simple installation - it's all about the absence of hinges, the door frame difficult to assemble and no less troublesome installation. In general, if you understand the sliding doors thoroughly, then you can identify a lot of advantages, thanks to which they are preferred.

In this article we will deal with the question of how to make sliding doors do it yourself and tell you how easy and simple the old swing systems are converted into more comfortable sliding ones.

How to make DIY sliding doors: 5 steps

Sliding doors or partitions, you must agree, are very practical solution in many ways, both for small and for large apartments... Zoning space, saving space, the ability to arrange furniture in a certain way are some of the main advantages worth mentioning. However, for most, all the benefits come to naught when it comes directly to cost. I will try to refute the opinion that sliding doors are too expensive, and I suggest you make them yourself.

For work you will need: a door leaf without fittings, wheels, a metal cornice (remember the length of the cornice - it should be at least twice the size of the door itself), metal hinges, paint, nails, screws, a drill.
Step 1: We process the door leaf, grind it, paint it in the preferred color.

Step 2: Using the screws, screw the wheels to the bottom of the door in two places.

Step 3: From above we screw in metal hinges, which should slide freely along the cornice in the future.

Step 4: We attach the cornice to the wall first with one side, then insert it into the hinges and fix the other end of the pipe.

Step 5: For convenience, you can install the door handle. The doors are ready!

DIY sliding doors: going shopping

Before you go to the store for everything you need to make a sliding interior door do it yourself, you need to take a tape measure and take some measurements. In particular, you will need to know the width and height of the existing door leaf - the height is usually standard and is 2000mm, and the width can be 600, 700 or 800mm. Knowing these dimensions, you can already purchase everything you need. And to be specific, you will need to buy the following.
The most important unit, without which the operation of such doors is impossible, is the sliding mechanism. In principle, if you indicate the width of your canvas to the seller, he will select the necessary mechanism for you, but for overall development you need to know that its length should be twice the door leaf. You can buy a slightly longer mechanism - if necessary, it can be easily cut off.
Fittings for sliding interior doors are handles and a lock of a special design, if there is a need for it.

In principle, this is already quite enough to convert an old swing door into a sliding door. But, as they say, everything must be done thoroughly and it is not at all necessary to stop there. You should also think about a brand new door frame (for it you need a rail, the width of which corresponds to the thickness of the wall in doorway- it needs 5m), platbands, a strip that closes the sliding system for doors and a stop strip, if we are talking about sliding interior doors that can be locked. And, of course, a brand new door leaf will come in handy - only in this case can you make a beautiful doorway.
You can pick up and purchase everything you need both on the market and in large hardware stores. The price of the issue is not that high - at least, less than the cost of similar swing doors.
How to make sliding doors: preparing the leaf To prepare the door leaf of a sliding door, you will need either a manual router or a grinder with a drill, hammer and chisel. What will you work with, of course, you choose, but on my own I will add that by hand router all work is carried out more accurately, and most importantly, more accurately. If you imagine the process of preparing the canvas for the installation of sliding doors step by step, it will look like this.
As a warm-up along the bottom end of the door leaf, strictly in the center, you need to cut a groove 3 mm wide - it is necessary for the lower guide to work, which simultaneously serves as a stop and does not allow the leaf to swing back and forth during operation. It is best to do this with a hand router, but this work can also be done with a grinder, equipping it with a circle on a tree with a fine tooth. Now we print the sliding mechanism and find a pair of rollers and brackets in the kit. First, we connect the rollers with brackets - for this, the latter have holes in which the former are attached by means of two nuts and washers. Now we take the resulting nodes and attach them to the upper end of the door leaf and outline their contours, after which we select the grooves with a depth that is equal to the thickness of the metal of the brackets. And then, using a screwdriver and self-tapping screws, we fasten the rollers to the canvas. In principle, you can do without inserting staples into the end of the canvas - if you just screw them to the end, then appearance doors will suffer less than if you cut the grooves, especially if this work is done with a hammer and chisel.

Now you need to install the lock.

Finally, you will need to install special handles for sliding doors - you will also have to cut out either two grooves on both sides of the canvas for them, or one oblong through hole. With the latter, it will be easier - we drill a small through hole in the canvas, insert an electric jigsaw blade into it and cut out the seat in accordance with the predetermined contour.

With the canvas, the work is completed, now we turn to the sliding mechanism and the installation of sliding doors.

Installation of doors: installation of a sliding mechanism and its connection to the door leaf

The sliding mechanism is installed quite simply - all that is required here is to fix the guide profile in accordance with the horizon level and the location of the doorway. There are only a couple of nuances here.
The edge of the guide should protrude 50mm from one side of the opening. On the other side of the opening (from the one into which the canvas will open), the profile should go exactly the width of the canvas. This moment needs to be calculated and cut, if necessary, the door guide. Installation height of the sliding mechanism - calculations are also needed here. This installation dimension consists of two components - the height of the door leaf together with the rollers inclusive and the gap under the door, which is 10-20 mm (depending on the curvature of the floor).

The installation itself, or rather the distance of the guide from the wall.

Here again, everything depends on the curvature of the walls - if they are even, then the guide, without any additions, is attached directly to the wall through holes pre-drilled in it. If the wall is curved, then you may need to move the guide away from it some distance - in this case, a wooden rail is first attached to the wall, and only then the guide is fixed on it. You can clearly see the installation process of the sliding door in this video.
The door leaf is installed on the guide quite simply - the rollers are inserted into it from the side. After the door takes the required position, it will be necessary to attach a stop to the floor, under which we chose a long groove from the bottom of the door leaf. We open the door to the maximum so that they do not fly out, inside the guide with a self-tapping screw for metal, first we attach a rubber cushion, which is a limiter, and then we put a stop halfway into the lower groove of the canvas and attach it to the floor with dowels on one side. Now we move the canvas towards the closing side, select its desired position and again fasten the upper limiter of the canvas travel first, and then finally fix the floor stop with two more dowels.

In conclusion, I will say a few words about the design of the opening itself - without this stage of work, the installation of sliding interior doors will be incomplete. A kind of door frame is twisted from a 10-20mm thick rail and a width corresponding to the thickness of the wall, which is mounted in the opening with the help of polyurethane foam. When the polyurethane sealant is dry, trims are installed on both sides of the box. If you plan to install a door with a lock, then instead of one of the platbands, a thrust bar with a groove for the canvas is placed. The counterpart of the lock is also mounted in the same stubborn bar.
That's all. It only remains to add that the opening itself can be designed in different ways, and the wooden lath is not a panacea. For example, laminate flooring looks good enough in this place (it is also mounted on foam), a harmoniously selected natural stone or ordinary one also looks good enough tile... In general, there is something to think about here, and the choice of materials for decorating the opening depends solely on your preferences.

There are times when an ordinary swing door cannot be installed due to insufficient space or design features rooms (small area). Things and furniture can also interfere and do not allow it in normal mode (it does not open completely, etc.), then a door on rollers comes to the rescue, which you can install with your own hands.

This door opening mechanism has its pros and cons, which can be summarized as follows:

Advantages:

  • Can be used for any interior door, except for the option when it is completely made of glass.
  • The ability to open in both directions in relation to the doorway.
  • In small rooms - makes it possible to use in a limited space.
  • Easy to operate, allows people with disabilities to use it.
  • There is no sagging of the door leaves during their operation.
  • Long service life.
  • The ability to create systems that provide automatic operation.
  • Lack of thresholds (for some models).

Flaws:

  • High cost in comparison with swing counterparts.
  • Low level of protection against heat loss and low sound insulation.
  • The possibility of using the wall surface in the direction of moving the door leaf decreases (installing furniture and household appliances, hanging decor elements and decorating the room space).
  • For doors with heavy weight (solid wood, metal doors) the service life is significantly lower than when used with light materials.
  • Not suitable for all types of interior decorated in a certain style (Provence, Baroque, Empire).

How does a door equipped with a roller mechanism work?

In order to understand how the roller mechanism works, you need to figure out what it consists of.

All types of roller mechanisms have two main elements:

  • Rollers placed on a specific structural element with holes for attachment to the door leaf.
  • Guides along which the rollers move.

Rollers mounted on a specific structural element (straight or complex plate) are attached to the door leaf, guides are mounted in the doorway.

The door leaf with fixed rollers is hung on the guides. With mechanical impact directed to the side in relation to the doorway, the rollers roll along the guides, thereby the door opens.

There are two ways to install the roller mechanism, these are:

  • Suspension system, when the rollers move along the guide, which is located in the upper part of the doorway and the door leaf is suspended.
  • Rail system, when the rollers move along the guides located in the upper and lower (on the floor) parts of the doorway. The door leaf is rigidly fixed.

In addition to the main elements, door fixing devices, materials providing heat and sound insulation, as well as decorative elements covering the roller mechanism can be used in the design of the roller mechanism.

Doors can be equipped with a roller mechanism different types such as: accordion, coupe, cascade and radius type. These can be single-leaf and multi-leaf structures.

Varieties of sliding doors

As mentioned above, various types of doors can be equipped with a roller mechanism, therefore, in order to understand how they work, it is necessary to consider all of them.

Accordion type

This type of door has a sliding-folding design, when, when the door leaf is moved to the side, its component parts are folded.

Depending on the number of folding elements, doors of this type are also called "books", in this case two fragments are added. When talking about the "accordion" type - there are more than two folding elements.

The folding elements of the door leaf are interconnected by means of a hinge joint, which ensures their coupling.

Doors of the "accordion" type are single and double leaf.

Coupe type

In structures of this type, the door leaf moves along the wall along the guides installed on this wall.

Doors of the "coupe" type are single-leaf and double-leaf. For double-leaf models, the sashes move in different directions in relation to the doorway.

A variation of this design can be cassette-type doors, when the guide is located inside the doorway and when opened, the door leaf moves into the inner space of the wall.

Type cascade

In this design, the door leaf consists of several component parts, of which one part is rigidly fixed, and the rest (one, two or three parts) move along their own, separate guides.

Door opening occurs when all the parts are assembled on one side of the doorway, and closing occurs when the component parts are evenly spaced along the doorway.

Radius doors

This type defines their shape, which has a certain radius corresponding to the radius of the wall along which they move.

Structurally, these are doors of the coupe type, but of a more complex geometric shape.

Do-it-yourself installation of roller doors can be divided into several stages, which require separate consideration, so that everyone who wants to do this work on their own does not make irreparable mistakes.

Preparation of materials for assembly and installation site

In order for the installation of a door equipped with rollers to be completed successfully, and during operation there were no problems, it is necessary to complete it before starting installation works, a number of requirements, which are:

  1. The doorway must be flat so that the door leaf overlaps it without overlap. If the door frame has a curved shape, you will have to use a larger door leaf.
  2. The structure of the door frame and the wall adjacent to it must be strong to withstand the weight of the structure to be installed.
  3. Before starting the installation, it is necessary to finish the doorway, because otherwise, finishing will be difficult.

When the preparatory work is completed, it remains to prepare the materials necessary for the work:

  • For the manufacture of a door leaf: a wooden block with a cross section of 50x50 mm, plywood or fiberboard, as well as a decorative coating (veneer or self-adhesive film).
  • The movement mechanism is rollers and guides.
  • Accessories and decorative items.
  • Tools required to complete the work: screwdriver, drill, chisel, screwdriver, hammer, wood saw or electric jigsaw.

Door leaf manufacturing

It is quite simple to make a blind-type door leaf, for this you need:

  • Take measurements from the doorway;
  • Using a wooden block, it is necessary to cut out the blanks for making the door frame. The size of the blanks must correspond to the removed dimensions of the doorway.
  • Horizontal ties of the frame (3 pieces) should be equal to the width of the doorway, vertical posts (2 pieces) - the height of the opening.
  • On the vertical bars, cuts are made, from the top and bottom, and a groove is drilled in the middle part, along the length corresponding to the width of the bar used.
  • On horizontal ties, a ridge is made, along the length corresponding to the width of the bar.
  • The assembly of vertical and horizontal bars is carried out according to the "groove - comb" principle, with the laying of wood glue or PVA glue.
  • For the strength of the structure, a hole is drilled in the middle of the connection through the connected bars, into which a wooden spike is inserted.
  • The prepared frame is sheathed with sheet material (fiberboard, plywood, etc.). To fasten it, self-tapping screws for wood or furniture nails are used.
  • When the frame is sheathed, a decorative coating is applied to its surface: the veneer is glued to wood glue or PVA glue, the self-adhesive film is glued to its adhesive base.

Suspension system installation

When the door leaf is ready, you can start installing and assembling the suspension system. The work is carried out in the following sequence:

  • Depending on the design of the suspension system, the rollers can be installed on the edge of the door leaf, or with some indentation. The size that needs to be deviated, if necessary, is indicated by the manufacturers of such systems in the accompanying documents.
  • The marking of the places of installation of the plates on which the rollers are mounted is carried out;
  • The attachment points are drilled, after which the rollers are installed.
  • Installation of guides in progress:
  • Marking is made on the surface of the wall, so that the guide bar (rail) is above the doorway. The size of this indentation depends on the rollers used and their supporting structure.
  • For ease of installation, a bar is used, to which the guide is attached, by means of self-tapping screws.
  • A beam with a guide is attached to the wall surface.
  • When the door leaf is equipped with rollers and the guides are securely fixed to the wall surface, the door is hung. For this, the rollers are inserted into the inner cavity of the guide - they are rolled onto the suspension system.
  • Harness adjustment in progress. To do this, the design provides for adjusting bolts, which allows you to minimize gaps in the horizontal plane between the door leaf and the guide, as well as adjust the lower gap to the floor surface.
  • Fittings are installed, and the guide is closed with decorative elements.

How to choose the right fittings for roller doors

When using doors equipped with a roller-based suspension system, you cannot use the hardware usually installed on swing doors. This is due to the fact that the door leaf must move without touching the surface of the wall or niche into which it moves when it is opened.

The lock used for locking must have a vertical type of latching system.

In addition, the fittings are selected in accordance with the style of the room where it is installed and the personal preferences of the user.

Each user can make do-it-yourself hinged doors on rollers, while the main condition for success in this business will be attentiveness, and the reward is low cost and design, in an individually designed style.

To use the useful living space to the maximum, the owners make sliding interior doors with their own hands. They create a unique design that can both divide the living space into separate sectors and combine them in one room.

The attractiveness and disadvantages of sliding structures

It should be understood in detail what advantages sliding doors have, as well as possible problems that will have to be addressed. Of the advantages, the ability to save space is distinguished, even in an ordinary apartment additional meters will appear. Plus, with such doors, any home acquires individuality and transforms.

Such a design is not subject to drafts. Some options are executed without thresholds, which is important if there are elderly, disabled or small children among the residents. Installation and subsequent use of the sliding partition is simple. Today's technologies provide the ability to automate the product, which adds additional convenience.

Disadvantages can appear if you use the design illiterately. It is necessary to keep the guides and the roller system in good condition and clean at all times. Dirty mechanisms are damaged, the door leaf is jammed. Very poor sound insulation due to cracks brings additional inconvenience. Smells from other rooms will also penetrate through the cracks into living rooms.

It is more difficult to install a sliding door than a swing door; high precision is required. Moving leaves require precise installation between themselves and in relation to the door frame. Many are afraid of the high prices for sliding structures, which cannot be considered an advantage.

Various design options

All hinged doors work on the same principle: they do not swing open, but move along the wall and other door leaves. The execution has several options:

  • traditional using the wardrobe-compartment principle;
  • cascading;
  • in the form of a folding accordion or book;
  • doors moving along radial guides.

Any design allows the use of one, two or more flaps.

Sliding doors are among the simplest in execution, they have many subspecies. It is safer to make them with two - upper and lower - guides for moving the shutters. However, this option is difficult, as it requires an absolutely precise fit of both guides. The bottom rail is attached to the floor where it forms a threshold or hidden in a recess. The big disadvantage is that dust and debris constantly collects there, slowing down and blocking the door. Therefore, it is necessary to constantly clean the lower rail.

Suspended structures consist of one rail at the top, the lower one is not used. The place of fastening of the rails is chosen depending on the height of the door: it can be a wall or a ceiling. The guide is covered by a decorative panel or remains open. The disadvantage of this design can be considered the fact that it is problematic to put furniture or something else against the wall from the side of the door opening.

Cassette doors are available in a suspended version or on two rails. They differ from others in that when the partition is opened, the door leaf is hidden in a niche. In a private house, it is better to plan such a pencil case in advance; in an apartment it is permissible to make it from drywall. Of course, the niche will take up the usable area, but the losses are compensated by good sound insulation. You will have to make many alterations, in addition, the cost of the cassette is added.

The device of cascade doors is carried out with two guides - from the bottom and from the top, each leaf moves along its own rail. The advantages of a system made of sliding doors with your own hands are that you can fence off zones or expand the area to the hall, collecting canvases on one side. For doors, natural glass is often used as a material, the lower guide is embedded in the floor, and the upper one is attached to the ceiling.

Accordions consist of a certain number of canvases on end hinges. The width of the canvases is a multiple of the dimensions of the doorway and is limited by the availability of free space. If an interior accordion partition is planned, the guides are attached to the floor and ceiling. A significant design flaw: very poor heat and sound insulation.

Radius systems are uniquely suitable only for large housing areas. To install it, they create a special semicircular plasterboard profile or buy a ready-made structure. Radial doors work on two guides, their location is available on either side of the opening or in a cassette. The sound and thermal insulation of the structure is excellent, but making it on your own is difficult, without certain skills it is impossible to cope.

Sliding doors fit organically into any interior. They have an amazing ability to transform living space. In practice, sliding partitions are used to zone large spaces. The closed door divides the room into separate zones, and the extended partition returns to the original area.

The experience of using sliding partitions between loggias, terraces and living rooms... The use of glass, which allows light to pass through, is especially effective. The partition, opened in summer, will expand the area immensely, creating a single space. Sliding doors are also used in utility rooms, saving useful space. Sliding structures for separating the kitchen, toilet, bathroom are not used, as odors will penetrate into the living quarters.

Choice of fittings, mechanism and door leaf

The fittings have their own characteristics, determined by the type of sliding door device. The handles are hidden in the door leaf so as not to interfere with the movement of the canvases relative to each other. The recessed handles also allow the door to be easily hidden in the cassette. Locks differ in that they snap the door vertically.

Buying a door leaf in a store has advantages: the product is completed with already installed fittings or it comes separately, but selected specifically for this model. When searching for handles and locks on your own, utmost attention is required so as not to make the wrong choice. It is better to choose fittings with a specialist or from a catalog.

The roller mechanism and guides are selected taking into account the following criteria:

  • constructive option;
  • number of door leaves;
  • door leaf material.

When choosing rollers, the load that the door leaf creates on the entire structure is taken into account. MDF, for example, weighs much less glass, therefore, the carriage rollers in the first version are simplified and cheaper. For a heavy door leaf like glass, you need to install the top and bottom rails. Flawless operation depends on the conformity of the guides and roller mechanisms to the structure, their quality, as well as the accuracy and precision of the installation. For cascading doors, books, compartments, the required number of rollers is taken into account and suitable guides are selected.

Market building materials provides the buyer with a wide selection of canvases from different materials and diversity design solutions... The canvases should be as close as possible to the size of the doorway, taking into account the box. The most acceptable door width is 90 cm, but it can vary between 60-120 cm. Standard height 210 cm, but can be up to 250 cm.

When choosing a product, preference is given to those with low weight: plastic, MDF, laminate, bamboo. Such interior doors are easier to operate; it is possible to use lightweight roller mechanisms. For structures of a large mass like metal, glass, solid wood, a competent, even professional selection of the mechanism and guides is required. You should not purchase a canvas with elements protruding outward, no matter how beautiful they seem. The protrusions can interfere with the free operation of the structure.

How to mount sliding doors - general rules for any design

Various design and the variety of products does not allow dwelling on the features of the installation of each individual type of sliding door with your own hands. But the basics are the same for any kind of door. Having mastered the general rules of how to make do-it-yourself sliding doors from one canvas, it is not difficult to make a sliding product from a larger number of canvases.

Before buying a door leaf, the opening is measured in several places, a wooden frame is made in size and installed. Installed, but not fixed, the box is thoroughly checked for horizontal and vertical, and corrected if necessary. A correctly positioned box is fixed to the wall with anchor bolts, the cracks are blown out polyurethane foam... The desired width of the doorway is 90 cm for one leaf and 120–150 cm for a two-leaf door. With a larger width, you will need to install three or more canvases.

Do-it-yourself installation of a door on rollers begins with determining a place for the upper guide. To calculate it, about 20 mm is added to the height of the door as a gap between the door and the floor and another 7 cm. Two marks are left on the wall on top of the opening, along which a horizontal line is drawn. A timber is attached to the wall, the lower edge of which coincides with the drawn line. A guide is attached to the lower edge of the timber with self-tapping screws, stepping back from the wall by 7 mm.

The guides in length are equal to the total width of the door leaves plus 5 cm for normal door operation.

Next in line is the installation of the roller mechanism, the staples are previously attached to the canvas. There is no need to describe in detail the installation of roller carriages, the process is detailed in the instructions that are supplied with each purchase. On the sides of the door are fastened holders-clips, which the best way suitable for all models, except for the fold-over door in which they are used. Glass products use rubber pads to hold the glass in place. At the same time, you can mount handles and locks, if necessary.

Next, they proceed to the installation of the sashes. It is better if there is an assistant, then one person holds the canvas, and the second guides the carriages in profile. Then the result of the work is checked. If the guides are initially installed strictly horizontally, the door should not move anywhere on its own. The door carriage adjusting bolts are set in the exact vertical position, if the need arises. The movement of the web is checked, which should be light, without jamming. Limiters are installed in the form of special plugs or pins so that the carriages do not come out of the grooves.

For silent and durable door operation, it is better to choose rubber stoppers.

So that the whole structure becomes complete and beautiful view, as well as to ensure the safety of the mechanical part, which can be damaged by dust and dirt, platbands are mounted. Open mechanisms need them, there is no such need for a door in a pencil case.

Making a sliding door with your own hands is not difficult. The main requirement is the utmost precision and accuracy in work. Skillfully applying your talent as a master in practice, you can achieve excellent results the first time.

How to make sliding doors? This is a question for the owners small apartments when renovating or wanting more free space in a small room. Such doors allow dividing the space of the apartment into zones, while maintaining the appearance of the integrity of the volume. To make them yourself, you need to have a little knowledge of the instrument and have at least minimal knowledge of what it is.

Typical designs and their types

Several types of doors are used, which differ from each other in appearance, but the principle of operation of their mechanism is almost the same.

The main elements of a sliding door are closing sashes, guide rails and a carriage with rollers. The system operates on the following principle:

  • the movable element is installed on the door leaf;
  • guides are usually attached to the top of the doorway;
  • the rollers move along the rails and pull one (or several) leaves behind them.

In different designs, the number of mechanisms used can range from 2 to 4 or more. It is possible to use several guides and door leaves, which are made of decorative panels and cover the mechanism. In this case, add-ons, platbands or special fittings are used.

Types of sliding doors:

  • compartment;
  • cascade design;
  • harmonic;
  • constructions that open along the radius.

Sliding doors can have 1 to 4 leaves.

Applied mechanisms and fittings for sliding doors

When creating such a structure, it is necessary to select a carriage with rollers depending on the number of leaves, material used for their installation and the type of door. These parameters are different when using, for example, MDF and glass sheet, both in weight and in terms of the load on the rollers. If it is necessary to install a cascade structure, then it is necessary to select rails with 2 grooves for it and attach 2 rollers to each sash. The same applies to the coupe and the accordion. The reliability of the installed door depends to a large extent on the guides and the carriage mechanism. With a large structure weight (material - tempered glass), 2 rails must be used: one at the top, and the other at the bottom of the opening.

Locks, handles and other fittings for a sliding door are hidden in the door leaf. This is done so that the flaps do not interfere with each other during movement and can be hidden in a niche. Locks are vertical latches. If you need to choose the fittings yourself (usually it comes with the door panels), then it is better to consult a specialist.

Sliding door installation options

The installation of such structures in rooms with a small area allows the use of modern design developments. They can also be used for standard sizes apartments, and in country house... There are many options for installing a sliding door. Let's take a look at some of them.

Most often, a double-leaf structure is used to separate 2 residential areas. At the same time, the room looks like a single whole when the doors are moved apart and is divided into two parts when they are closed. At the same time, the entire area of the apartment is divided unevenly, for example, into an office (with closed panels) and a living room.

Another option - the structure is installed between the main residential block and a balcony or loggia (terrace in the house). Usually glass doors are used in this case.

Another use of such devices is to separate storage rooms or utility rooms from the main premises. To do this, you need to use sliding sliding doors.

The most difficult to manufacture are structures that move apart along a radius. Their installation largely depends on the degree of curvature of the door leaf and guide. They are used in rooms with a rounded configuration and in shower cabins.

Due to their inherent disadvantages, sliding doors cannot be used between the living room, bathroom, kitchen and toilet.

An easy way to make sliding doors yourself

If the type of construction that the owner wants to install in the apartment has been determined, then it is necessary to purchase the necessary materials and tools on the construction market. Fittings can be purchased at specialized stores... The easiest way to start is by installing a single-leaf version of such a sliding door - this is the simplest and most commonly used design. At the same time, a person will acquire skills that will help him in the future to independently cope with multi-door systems.

The technological process of work is as follows:

  1. First you need to make the markings for the guide rail. This can be done in two ways. According to the first, the distance from the door to the floor is measured with a tape measure. You must add 1.5-2 cm to the resulting number to take into account the gap between them. You also need to add the roller carriage height and the rails. After that, with a pencil (felt-tip pen), transfer the obtained data to the wall and draw a line between the marks. The second method is similar to the first. The only difference is that a sash is attached to the doorway and marks are made along the upper edge. To these are then added the height of the carriage and rail mechanism.
  2. Before installing the guide, you need to make sure that the markings are accurate along the horizontal plane. This is done using a level. If you skip this operation, then after complete installation sash structures can spontaneously move in any direction.
  3. Along the line drawn on the wall, the rail is installed so that it is under it. You can fix the guide different ways: Directly to the wall with dowels or on metal brackets or nail to a timber bar. The rail must be installed with some clearance from the wall so that the opening sash cannot catch on the opening or platbands. The main thing is that the rails are correctly selected and the way they are installed does not lead to distortion. If they are mounted for a compartment or similar structures, which are made from floor to ceiling height, then the guides must be fixed on both planes.
  4. To prevent the sash from falling down at the first attempt to open it, the rail must be made twice as long as the opening. To this figure, we must also add 40-50 mm for the emergency travel. This leads to overlap big place near the opening, but saves space in the room itself.
  5. After finishing the installation of the rails, they go to the carriage with rollers. A fastening bolt is inserted inside it, and the entire mechanism is introduced into the guide. For this simple single-leaf design, two rollers must be used. When installing a cascade type or an accordion, their number will increase significantly.
  6. On the upper part of the sash, you need to fix the brackets from the carriage. They are installed at a distance of 4 mm from the edges. A different method is used to secure the glass structure. Its fasteners are made in the form of a metal grip, the jaws of which clamp the material, and they are tightened with bolts. Due to the significant mass of this design, two rails must be used, above and below.
  7. Then the sash is put in place. It is lifted and screws are tightened into the brackets that were fixed in advance. This work must be done together with an assistant who will support the canvas. Then the level of the suspension is checked with a level, and if necessary, it is leveled by tightening the screws.
  8. The mechanism is closed with a plank, and the opening and slopes are made out with the help of platbands.
  9. Install the purchased accessories.

A certain difficulty is the installation of a structure with a niche in the wall. In order for the canvas to enter it, it is necessary to make an artificial partition from drywall sheets. If you decide to install the rail on the floor, you need to make a groove in it. To do this, you must use a puncher.

Tools, fixtures and materials for work

  1. Door leaf made of MDF, chipboard, glass, wood, plastic.
  2. Special fittings.
  3. Staples.
  4. Guide rails.
  5. Fasteners for the canvas.
  6. Carriage with rollers.
  7. Platbands, extensions, planks.
  8. Wooden bar.
  9. Metal brackets.
  10. Perforator.
  11. Building level.
  12. Screwdriver and pliers.
  13. Roulette and pencil (felt-tip pen).

Self-assembly and installation of the sliding door is not difficult. The most important thing in performing this work is to strictly follow the above technological chain and fulfill all the recommendations. It is necessary to correctly assess your strength and financial capabilities and select high-quality material for the structure. If necessary, then consult a specialist who performs such work.

Strength of character lies not in the ability to break through walls, but in the ability to find doors. Better yet, not only be able to find them, but also be able to create these doors. This article will focus on how to realize your strength in everyday life and how to make a door with your own hands.

How to prepare

It would seem that the modern market is so wide that you can find a door of any shape, size and quality on it. But this is not always the case. Especially when it comes to an exclusive, a special kind of wood, a spectacular stained glass window, an outstanding form. Buying a standard factory design is boring and mediocre. And making a door with your own hands is a very easy task, especially if you have a suitable canvas, a couple of skillful hands and a little time.

However, in order to make a beautiful and high-quality door yourself, you need to first study the subtleties and nuances of the material, evaluate the complexity of technology and calculations, and identify pitfalls during its installation.

First you need to prepare all the materials and tools that you will need for work. Indeed, the final result is influenced not only by the quality of the raw materials themselves, but also by the quality and reliability of the auxiliary tools and materials that were used in the assembly and installation of the door. And this will require:

  • manual milling machine. With its help, the processing of a wooden product is carried out, it is shaped, the groove elements are grinded;
  • hand-held circular saw;
  • Bulgarian. In this case, it will serve for sanding wood;
  • screwdriver for door mounting;
  • building level and tape measure;
  • a hammer;
  • pencil or marker.

Regardless of what type of product needs to be made, whether it be interior, entrance or doors for a summer cottage, a single technology is used for all. Therefore, after studying this article, you can easily make homemade doors for any needs. In addition to tools, you will also need the material itself. As a rule, they choose an array of different types of wood: oak, ash, birch, larch, pine.

Some people prefer exotic species: mahogany, wenge, beech. The choice depends on personal preference, the type of room and the overall concept of the interior.

When making a structure with your own hands, you need to take into account the fact that a wooden canvas will require preprocessing, especially for hardwoods. When choosing a wooden canvas, you need to focus on ensuring that the wood is even, smooth. There should be no cracks or knot holes. The selected board is first dried in a well-ventilated room at a temperature of about 25 ° C.

You can dry it outside, but only in dry weather, preferably in the summer of central Russia. Depending on the type of wood and its initial state, it can take up to ten days to dry the web.

Popular models

Before proceeding to the manufacture of doors, you need to think about what type they will be (hinged or sliding), decide on the shape and design. The most important characteristics of all doors are functionality and appearance, because they will become an integral part of the interior.

Let's characterize the main models:

  • Very popular today sliding doors. The door of the "coupe" type can be either single-leaf or with two leaves. Sliding doors on rollers - an alternative to conventional versions with swing doors, especially if there is an acute issue in saving space. There are two types of sliding doors: bottom rails and top rails. So, using a mechanical system with lower guides, the door "walks" along the built-in rollers, reducing the load on the walls.

It is advantageous to use such a sliding door fastening system for thin partitions in apartments.

  • Among compartment doors designs with a hinged mechanism are especially popular. Hinged sliding doors are usually made of glass, due to its lower weight compared to solid wooden counterparts. In addition to the fact that this type of door also takes up little space in the apartment, plus it is also that its glass surface perfectly transmits light into the room. This option is very appropriate if you plan to overhaul"Khrushchevs" in order to free the already small area of the apartment from unnecessary structures.

  • Book-door, like a compartment door, helps to maintain useful space in the apartment. Its folding structure consists of two separate canvases, interconnected so that when opened, one part falls on the other, the same one, without cluttering the interior. They are often used in dressing rooms and bathrooms in bedrooms.

  • Folding door- another option for small apartments... Compared to swing doors, such doors can save up to two meters of space. This type of product can be used in any interior. The design of the accordion doors is varied. There are even interesting options with intricate stained glass windows.

  • Everyone knows paneled doors remain popular to this day because of their aesthetic characteristics. The paneled door differs from the usual one by the fact that additional thinner canvases are inserted inside the door frame. Thus, even the most boring door can be made very original using inserts with textured patterns or carvings. The area of use of these doors is not only office premises, but also residential buildings and apartments.

Manufacturing

A standard hinged door consists of several parts:

  • door frame;
  • door leafs;
  • fasteners;
  • castle;
  • frames in the form of platbands.

If the canvas of the product is not a monolithic board from an array, but has several components, it is necessary to clarify what they will be made of and what is their functional purpose. The frame of the structure is the frame. It sets the main dimensions of the product, gives it rigidity and shape. The outer visible part of the canvas is represented by sheathing. In this capacity, not only wooden panels but also plastic profiles or glass stained-glass windows.

If the task is to make the front door, then you need to take care of the insulation, which is placed inside, under the cladding.

This article will provide information on how to independently make a door of the simplest design with a hinged fastening mechanism, without insulation and complex cladding options such as glass decorative elements and carved panels.

Measurements

Seven times measure cut once. This proverb will be more appropriate than ever when self-production doors. Indeed, the final result will depend on how correctly the measurements are made. And you don't need to figure out which parts to measure. All the main parameters have long been known, it is enough just to write them down on a sheet of paper and measure them using an ordinary construction tape.

It is imperative to measure:

  • door width (distance from the left to the right edge of the leaf);
  • door height (distance from the floor to the top point);
  • the width of the doorway;
  • the thickness of the doorway;
  • the slope of the opening (if there are distortions);
  • evenness (determine the elements, the size of which differs from the main one).

When determining the width of the product, it is recommended to measure the distance between the side parts of the opening in the floor area, in the center of the opening and at the upper border of the opening and find the average value. If necessary, if these values differ, the opening can be trimmed.

For an interior door, the width is usually 80-90 cm, for an entrance door - 90-120 cm. The height of the door is determined by the height of the opening and is approximately 200-210 cm. Measurements are taken with the same tape measure from the floor to the top point of the doorway.

It should be borne in mind that if the apartment does not yet have floor covering, then the measured height will not be entirely accurate, therefore for a start it is recommended to finish work with the floor so that all parameters of the future door are taken into account correctly. When determining the height of the door, measurements are also carried out at three points (extreme left, center and extreme right).

The thickness of the doorway is measured similar to the width of the door. You just need to take into account that the width of the box will be slightly larger, since it is necessary to leave a distance between the door and the box for free movement of the door. And yet, when forming the box, it should be remembered that its width should be several centimeters less than the measured width of the opening, since it is necessary to leave technological voids during installation.

The thickness of the doorway is measured at six points (thickness at the bottom, middle, top for the left edge and the same positions for the right edge). This parameter will depend on the thickness of the wall into which the door will be mounted. For the entrance, it is usually more than for the interior, but there are exceptions. Here you should also pay attention to the presence of non-standard dimensions of the thickness of the opening. In this case, it is necessary to provide for additions that will compensate for this moment.

In order to simplify the installation of the structure, it is necessary to first determine the evenness of the opening... Using the building level, check the vertical of the opening (at three points) and the diagonal. Using a tape measure, measure the distance inside the opening diagonally, from the top corner to the bottom, for each side. Both values should be approximately equal. In the case of strong deviations, not only the appearance of the structure will deteriorate, but also the reliability of the fastening system is called into question.

After the basic parameters have been measured, proceed to the correction of irregularities and distortions. To do this, they carry out plastering of these places or cut off the excess with the help of a grinder. The ideal option would be to level the opening with drywall sheets.

Elimination of the shortcomings identified in the process of measuring the dimensions of the product will certainly have a positive effect on further work and will eliminate many unpleasant moments during installation.

Materials (edit)

The modern market is oversaturated different options doors from a variety of materials. However, the tree remains traditional. Due to its high quality indicators, as well as the property of being perfectly combined with wooden furniture and parquet board, wooden doors have become more in demand, especially in the interiors of apartments and country houses.

In addition to its aesthetic characteristics, wooden crafts have a number of other advantages: the strength of the material, the ease of processing the material, the ability to retain heat, good sound insulation, as well as environmental friendliness.

It is worth paying attention to the fact that if the choice fell on a wooden door, then all other parts should also be made of wood (box, platbands, extensions).

Among the shortcomings of wood, one can note the flammability, the ability to absorb moisture and expand, and, of course, the high cost.

The most popular, but not the easiest to manufacture, are paneled doors. It is better to use ready-made cutters as internal inserts, since cutting them yourself is laborious work. On the construction market, you can purchase a set of cutters for a future door. To save on material, the door leaf can be made of boards, instead of a wide monolithic leaf.

If you need to make a door to a summer cottage or a bathhouse, you can use even cheaper materials. A good alternative to solid wood would be a plywood door. This is a fairly strong material; during its manufacture, the peeled veneer sheets are glued to each other so that the fibers of one sheet are perpendicular to the fibers of the other. The outer layers of plywood are pasted over with aspen, pine or larch veneer (these types of veneer have good strength and aesthetic appearance).

Lining products are also an inexpensive option. The advantage of this material is that in order to make a door, it is not necessary to use a factory lining, you can make separate profiles from scrap materials.

except natural materials, synthetic polycarbonates are widely used. The choice of this material for the manufacture of a door is advantageous when it is assumed that the structure will be influenced by unfavorable weather conditions (humidity, temperature). But if earlier polycarbonate was used for the manufacture of greenhouses, now it is easily used for entrance doors, the main thing is to provide a solid foundation and insulation.

If desired, you can build a structure from other polymers. An aluminum frame with plexiglass inserts is often made. Looks pretty stylish, but these materials are quite expensive.

How to make a door frame?

Before you start assembling the door frame, you need to study its structure. So, the door frame consists of four main parts: two pillars (the longest parts), a threshold and an upper crossbar (short parts). To begin with, measure the length of the racks. In the case of using a threshold, it is equal to the length of the door plus 2-3 centimeters for the gap on each side. If there is no threshold, then instead of a gap from the bottom, add 15-20 centimeters. This will allow the door to move freely from the floor.

The measured values are traced on the canvas and each rack is cut out with a special knife.

The crossbar and the threshold are the same components. Their length consists of the width of the door, the same two gaps and the thickness of the frame. The measured dimensions are transferred to a wooden canvas and one or two elements are cut out, depending on the need for a threshold. In the upper crosspiece of the box, grooves are cut out, marking the lines where the posts intersect with the upper crossbar, and carefully cut these sections with a jigsaw on each side.

After all the grooves have been cut, the uprights and crossbar are aligned on the floor to make sure they match. After that, the cut out parts are carefully sanded with sandpaper, eliminating all irregularities and rough roughness. When all the elements of the box are ready, you can start assembling.

In order to assemble the structure, you will need a drill or screwdriver. A 2-3 mm drill is inserted into the screwdriver and holes are drilled in the aligned corners of the future box. These holes will keep the material intact when screwing in the screws. Screw the screws into each hole with a Phillips drill. The door frame is almost complete.

To make sure that the box is made correctly, you need to place it on the floor and put the selected door leaf inside, assessing the presence of gaps between them. It is worth noting that if the task is to independently make a sliding structure, then you need to take into account its distinctive mechanism. When opened, such a door will move to the side, like a pencil case (enter the wall or lie on it), therefore, when forming the box, a groove for the door should be provided in one of the racks.

How to make the door itself: step by step instructions

Now let's look at how to make the door itself. For outbuildings, the door will be a simple shield made of separate boards, fastened together with wooden straps. Interior wooden doors should have a more aesthetic appearance; simple fittings are not applicable here.

Work should be carried out on a joinery stand or on a table that will allow the product to be fully positioned on it.

To form the door leaf, grooved boards with grooves are used (you can also cut the grooves yourself). The thickness of the boards should be from 2.5 to 4 centimeters, depending on whether it will be interior or Entrance door... Prepared boards are folded into a shield. If grooved boards are taken, then the grooves are removed on the outer boards using a circular saw.

The boards are glued together with carpentry glue, while the pattern of the annual rings must be observed (they must lie in the same direction so that an imbalance does not stand out on the finished product). The blank of the door is placed in a vice in order to combine the elements more tightly, and the glue is allowed to dry. After that, the entire surface of the web is passed with a milling machine, special attention is paid to joints and uneven fragments.

If the thickness of the boards is not sufficient to use the door as an entrance, then you can glue the boards in two layers. Such a door will be quite massive and heavy.

Next, proceed to the design of the finished shield. Using a stencil, transfer the drawing onto a wooden canvas, first with a pencil. Using a router with a manual mechanism, they carefully cut out the pattern, changing the cutters. The finished drawing and the canvas itself should be treated with sandpaper, then blotted with a special antiseptic solution. If the door is entrance, then it must be treated with moisture-resistant agents and flame retardants. So it will last much longer.

How to insert?

The places where the hinges will be located are marked on the door frame. Marks are also made on the door leaf in the appropriate places. To do this, put it in a vertical position, the top will be on the side where the hinges are attached. On the reverse side, mark the location of the castle. Previously, the door is placed in a box, the marking is checked, the location of the lock tongue on the box is marked, then the hinges are inserted, then they are applied to the door and to the box, drilled with a drill. The tongue is carefully cut with a jigsaw.

In order to correctly install the door lock, it is first applied to the installation site on the product, circled, and all the necessary technological holes are marked with dots. After the depth of installation of the lock has been determined, it is placed in the marked place and screwed on. Now that all the parts are ready, you need to install them correctly.

First, we insert the door frame into the opening. We align and secure it with wedges. You can adjust the box already mounted in the wall by hitting the wedges with a hammer. Then dowels and self-tapping screws are inserted into the holes drilled in the wall and box. And the last and most important thing is the assembly of the door and the frame.

It is better to perform this operation together to avoid injury, since the door leaf is a heavy structure. Holding the door in weight, we fix the hinges with self-tapping screws.

After the assembly of the main parts is completed, you can do the platbands. It is easier to buy ready-made in the store or to make it yourself using wooden blanks 1-1.5 cm thick and simple jigsaw... Each edge of the casing is cut at a 45 degree angle and adjusted to length. Finished products are fixed at the level of the box using wood glue or small nails.

In general, the work on installing the door, with a competent approach and high-quality materials, will take no more than two days. And the above recommendations can be used to make doors from other materials, changing only some of the tools.

Finishing

Giving the finished product a finished look will help finishing... You can also do it yourself, it is more pleasant and less complicated work than installing and assembling the door itself. Door finishing can be done as follows:

  • door painting;
  • varnishing;
  • wallpapering or decorative film;
  • decoupage;
  • insert of mirrors and colored glasses;
  • lining with fabric;
  • the use of methods of aging a wooden canvas.
